Running Head: WHEN THE WHOLE WORLD TIPS When the Whole World Tips: The Buddhist Teaching of Equanimity for Parents Celia Landman December 2018 Advisors: Dr. Melissa Jean and Dr. Nancy Waring WHEN THE WHOLE WORLD TIPS 1 Abstract Parents witnessing suffering in their children activate the shared pain circuitry of empathy which may lead to “empathetic distress” (Singer & Klimecki, 2014, p. 875) precipitating hopelessness and despair. These common emotions in parents dealing with children’s illness or injury are the greatest predictors of depression (Abramson, Seligman, & Teasdale, 1978; Gilbert, 1992; Wilner & Goldstein, 2001). The author offers the Buddhist teachings of equanimity as an antidote to parental helplessness and despair. Equanimity engages compassion which activates the neural network of affiliation, love, reward, and positive affect (Anālayo, 2015; Desbordes et al., 2015; Feldman, 2017; Hanh, 1998; Klimecki, Leiberg, Lamm, & Singer, 2012; Kilmecki, Leiber, Ricard, & Singer, 2013; Olendzki, 2010; Rothberg, 2010; Salzberg, 1995; Singer & Klimenki, 2014). The components of equanimity include compassion, wisdom, and unfailing love (Anālayo, 2015; Desbordes et al., 2015; Feldman, 2017; Hanh, 1998; Olendzki, 2010; Rothberg, 2010; Salzberg, 1995). The addition of compassion, the intention to actively relieve suffering, helps maintain emotional sovereignty and protects from the common occurrence of burnout due to despair and hopelessness (Desbordes et al., 2015; Feldman, 2017; Hanh, 1998; Klimecki, Leiberg, Lamm, & Singer, 2012; Kilmecki, Leiber, Ricard, & Singer, 2013; Olendzki, 2010; Romm, 2007; Singer & Klimenki, 2014). This ancient Buddhist practice supports the restoration of intention and desire to effect change and offers a radically different approach to caring for both child and parent. supporting evidence demonstrating the contribution of equanimity to the wellbeing of parents facing difficulty with their children. It is my hope that these findings establish a concrete rationale for the development of equanimity as a mental health protection for parents. Parents encountering health or emotional crises in their children often become despairing and experience overwhelm and depression due to feeling powerless to create change during a painful interlude. The Buddhist practice of equanimity encourages the non-preferential acceptance of what is, discouraging falling into despair or panic. Equanimity allows for a compassionate response to the suffering of another without the emotional blending that often permeates a child/parent relationship thereby protecting from helplessness and depression. The use of equanimity to support parents is the direct connection to my creative thesis which includes the first three chapters of a manuscript written in an easily understandable style and offering Buddhist teachings on balance, wisdom, and grounding practices for parents in understandable moments of fear and uncertainty when life holds unpredictable outcomes for their children. Equanimity and Buddhist Wisdom for Parents In the first part of this paper, I will address the conditions that create emotional pain in parents witnessing their children

    BUDDHIST MILITARISM BEYOND TEXTS: THE IMPORTANCE OF RITUAL DURING THE SRI LANKAN CIVIL WAR Iselin Frydenlund MF Norwegian School of Theology1 Abstract: This article addresses Buddhist militarism by exploring monastic-military ritual interactions during the Sri Lankan civil war, lasting from 1983 to 2009. Much has been written on the importance of Buddhism to Sinhala nationalism, the redefinition of the Buddhist monastic role in response to colonialism and the modernization process, as well as the development of a Buddhist just-war ideol- ogy. While these perspectives in various ways emphasize the importance of the Buddhist monastic order in pushing forward a Sinhala Buddhist nationalist agenda, little attention has been paid to the performative aspects of Buddhist militarism. Based on ethnographic data gathered during the Norwegian-facilitated peace talks (2000–2008), this article shows how rituals became crucial in conveying support to the state’s military efforts without compromising religious authority. By looking at Buddhist monastic ritual interaction in military institutions, this paper argues that the acceptance of the use of warfare is less anchored in systematized just-war thinking than the term “Buddhist just-war ideology” seems to suggest. Rather, through an anthropological approach to Buddhism and violence, this article shows that the term “Buddhist implicit militarism” better captures the rationale behind the broad monastic engagement with military institutions beyond minority positions of radical Buddhist militancy during a given “exception” in history. The essay concludes that monastic-military ritual interaction is a social field in which this “implicit militarism” is most clearly articulated.     25 ESSENTIAL QUALITIES OF A YOGA THERAPIST BY JOSEPH LE PAGE IYT Yoga therapists cultivate twenty-five qualities that allow them to practice effectively. These qualities are relevant to all Yoga therapists regardless of the tradition in which they have been trained and have a direct impact on students and clients who have selected Yoga therapy as part of their wellness program. 1. Selfless Service: sevā. The Yoga therapist receives a fair compensation for their professional services, but they also maintain an attitude of selfless service, a sense of a larger vision than their own personal sustenance. 2. Grounding: dṛḍha bhūmiḥ. The Yoga therapist cultivates a sense of grounding and stability at all levels of being. This begins at the level of the physical body where they develop the strength and stability to assist students and clients with poses easily. This grounding is also important at the psycho-emotional level so that any imbalance within clients or students can be met from a place of stability and centering. 3. Self-healing: svacikitsā. At all times, the therapist needs to uphold the inherent ability of all clients and students for self-healing. This self-healing process begins with the therapists themselves who learn to connect with the essence of healing within their own being, bringing that healing nectar into their own lives and also showing students and clients how to access it. 4. Body Awareness: kāya cetana. Awareness is the foundation of Yoga therapy and body awareness involves deepening our understanding and sensitivity of all five koshas. This enhanced awareness is therapeutic in itself and serves as the foundation for both evaluating a student’s needs and for choosing all of the appropriate Yoga tools and techniques.

