2 Dear Friends , The year is turning all too quickly and we are once again looking forward to falling leaves , cosy fires , and hunkering down for the winter months . Kathy and I had a marvellous experience recently at Ysgol Bro Famau when we turned up to take an ‘Open the Book ’ assembly . It turned out tha t the school was holding their Harvest service and we were treated to their marvellous sin ging and thought provoking presentation on Unicef ’s convention on the rights of every child . A s an added bonus , we were able to present the story of Peter walking on the water to the whole sc hool after that service! At the recent Diocesan Conference , the theme was ‘O ne Shared Hope ’. Young people were involved in sharing their hopes for the future . One young girl told about the inspirational leaders who had helped her to grow her faith during the rec ent diocesan trip to Finland . Our Youth chaplain talked about the tremendous hope she gains from the faith and spirituality she experiences from the young people she encounters in her work in the diocese .

Everyone who is privileged to work with young people gains far more in inspiration, enthusiasm and a joie de vivre than they give themselves . My h ope is that the work that we do in Croeso Pawb , Messy Church , Open the Book , school assemblie s and all the children ’s services we are all involved with will sow seeds which will bear fruits of God ’ s love and blessing, now and into the future .

I have also been filled with hope by the meetings we have had so far with the lovely people training to be pastoral assistants . I for one gaine d so much from their stories of faith and spirituality , and I am looking forward to sharing a nd learning with the people training to be Worship leaders .

So as I look with apprehension on the thirty five pumpkins still to be hollowed out and prepared for the Messy Churches in Bro Famau and St James , I pray that the transforming power of God the Father , Son and Holy Spirit will continue to gi ve us all hope and inspiration through the winter still to come .

Yours in Christ, Wendy 3

Wellfield Farm now houses four otherwise homeless men and the project is running successfully. But it needs some funding to keep it going. A tea party will be held at Brooklands House, Ffordd y Bont, Pontybodkin on Sunday 29th September between 2.30pm and 4.30 pm to contribute to it. October’s Messy Church had the theme of Harvest when we looked at God’s

many blessings and gifts for us.

We were delighted to be joined by George, who is training to be a vicar in Mold. George got us

making screen prints. We learned how to make our own designs which we printed onto cotton bags to

take home. They were fabulous!

George will be staying with us until Easter and we look forward to more Messy fun with him. We also made hedgehog bread rolls which we ate with our meal, and we made a ‘ Thanksgiving ’ tree using our handprints which will go to decorate our church . We will also be making a ‘ Jesse ’ tree over the next few months in which we cover the branches with our prayers to God for the world. We also made lanterns with autumn leaves and jam jars . And of course we had pumpkins . We carved smiley fac es out of the pumpkins (under close adult supervision) and ate pumpkin cake. Any other suggestions for what to do with the piles of pumpkin flesh in my kitchen will be gratefully received! Thank you to everyone who worked so hard before and during Messy Church . Our next Messy Church will be on 17th November when we will look at some of the stories of the saints. All are welcome at 4 pm at Churc h Hall.

St Francis of Assisi

St Francis was christened Giovanni after he was born in Assisi in Italy in 1182, but his father, a wealthy merchant, was away on a business trip to France. When he came back he called his son Francesco, meaning 'the little Frenchman' and the name stuck. After a wild young life, and being imprisoned for a year after being captured as a soldier, he realised that he was called to live a life of being poor and attending to to the needs of people like lepers as Jesus had.

One of his big concerns was for animals and birds and the natural world. When he was travelling with his companions one day they found they were surrounded in the trees by lots of birds. He told his friends to go on a bit, and stopped to preach to these feathered friends. This is what he said to them:

My little sisters, the birds, you are grateful to God, your Creator and in every place you should praise him, for he has given you the freedom to fly about everywhere and has also given you many feathers: also he saved you in Noah's Ark so you are still here; more than this, you must be thankful that he has given you the air to fly in; beyond this he feeds you and lets you drink out of streams, lets you live in mountains and valleys and nest in high trees. God looks after you and your children and loves you very much. My little sisters, be grateful to him and praise God always.

Francis was fond of other animals and he was the first to have a crib service at Christmas. He had a crib with straw in it as the altar, and a real ox and donkey near it so it was like the stable Jesus was born in at Bethlehem. He preached the importance of the natural world and called the big lights in the sky Brother Sun and Sister Moon so that we know they are our friends.

The drawing of him and his dear animals on p7 are for you to colour.

Most of the accounts in 10 the book of Acts are reported in the third party , but sometimes in the first, when it is he was with Paul. In his letters Paul refers to Luke being with him, and particularly during the period of house- arrest in Rome, when he was the only companion, apart from the Roman soldier who was Paul’s constant guard.

There is no record of what Luke did after Paul’s execution in Rome in AD 66 but second century sources say that he carried on as an apostle until he was 84 and was hanged from an olive tree in Boeotia, near Thebes in central Greece. This would have been about the end of the first century . His remains were held in a tomb in Thebes until AD 357 when they were translated to Constantinople. Relics of the saints were highly prized and traded in mediaeval times; parts of his body were separated and are found today in Prague ( the head ) the body ( Padua ) and a rib ( Luke’s tomb in Thebes.) Carbon dating and other tests have shown them to be a man of Syrian descent from the right time- period.

O Glorious St Andrew, you were the first to recognise and follow the Son of God.

With your friend St John you remained with Jesus for the rest of your life, and now through eternity.

Just as you led your brother St Peter to Christ, and many others after him, draw us also to him.

Teach us how to lead them, out of love for Jesus and dedication to his service.

Help us to learn the lesson of the Cross and carry our daily crosses without complaint, so that they may carry us to God the Father Almighty.

AMEN

The Coffee Morning in the Daniel Owen Centre raised £124.00 which was an excellent result as it was a quiet morning. Our next Coffee Morning in the Daniel Owen Centre will be in April next year.

The Remembrance Day Sunday Service will start at 10.50am on the 10th of November. There will be no 8am Service on this Sunday.

We will be holding our Christmas Tree Festival again this year & we will be contacting the various groups who are active in the Village shortly to see if they wish to participate again this year.
