Skipworths of ______

Introduction

Overview:

This chapter is one of a series tracing the descendants of Lincolnshire Skipworths from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth centuries. The project has involved extracting all instances of Skipworth and variants in indexes of baptisms, marriages and burials, census records, registrations of births, marriages and deaths, wills, and any other relevant indexes. The resulting facts have then been gradually fitted together like a jigsaw puzzle. Because of the relative rarity of the name, the completeness of census and registration coverage, and the rural communities in which they lived, there have been few instances where doubts about identification have arisen. However, it should be stressed that generally the original documents have not been consulted unless this is indicated in the text or source citations. The reader is advised to confirm details in which s/he has a particular interest from the source documents.

After much deliberation, I have come to the conclusion that all the Skipworth families of the / areas, were related as set out in the accompanying Overview Chart on page 6, although I accept that evidence is lacking on some points.

First, I considered the names given to sons. John, Thomas, Samuel, William and George were the supposed brothers in the first generation, and these names were heavily used among the descendants. Now and again an obscure name taken from the Old Testament cropped up, such as Jabez, Manasseh, Esias (Isaiah), Azubah. Samuel was also of this derivation one presumes. Because of the repeated use of a small selection of names I have applied nicknames relating to the places of their residence to distinguish them.

Compare this with the Skipworths of , around . Their landmark was the name Philip which occurred in every generation and all branches, but never once in the Spilsby group. Samuel, so common among the Spilsby Skipworths, is not found among those around Caistor, nor have they ever used the more obscure names from the Old Testament. There are also differences of status, which lead me to the conclusion that the two groups have had separate origins.

To make the point: the number of males, of all surnames, listed in the 1851 census as born in Lincolnshire between 1760 and 1780 and were as follows: 700 Johns, 700 Williams, 650 Thomases, 300 Georges, 150 Samuels, 7 Philips. Of the two rarer names in this list, one is used by Skipworths only among the Spilsby/Horncastle group, the other only in the Caistor Skipworths.

There are no other nineteenth century Skipworth groups originating elsewhere in Britain, which points inevitably to the conclusion that these two have both derived their names from the aristocratic family of Skipwiths, which had their principal seat at up till the seventeenth century. They in turn had taken their name from the lands of Skipwith, a manor just south east of York, which they acquired by the marriage of an ancestor to a Saxon heiress in the twelfth century. Further information on their history can be found in various editions of Burke’s Peerage, and in the book "A Brief Account of the Skipwiths ….. " compiled by Fulwar Skipwith, 1867, available in the Society of Genealogists library, . The meaning of Skipwith is given as “sheep farm” in surname dictionaries.

It is impossible to be sure how the Skipworth families came to acquire their surname, but it was almost certainly derived from the Lord of their Manor. When the manors held by the South Ormsby Skipwiths in the seventeenth century are plotted on a map, there is a remarkable co- incidence with the villages where the forebears of the Caistor Skipworths appear in the 1600s.

No trace of the Spilsby/Horncastle Skipworths has been found earlier than about 1750. By that time the South Ormsby family had disappeared, but an offshoot had returned to Lincolnshire in the form of the Baronets Skipwith of , near Horncastle. It is possible that the origin of these Skipworths is later, derived from the Metheringham Skipwiths, rather than directly from South Ormsby.

Skipworths of Friskney ______

The spelling of the name is not particularly significant. Skipwith is the earlier and more “correct” spelling. But even in the Baronets’ families the Skipworth form appears and has apparently been allowed to stand unchallenged. An example is Skipworth Street in Leicester, which almost certainly honours a prominent Skipwith family that lived close by, though Skipworth Street in London derives from the Skipworths. By the nineteenth century the aristocratic Skipwiths and the lower born Skipworths could mostly be distinguished by spelling, give or take a few errors.

Setting aside for now the North Lincolnshire Skipworths, we turn to evidence that there is but one surviving extended family around Spilsby/ Horncastle.

Thomas SKIPWORTH married Alice EVISON on 16 Apr 1748 at .1 The supposed children of Thomas and Alice were i. John SKIPWORTH of 1745-1824, bapt son of Thomas and Alice, married (1) Sarah SYLVESTER, (2) Ann TURNER, (3) Ann WHARFE ii. Thomas SKIPWORTH of c1750-after 1794, no known baptism hence no proof of parents, married Hannah JOHNSON [subject of the present chapter] iii. Samuel SKIPWORTH of Halton Holegate 1752-1834, no known baptism hence no proof of parents, married Rebecca SYLVESTER iv. William SKIPWORTH of Little Steeping 1757-1815, no known baptism hence no proof of parents, married Jane BRIGGS v. Ann SKIPWORTH 1759- , bapt Irby in the Marsh daughter of Thomas and Alice, nothing further known vi. George SKIPWORTH 1761- , bapt Irby in the Marsh son of Thomas and Alice, nothing further known

What evidence is there that John, Thomas, Samuel, William and George were all brothers?

