3 From the Editor The big news from my point of view this month is that Pensilva Community Association has been awarded charity status (see pg 10). In the next couple of months we will be doing our utmost to achieve the January 1st start date. There seems to be a lot going on around the parish at the moment. Lots of reports and notices this month have meant that I have had to go to 60 pages in this month’s Pump. First time since November last year! One thing about writing my few words here every month is that it makes me very aware of the passage of time. It doesn’t seem five minutes since I was writing about the glorious Spring weather we had this year. So now we have also had a glorious spell of early Autumn weather, though, as I write this, it seems to be over and Winter seems quite close at hand all of a sudden. Still, look on the bright side, it won’t be five minutes before we’ll be welcoming in the Spring again! All the best - Joe

5 From Cllr Steph McWilliam - &ovember 2015

I cannot believe I am writing a newsletter for the November editions of parish magazines. How on earth has this happened? There are some reports that we are in for a very long, hard winter. If that is the case, please look out for each other and, in particular, check on elderly or vulnerable neighbours. We are nearly ready to finalise the emergency plan but we could do with volunteers who might be able to help rig up emergency heating and lighting if required, who are Raynet users and one or two volunteers to help in an emergency around Gang and Bicton. If you can, please contact Jane on 01579 362960. If you have any time to spare, do please consider volunteering. There are many ways you can do this. Some are indoors, some driving, some outdoors, some involve working with people and some don’t. As budget pressures mount, it is going to be harder to maintain all services to the same level. This doesn’t have to be all bad. If it means we take back some local community working, there may be many benefits. In particular, can I make a plea to our young people? It can really help you in applying for your first jobs to have some sort of volunteering to put on your CV and to have people prepared to provide you with really good references, which all helps improve your chances in life. It also feels pretty good to have done something worthwhile with your free time. Just search ‘Volunteer Cornwall’ and do let me know if you decide to give it a go. I’d love to mention you next month. I mentioned last month that councillors don’t seem to have a role in planning enforcement cases. It seems the terminology may change from ‘enforcement’ to ‘compliance’, which isn’t exactly the outcome I was aiming for but it is a start. With the introduction of the Bodmin Moor Commons Council next year, there may be an opportunity to look again at a 40mph speed limit to protect the animals. Please let me know how you feel about this. You have probably heard in the news lately about the pressure on policing and probable closure of more police stations. We are very fortunate to live in a low crime area but please help the police by reporting any suspicious activity, especially if you can give reg. numbers of unfamiliar vehicles in unexpected places. Just ring 101. (Yes I know – but the response time is getting much better.) Finally, the Minions sign has certainly been a talking point. Unfortunately there has been a misunderstanding about it. It doesn’t belong to Cornwall Council or to a parish council - either Linkinhorne or St Cleer. The decision to remove it was Universal’s who own the copyright. However much we may wish to see it back up, it isn’t going to happen unless Universal agree and so far they haven’t, despite our best efforts. We do know how popular it was and how much extra business it brought to the local businesses but we don’t own it and we can’t put it back. We aren’t all6 miserable grumps and I would love to be able to take my grandchildren up to see it but there is nothing more any of us councillors can do. Sorry! The Latest from Your Parish Councillor - Martin Corney I want to tell you about the Caradon Community Network Area Panel this month. When Cornwall Council became a unitary authority the old Caradon District Council was abolished, but this left a big gap between the parish and town councils and the new unitary authority. This gap has been filled by community network areas; each has a panel which is the main way Cornwall Council communicates with local communities. These panels meet every two months and consist of the local Cornwall Councillors and representatives from the Town and Parish Councils. Three community network areas have been set up covering the old Caradon District Council area; Liskeard & Looe, Cornwall Gateway (Saltash & Torpoint), and us in Caradon Community Network Area. I attend these meetings to represent and report back to our Parish Council. These panels have no powers or budgets, but do provide an opportunity to question Cornwall Council officers, Devon & Cornwall emergency services; fire, police and ambulance or any other local service providers. Recently we have heard from the Devon & Cornwall Police Commisioner. He explained months ago that with the cuts imposed by government, there would have to be cuts in policing services. This has now been detailed as the closure of 30 police stations, including local stations; Callington and Liskeard, both of which have been running down for years. With this reduction of policing, the emergency and non-emergency phone services have become even more important. We know that there have been problems with the 101 non-emergency phone service. I heard that some times you had to wait up to 45 minutes for a response, but the service is supposed to have been improved recently. We are trying to get the police service to demonstrate this, with meaningful statistics. Don’t forget the parish website st-ive-parishcouncil.gov.uk with council meeting agendas and minutes; also downloadable copies of the Parish Pump. For those of you who do Facebook, our St Ive Parish Council page is still being updated with parish news. Phone me, email me on [email protected] or "martin corney blog st ive" in search engines will find my blogs for you to comment on this article and other gems.

