2006 COLORADO Football: GAME 4 — GEORGIA Saturday, September 23 at Athens (12:30 p.m. MDT; Lincoln Financial Sports/Regional) RELEASE NUMBER 4 (September 18, 2006)
QUICKLY SPEAKING…
The Colorado Buffaloes (0-3, 0-0 Big 12) make their first regular season road trip to a Southeastern Conference school since 1980 as they travel to the Peach State to take on the No. 9 (AP)/7 (USAT/Coaches) Georgia Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0 SEC) this Saturday, September 23, in a 10:30 a.m. kickoff at Sanford Stadium… The game will be televised as part of the SEC syndicated package produced by Lincoln Financial Sports, with Dave Neal (play-by-play), Dave Rowe (analyst) and Dave Baker (sidelines) behind the mikes… CU’s last game at an SEC school was on Sept. 20, 1980 at Louisiana State; in fact, CU’s four games at Baton Rouge (1971, 1973, 1974 and 1980) are the only ones the Buffs have ever played in an SEC venue… CU’s live buffalo mascot, Ralphie IV, will make a rare regular season trip and will travel to Georgia; she will leave on Wednesday and will be accompanied by an ESPN producer and cameraman as her trip will be documented on Game Day Saturday morning… This is the first-ever meeting between the Buffs and Bulldogs, as UGA is the fifth SEC team the Buffaloes will have ever played; CU has the 16th best record in college football since the start of 1989, while Georgia has the 14th… CU is coming off a 21-3 loss to Arizona State in Boulder, its seventh straight loss (the last four of ’05 and first three this season); it is Colorado’s first seven-game losing streak since beginning 0-7 in 1980… The Buffs have not dropped eight straight since Eddie Crowder’s first two CU teams endured a 10-game skid over the1963-64 seasons... CU’s website, www.CUBuffs.com features game day updates and live stats for all games. DEPTH CHART ON PAGE 41; ROSTER ON PAGES 42-43
STAT OF THE WEEK
TB Hugh Charles rushed for 109 yards on 20 carries in the loss to Arizona State, becoming the 48th player in Colorado history to have rushed for 1,000 or more yards in a career (ending the game with 1,045). Preliminary research indicates that the Buffs are one of the all-time leaders in the number of players who have rushed for 1,000-plus yards for a career. Oklahoma currently tops the list with 64, followed by Nebraska (54), USC (54), Colorado (48), Texas (43), West Virginia (39), Iowa (36), Penn State (35), South Carolina (35) and Air Force (33), Miami, Fla. (33) and Virginia (33).
PLACEKICKER SHOWDOWN
Two potential, if not probable, finalists for the Lou Groza Award will square off this Saturday in Athens. Colorado senior Mason Crosby and Georgia junior Brandon Coutu (ca-too) will try to get a “leg” up on each other as the season reaches the one-third point. Crosby was a finalist last year and Coutu a semifinalist (many thought he should have joined Crosby in Orlando); the pair tied for the longest field goal in college football last year (58 yards). Crosby is 3-of-6 on field goals and 2-of-2 on PAT kicks to date this year (11 points), while Coutu has made all seven of his field goals and is 11-of-11 on PAT tries for 32 points. A comparison between the two in 2005:

OBSCURE NOTE OF THE WEEK
Colorado has dropped 10 straight games against ranked opponents, and gets another chance this week to end the streak with No. 9 Georgia on the docket.
