SHIRE OF BEVERLEY PRESIDENT REPORT ‐ APRIL 2017

Avondale Survey – please provide your feedback Most people in the community would have received a survey in the mail recently seeking feedback and comments on Avondale. This information will assist the National Trust WA and Shire of Beverley to review and prioritise recommendations of the Avondale Masterplan and best focus development of the place. It may also provide information for the volunteer Avondale Farm Project Association to refine their role in support of Avondale. The survey is available online via the National Trust WA website (nationaltrust.org.au/initiatives/avondale-priorities) or via the Shire of Beverley website (beverley.wa.gov.au) and additional copies are at the Shire office and CRC. The survey will continue until after Easter.

Paddock Burning REMINDER - Shire of Beverley Firebreak Order – paddock burns at any time throughout the year (including now in preparation for seeding) are required to have a firebreak 2.2m wide clear of all inflammable material com- pletely surrounding the area to be burnt and an operational fire-fighting unit having a capacity of not less than 650Lt. Please ensure you are aware of the Fire-Break Order and follow its guidelines.

Cr Brown Council’s thoughts have been with Cr Brown and best wishes offered for a speedy recovery following injuries sustained in a serious assault. Police investigations into the incident are continuing.

York Williams Bridge Replacement The bridge at the Brookton boundary on York Williams Rd (near Valentine Rd) is being replaced with a new 7 barrel culvert. The old bridge has been removed and a detour track installed. Wet weather has caused delays to the project.

Road Re-seals and New Bitumen Road reseals have been undertaken by contractors on 7.4km of the York Williams Rd and two sections of the Westdale Rd. Work on these roads is part funded through the State Regional Road Group allocations. New bitumen has been laid in the town boundary on gravel sections of Railway, Grigson, Bartram, Barnsley and Queen streets.

WANDRRA Claim Various roads and associated infrastructure in the Shire have been assessed for damage following the February emergency weather event. Cost estimates are being established for reinstatement with the aim of seeking WANDRRA (Western Australian Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements) assistance to undertake the works.

Shire Refuse Site Graeme Tuddenham is contracted to manage the refuse site for the Shire and undertakes this task professionally and with care. Following the Department of Environment’s most recent inspection (which occur annually), the Shire received a letter outlining the Refuse Site meets the requirements as set out in the licence. Thank you and congratulations are extended to Graeme for his diligence and a job well done. Unfortunately some vandalism and break-in’s have been occurring at the refuse site which is being investigated, as is the installation of security cameras. Any information you may have about others less respectful of this facility would be welcomed by the Shire. On another note, works have commenced on the long awaited upgrade of Nicholas Street (road leading to the refuse site).

Beverley Triathlon 2017 Congratulations to the dynamic Triathlon Committee, Beverley CRC, many volunteer helpers and to everyone who participated. What a fantastic event and another great day in Beverley!

Swimming Club Facilities Upgrade Hon Christian Porter MP visited Beverley in March to compete in the 2017 Beverley Triathlon and unveil the Beverley Swimming Club Rooms upgrade, which was funded through a Federal Building our Future Community Development Grant for $23,000. Congratulations to the Beverley Swimming Club on receiving these funds and for having the work completed in time for the 2017 Triathlon.

Easter 2017 It will again be a busy time in Beverley over the Easter weekend with various activities including Saturday Markets at the Station, 49th Annual Art Exhibition and 84th Annual Easter Tennis Tournament. Please take care and enjoy the time with family and friends.

The Queen’s Baton Relay wants you!

Western Australia welcomes the Queen’s Baton Relay in lead up to Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games

Western Australia is looking for local legends to carry the Queen’s Baton in Western Australia as part of the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) in the lead up to the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games (GC2018).

The Baton will arrive in Western Australia on Thursday 22 February 2018 and will spend six days travelling through 19 communities, highlighting the State’s great diversity.

Thousands of people are expected to turn out to cheer the batonbearers on.

Local legends will carry the Queen’s Baton from Albany, the departure point for WWI soldiers, north through areas including Manjimup, Bridgetown and Bunbury. After spending time in the metro area, showcasing our iconic coastline and meeting the odd quokka, the Baton will head north to Karratha for its last day on Tuesday 27 February 2018.

“A relay isn’t a relay without people, so the Queen’s Baton Relay is looking for people of all ages and abilities to run the Baton around our State,” says Ron Alexander, Director General of the Department of Sport and Recreation.

