Darwin, August 2003 Cover photo: Tall forests dominated by Darwin stringybark Eucalyptus tetrodonta, Darwin woollybutt E. miniata and Melville Island Bloodwood Corymbia nesophila are the principal landscape element across the Tiwi islands (photo: Craig Hempel). i SUMMARY The Tiwi Islands comprise two of Australia’s largest offshore islands - Bathurst (with an area of 1693 km 2) and Melville (5788 km 2) Islands. These are Aboriginal lands lying about 20 km to the north of Darwin, Northern Territory. The islands are of generally low relief with relatively simple geological patterning. They have the highest rainfall in the Northern Territory (to about 2000 mm annual average rainfall in the far north-west of Melville and north of Bathurst). The human population of about 2000 people lives mainly in the three towns of Nguiu, Milakapati and Pirlangimpi. Tall forests dominated by Eucalyptus miniata, E. tetrodonta, and Corymbia nesophila cover about 75% of the island area. These include the best developed eucalypt forests in the Northern Territory. The Tiwi Islands also include nearly 1300 rainforest patches, with floristic composition in many of these patches distinct from that of the Northern Territory mainland. Although the total extent of rainforest on the Tiwi Islands is small (around 160 km 2 ), at an NT level this makes up an unusually high proportion of the landscape and comprises between 6 and 15% of the total NT rainforest extent. The Tiwi Islands also include nearly 200 km 2 of “treeless plains”, a vegetation type largely restricted to these islands. -

E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The discovery of new vertebrate species in developed countries is still occurring at surprising rates for some taxonomic groups, especially the amphibians and reptiles. While this most often occurs in under-explored areas, it occasionally still happens in well-inhabited regions. We report such a case with the discovery and description of U. mahonyi sp. nov., a new species of frog from a highly populated region of New South Wales, Australia. We provide details of its morphology, calls, embryos and tadpoles, and phylogenetic relationships to other species of eastern Uperoleia. We also provide the results of targeted surveys to establish its distribution and provide observations of its habitat associations. As a consequence of these surveys, we comment on the likely restricted nature of the species’ distribution and habitat, and place this in the context of a preliminary assessment of its putative conservation status, which should be assessed for listing under the IUCN’s red list. -

Here we review the system- atics and diversity of the predominantly saxicoline Australian marbled velvet geckos (genus Oedura) in the Australian arid and semi-arid zones using newly-gathered morphological data and previously published genetic data. Earlier work showed that four largely allopatric and genetically divergent lineages are present: Western (Pilbara and Gascoyne regions), Gulf (west and south of the Gulf of Carpentaria), Central (central ranges) and Eastern (Cooper and Darling Basins). None of these four populations are conspecific with true O. marmorata, a seperate species complex that is restricted to the Top End region of the Northern Territory. -

Biota (n): The living creatures of an area; the flora and fauna together 21 August 2012 Peter Royce Principal Advisor - Environmental Approvals Approvals Division Rio Tinto Central Park 152-158 St George’s Terrace Perth WA 6000 (via email) Dear Peter Brockman 4 Camps Vegetation and Flora Survey Biota Environmental Sciences (Biota) was commissioned by Rio Tinto Pty Ltd (Rio Tinto) to conduct a vegetation and flora survey for the Brockman Camps area (hereafter referred to as the “study area”), located east of the operational BS4 mine and immediately adjacent to the existing accommodation village. This brief report presents the results obtained during that field work. Scope and Objectives The potential development site (defined by the boundaries of the study area) around the Brockman Camps extends over an area of 180 ha, of which 53 ha has been cleared or is deemed as extensively disturbed. Prior to this clearing, a survey conducted by Biota in early December 2006 and late January 2007 recorded no flora of conservation significance in this area (Biota 2007). Vegetation over about 30 ha of the remaining area was previously mapped as part of the Brockman Syncline 4 (BS4) project (Biota 2006). The botanical field survey was therefore conducted over the remaining 97 ha of the study area (adjoining the previously surveyed BS4 study area). This survey was undertaken in accordance with the Guidance Statement No. 51 "Terrestrial Flora and Vegetation Surveys for Environmental Impact Assessment in Western Australia" (EPA 2004).