CAN YOU OFFER A HELPING HAND? We are looking for more volunteers to assist at the Pensilva Memory Cafe . You will meet and greet attenders helping to create a welcoming atmosphere. You will also help to serve tea and cake and support our users during the sessions. If you feel that you could offer 2 hours once a month please contact Carolyn or Jenny on 01579 362698/363458. 7 The Memory Cafe is held on the 4th Thursday every month at St. John's church, Pensilva. ST. IVE VILLAGE SHOW REPORT

Congratulations. Once again St. Ive has put on a busy show in the Village Hall, with all the categories being entered. After a very wet summer it seemed everyone had made an extra effort to enter fruit, vegetables and flowers, so the tables would not be bare. From cakes to craft and photos to children's entries the whole show had a friendly village feel, with the extra bonus of seeing new faces. Our village resident Keith Mutton opened the show, also giving out the prizes which included his own two special choices. One was to Jack Bellringer for “A PIECE OF SCHOOL WORK”, and the other to Brigitte Mann for “A DISPLAY OF VEGETABLES”. The auction at the end of the day was a great success with donated fruit, vegetables, jams, cakes and flowers being sold off. It was worth everyone's hard work. The following are the categories for next year in the ADULT PHOTOGRAPHY and ADULT HANDICRAFTS just so you can be prepared: Photography ... Animal in action, Fun and games, Nature in motion, Close-up in any subject, a Landmark. Handicrafts E Handmade greeting cards, Item made of wool, Item of Patchwork, Quilting and Appliqué, Something New from Something Old, Embroidered Item, Gift for a friend or a child, Knitted item for a child, Item of Tapestry/Cross-stitch.

£2.50 Entry Including Food and Drink 8 Pensilva W.I October Report. Frances Tucker president, welcomed members, family and friends to our annual harvest supper. After a few short notices it was down to business and diets flew out the window when faced with the lovely supper with so many lovely things to try and to enjoy. When all had eaten to their fill it was time for the auction of produce so generously supplied by all, to begin. Evelyn Dwelly agreed to be auctioneer for the evening and did an excellent job. Bidding was brisk with everyone trying to outbid the other. It seemed that in no time at all, the table that was groaning with produce of every kind was empty and carrier bags where full. 20 Christmas Tree Festival St Ive Church is planning to stage a Christmas Tree Festival from Wed 9 th December to Sunday 13 th December, and local organisations are invited to provide and decorate a fresh or artificial tree. The intention is to make this a community event, with any profits from donations divided between the church and local charities. All you need to do is to make a contribution, (we suggest a minimum of £10) then come along and have fun decorating your tree. We hope that the trees will celebrate each individual group in their own way and that it will be a great way to promote your groups activities to the festival visitors. There will be access to a power point for lighting if you wish. Your tree must be no larger than 5 feet tall. The Church will be open for decoration on Wednesday 9 th between 10am and 4pm and again from 6pm to 8pm. The trees will be available for visitors from Thursday 10 th to Sunday 13 th between 10am and 7pm. Two Christmas events take place during the Festival: the first is a Carol service on Thursday 10 th at 11am, and also Christmas lunch on Sunday 13 th . Decorations must be removed on Monday 14 th December. Contact Lorraine Dakin, Glen Silva, Golberdon Rd, Pensilva, PL14 5RL. Tel: 01579 363128 Mobile: 07791 772546

This year is no exception. We will again be organising a prize draw with lots of amazing prizes, as well as selling our ABW Christmas cards. Alan Moss (ABW member and committee member) will be running a half marathon in November to raise money for ABW (sponsorship forms in the gym and on Millennium House reception); please support if you can. We will be at Tesco’s in Callington again over the Christmas period, raising the profile of ABW as well as supporting the Tesco national charities and hopefully raising a few bob for ABW also. This year has certainly been a struggle for us financially but we very much hope that your generosity will see us over the hump. In October the challenge was to walk the length of Cornish coast path on the treadmills and cross-trainers in the gym. Between us we made it from Tintagel all the way round to Fowey. The November challenge is the ever- popular Iron Man, which never fails to generate a bit of a buzz. Congratulations to our wonderful manager Mel who continues to extend her impressive list of qualifications; she has now successfully completed a course on Obesity and Diabetes run by the Wright Foundation. Keep well!
