En el caso de la serie Downton Abbey a pesar de que se han visto series con la misma temática donde se retratan las clases sociales, Downton Abbey busca describir lo que se vive alrededor de la familia protagonista: los Crawley. La temática de esta serie es conocer una familia donde los secretos y mentiras se van revelando a la audiencia para que esta se relacione con todos los personajes aunque vivan en época o lugar distintos. Downton Abbey busca explicar a la familia como el núcleo más importante para tener poder pero al mismo tiempo sobrellevar los conflictos como una unidad y estar juntos en las buenas y en las malas y ver siempre por el otro. ¿Qué puede revelar Downton Abbey en un análisis de la familia? ¿Y cómo se complementan los Crawley con los sirvientes sin ser una unidad familiar creada por lazos de sangre? Con esta investigación se busca analizar el concepto de familia y demostrar que aunque la serie se desarrolla en la segunda y tercera década del siglo veinte, la familia actual pasa por situaciones similares. Esto se analizará a través de los conflictos familiares de la serie en las temporadas uno a cinco. La serie en el ámbito familiar ayuda a futuras investigaciones sobre las relaciones de familia con la televisión y la sociedad. ¿Por qué esta serie y no otra? porque aquí se ven dos modelos de familia, la familia de sangre, en la cual los Crawley nacieron y donde se pueden desarrollar gracias al dinero heredado; y el otro modelo, la familia que se crea entre los compañeros de trabajo: los sirvientes. 5 Downton Abbey no solo es una serie dramática, sino histórica. Está basada en una familia de la aristocracia inglesa de principios del siglo XX, que lo podemos encontrar en los libros de las herederas del verdadero Downton Abbey, la condesa de Carnarvon, Lady Almina and the real Downton Abbey y Lady Catherine, the Earl, and the real Downton Abbey. La serie televisiva se apega a los detalles históricos reales, como en el primer capítulo donde los Crawley se enteran del hundimiento del Titanic, o al final de la primera temporada donde se retrata el inicio de la Primera Guerra Mundial. También podemos ver los avances de la tecnología, como la instalación de corriente y luz eléctrica en el Castillo o la llegada del refrigerador, el teléfono y la radio. Al retratar la realidad es más creíble entender lo que está sucediendo y crear una relación más estrecha con los personajes. Downton Abbey es una serie que vale la pena analizar por la relación familiar que se presenta. “La familia sigue siendo en México la base de la sociedad. (…) Los hijos poseen un papel primordial; por lo tanto sienten seguridad emocional, aunque son muy dependientes de la familia; también a los padres se les cuida y se les respeta en su ancianidad.” (Ceballos, 2011). Actualmente México es un país donde la familia es el centro de atención en la toma de decisiones, en celebraciones e incluso en la pérdida de algún ser querido, la familia es un soporte para poder seguir adelante. Esto se vivía en el Reino Unido en 1910, y en especial con la familia Crawley se puede observar claramente, al analizar a la familia de sangre y a la servidumbre que se convierte en una familia por el hecho de convivir tanto tiempo, estar bajo el mismo techo y seguir las órdenes de las mismas personas (Mr. Carson y Mrs. Hughes) y los señores de la casa (Robert y Cora Crawley). Se muestra la familia creada con los sirvientes, donde como en cualquier ámbito laboral es necesaria la comunicación y la comprensión. La serie muestra que a pesar de 6 la distancia en la época y el lugar con la realidad de hoy, las relaciones son algo que se puede ver en cualquier ámbito laboral y familiar. En cuanto al ámbito de la producción y narrativa audiovisual se analiza Downton Abbey para observar cómo se expresan los comunicadores a través de las series televisivas sobre la familia. En este caso en la mente de Julian Fellowes y todos los que trabajan para él, y cómo el creador y los escritores pueden incluir sus experiencias o con base en investigaciones sobre la época cómo se desarrolla un conflicto en el ámbito familiar en el tiempo y espacio mostrado en la serie. En este trabajo se describirá qué son los medios de comunicación y el concepto de familia. A través de la teoría de usos y gratificaciones, así como la teoría de expectación-valoración se intentará entender la relación de las audiencias con la serie y por qué se consume este tipo de series televisivas. A continuación se hará un análisis técnico de la serie para describir a cada personaje individualmente. La descripción de los personajes principales como individuos se realizará para analizar el conjunto (la familia) y conocer cada parte del todo para posteriormente conocer las reacciones de cada personaje a los problemas y conflictos familiares. “El hombre en sí mismo es un ser con toda una serie de capacidades y potencialidades, tales como su aspecto físico, el social, el espiritual y el psicológico, que le permiten desarrollarse plenamente con su entorno” (Santana, 2014). Posteriormente se hará un análisis de la serie de forma estructural, formal y antropológica.