“This is your chance to be part of one of the country’s biggest community events – and you don’t need to be an athlete to be nominated.

“We want people who represent all that’s great about our communities: someone who has made a significant contribution to sport, education, the arts, culture, community or a charity.

Mr Alexander said the Relay was a chance to show off the best of Western Australia to the rest of the Commonwealth – from our oceans to the amazing outdoors, places of Aboriginal significance and proud communities which are part of who we are.

“The Baton’s journey will also inspire community pride and build excitement for the largest event to be staged in Australia in a decade.

“On a bigger playing field, this is a chance for Australia to inspire and welcome the world: exploring and celebrating the links, traditions and people that connect Australian communities with the Commonwealth.”

From today until 15 May 2017, anyone can nominate a person who inspires them to be great. Nominations can be made at gc2018.com/qbr.

GC2018 are looking for Australian citizens or people lawfully entitled to reside in Australia during the Relay period (25 December 2017 – 4 April 2018) and one of the following:

 Have achieved something extraordinary or inspired others to achieve something extraordinary.  Have made a significant contribution to sport, education, the arts, culture, charity or within their community.  Have excelled or aspire to excel athletically or personally.  Contribute to a fun, friendly, vibrant and inclusive community.  Are at least 10 years old as at 25 December 2017.

Across Australia approximately 3,800 batonbearers are needed to share the dream of the friendly Games.

The Queen’s Baton will travel through Australia for 100 days from 25 December 2017.

The Queen’s message is held in the Baton and will be read aloud at the Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018 to officially open the Games on the Gold Coast.

The Queen’s Baton Relay will pass through Albany, Denmark, Manjimup, Bridgetown, Bunbury, Rockingham, Rottnest, Fremantle, South Perth, Burswood Park, Perth, King’s Park, City Beach, Scarborough, Hillarys, Quinns Rock, Wanneroo, Guildford and Karratha.

Community Information

The State Governments’ Local Government Reform Programme seeks to create a process of continuous improvement across the sector with Councils required to develop Integrated Planning and Reporting Frameworks including plans such as the Strategic Community Plan, Corporate Business Plan, Long Term Financial Plan and Asset Management Plans (plus others).

In 2012 our rate payers and electors gave Council a very clear mandate there was limited support toward continuing with the South East Avon Regional Transition Group and potentially amalgamation. It was clear that amalgamation was not a preferred option at all for our community. Although it is unknown if Local Government will be the focus of forced amalgamations in the future, there are some who believe this will be the case.

Improving sustainability, addressing efficiencies, regional collaboration, and fostering economic development in the district, will place the Shire in a stronger position to argue against amalgamation. The Department of Local Government has developed a series of financial ratios, which when applied Unique Strokes W.A. determine if the Local Government is or has the potential to become Painting & Decorating sustainable with appropriate planning over the long term. Reg. No. 4236 Asset Management Plans have been an eye opener with the annual funding ROB BAIN shortfall for asset management, renewal and replacement challenging. This has encouraged many Local Governments to rationalise and consolidate the QUALIFIED LOCAL TRADESMEN infrastructure they are responsible or, removing it from their Asset Registers altogether. Renewal costs, including expenditure to conform to current ForFor GuaranteedGuaranteed Traditional Workmanship Workmanship & & Prompt Prompt Free Free Quotes Quotes building and universal access standards for public buildings requires Phone: 08089647 9647 21022102 evaluation against potential use of the space, social benefit gained and Mobile:Mobile: 0418 904904 013013 associated cost to the ratepayer.

This was the basis of Councils decision not to expend any more funds on the Infant Health Building and initiate its removal, whilst also seeking community support and external funding for the Cornerstone multipurpose facility to service the needs of the community into the future and contribute to the economic growth and development of the district. Proposals need to be considered in terms of capital cost, social benefit, economic return and whole of life costs including operational, maintenance and BILL CHAMBERS replacement costs.

Chartered Accountant Beverley’s 10 Year Financial Plan includes a proposed 6% annual rate & increase which facilitates an improvement in our financial ratios. The actual rate each year is determined as the budget is developed and it is Councils’ Registered Tax Agent decision to set the rate depending on the community’s needs and expectations based on the Integrated Planning process. In 15/16 this Tax return preparation increase was 4 % and the 16/17 budget 3%. It is Councils intention to continue a conservative budgetary process. Financial and accounting

Station Gallery & Platform Theatre News The Station garden is available for public use at any time; just open the gates and enjoy!

