More than one million people call Jacksonville and the surrounding North Florida area home, making the city one of the fastest growing in the United States. Those people are spread across a city that is the largest in land area in the 48 contiguous states. Jacksonville and the North Florida area feature a host of festivals and gatherings throughout the year and put on some of the best firework displays in the nation. The St. Johns River — which begins in Central Florida and flows north — runs through the heart of the city before emptying out into the Atlantic Ocean along Jacksonville’s coastline. The river is the longest in the state, covering more than 310 miles. The hub of Jacksonville’s growing entertainment district in the Downtown area, The Jacksonville Landing is a cool place to dine and shop on the St. Johns River. Jacksonville’s deep-water port is the 14th largest in the U.S. and handles shipments from around the globe. Jacksonville has a strong military presence and is home to both Mayport — the third largest naval station in the United States, housing 22 ships and six helicopter squadrons — and Naval Air Station Jacksonville. Multi-platinum recording artist and Jacksonville natives Yellowcard featured the Acosta Bridge, one of Jacksonville’s seven bridges, on its 2007 album cover Paper Walls. During the early 20th century, Jacksonville was known as the “Winter Film Capital of the World,” serving as a winter home to many of the nation’s major motion picture studios. The North Florida area is still a popular shooting location with the area playing host to such films as G.I. Jane, Basic — which starred Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta — the HBO movie Recount, Lonely Hearts — which starred James Gandolfini, John Travolta and Salma Hayek — as well as Sunshine State and several others. Jacksonville is consistently rated one of the “Hottest Cities in America” for business expansions and relocations in an annual poll featured in the magazine Expansion Management. Ranked No. 8 in 2006, it has been in the top 10 for six straight years and is the only city to claim the No. 1 spot three times. The city’s urban park system is the largest in the United States. UNF is only a short drive away from the city’s most popular malls — the St. Johns Town Center, the Avenues and Regency Square — and movie theaters — Tinseltown, AMC 24 at Regency and Regal at the Avenues. The St. Johns Town Center is located just down the road from UNF and features an outdoor shopping area with multiple popular stores and restaurants. Former Jacksonville mayor John Delaney is UNF’s current president. Jacksonville Fast Facts...

It was officially named and announced on Jan. 23, 2006, at a press conference on the UNF campus. The University of North Florida and Jacksonville University battle annually for the “SunTrust Old Wooden Barrel,” which is awarded to the school with the most victories over the other during a school year. The “SunTrust Old Wooden Barrel” will be housed in the winning school’s athletic department until the conclusion of the final event of the following year. Jacksonville and North Florida both field teams in 14 sports (men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s indoor and outdoor track and men’s golf). Each time the Ospreys and Dolphins face each other, the game will count toward the Suntrust River City Rumble standings. The exception is individual sports (i.e. cross country, track and golf), where the team that finishes higher at the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship will earn one win for its school. Established in 1982, the Osprey Club is the fundraising arm of the University of North Florida Athletics Department. With all UNF student-athletes in mind, the Osprey Club provides support for scholarships, athletic facilities, and sport-specific operating funds through direct donations and special events. Donors to the Osprey Club partner with UNF to help create champions, not only on the playing field, but also in the classroom and for life.
