  • 188 Public Relations Practice in English County Cricket: a Case
Public Relations Practice in English County Cricket: A Case Study of Durham County Cricket Club and Yorkshire County Cricket Club Maria K Hopwood Teesside Business School, University of Teesside, Middlesbrough, UK Introduction This paper is a qualitative critical evaluation and analysis of the current level of public relations activity in English domestic First Class County cricket. The paper is the outcome of research which began in September 2002 and which was concluded in April 2003. The basis for this paper is a completed case study of Durham and Yorkshire County Cricket Clubs. These two clubs were chosen as the focus of the research because Durham CCC is the youngest First Class County Club and Yorkshire is one of the oldest, two very different organisations, then, operating in the same industry sector and market place. Both clubs currently reside in the second division of the English County Championship, are culturally and ideologically very different and, because they are both located in the North of England, are great rivals. Most modern spectator sports operate as businesses and are having to adopt and adapt to the core business functions of marketing, finance and human resource management. A key objective of this strategy is building and maintaining mutually beneficial relationships with a range of publics, an objective that can only be achieved through the systematic and structured implementation of excellent public relations. Public relations is still considered to be a young profession and by some as a disreputable activity. However, it is proving to be a most valuable tool in sports management and promotion.

  • Women's County Championship 2017
WOMEN’S COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS FIXTURES 2016-17 Page | 1 INTRODUCTION Thank you to everyone who took part in last season’s County Championship competition, especially all the players and volunteers who made it such a great success. The feedback from the pilot has been positive, with some useful lessons for the coming season. I am pleased to announce that the regional plate competition will be expanded in 2016/17 to a national competition, this is following your feedback and the number of counties who expressed a wish to take part in a national competition. It is the committee’s intention to continue to look at the competition structures and how best to meet its objective in Season 2017/18. We will continue to strive to provide the most appropriate playing opportunities for the players. Attached are the fixtures for next season, you will notice there has been some movement between the plate and cup. Where possible the committee has mirrored when the women’s and men’s teams have their home fixtures so counties have the opportunity to hold double headers. If there is disagreement between the two participating counties on when the game can be played the women’s fixture should be held on the Sunday of the specified weekend. In the following weeks we will be sending out information confirming the regulations and the financial support package available to each county together with advice on effective delivery of County matches. To help with trials and selection, eligibility for the county remains the same as last year. If anyone has any questions about eligibility, please contact Richard Tamplin (020 8831 6761).

  • The Financial Health of English Cricket: Not Out, Yet
Article Howzat? The Financial Health of English Cricket: Not Out, Yet Daniel Plumley *, Rob Wilson, Robbie Millar and Simon Shibli Sport Business Management, Sheffield Hallam University, Sheffield S1 1WB, UK; [email protected] (R.W.); [email protected] (R.M.); [email protected] (S.S.) * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 21 December 2018; Accepted: 08 February 2019; Published: 19 February 2019 Abstract: In 1997 a review of the financial health of English county cricket highlighted strategic weaknesses within the professional game, principally an over-reliance by clubs on the annual grants provided to them by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). Without such grants the teams, in general terms, would be insolvent. Using the financial statements of the First Class Cricket Counties, this paper explores how the financial position and performance of the county game has changed, 20 years on from the seminal study. A series of structural changes to the game had been made, yet financial problems are still evident. Counties are as reliant on central grant income as they were in 1997, although there are cases where clubs have made strategic enhancements and are becoming self-sustainable as going concerns. Rather than the ECB directly funding county revenue it should be working in collaboration with individual clubs to achieve developments in the game from the grassroots upwards, in order to help clubs grow their own revenue streams. Keywords: finance; financial health; cricket; professional team sport; profit maximisation; subsidy; grants JEL Classification: G, Z2, Z23 1. Introduction In 1997, just over 20 years ago, a paper published by Shibli and Wilkinson-Riddle in the Journal of Applied Accounting Research examined the financial health of English county cricket, specifically the finances of the 18 first-class counties.
