05 | SPJFC Year Book 2018 CELEBRATING OUR LIFE MEMBERS Our history and heritage are a vital part of SPJFC. Our great Club was formed in 1926 and we’ve had many great sportspeople and sporting administrators contribute to the Club over the years. Today, we have 53 life members and were pleased to be able to celebrate them at the SPJFC Inaugural Life Members event on Sunday 27 May. It was an overwhelming success!

Many stories were told throughout the day and it was a wonderful opportunity for our life members to see the memorabilia displayed in our new clubrooms in the John McGrath Pavilion at Ernest Johnson Oval. The highlight of the day was the life members forming a guard of honour for our Year 10 team and Paddy Dalton tossing the coin. The food was great, the fellowship was outstanding, and it was a hoot having the Year 10 players join us post-match. Darryl Sinclair – Life Member & Coaching Coordinator SPOTLIGHT ON PAT ‘PADDY’ DALTON Pat Dalton, or Paddy as we like to call him, was the youngest of the “Dalton Gang” who started their playing careers right here at South Perth in the early 1950s. Paddy went on to have an exceptional footy career, playing 217 games over 12 seasons for the Perth Demons, and playing for WA. He was a key member of Perth’s 1966, 1967, and 1968 premiership teams, earned the club’s fairest and best award on two occasions, and was named as part of their ‘Team of the Century’. After an outstanding season in 1970, his second-last league season, Paddy won the Sandover Medal as the fairest and best player in the WAFL competition. Paddy was inducted into Perth Football Club’s Inaugural Hall of Fame in 2015 along with South Perth alumni, and club Patron Allan Stiles.

On Saturday 16 June members of the mighty Stingrays turned out to watch the mighty Perth Demons take on East Fremantle. At half time our boys and girls, banners in hand, dressed in green and gold, chanted “The mighty, mighty stingrays” loudly as they marched around the oval. At each quarter a kick on the oval followed by plenty of fairy floss, ice cream and bouncy castles. A fun day had by all, don’t miss it next year!

17 | SPJFC Year Book 2018 YEAR 2 GALA DAY July 29 saw two SPJFC Year 2 teams playing their District Gala Day at the historical WACA ground. Perfect weather gave both our teams, SPJFC Green & SPJFC Black, a great day of football. We started with a grand entry and South Perth being announced over the PA as they ran onto the ground, the teams chanted and the parents roared. Each team played three games against clubs such as Queens Park, Coolbinia, Belmont, Thornlie and High Wycombe and we witnessed some skilful football from all players. Mixing the usual South Perth teams up meant new faces to our boys, but they adapted and bonded quickly and soon became a united team. The first game the boys showed a few nerves, the ball went up and away they went, coming together like a true football team. After the gala day the teams enjoyed some group training from the district coaches, covering Mods grade tackling and it was clear to see Year 2 is ready to go for next year. A big thank you to the coaches, the official helpers and all the mums and dads turning out to cheer the teams on. Well done to both SPJFC Year 2 Green & Black.

This enabled the Club to move in to our new home before the 2018 season got underway. Stage Two is now approaching completion. This has involved the demolition of buildings; works on the oval; and construction of new sports facilities such as cricket nets, playgrounds and social areas. Importantly for the Club, the lights to the ovals are being upgraded, which will allow far greater flexibility for fixturing of games and be very much welcomed by coaches and players for training. We also expect that a shelter structure to the oval-facing side of the Pavilion will be installed prior to the start of the 2019 season.