Station Gallery Have you noticed the train carriage changing colours lately? The restoration is certainly progressing, thanks to the efforts of Haydn Rayner, Barry Knight and Matt Carrol. With the sanding down completed, they have applied first and second undercoats. Haydn is in contact with the secretary of Railway Heritage WA regarding paint colours, and hopefully the correct Green and Cream hues will be available and the painting will be completed by Easter. So, in Haydn’s words, “All looks on track (no pun intended)!”

Community Engagement Event There must be someone in Beverley willing to coordinate this fabulous opportunity for our town? You would have the support of a professional arts worker (employed via a grant) throughout the year. The beginnings of the project are under way (grant application) and I was going to drive it myself but family commitments are preventing me from doing so. The idea is to bring all our budding writers, musicians, dancers, actors, and behind scenes artists (sound, lighting, costume, makeup, set design) together for a large production at the Platform Theatre. It will increase the variety of cultural activities in our community by having workshops run by professional artists experienced in community arts practice. They will support us in the delivery of a variety of artforms that will culminate in a community performance that explores the Beverley Train Station as a catalyst for contemporary folklore. Something that will be entirely inspired by this place. Please contact me if you are interested in this exciting project. Jenny 0419 040 063.

Easter Art Exhibition It’s that time of the year when the BSA exhibition secretary is busy sending out entry forms for the Annual Art Purchase Exhibition. Easter 2017 will be 49th exhibition which includes the Beverley Art Prize valued at $5,000! Besides this overall prize the town’s renowned 2D media art show, there are six other sections with prizes of $1,000 each. Other sections include a category for children so if you haven’t done it during the summer holiday, best get those pencils and paintbrushes out now kids! Anyone wishing to enter works of art into Easter Art Exhibition can pick up entry forms at either the Shire offices, the Station Gallery or contact Exhibition Secretary Kathryn McLean, ph 0427 464 050 or [email protected]

 Artist-in-Residence In March we had Amani Holbert, an artist from Los Angeles, California, who was a little afraid to be at the spooky old Station by herself, but fortunately her partner Elias from Perth was able to accompany her.

For the month of April we welcome Dianne Clark, an accomplished artist in Watercolour, Acrylic and Pastel, from Collie. Dianne will be accompanied by her husband Don, so during April please call in and see them. Dianne would like to invite all interested artists to join her on the days that the gallery is open for joint studio painting. She is offering this free of charge to the artists of Beverley and surrounding districts as she believes that this may be a better way to exchange ideas on techniques, materials, etc. in an informal manner, at the same time keeping group numbers small to ensure improved individual tuition. This will give a better experience to artists as they will be able to individually discuss and find solutions to their needs, styles, materials, techniques, etc. Dianne has sketched and painted landscapes throughout Australia, Indonesia and France since the early 1980s.Though a long-time member and exhibitor of the Watercolour Society of WA, Dianne is experienced in

Platform Theatre

CABARET & DINER en BLANC It truly was a wonderful night - great entertainment thanks to Robert Hofmann's Desperately Young at Heart cabaret which included the beautiful voice of Penny Shaw and masterful piano playing of David Wickham. And what a fabulous ambiance with everyone in white for Beverley's version of Diner en Blanc - it was to be an outdoor tres chic picnic at the Platform Theatre but rain and cold prevailed(!) so once again, like our last show, had to relocate to the Town Hall. The picnic parcels were amazing and far too inexpensive for what was offered. Many thanks to Valda and Penny for organizing the catering.

SMALL VOICES LOUDER By the time this goes to print, Small Voices Louder will have been and gone from the Platform Theatre. On Tuesday 28 March, direct from its successful premiere at this year’s Perth International Arts Festival, Performing Lines WA got the show on the road to hear about the big ideas that the kids from Beverley had to share. Small Voices Louder is a participatory performance in two parts for young people, touring regional Western Australia from 28 March to 13 April.

What is WIFE ? The roles of women on farms are significant and varied. Professional support and training to assist women fulfilling all of these roles is oen unavailable., because courses, can't usually offer what is required, or it is unaainable due to the distance and me needed to aend. This is where W.I.F.E. steps up. WIFE’s essence is to tap into the wealth of knowledge that is your neighbour, your friend, your friends friend, the lady up the road, the new girl in town or the wing aack on your local netball team and if the expert required isn’t available locally they simply truck them in! There is great benefit in discussing issues between local ladies, to help each other improve and excel in the many tasks we all take on within our farming enterprises.

