PASTORAL CORNER JULY 5, 2020

My Dear Brothers and Sisters, I am back to share my experiences away from my motherland. In 2012 I was requested to meet the Bishop of Portland for weeks. So, I happened to land in Portland and stayed for two weeks in the Diocese. At that me I was not aware that I will connue my services in this foreign land. The bishop was greatly impressed and requested me to render my services beginning April 22nd 2013. As a priest my first term of service was in Waterville. Later I connued my health ministry in Lewiston, and as of now, I am serving the Lord in these Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes. When I reached here for the first me I was in a stac state since there is great diversity in culture, tradion, people, and climate. I made up my mind: I am in God’s will and it’s God’s command I have to obey. I sll do remember when I reached here it was the start of the warm summer. For the first me I saw the changing colors of the leaves. My first winter gave me mixed feelings as for the first me I saw the snowflakes which surprised me, but at the same me I was unable to withstand the terrible cold. I experienced very contradic- tory climate. Sll, I enjoyed my long drives. Finally, the pleasure is all mine. Gradually I got adjusted to this new climate and got accustomed to the people around me. Coming to the people in my inial days I cannot forget their warm welcome, accepng me as their own family member, providing all the necessies. Really, I was moved, touched, and carried away by their love, care, and concern which helped me mingle very quickly. Not only the people but the Diocesan support was marvelous. They guided me unl I got accustomed to this new scenario. Their support is quite commendable. Without the support of the Diocese it would be highly impossible for me to connue my journey. Even though I was far away from my motherland, the warm welcome, the care and concern shown towards me, and the love that is showered upon me has given me a lot of energy. The people of this state have an es- pecially high regard towards priests. It gives me moral and spiritual support which help me to connue my journey. I thank each and every beauful soul in my wonderful journey who has given me a smooth road in serving the Lord. May God bless you all, Stay safe, Stay healthy. Amen. RFather Dominic Savio, HGN

FAITH FORMATION

Children’s Weekly Gospel Reflection: When we carry something heavy on our shoulders, we refer to it as a burden. Some burdens are heavier than others. Not all burdens are physical things, however. What are some examples of the kinds of burdens in life that people carry? In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus tells us how we can lighten our burden. We can always go to Jesus for help. When we follow him, our burden is lighter than if we do not. One of the ways that we find rest in Jesus is through prayer. In prayer, we share our burdens with Jesus. Let’s take some time now to share our burdens with the Lord and to find rest.

Q & A: Kissing the Altar at Mass Question: Why do priests kiss the altar at the start of Mass? Answer: Our churches and chapels are filled with sym- bols. We might think of the more common symbols (like the crucifix, statues, stainedglass windows, vestment color and altar cloths) as well as major symbols (such as the paschal candle and the baptismal font). But there are some things that we can take for granted in our sacred spaces, because unfortunately, they seem to just be part of the building, including three of the main symbols of our liturgy: the ambo (lectern), the chair for the priest celebrant, and the altar. These three objects are placed in a specially designated area called the sanctuary. They are the places where the Word of God is proclaimed, where the priest prays and presides at the celebration, and where the bread and wine are offered by the priest during the Eucharistic Prayer. Although each of these objects is sacred because of the role they play in our worship, the altar holds a special place. In a document containing the rules and instruc- tions for the Mass N the “General Instruction of the Ro- man Missal” N we read: “The altar on which the Sacri- fice of the Cross is made present under sacramental signs is also the table of the Lord to which the People of God is called together to participate in the Mass, as well as the center of the thanksgiving that is accomplished throughout the Eucharist” (no. 296). The Diocese of Portland proudly presents… One of the ways that we recognize the importance of the A Virtual Maine Catholic Youth altar is when the priest and deacon kiss the altar at the Convention beginning of Mass. Kissing is an ancient act of devotion. Remember, we also kiss the cross on Good Friday, and The annual Youth Convention, originally scheduled for April, will now be a livestreamed event on the deacon or priest kisses the “Book of the Gospels” Sunday, July 26, from 10 a.m. to noon! after the Gospel is proclaimed. This act of devotion re- minds us that the altar is a symbol of Jesus, the “living Portland Peninsula and Island Parishes Youth stone” (see 1 Peter 2:4), the foundation stone of our faith. Ministry is planning on watching together (safely) at It is a symbol gesture, but it is a powerful reminder of the the teen meeting space at St. Louis Church One on whom our faith is built and in whose name we RSVP to our Youth Minister Erica Papkee: gather as the “household of faith” (see Galatians 6:10). FAITH IN ACTION

