A one-man show of about I30 prime paintings, mostly November k from the past two decades. Tobey (b.1890) first won general recognition after World War II, and was the first American painter since Whistler to be awarded an International Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale (1958) ana* the first living American to be given an exhibition at the Louvre in Paris (I96I). The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive monograph on the artist's work by William Seitz, Associate Curator, Painting and Sculpture Exhibitions who is also directing the show. -

The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance
Gordon 1 Jessica Gordon 29 March 2010 Honors Thesis Everything was Beautiful at the Ballet: The Evolution of Musical Theatre Dance During the mid-1860s, a ballet troupe from Paris was brought to the Academy of Music in lower Manhattan. Before the company’s first performance, however, the theatre in which they were to dance was destroyed in a fire. Nearby, producer William Wheatley was preparing to begin performances of The Black Crook, a melodrama with music by Charles M. Barras. Seeing an opportunity, Wheatley conceived the idea to combine his play and the displaced dance company, mixing drama and spectacle on one stage. On September 12, 1866, The Black Crook opened at Niblo’s Gardens and was an immediate sensation. Wheatley had unknowingly created a new American art form that would become a tradition for years to come. Since the first performance of The Black Crook, dance has played an important role in musical theatre. From the dream ballet in Oklahoma to the “Dance at the Gym” in West Side Story to modern shows such as Movin’ Out, dance has helped tell stories and engage audiences throughout musical theatre history. Dance has not always been as integrated in musicals as it tends to be today. I plan to examine the moments in history during which the role of dance on the Broadway stage changed and how those changes affected the manner in which dance is used on stage today. Additionally, I will discuss the important choreographers who have helped develop the musical theatre dance styles and traditions. As previously mentioned, theatrical dance in America began with the integration of European classical ballet and American melodrama. -

Even if its members look back and suffer anxious regret at their choice of How Green Was My Valley , that doesn ' t mean they were wrong. They can ' t be wrong . It ' s not everyone else ' s opinion that matters, but the Academy ' s. Mulling over the movies of 1941, the Acade my rejected Citizen Kane . Perhaps they resented Orson Welles ' s arrogant ways and unprecedented creative power. Maybe they thought the film too experimental. Maybe the vote was split between Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon , both pioneering in their F ilm Noir flavor. Or they may not have seen the film at all since it was granted such limited release as a result of newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst ' s threats to RKO. Nobody knows, and it doesn ' t matter. Academy members can ' t be forced to vote for the film they like best. Their biases and political calculations can ' t be dissected. To subject the Academy to such scrutiny would be impossible and unfair. It ' s the Academy ' s awards, not ours. -

Dressing the Dancer: Identity and Belly Dance Students A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA BY Margaret Anne Deppe IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Joanne Eicher, Elizabeth Bye May 2010 © Margaret Anne Deppe 2010 1 Abstract Dressing the Dancer: Identity and Belly Dance Students Dress is a primary tool in the public presentation of the self (Stone, 1962). Clothing, grooming, and the physical appearance of the dressed body contribute to self image in both professional and recreational settings. Attending belly dance classes is a popular leisure activity among American women, and for many, dress accouterments are a significant part of the class experience. Dressing of the self for recreational events gives individuals the opportunity to express alternate aspects of the self not typically evident in other social settings and provides an opportunity for female socialization. The appearance of vendors selling specialized dancewear for classes, seminars, and workshops suggests that dress plays a significant role for students at all levels of belly dance activity, not just among those who perform professionally. This study examines the types of dress worn for belly dance classes and the motivations for dress choices made by students learning to belly dance from professional instructors in dance classes, seminars, and workshops. The study will further investigate how dress contributes to the expression of identity in the belly dance class context. The methods used for this study are participant observation at locations and events where belly dance classes, workshops, and seminars are held as well as half-hour interviews with students attending those events.
