• Hotlanta Squares and all of us here at Gone with the Windmill want to welcome you to Atlanta for the 28th annual IAGSDC convention. We have all been working hard to make your stay in Atlanta a memorable one.

Square dancing has served as a vehicle to bring us together once a year in a

beautiful hotel in a great city, and we are all very proud to be your hosts this year. As you can see from an article in this program about Jimmy Carter, one of 's most famous sons, square dancing can truly change one's life. As we look around the dance halls this weekend and see the wonderful friends we might never have met, we know that square dancing has changed us all for good.

Thank you all for coming. Yellow rocks to everyone, and enjoy your time in Atlanta. Dear Convention Attendees,

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the International Association of Gay Square Dance Clubs, l welcome you to the 28'h Annual IAGSDC Convention, Gone with the Windmill. • I would like to thank the Gone with the Windmill Board of Directors and all those who have worked hard to make this event happen. It is a Jong road from the time a group decides to host a convention to the moment they welcome dancers, culminating in a weekend filled with dancing, friendships and memories that will last forever. And I want to thank you for the tireless efforts and countless hours in making this a reality. Hosting this year's convention in Atlanta has special meaning to the local community, as Hotlanta Squares celebrates their I o•h anniversary. Please congratulate them as you see them throughout the convention and do whatever you can to help them celebrate this weekend as well. On a personal note, I get a special feeling when I attend opening ceremonies of a conventions. It's amazing to look around the room, filled with dancers and friends I've met over the years, and try to comprehend how much each and every one of you have invested in learning to dance, in calling, and in supporting your clubs in so many different ways. That dedication makes square dancing possible in all of our lives. As you take part in the convention, enjoy each part that makes it special for you. Then take that joy and those experiences back to your friends and your community. Reach out and share that Jove, so that square dancing will last for years to come.

Happy Dancing, ~/r?-- Robert Hazen 20I0-2012 IA GS DC Chairperson

8 "If I hadn't been a square dancer, I would not have been President"

In April of 2005 and 2006, The Tune Dogs played a square dance for President Jimmy Carter in Plains, G• . Here was part of his Sunday sermon the next day:

Tune Dogs Playing For Jimmie Carter"When I came home from the Navy, Rosalynn and I wanted to reach out and get to know th ings about our past life - I had left here (Plains, Georgia) when I was 16. I came back after 11 years an d we wanted to lea rn the people around here. So, we joined a square dance club in Dawson at the American Leg ion Post - the group was called Merry Legs . . . and we had about 50 people that met every Friday night. .. and they were from about 10 local counties.

Later I ran for the Georgia senate . . . at the spur of the moment, I wasn't planning on being a politician. The election was stolen from me - 126 people voted alphabetically - down to the third letter in their name, some of them were dead, some of them were in prison - they all voted against me . But eventually, I won by 66 votes. So you see, if I hadn't had those 50 people, you see in 1O counties, I would have lost my election, I would never have been state se nator, I would never have been Governor - and if I had lost that first election, I would never have ru n again.

So you make can innocent decision to have a good time, and when you look back on it, it is the ki nd of a thing that changes your life ."