Adherents of different religions also turn their thoughts toward the new millennium, and as Buddhists we might briefly ponder the question what the Dhamma can offer the world in the years ahead. From one angle it could be said that what Buddhism can offer humankind today is exactly what it has been holding out for the past twenty-five centuries: an acute diagnosis of the human condition and a clear path to final liberation from suffering. But while this statement is correct as far as it goes, it is not yet sufficient; for it does not take account of the fact that in any age the aspects of the Dhamma to be emphasized, and the way they are to be expressed, must address the particular problems faced by the people living in that age. The Buddha’s teaching acquires its incisive relevance, not merely by the cogency of its broad generalities, but by attuning its formulations to the precise problems that loom so large in the consciousness of the particular period in which it has taken root. Thus for the Dhamma to preserve its vitality and strength, it is not enough merely to repeat hallowed formulas inherited from the past, however true they might be in their own right.

Venerable Khippa Panno was ordained in Vietnam. But it is the practice of the vehicle of great enlightenment (mahābodhiyāna) to improve their skillfulness in accumulating the requisites for enlightenment. Traleg Kyabgon Rinpoche renders “pāramīs” into English as “transcendent action”. He understands “transcendent action” in the sense of non-egocentric action.     Engaged Buddhism East and West: Encounters with the Visions, Vitality, and Values of an Emerging Practice Paula Green The latter decades of the 20th century witnessed the spread of Engaged Buddhism throughout Asia and the West, championed by Thich Nhat Hanh of Vietnam and building on earlier experiments especially in India and Sri Lanka. Based on wide interpretations of traditional Buddhist teachings, these new practices became tools of social change, creatively utilized by progressive monks, educators, reformers, environmentalists, medical doctors, researchers, activists, and peacebuilders. The experimental nature of a kind of sociopolitical and peace-oriented Dharma brought new followers to Buddhism in the West and revived Buddhist customs in the Asian lands of its birth and development. Traditionally inward and self-reflecting, Engaged Buddhism expanded Buddhist teaching to promote intergroup relations and societal structures that are inherently compassionate, just, and nonviolent. Its focus, embodied in the phrase, Peace Writ Large, signifies a greater magnitude and more robust agenda for peace than the absence of war. This chapter will focus on the emerging phenomenon of Engaged Buddhism East and West, looking at its traditional roots and contemporary branches, and discerning its impact on peacefulness, justice, tolerance, human and environmental rights, and related sociopolitical concerns. It will explore the organizational leadership and participation in engaged Buddhists processes, and what impact this movement has in both primarily Buddhist nations as well as in countries where Buddhists are a tiny minority and its practitioners may not have been born into Buddhist families. In early Buddhism, how- ever, it developed into a progressive four-stage suprasensory experience of altered consciousness, and has become uniquely Buddhist.2 The importance of dhyana in early Buddhism is attested by the fact that we have numerous discourses where the Buddha describes his experiences of them.3 In such discourses, the Buddha frequently admonishes his disciples to attain dhyana. In the suttas, we also see the word jhna used in both its two basic Buddhist senses: the general sense of “meditation,” and as “dhyana” or “mental absorption,” such as in this discourse: If a monk cultivates the first dhyana (jhāna) for even the duration of a mere finger-snap, then, bhikshus, he is called a monk who dwells as one whose meditation is not in vain (aritta-j,jhāna): a doer of the Teacher’s teaching, a follower of his advice. He does not eat the country’s alms in vain [for nothing].4 (Eka,dhamma Acchar,saghata Sutta, A 1.20/1:38) The well known meditation monk, Ajahn Brahmavaso, opens his insightful experiential paper on “The Jhnas” (2003) with this important declaration: In the original Buddhist scriptures, there is only one word for any level of meditation. Jhna designates meditation proper, where the meditator’s mind is stilled from all thought, secluded from all five-sense activity and is radiant with other-worldly bliss.

The eight spokes of the wheel represent the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism, the most important Way of Practice.
