Just finished national tour with Brett Dennen compelling, and ultimately cathartic: What Morello lacks in Another national headlining tour starts at the end of January subtlety, he makes up for in visceral feeling.” - Los Angeles Times Mike Doughty on books, drugs, Soul Coughing and more with the Boston Globe “Mike Doughty assures us that his forthcoming memoir, “The Book of Drugs,’’ has “been vetted to kingdom come.’’ The engrossing and extremely candid book, due out Feb. 1 on Da Capo Press, chronicles everything from the singer-songwriter’s odd-man-out childhood growing up an artsy type in a military family at West Point, to his incredibly combative relationship with his bandmates in the ’90s alt-rock group Soul Coughing, to his substance abuse and some of the people with whom he abused those substances, including the late Jeff Buckley. We recently chatted with Doughty, who has been sober for more than five years and comes to the Paradise on Tuesday with his Band Fantastic in support of his insidiously earwormy album Yes and Also Yes.

Q. What was the inspiration to write “The Book of Drugs’’? A. One of the main motivators was the fact that I just felt like I’d been threatening to write a book, period, for so long that I needed to actually be a guy that wrote a book. Other than that, basically I got a new manager who said you should do stuff that is not music because there’s not a lot of money in it. These are all just stories that I’ve been telling at dinner and over drinks for years. Q. It’s engrossing, but I did wonder, “If this is what he’s telling, I can’t imagine what he thought was out of bounds.’’ A. (Laughs.) There were a couple of things that other people had done that were really, really horrible in a way that it would’ve brought evil into their lives. And the other thing is that I sat down with a [female friend] and said, “Look, there was a lot of really hor- rible [stuff] that happened when we were living together.’’ And she said, “I know and you write about it in the book and that’s fine. You wrote about this, blah, blah, blah of course?’’ And I said, “I don’t remember that, but I did write about this, blah, blah, blah.’’ And she said, “I don’t remember that.’’ (Laughs.) So I suspect every single person in the book has a totally different set of memories than I do. Q. You do not disguise or soft-pedal your anger and frustration toward your former Soul Coughing bandmates. Have they read it and given you feedback? A. No. I did not seek feedback. (Laughs.) And when it comes out I’m going to make them buy their copies. Q. Why did you make the choice not to name them? A. There’s not a vengeance angle here. I’m not looking to get back at anybody. I don’t know, I guess [I didn’t name them] to make it less hurtful, to make it more diplomatic. If somebody wants to Google it, that’s another matter. And plenty of people will Google it. Q. When you were done, aside from the gratification of having written a book, were you surprised by any of the stories yourself since the book is so honest? A. Not really. It’s struck me as odd when people have said, like on the little Amazon blurb, “brutally honest.’’ It was like, eh that’s just some [malarkey] they put on every memoir. So when people say that to me it’s like, “Really? This is surprisingly honest to you?’’ Q. Yes, at one point you detail encounters with prostitutes, and at another you describe yourself as bitterly envious of Jeff Buckley and talk about doing drugs with him. Not everyone would’ve included those stories. A. I look at everything as, the best possible story is what should be served. I really want to go for that rather than (he adopts an up- per-crust accent) “ah, Jeff and I in our salad days in where we were great friends and we gallivanted and gamboled in the streets.’’ I’m looking for the interesting story in pretty much everything, even if I’m the stooge. I went through a Jonathan Ames period and he has a story called “I [Expletive] My Pants in the South of France,’’ and now I feel like this is tame in comparison. Q. In the book you talk about feeling stronger as a songwriter and lament the implosion of the business. Do you feel like if you had the spotlight on you now like you did 15 years ago it would make a difference financially? A. Well, yeah. I’ve got to tell you, I got the sales chart back from Newbury Comics the first week [Yes and Also Yes was out] and it devastated me. It was like “Oh my god, this thing is such a flop! It’s over, I’ve got to start looking at grad schools.’’ And then I looked at their overall chart and I beat Kanye West that week. So people aren’t buying records. (Laughs.) It is amazing how moribund the industry is. But when I was in Soul Coughing we would have two buses, a lighting crew, everybody had a tech, staying in amazing hotels and I’d get back and I couldn’t pay my rent. The moment I got out of Soul Coughing, my income basically doubled. Warner Brothers dropped me, I was out of Soul Coughing, I was in the humblest position possible, but [things improved] on the money-glory index. The money helped with the lack of glory. Q. And you get to play, making money for the thing you wish to do. A. Yeah, it’s hard to look at this life and think “it could be better,’’ because it really couldn’t be. - Reprinted from The Boston Globe “Mike Doughty returns with a new album and memoir - The singer-songwriter goes from Soul Coughing to soul-baring” by Sarah Rodman, November 11, 2011 Upcoming Projects... 1/9: Good Old War “Calling Me Names,” Ingrid Michaelson “Ghost,” My Pet Dragon “Moonshine”... 1/16: The Dunwells “I Could Be A King,” Ruthie Foster “Aim For The Heart”... 1/23: Mike Doughty “Strike The Motion,” The Kooks “How’d You Like That” Keep up with us at rightarmresource.com and facebook.com/rightarmresource RIGHT ARM RESOURCE WEEKLY UPDATE - 12/7/11
