University ofVirginia The distinctionsmade betweenthe Mahayana and the Hinayana,how- ever,force the schoolsinto neat, isolated, and independentcategories thatoften undermine the complexities that exist concerning their beliefs, ideologies,and practices. Whilesome of the categories used to differentiatetheMahayana and the Hinayanaare helpfulin the studyand interpretationof Buddhism, thesedistinctions must continually be reviewed.This article attempts to reviewone such distinction:the commonly held theoretical model that postulatesthat the goal ofMahayana practitioners is to becomebuddhas byfollowing the path of the bodhisattva (bodhisattva-yana), whereas the goal of HTnayanapractitioners is to become arahantsby followingthe pathof the Heareror the Buddha'sdisciples (riavaka-yina). In demon- stratingthe oversimplificationsinherent in thismodel, this article will investigatethe presence and scope ofthe bodhisattva ideal inTheravada Buddhisttheory and practice. By raisingissues surrounding the Mahdyana-Hinayanaopposition, however,I am not suggestingthat distinctions cannot be made be- tweenthe two vehicles, nor am I proposingto do away withthe terms "Mahayana"and "Hinayana."Rather, in exploringthe oversimplifica- tionsinherent in theMahayana-HTnayana dichotomy, it is myintention to replacethe theoretical model that identifies (1) MahayanaBuddhism withthe bodhisattva-yana and (2) HTnayanaBuddhism with the sravaka- yina witha modelthat is morerepresentative of the two vehicles.In doingso, theimplied purpose of this article, as is JohnHolt's study of the place and relevanceof Avalokiteivara in SriLanka, is to "raisequestions among studentsof Buddhismregarding the veryutility of the terms Mahayana ... and Theravada as designatingwholly distinctivereligio- historicalconstructs"' (emphasis added). Hawai'i Press 399 This content downloaded from 161.6.141.175 on Fri, 12 Feb 2016 16:04:33 UTC All use subject to JSTOR Terms and Conditions One ofthe first Mahayana Buddhists who identifiesthe bodhisattva- yina withMahayana Buddhism and the sravaka-yinawith HTnayana Buddhismis Nagarjuna.In his PreciousGarland of Advice for the King (Rijaparikatha-ratnamilTh),Nagarjuna rhetorically asks "Since all the aspirations,deeds and dedicationsof Bodhisattvas were not explained in theHearers' vehicle, how then could one becomea Bodhisattvathrough itspath?"2 In anotherinstance, Nagdrjuna writes that "[In theVehicle of the Hearers]Buddha did notexplain the bases fora Bodhisattva'sen- lightenment."3While Nagarjunacompares the sravaka-yinawith the bodhisattva-yanain thesefirst two passages,he laterstates that "the subjectsbased on the deeds of Bodhisattvaswere not mentionedin the [HTnayanalsatras."4 Nagarjuna's third passage, then, suggests that subjectsconcerning bodhisattvas are foundonly in Mahayanatexts and are absentfrom all Hinayanatexts. AnotherMahayana Buddhist to upholda Mah5ydna-Hinaydnadis- tinctionbased on a bodhisattva-srivakaopposition is Asaiga. As Richard S. Cohen illustrates,5sAsahiga posits, in his Mahjyinasotralamkinra,that theGreat Vehicle and theHearers' Vehicle are mutuallyopposed.6 Their contradictorynature includes intention, teaching, employment (i.e., means),support (which is based entirelyon meritand knowledge),and the timethat it takesto reach the goal.7 AfterAsahiga discusses the opposingnature of thesetwo vehicles,he thenidentifies the sravaka- yina as thelesser vehicle (Hinayana), and remarksthat the lesser vehicle (ydnamhTnam) is notable to be thegreat vehicle (Mahayana).8 CandrakTrtiis yet another Mahayana thinker who viewsthe Maha- yana and the HTnayanaas beingmutually opposed. Like Asariga, Can- drakirtiuses the bodhisattva-gravakadistinction to separateMahayana and HinayanaBuddhism as well as to promotethe Mahayana tradition over and againstHTnayana Buddhism. In his Madhyamakivatira,for instance,he remarksthat the lesservehicle (HTnayana)is the path reservedsolely for disciples and solitarybuddhas, and thatthe greater vehicle (Mahayana)is the path reservedsolely for bodhisattvas. Not only does CandrakTrtiassociate the bodhisattva-yinawith Mahayana Buddhism,he also clingsto thebelief that the Hinayanaschools know nothingof the "stagesof the careerof the futureBuddha, the perfect virtues(paramiti), the resolutionsor vows to save all creatures,the applicationof merit to theacquisition of the quality of Buddha, [and] the greatcompassion."' In otherwords, for CandrakTrti (as forNagarjuna), theHinayana tradition does notpresent a bodhisattvadoctrine. The pointsraised by these Mahayana Buddhists are problematicfor threereasons. First,the dichotomypresented by both Asanga and Can- drakirtisets up an oppositionbetween an ideology and an institutional affiliation.Rather than comparingan ideologywith an ideology (bodhi- PhilosophyEast &.West sattvaand drivaka)or a Buddhistschool withanother Buddhist school, 400 This content downloaded from 161.6.141.175 on Fri, 12 Feb 2016 16:04:33 UTC All use subject to JSTOR Terms and Conditions thisopposition contrasts one ideology(arahantship through following the sravaka-ydna)with an institutionalaffiliation (Mahayana Buddhism). In orderfor a moreaccurate distinction to be constructed,then, we must eithercompare the bodhisattva-yana with the sravaka-yina, or compare a MahayanaBuddhist school with a HTnayanaBuddhist school. Anotherproblem with the ideas put forthby Nagarjuna,Asanhga, and CandrakTrticoncerns their statements that Mahayana and HTnayana Buddhismare mutuallycontradictory and exclusive.These assertions underminethe fact that the terms "HTnayana" and "Mahayana"refer to numerousschools and thatthe categoryof "Hinayana"includes even a numberof "proto-Mahayana"schools (e.g., the Mahasafrghikas).10 By usingthe terms "Mahayana" and "HTnayana"monolithically, these thinkersignore the plurality of doctrines, goals, and pathsthat are pres- entin the schools. The thirdproblem inherent in the statementsof thesewriters, and whichwill be thefocus of thisarticle, is thatthey assume that all fol- lowersof the Hinayanaare sravakasstriving to becomearahants while all followersof theMahayana are bodhisattvason thepath to buddha- hood.As we shallsee throughthe example of the only extant HTnayana school,the Theravadin tradition, this is clearlynot the case. Beforereevaluating the bodhisattva-sravaka opposition as it is pre- sentedby Nagarjuna,Asafiga, and CandrakTrti,it is firstnecessary to ascertainthe presence and scope ofthe bodhisattva ideal in Theravada Buddhism.This will be accomplishedby lookingat thepresence of the ideal in theTheravada Buddhist Pali canon (theory)as well as by inves- tigatinghow thesame ideal permeatesthe lives of Theravada Buddhists (practice). The presenceof the bodhisattva ideal inthe Theravada Buddhist Pali canon is primarilyrestricted to GotamaBuddha. The use of the term "bodhisattva"occurs in a numberof the sottas (Skt: satra) in the Majjhi- ma, Anguttara,and SamyuttaNikJyas where the Buddhais purported to havesaid: "Monks, before my Awakening, and whileI was yetmerely the Bodhisatta[Skt: bodhisattva], not fully-awakened...."" In addition to referringto the present life of Gotama,the term "bodhisattva" is also used in relationto thepenultimate life of Gotamain Tusita (Pali: Tusita) heaven,as well as hisconception and birth.12 In latercanonical texts, the bodhisattvaideal is furtherdeveloped and associatedwith numerous concepts. These developments(which includethe concept of a bodhisattvavow) may be saidto introduce"into TheravadaBuddhism what in Mahayanastudies has been called 'the Bodhisattvaideal.'