Beverley Informaon Day On Tuesday 21st February, 35 ladies from York, Brookton, Cunderdin, Northam & Beverley met at the Beverley Amenies Building for an informaon day to learn about Women in Farming Enterprises (W.I.F.E), which now has 8 branches throughout Western Australia. The number of people that were able to aend, along with those that expressed interest but just couldn't make the day, was well above expectaons. It was great to hear all the specific informaon about W.I.F.E and share experiences and ideas from each other ‐ each farming family is unique and all run things differently, there is never one idea or pracce that fits all, but it is great to learn different things and review if they may or may not be suitable for your own specific operaons.

Big thank you to Janelle South (W.I.F.E West Arthur & W.I.F.E Inc Commiee Member) for making her me available and travelling up to Beverley to share her experiences and knowledge about W.I.F.E, along with Carol Veitch and Aurelie for looking aer the 11 kids in the creche that I am told were all "just gorgeous"! Thanks to Liesh Murray for allowing Aurelie who is her au pair, to spend the day with us as well.

The day wasn't possible without the generous support from our friends of W.I.F.E; ANZ, CSBP & CBH to cover venue hire, catering from Beverley Country Kitchen and the creche. It was great to have Lisa Grosskopf from ANZ in aendance to share both her industry experience and that of seng up the Victoria Plains W.I.F.E Group late last year, thanks Lisa!

So.....where to from here? Aer some great discussion and feedback from the informaon day we are excited to now have our own Beverley Branch of Women in Farming Enterprises (W.I.F.E) set up. The branch will be run & located in Beverley but open to all areas for ladies to become members and aend meengs

Warrior Wellbeing Article Give Credit Where Credit Is Due – What are your expectations?

Last week my 8 year old son participated in his first school swimming carnival, and ended up winning his first ever medal for “champion boy” in his age. Unfortunately I was away on a work trip, and of course when I spoke to the family that evening my son was the first on the end of the phone to tell me proudly of his achievement (he doubted himself and never expected to win). This recognition for effort has been amazing for his confidence and I have even noticed a positive change in his motivation towards other extra-curricular activities that had previously challenged his confidence.

A field known as “positive psychology” (focusing on one’s strengths) has come up with findings that this aids in increasing wisdom, satisfaction and a sense of purpose. It’s common sense really, how good do we feel when someone tells us we have done a good job?

There are three main areas where we can have a direct influence and use some “positive psychology” that is; in our family lives, in and around our working lives, in our community groups (sport clubs, rotary/men’s shed, church groups).

To do this effectively we have to always maintain our own good mental health and wellbeing and a definition which encapsulates this is summarised by the World Health Organisation (2007) - “a state of wellbeing in which an individual realises his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community”.

The interesting thing is that it’s almost a social and personal expectation to continually commit ourselves to our family, working, and community lives, and rightly so. These are all important areas and putting time and effort in gives us satisfaction.

Getting the balance right however between these three commitments, is tough, especially when “expectations” are not understood. In the work we do we come across a lot of misunderstanding and distress caused by individuals not communicating what their expectations are. For example a husband and wife discussing personal vs relationship expectations, a parent and teenager discussing boundaries, a boss and staff member discussing working conditions/priorities, and/or a footy coach discussing positions/roles within his team.

High expectations can be positive, it can help us grow as individuals and/or as a collective, reach achievements and hit our goals. However, many of us can also take this too far. We can easily become cynical of ourselves and others, especially when it comes to making mistakes. Shaming and blaming doesn’t help! Look for the strengths in others and yourself and don’t forget to give credit where credit is due.

BEVERLEY SOARING SOCIETY I Always Wanted To Fly: My 1st 8 months to drop with a particular concept or skill.

