9 PROGRAM NOTES—Continued Rubinstein was fifteen, his reputation had spread throughout Europe and he had earned the praise of Saint-Saëns, Pader ewski and Max Bruch. In 1906, he paid his first visit to America where he gave 75 concerts in three months. Rubinstein returned to Europe to begin his global peregrinations, which have since covered more than two million miles and have taken him to every country in the world except Tibet. Upon the outbreak of World War I, he tried to join the Polish legion but his knowledge of eight languages made him more valuable as an interpreter. He was so shocked by the brutalities of the German army that he swore never again to play in that country. He has kept that vow for 34 years. In 1946, the most international of all living artists, Rubinstein became a U. S. citizen. He is prouder of the simple document that officially makes him an American than any of the many decorations and citations he has received from uni versities and governments. Wherever Rubinstein plays, his concerts evoke unparalleled demonstrations. His appearances in Paris have set an all-

11 PROGRAM NOTES—Continued time record. In Rome, box-office lines have formed at four o’clock in the morning the day tickets were put on sale. In Dallas, he topped all attendance figures when he played with the Dallas Symphony.

Rubinstein, whose name has become familiar to movie audiences, will be seen on the screen this season in a new film, “Of Men and Music.”

The film was produced by World Artists, a new organization in which Rubinstein shares an interest with some of the most important names in music along with Impresario S. Hurok. In addition to the pianist, the film stars Nadine Conner and Jan Peerce, Jascha Heifetz and and the Symphony. Rubinstein is deeply interested in this project because he feels it presents an opportunity to bring good music into neighborhood movie houses in an authentic setting which portrays a side of the artist the public never has an opportunity to see.

“Perhaps you remember one of the movies I appeared in,” Rubinstein recalled in an interview here recently. “It was ‘Carnegie Hall,’ produced by Boris Morros. Boris came to me and showed me the list of artists who would be in the picture. Everybody was included. And he said to me. ‘But we must have you. Such a picture without Rubinstein is unthinkable. You will be the jewel in the crown.’ I listened and then I said to him, Boris, I know what will happen—you will get all of us into this movie, and then you will have as the star . . . Harry James!”

14 PROGRAM NOTES—Continued Bores’ eyes popped open. “How could you know? We have only this minute signed Harry James. But don't worry, he appears only at the end for three minutes.” “And now perhaps you understand why this time, when we can just make music without interrupting Chopin for a love scene; without cowboys or Indians, I am happy.” In recent years, Rubinstein has been seen in two films and has recorded the sound track for two more. “The ordeal of sitting under hot lights,” he declared, “facing the cold eyes of impersonal cameras is difficult. And the lines I must speak I find more frightening than a Carnegie Hall concert. I prefer to record all day than be photographed for an hour.” Despite Rubinstein’s aversion for the lens, the complexities of picture-making fascinate him. When he began work in Hollywood, the master pianist would return day after day to watch the progress of the film. During rest periods, he enter tained the cast and technicians on the set with thousands of dollars worth of superb music—free. Hollywood regards him now as a “regular fellow,” a real trouper. It was not always so. Having scheduled to begin recording his first film, “I’ve Always Loved You,” Republic’s officials were a little dubious about how to treat the famous artist. When Rubinstein entered, peeled off his coat, rolled up his sleeves and said, “All right — let’s start playing some music,” they relaxed. He became a favorite from the stars down.