The eight spokes of the wheel represent the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism, the most important Way of Practice. And Rāhula was the name given later to the babe by Siddhattha’s father, the Rāja Suddhodana. These were indeed unusual words with which to welcome a first-born; but we shall understand them better when we set them against the background of another experience encountered by Siddhattha on that memorable day. We are told that it was on this very day that Siddhattha met on his way, the serene figure of an ascetic—or, as some would have it, saw a vision of it. This encounter showed him a way of life that could help him to find, for himself and mankind, the deliverance from the inflictions of old age, sickness and death which had made such a strong impact on him when he had grasped their full significance not long before during earlier outings.

Introduction Buddhism is named after the title given to its founder, Siddhatta Gautama – the Buddha. He was born in Kapilavastu in Northern India in about 563 BCE and died at the age of 80 in about 483 BCE. The exact dates are unknown, but perhaps all we need to know is that he lived for about eighty years sometime between the sixth and eighth centuries BCE. The religion of Buddhism was spread from India to Sri Lanka and Thailand by its early followers. The form of Buddhism which exists in these countries today is known as Theravada (the Teachings of the Elders) and resembles the earliest forms of the religion. Buddhism itself died out in India for many centuries, although it has now regained popularity with some groups in India. When Theravada Buddhism was taken into Northern Asia it underwent many adaptations, as it tried to make itself relevant to the people living in these areas. Buddhism spread into China, Vietnam, Korea, Japan, Mongolia, Bhutan and Tibet. Today this Buddhism is referred to as Mahayana (the Greater Vehicle) and contains many different branches or schools, including Pure Land, Nichiren Shosu, Yoga Cara, Zen Tendai and Tibetan. This last school is sometimes considered to be a different form of Buddhism in its own right and is called Vajrayana.