I always wanted to fly but jumping off a wall with a red There are 2 types of trainees at Beverley Soaring Society cloak didn’t really generate the excitement that I was - the young’uns that appear to neuro map their fine and searching for and flying a motorised aircraft was beyond gross motor skills with ease and have decades of flying the war office’s budget and she refused to get a second ahead of them. And then… just when you think you are about. nailing it, one of those really frustrating days comes along. My motor skills and logic are holidaying in Perth nd I arrived at Beverley airstrip early on Friday 22 April and whilst my body attempts to fly a glider at Beverley – was met cautiously by the googlie eyed Curlew. Shortly nothing goes the way you want it to. If you were my after I met Bob who introduced me to the Gliderman who instructor on one of those few days I apologise. I could gave me the grand tour of every nook and cranny of the feel your positive intent willing me on to get it right but Beverley Soaring Society site before he introduced me to frustratingly it was not happening. So don't knock yourself Ross for my first flight. I was absolutely hooked. So the out, that’s the crappy part of the learning curve. It was made even accident. It is clearly evident that many people over many better by those people that assisted me and had the years, in a variety of roles have contributed to ensure the confidence to let me go solo on that day. I have really enjoyed my learning journey over the past 8 Steve Hoey months, it has been intense, challenging at times and a steep learning curve. I'm a tad surprised at how much I have learned and the opportunities provided to me by the army of volunteers that have given up their time so generously

I take my hat off to the great work that the instructors do. They all have their own unique instructional style and they work with trainee pilots that have different learning styles. What impressed me most is that the key messages that they deliver are the same, particularly safety. I did at times ponder if I would have been better off with one or two instructors, but the number of times a different approach, the timing of a prompt, the variation in an explanation, a simple diagram drawn in the dirt or a detailed debriefing, often triggered the penny

Creepy crawlies here to stay Rain and warm weather stimulates Portuguese millipede activity as they escape the wet, water-soaked soil in search of a mate and drier ground. It’s this search, their attraction to light, and their extraordinary numbers that make them a nuisance to householders and businesses alike. The ultimate uninvited house-guest.

Native to southwest Europe, Portuguese millipedes (Ommatoiulus moreletii ) arrived in South Australia (SA) in 1953 and despite eradication attempts and extensive research; there remains no practical solution for their total control or eradication from the environment.

When first discovered in Roleystone, Western Australia (WA) in 1986, they were already well established. Now, they’re a widespread and common nuisance pest throughout south-west WA and are present in the ACT, NSW, VIC, TAS and SA.

Typically, the outbreaks we encounter are short-lived and associated with autumn and spring rains, and are much less frequently encountered in the cold of winter or the heat of summer.

Most prolific in the first few years after their introduction to a new area, the population will peak in the first few years before declining with time. This is likely due to a parasitic nematode, naturally present in native nematode populations, providing biological control.

Management When millipede populations are high, employ two or more control methods (cultural, physical, chemical or bio- logical) to reduce their impact and entry into buildings. Turning off unnecessary outdoor lighting and setting millipede light

44 Beverley Blarney, Edition 390 – April 2017 www.beverley.wa.gov.au

traps away from the building can reduce their attraction to your home. Placing door seals/dust strips can help prevent their entry. Insecticide barrier sprays around the home and base of walls will also help reduce their numbers and their movement up walls and drain pipes.

More information See our website: agric.wa.gov.au (search for Portuguese millipedes). Please note: The department does not provide control services for this pest and their advice is limited to that displayed on the website. If you do not have internet access, request a copy by calling 1800 084 884.

Report unfamiliar pests The Pest and Disease Information Service (PaDIS) screens enquiries for new weeds, pests and plant diseases, which could negatively impact the success of WA’s local horticulture and agricultural industries and the ability to grow home produce. The Trilogy Of Fermentation – Or The Beautiful Story of our Internal Life By Valerie Gunsch Dip. C.N.C. Mac. H.V. P.P. Clinical Nutritionist, Profemme Practitioner Email – [email protected]

Dear Reader,

After all the excitements of the last three months with Christmas, New Year, holiday and election! I am back to remind you not to forget your health. In my new series for the Blarney I would like to introduce you to fermentation.

In this new series I will introduce you to the three basic fermentations: Kefir, Kombucha and Fermented Vegetables. What if all of our health problems could be improved from focussing on just one of our organs? According to Gut Reactions: How healthy insides can improve your weight, mood and well-being. Due to society’s vast change in eating habits our fast-food hungry guts are not functioning as intended. The malleable genome (or easily influenced group of Genes which inhabit our gut) may be the very reason diseases like Cancer, Asthma, Irritable Bowl and Diabetes are prevalent in today’s ‘hustle and bustle’ society. Our fast-paced way of living dictates that the foods we ingest in conjunction with the quick fixes we take like antibiotics; compromise the health of microbiota in our gut and intestine. Now with no significant cures for these diseases around the corner, Justin and Erica Sonnenburg suggest that the gut is a good place to start. By nurturing our gut bacteria we gain more control over our immune system and therefore our overall health.