This Weekend’s Second Collecon for Hai Project For more than 18 years now, Sacred Heart St. Dominic Parish has twinned with a Hai parish, since 2005, with Christ Roi Parish in Morne Rouge near the city of Cap Haien, funding a grade school for parish children. The building of classrooms has taken classes out of the church proper. The second collecon this weekend is to provide a bowl of rice and beans daily for the 300 students, the cost of which has risen sharply. Other funds raised pay the eight teachers' salaries, as well as the principal's and the catechistRsacristan's, some funds for generator fuel and the pastor's needs. Please be as generous as you are able. Mesi ampil! (Thank you very much). Sponsored by the Social Jusce and Peace Commission of Sacred Heart St. Dominic Parish.

Prayer Against Coronavirus Lord Jesus Christ, our Divine Physician, we ask you to guard and protect us from Coronavirus COVIDR19 and all serious illness. For all who have died from it, have mercy; for those who are ill now, bring healing. For those searching for a remedy, enlighten them; for medical caregivers helping the sick, strengthen and shield them. For those working to con- tain the spread, grant them success; for those afraid, grant peace. May your precious blood be our defense and salva- on. By your grace, may you turn the evil of disease into moments of consolaon and hope. May we always fear the contagion of sin more than any illness. We abandon ourselves to your infinite mercy. Amen. STEWARDSHIP

Operational Note This weekend marks the re-opening of our Parishes’ Churches. It is wonderful to have them all open again. I do want to stress that as of right now the State Mandated Cap of fifty (50) people TOTAL in the church remains in place. If we find that each week we are consistently reaching capacity and have sufficient Lay Ministers to assist our Priests, as well as sufficient time in between Masses to clean and disinfect the churches, we will work to add additional Masses, as ap- propriate.

We ask for your ongoing assistance in making Masses safe for you our Parishioners and our Priests. The things you can DO to help are:

Please arrive at church on time as we will need to close the doors when we reach the capacity of 50 people in the church and/or no later than five (5) minutes after the Mass has begun. Please continue to wear masks to and during Mass. Please continue to observe the physical distancing of 6 feet apart when sitting in the pews. Use the hand sanitizer provided when entering the church and before receiving communion. Most importantly, if you are feeling unwell, please stay home and join us online Saturdays at 4pm or Sundays at 10am at: https://portlandcatholic.org/online-mass, the dispensation from the Bishop remains in place during these unsettling times.

We also understand that fellowship and gathering together after Mass is desirable. However, for this next phase of reopening our Parishes, the halls still remain closed. We appreciate your patience as the Pastoral Staff and Priests navi- gate the guidelines for each portion of the re-opening process.

Because of the early submission deadline for the bulletin, the offertory for the June 27th/28th weekend will be in the July 12th Bulletin. As always, I thank everyone who is able to give! Even as we resume Masses in our various Parishes, giving on-line is a wonderful option to consider or continue to use.. You can still mail your contributions into the Pas- toral Center at 307 Congress St. Portland, ME 04101. Peace, Stephanie Moore, Business Coordinator

HOW CAN I ATTEND SUNDAY MASS?

Mass attendance will be on a First-Come, First-Served basis. This means you need to arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the start of Mass. This will allow enough time for the usher at the door to take your name, phones number and the total number of people in your party. Once we have reached the Total Capacity of 50 people, including all of the ministers and the priest, the doors will be closed. Doors will close five (5) minutes after Mass has started, even if the total capacity is below 50. There is NO advanced registration or reserved seating available.

The Mass Schedule is as follows: Saturday 4:00 pm at the Cathedral (Live Streamed at https://portlandcatholic.org/online-mass) Saturday 5:15 pm at St. Peter Sunday 9:00 am at St. Peter Sunday 10:00 am at the Cathedral (Live Streamed at https://portlandcatholic.org/online-mass) Sunday 10:00 am at St. Christopher Sunday 11:30 am at St. Louis (Mass offered in English/Polish) Sunday 12:30 pm at Sacred Heart/St. Dominic (Mass offered in English/French/Spanish)
