Kriterien für die Aufnahme in den Katalog waren eine Mitgliederanzahl von mindestens 4 Galaxien bei maximalen Helligkeitsunterschieden von 3mag, Kompaktheit der Gruppe und Isolation nach außen. Ziel der Zusammenstellungen waren unter anderem Untersuchungen über Dunkle Materie. Danach wurde er 1953 wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter der Carnegie Institution of Washington, für die er am Mount-Wilson- Observatorium und am Palomar-Observatorium forschte. 1955 wurde er Forschungsassistent an der Indiana University und 1957 Angestellter des Mount- Palomar-Observatoriums, wo er 29 Jahre lang tätig war. Arp wurde bekannt für die umstrittene Theorie, nach der die Rotverschiebung speziell von Quasaren eine bisher unbekannte nicht- kosmologische Ursache hat und daher zur Bestimmung der Entfernung nicht geeignet ist. Damit stellte er eine der Grundlagen der Urknalltheorie in Frage. Ebenso vertrat er eine alternative Gravitationstheorie im Sinne der Le-Sage-Gravitation (G.Louis Le-Sage, 1724- 1803). Als Halton Arp am Palomar-Observatorium in Ungnade fiel, holte ihn Kippenhahn, der in den 1980er Jahren das Max-Planck- Institut für Astrophysik (MPA) in Garching bei München leitete, mit einem Stipendium nach München. Ab 1983 wurde Halton Arp als unbezahlter Gastwissenschaftler am MPA geführt. Arp stellte auch einen Katalog ungewöhnlicher Galaxien zusammen, den Atlas of Peculiar Galaxies. Er war Professor an der University of California, Los Angeles. Zu den Themen seiner Forschung gehörten unter anderem Planetarische Nebel, besonders hervorzuheben ist aber sein Beitrag zu den Anfängen der beobachtenden Kosmologie. Auf der Basis des Palomar Observatory Sky Survey erstellte er seit den 1950er Jahren den Abell-Katalog von Galaxienhaufen, mit dessen Hilfe erstmals die Struktur des Universums bis zu einer Rotverschiebung von etwa 0,2 untersucht werden konnte, und der bis heute von Bedeutung geblieben ist. Besonderheiten des Abell-Katalogs Der Katalog ist eine erweiterte Version von George Ogden Abells ursprünglichem nördlichem Katalog von 1958, welcher nur 2712 Galaxienhaufen enthielt, um weitere 1361 Haufen aus den zuvor nicht erfassten Teilen des Südhimmels. Der Katalog entstand durch Inspektion der rot- empfindlichen Aufnahmen des Palomar Observatory Sky Survey. Die südliche Ergänzung stammt aus Aufnahmen des UK Schmidt-Teleskops. Jeder der enthaltenen Haufen umfasst mindestens 30 Galaxien zwischen der Helligkeit des dritthellsten Haufen- mitglieds m3 und zwei Magnituden schwächer (m3+2). We present in this paper a substructure and spectroimaging study of the Coma cluster of galaxies based on XMM- Newton data. XMM-Newton performed a mosaic of observations of Coma to ensure a large coverage of the cluster. We add the different pointings together and fit elliptical beta-models to the data. We subtract the cluster models from the data and look for residuals, which can be interpreted as substructure. We find several significant structures: the well-known subgroup connected to NGC 4839 in the South-West of the cluster, and another substructure located between NGC 4839 and the centre of the Coma cluster. Constructing a hardness ratio image, which can be used as a temperature map, we see that in front of this new structure the temperature is significantly increased (higher or equal 10 keV). We interpret this temperature enhancement as the result of heating as this structure falls onto the Coma cluster. We furthermore reconfirm the filament-like structure South-East of the cluster centre.

Tennant2, and Roberto Soria3 Submitted to Astrophysical Journal ABSTRACT Maps of low-inclination nearby galaxies in Sloan Digitized Sky Survey u − g, g − r and r − i colors are used to determine whether Ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) are predominantly associated with star-forming regions of their host galaxies. An empirical selection criterion is derived from colors of H ii regions in M 81 and M 101 that differentiates between the young, blue stellar component and the older disk and bulge population. This criterion is applied to a sample of 58 galaxies of Hubble type S0 and later and verified through an application of Fisher’s linear discriminant analysis. It is found that 60% (49%) of ULXs in optically-bright environments are within regions blueward of their host galaxy’s H ii regions compared to only 27% (0%) of a control sample according to the empirical (Fisher) criterion. This is an excess of 3σ above the 32% (27%) expected if the ULXs were randomly distributed within their galactic hosts. This indicates a ULX preference for young, ∼<10 Myr, OB associations. However, none of the ULX environments have the morphology and optical brightness suggestive of a massive young super star cluster though several are in extended or crowded star-forming (blue) environments that may contain clusters unresolved by Sloan imaging. Ten of the 12 ULX candidates with estimated X-ray luminosities in excess of 3×1039 ergs s−1 are equally divided among the group of ULX environments redward of H ii regions and the group of optically faint regions.

ABSTRACT We present new central stellar velocity dispersion measurements for 428 galaxies in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of bright, northern galaxies. Of these, 142 have no previously published measurements, most being rela- −1 tively late-type systems with low velocity dispersions (∼<100kms ). We provide updates to a number of literature dispersions with large uncertainties. Our measurements are based on a direct pixel-fitting technique that can ac- commodate composite stellar populations by calculating an optimal linear combination of input stellar templates. The original Palomar survey data were taken under conditions that are not ideally suited for deriving stellar veloc- ity dispersions for galaxies with a wide range of Hubble types. We describe an effective strategy to circumvent this complication and demonstrate that we can still obtain reliable velocity dispersions for this sample of well-studied nearby galaxies.
