Des Moines Register I-Cubs Insider: Organization tips its cap to Quade By: Randy Peterson

Those close to former (and now ) Mike Quade knew his opinion of wearing a batting helmet while coaching third base.

"He didn't like it," I-Cubs majority owner Michael Gartner said.

That makes the Mike Quade bobblehead giveaway at Principal Park on June 7 all that more interesting.

In honor of Quade's helmet annoyance, the statue features a smiling Quade proudly holding high a helmet — as if he's acknowledging the crowd for something he did successfully.

The helmet-less (and hatless) Quade also reveals his bald head, which prompted another inside joke by Gartner:

"We tried to get Great Clips to sponsor the bobblehead," Gartner said. "They politely declined."

Polin released: Polin Trinidad was released for the second time in two months, this time to make room on the roster for Todd Wellemeyer, Wednesday's starting pitcher.

Trinidad was released during , but signed again when the Chicago Cubs promoted Casey Coleman.

Roster move: Another roster move will happen next week when pitcher Doug Davis is activated. He's pitching Tuesday at Colorado Springs.

Peoria Journal Star Chiefs proving baseball is one crazy game Umpire breaks an arm; Chiefs walk in run in 14th in 5-4 loss to LumberKings By: KEVIN CAPIE

PEORIA —

The have squeezed a season's worth of oddities into the first three games of the current nine-game homestand.

Friday afternoon's installment, a 5-4 loss to the Clinton LumberKings that featured a 14th inning with one umpire and a position player on the mound for Peoria.

"Baseball is the craziest game ever for those reasons we saw (Friday)," said Anthony Giansanti, who started at third base, played two-thirds of an inning at first and closed the 14th with a . "It's a tough loss but we'll come back."

It didn't have to come down to a loss or even a 14th inning for that matter.

The Chiefs allowed an unearned run in the ninth which tied the game at 4. Peoria then had runners in scoring position and only one out in the ninth and 11th through 13th innings. In the 10th, there was a runner at second with two away.

"We had all the opportunity in the world,' Matt Szczur said. 'I was up with guy at third (in the ninth). We made some mistakes but we're still going to be fighting." The only extra inning Peoria went quietly was the bottom of the 14th, after Clinton took the lead. And, oh, what a top half of an inning it was.

After reliever Bryce Shafer, in the fourth inning of his longest outing of the season, issued a leadoff walk things turned for bizarre.

With the Chiefs at double play depth, designated hitter Mickey Wiswall hit a low line drive that appeared headed to second baseman Pierre LePage to either catch or play off a hop and turn a double play.

But umpire Pat Hoberg could not get out of the way, taking the ball off his arm for a rule-book single and a broken arm. He left the game and plate umpire Gavin Hanson finished the game solo.

Clinton moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice before Shafer walked another batter. The right-hander almost escaped trouble, striking out Marcus Littlewood for the second out.

Shafer took , the LumberKings' No. 9 hitter, to an 0-2 count but the catcher worked a bases-loaded walk to force in the go-ahead run.

Although Yohan Gonzalez was warm in the , Kopitzke turned to Giansanti in an effort to the bullpen for the weekend after already going through three relievers.

"At that point, I didn't think we could bring in Gonzales (for possibly only one batter)," Kopitzke said. "If we were going to bring him in, we would have brought him in at the beginning of the inning, but Shafer was in a position where his pitches were good and he said he was alright."

Giansanti, who only moved to first base at the start of the 14th after LePage pinch-ran for starter Richard Jones, promptly struck out Matt Cerione to end the inning.

"(Kopitzke) knows I'll play wherever he needs me to play," Giansanti said. "He knew that I pitched a little bit in college and needed someone to come in and get an out."