Did you know that our gut bacteria are on the endangered species list? Yep! This is due to our overly processed westernized diet, which does not consist of enough nutrients for the bacteria to survive. So let’s save the little guys! By decreasing the amount of processed food we ingest and increasing our fermented food intake, we improve the life span of our loving, nurturing bacteria. After all we are “bacteria-sapiens”. These microbes are the product of years of evolution. Imagine living life harmoniously with a stable job, a roof over your head, a loving family and one day – bam! You have lost your job, the roof over your head has burned to the ground and your family is lost to a zombie apocalypse. Yes, it’s like that. Everything we are surrounded by becomes a part of us. We are host to an entire city of living things. However bad we treat these living things, the gut bacteria often adapts to dietary changes for the bad or the good. For example, our ancestor’s microbiota would seasonally adapt in conjunction with whatever food was available. This is what microbiota is currently doing in an attempt to survive our 21st century diet. This doesn’t constitute bad eating habits; we are still inflicting future health issues upon ourselves by ignoring our microbiota’s livelihood. So how can we re-balance our gut bacteria in order to function accordingly? Our ancestors foraged for fibrous foods and hunted for lean, gamey meat and they possessed the most ‘normal’ gut bacteria in comparison to a current healthy individual. Food in its most natural state is the most beneficial for our overall health and the preservation of gut bacteria. So you may be wondering why gut health experts are pressing for more people to be ingesting fermented foods. This is were food like Kombucha, Kefir, Sauerkraut, Kimchi, Pickled Vegetables, Sourdough Bread and the like come in handy. These foods are culture/friendly bacteria and are extremely beneficial for improving gut functionality.

Keep well until next time.

THE BLUE LINE Beverley Police Station 57 Hunt Road, Beverley WA 6304 [email protected] Phone: 9646 3333 Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 Hello Everyone,

April sees increased traffic on our roads during the school holidays and Easter period. Targeting unsafe road-user behaviour is one of the key priorities for WA Police and plays an essential role in minimising the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads. WA police will continue to maximise efforts to reduce injury on our roads and ensure road users are protected from unlawful and antisocial road behaviour.

We will enforce traffic laws, target unsafe road user behaviour and build road policing capacity through partnerships and community engagement. There will be zero tolerance to mobile phone and restraint offences, and traffic powers will be utilised to keep recidivist traffic offenders off the roads. Targeting unsafe road-user behaviour is one of the key priorities for WA Police and plays an essential role in minimising the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads.

Towards Zero is the State’s Road Safety Strategy and is underpinned by the safe system approach and aims to improve road safety through four cornerstones:-

 Safe road use – Compliant, alert* and safety conscious road users play a vital role in preventing crashes  Safe roads and roadsides  Safe speeds  Safe vehicles

* Driver Reviver is an initiative that aims to reduce fatigue related crashes by encouraging travellers to take regular breaks in their journey by visiting an operating site (these sites run predominantly during peak periods such as Easter and Christmas).

Facts about Fatigue  There are many causes of fatigue, with driving for a long period of time seen as one of the key causes to fatigue related road trauma.

Community Information Residents are advised that the Shire has obtained a Damage Licence to control the numbers of Little and Long Billed Corella’s by way of shooting. A shooting program will commence immediately and continue as required until 30 June 2017. Shooting will occur at dawn and dusk.

THE BLUE LINE Beverley Police Station 57 Hunt Road, Beverley WA 6304 [email protected] Phone: 9646 3333 Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000

 There is a higher fatigue risk when driving at night time and on rural roads. The WA 10 Year Crash Statistics report showed that fatigue was a factor in more than double serious crashes on rural WA roads between midnight and 6.00am

 The reaction time of a driver who has been awake for 17-19 hours is similar to the reaction time of a driver with a blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) of 0.05

 Not sleeping for 20-25 hours will reduce a drivers reaction time to the equivalent reaction time of someone with a BAC of 0.10

 Shift workers are six times more likely to be involved in a fatigue related road crash than other workers. Research shows that there are three times as many fatal accidents at work during the night shift (11pm – 7am) as during the day.

So please ensure you are well rested before driving for a long period and take adequate rest breaks along the way.