(a) John: • He was baptised in 1745 at Bratoft, parents Thomas and Alice. The problem here is that the marriage of Thomas to Alice EVISON did not occur until 1748, in the adjacent parish of Irby. Before dismissing Alice EVISON as John’s possible mother we should note that a similar situation arose in the case of John’s first granddaughter Elizabeth, who was born in 1799 before her parents’ marriage in 1800. Elizabeth was included with her siblings in the family bible, though she probably died in infancy. • In 1773 John was resident at Irby, where Thomas and Alice had baptised children, when he applied for a settlement certificate permitting him to move to Halton Holegate, his new wife’s parish. • John has a link to his supposed brother William through William’s son Henry emigrating to Australia on the same ship that carried John’s grandson Augustus Frederick and family. • John’s three marriages were variously witnessed by Thomas Skipworth, William Skipworth and Samuel Skipworth, his supposed brothers.

(b) Thomas: • Could the Thomas Skipworth who witnessed John’s marriage to Sarah Silvester have been John’s father and not his brother? Unfortunately we have no date of death for the father, but he would have been well into his fifties by that time, and the choice of a younger man seems more likely. • We have no baptismal record for Thomas and he did not survive into the census period to state a birthplace, so there is no evidence from that quarter. • Thomas had three sons, George, William and Thomas. George did not produce a Samuel among his sons, but William did, so there is some weak support from the naming evidence.

(c) Samuel: • He settled at Halton Holegate and he married a Sylvester, both of which he had in common with his supposed brother John. • We have no baptismal record for Samuel and he did not survive into the census period to state a birthplace, so there is no evidence from that quarter.

______- 3 - Compiled by Mary Skipworth 10 June 2012

Skipworths of Friskney ______

(d) William: • As explained above there is evidence linking him to John through their descendants’ emigration. • We have no baptismal record for William and he did not survive into the census period to state a birthplace, so there is no evidence from that quarter. • He had a son and a grandson called Samuel.

(e) George: • We have the baptism of George, son of Thomas and Alice, at Irby in the Marsh in 1761. This was 16 years after the marriage, not quite long enough for George to be a grandson, but useful in establishing that Alice’s fertility continued (they also baptised a daughter in 1759). It is unlikely that there was a 14 year gap in the family, supporting the idea that the sons Thomas, Samuel and William, whose baptisms are missing, do indeed belong here. • It is unfortunate that this son, George, whose baptism is known, is the one with no other trace. Presumably he died in childhood.

I shall leave to the individual chapters any necessary discussion regarding proof that the various grandsons of Thomas and Alice are correctly placed.

Friskney Skipworths:

Throughout the 19th century, this group of families, descended from Thomas Skipworth and Hannah Johnson of Little Steeping, have generally remained quite close to their point of origin, and they are still represented there in the early 21st century. It seems that the industrial revolution virtually passed most of them by. Most of the villages mentioned can be found on a map 30 kilometres across. The few who did move away were likely to move some distance, attracted by opportunities on the railways and by emigration to America. A map of their area appears on the following page.

To guide the reader through the first four generations a chart is included on page 7 showing Thomas and Hannah with 4 children, 9 grandchildren, and 33 great grandchildren. Only male line descendants have been included, the full numbers would be much greater.

Apparent inconsistencies have arisen in these and other Skipworth families through individuals changing the way their names are expressed. The order of Christian names may have been reversed, or a second Christian name added, or adopted as the sole name.

There are also apparent inconsistencies in the places of birth as stated in the census returns, particularly when a young person had left home. Either the person filling in the census return was not accurately informed, or the person remembered the place they grew up, not their place of birth.

Transcription errors have crept in, both in compiling the original returns, and in the production of modern indexes. However, unless otherwise indicated in the notes, I am reasonably confident of the identifications because of the relative rarity of the surname and the completeness of the census coverage.

Where the occupation is given as servant this means a live-in employee. It could be a domestic servant in the modern sense, but it could also be a labourer or a trade employee. The original census image will often clarify ambiguous cases.

I acknowledge with thanks contributions made by various family members. I would be pleased to be notified of any errors or additions.

First Generation

1. Thomas SKIPWORTH of Little Steeping was born around 1750, probably son of Thomas SKIPWORTH and Alice EVISON of Irby in the Marsh, Lincolnshire, and died after 1813.

No christening record has been found for this Thomas. His birth date and his parents are the subject of speculation as discussed in the introduction.

He is thought to be the Thomas Skipworth who witnessed the marriage in 1787 of John SKIPWORTH of Halton Holegate and Ann WHARFE, and also the witness at his son George's marriage in 1794. He was cited in 1813, as Thomas SKIPWORTH the elder of Little Steeping, weaver, bondsman for his son Thomas’ bastard child.105

Thomas married Hannah JOHNSON on 18 Nov 1771 in Little Steeping. Both parties marked instead of signing the register, the witnesses were not family members.136

1901: age 2, born Friskney, nurse child at Wainfleet in the home of John and Ada WHITING.

The term nurse child was used for children fostered when their mothers had died or were unable to feed them, but sometimes they remained permanently with the foster parents. The foster mother was a granddaughter of Mary TOYNE nee SKIPWORTH (no 7 in this file) by her son Brader, and thus a second cousin of Amy’s.103 It appears that John and Ada WHITING, who married in 1896, were childless in 1898, and this may have been the reason for choosing them as foster parents for Amy.
