GAUGE:

13 sts + 18 rows = 4 in. (10 cm) in pattern stitch.

STITCH EXPLANATION:

Yo () An increase that also creates a small decorative hole (eyelet) in the fabric, worked as follows: 1. Bring yarn to front, between the needles. 2. Take yarn to back, over the right needle. This creates the new st. You are now ready to proceed with the next st as instructed.

PATTERN STITCH Eyelet Pattern (multiple of 5 sts) Row 1 (RS): P1, k3, p1. Row 2: K1, p3, k1. Row 3: P1, yo, k3tog, yo, p1. Row 4: K1, p3, k1. Rep Rows 1-4 for Eyelet pattern.

NOTES: 1. Shawl is worked in one piece with increases for shaping. 2. A circular needle is used to accommodate the large number of sts. Work back and forth in rows on circular needle as if working on straight needles.

SHAWL Cast on 157 sts. Set up Row 1: Sl 1, knit to end of row. Set up Row 2: Sl 1, k2, place marker (pm), k75 pm, k1, pm, k to last 3 sts, pm, k3. Increase Row (RS): Sl 1, k2, slip marker (sm), yo, work Row 1 of Eyelet pattern across to next marker, yo, sm, k1, sm, yo, work Row 1 of Eyelet pattern to next marker, yo, sm, k3. Next Row: Sl 1, k2, sm, work next row of Eyelet pattern across to next marker, sm, k1, sm, work next row of Eyelet pattern to next marker, sm, k3. Increase Row: Sl 1, k2, sm, yo, work next row of Eyelet pattern across to next marker, yo, sm, k1, sm, yo, work next row of Eyelet pattern to next marker, yo, sm, k3. Note: As you continue to increase, work the inc sts in St st (k on RS, p on WS) until you have a multiple of 5 inc sts, then incorporate the inc sts into the established Eyelet pattern. Rep the last 2 rows until the piece measures about 18 1/2 in. (47 cm) from beg, end with a Row 4 of the Eyelet pattern as the last row you work. Next Row: Sl 1, knit to end of row, removing markers as you come to them. Next Row: Sl 1, knit to end of row. Bind off.