DID YOU KNOW? I have been asked for clarification about last months “Did You Know” in relation to the use of mobile phones while driving/moving, in particular, parked versus being stationary:- The penalty for the driver of a motor vehicle using a mobile phone while moving or stationary but not parked is $400 and 3 demerit points. If you have moved off the road or into a parking bay and your vehicle is stationary (completely stopped) then it is considered you have attempted to comply. So until next month, take care and have a safe Easter.

JUNIOR WINTER SPORTS

Now that the basketballs, goggles, bathers, tennis racquets and cricket bats are being put away, we start looking towards the new season of football and netball.

Junior football and netball will begin in week one of term 2. A Facebook page will be set up for Junior Sport and further details on times and fixtures, as well as other up to date communication, will be available there.

NetSetGo and Junior netball - previous members will be emailed registration details when they are available.

Anyone wishing to start playing netball from Pre Primary to year 8 are invited to contact Sally Kilpatrick at [email protected] .

Auskick and Nippers Football – to register (PP to yr 8), please contact Mark Thomas at [email protected] . There will also be registration forms available from school. Boys and girls are welcome and all skill levels catered for.

Football needs coaches. We may have enough for Nippers (yrs 4 to 8) but if you can assist please contact Mark.

At this stage we have no coaches for Auskick (PP to yr 3) despite numerous approaches to individuals. If two or three people aren’t forthcoming to run Auskick, a roster will be put together with all parents contributing. If this doesn’t work, Auskick won’t run. For further details on the coaching role please contact Mark.

Basketball – Basketball ran for the first time this sea- son using the Aussie Hoops program, starting in fourth term last year and finishing on the 29th March. A huge thanks to Mark Thomas for co-ordinating and running the sessions and to his helpers, primarily Corinna Thomas.

There were 13 kids from years two to eight who played. Under the expert tutelage of Mr Thomas, the development of skills was tremendous and from a very low skills base and understanding of the rules at the beginning of the season there were some hard fought competitive three on three games towards the end.

It would be great to see basketball run again next season but as with all junior sport, helpers are required. It is essential that at least two people are available for each session so if you can assist, please contact Mark so this successful basketball program can be run again.

LEGO CLUB LEGO club on Tuesday’s 3.00pm - 4.00pm, $2 per session With a healthy afternoon tea provided.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks at the footy club with pre-season training ramping up. Numbers at training have been great and we encourage people to come down and join us from 6pm.

To test our legs the club participated in the recent Beverley Triathlon, with 7 teams battling it out across the swim, bike and ride. It was a great morning and the club would like to pass on its appreciation to the committee who ensured the entire day ran smoothly.

To test the boys even further, that afternoon the Beverley Football Club hosted a round robin scratch match with Brookton/Pingelly and Corrigin. It was great to watch some football under lights. At the end of the matches each team went away with a win and we thank the towns for their involvement in the afternoon. There is still one scratch match to go against Wickepin at East Fremantle oval.

Fixtures for the season have now been finalised and will be made available to members and supporters over the coming weeks. We have managed to secure a number of Saturday games again this year, so we will be holding some functions throughout the season.

Our first game will be against Railways in Northam on the 9th April, so we would love to see some supporters there to help us kick off the 2017 season. Our first home game isn’t until the first week of May so the club will be on the road a bit to start with.

Our first function of the year will be the clubs annual fish night. This will be held on Friday 21st April. We would love to see as many of our members and supporters at this event as possible. Come down and watch the whole team train before we announce the team and have a meal. Further details will be via our Facebook page, like us at: https://www.facebook.com/beverley.footballclub or search Beverley Football-Club.

Busy bees were held in March and April and we thank the many members who turned out on the various days to help get our course into shape. The recent flooding, while not as bas a it could have been, still caused considerable damage with uprooted trees, washed away greens and damaged bridges being the major areas of concern.

Thanks go to Fred Sing, Gavin Sazanov and Graham Hagan for their excellent coordination of the member’s efforts which has managed to get the course back into good condition for the coming season.

Special thanks also to Alan Hammond, Mark Edwards, Cliff Doncon and Andrew Shaw for their donations of machinery and materials, without which the heavy work would not have been completed on time, and to Don Davis for being our plant operator on the day.

On Saturday 15 April we are having a fund raising stall next to IGA. If anyone has something they like to donate could you please bring it along by 9.00am on the morning of the stall.