Among the bhiksus, the fully ordained male monastics, over two hundred and fifty became “arhats,” practitioners who attained enlightenment and achieved liberation. Among the arhats, there are two groups that have become par- ticularly well known: the “ten great disciples” and the “eighteen arhats.” While the identities of the ten great disciples are set in stone, the composition of the “eighteen arhats” varies according to the preferences of indi- vidual Buddhists. Today, at the Buddha Memorial Center in Taiwan, there stands a set of statues that comprise a brand new set of “eighteen arhats.” This set consists of the Buddha’s ten great disciples, five other well-known arhats (including the classical dragon subduing arhat and tiger taming arhat), and three enlightened bhiksunis, fully ordained female monastics.

At one time Shakyamuni was at the Jetavana garden in Shravasti.2 As many as twelve hundred and fifty people assembled, and they were especially eminent monks. They were all illustrious practitioners known as arhats who had eliminated their delusions and were of great renown.3 Among them, the elders Shariputra, Mahamaudgalyayana, Mahakashyapa, Mahakatyayana, Mahakausthila, Revata, Suddhipanthaka, Nanda, Ananda, Rahula, Gavampati, Pindola Bharadvaja, Kalodayin, Mahakapphina, Vakkula, and Aniruddha, were outstanding disciples.4 There was also a vast number of bodhisattvas; the most excellent among them were the Dharma Prince Manjushri, the Bodhisattva Ajita, the Bodhisattva Gandhahastin, and the Bodhisattva Nityodyukta.5 In addition, innumerable celestial deities such as Indra had gathered.6 Then the Buddha Shakyamuni explained to the elder Shariputra: “To the far west of this world (of delusion), beyond as many as ten trillion buddha-worlds, there’s another world called Ultimate Bliss with a buddha whose name is Amitabha, who is there even now teaching the Dharma.7 Shariputra, do you know why that buddha-world is called Ultimate Bliss? It is because the people who live there never experience suffering; they are mantled in multitude forms of happiness.

    ISSN 1076-9005 Volume 2 1995 "Cutting the Roots of Virtue:" Tsongkhapa on the Results of Anger By Daniel Cozort Assistant Professor of Religion, Dickinson College Abstract: Anger is the most powerful of the kle"sas that not only "plant seeds" for suffering but also "cut the roots of virtue" for periods of up to a thousand aeons per instance. This article examines and assesses the exegesis by Tsongkhapa, founder of the Tibetan Gelukba order, of Indian sources on the topic of anger. It argues that despite Tsongkhapa's many careful qualifications he may not be successful in avoiding the conclusion that if the sūtras are to be accepted literally, there almost certainly will be persons for whom liberation from saṃsāra is precluded. INTRODUCTION Among the six root afflictive emotions (nyon mongs, kle"sa) identified in the Buddhist Abhidharma literature as the causes for episodes or entire lifetimes of suffering, anger (Tibetan: khong khro, Sanskrit: pratigha) holds a singular place. It is one of a few mental states[1] that not only establish "seeds" or "roots" of nonvirtue, but also nullify the seeds or roots of individual virtue planted by exemplary actions such as giving and patience. Among these states, anger is uniquely destructive. The Mañju"srīvikrīḍita Sūtra warns that a single moment of anger can result in a person's loss of a hundred aeons of virtue.[2] "Sāntideva, the ninth century author of the greatly influential Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra multiplies this dire warning tenfold (chapter 6, verse 1): anger wipes out not just a hundred, but a thousand aeons of virtue.

The author provides a case study examining how Buddhist leaders engage in cultural preservation and community building in the American South. Fusing ideas of Engaged Buddhism and community building, the author will demonstrate how a Buddhist monk is able to navigate the broader American culture and assist Vietnamese immigrants and refugees to acculturate, while maintaining their own cultural heritage, beliefs and religious traditions; ultimately building a viable and sustainable Buddhist community that contributes greatly to its new host community. Introduction A few days after taking a group of students from my community building class to visit the Vietnamese Buddhist temple, Chùa An Lạc, we were sitting together in the classroom reflecting on the experience. These were very bright students, attending a private liberal arts college1. Most were white and privileged, and were steeped in our attempts to teach about diversity and pluralism. One of the students raised her hand and posed the question, “does the temple have anything in its mission statement about social justice?” I love teaching and do enjoy the conversations I have with students in the classroom, but I am sometimes stunned by their questions and comments.

    BUDDHISM AND THE SOCIAL ORDER AN/RE 263 Bates College, Winter Semester 2011, MW 2:40-4:00 OFFICE HOURS: MTW 11-12, 161 PETTINGILL, 786-6083 FINAL: 1:15-3:15pm, Wednesday, 13 April BUDDHISM AND THE SOCIAL ORDER approaches the religion that has developed around what the Buddha taught as both a set of teachings about human being and moral behavior and as a social and political formation. The course divides into three parts, the first concerned with Buddhism as it developed in its original civilizational context and the second with Buddhism as a teaching. In the third part of the course, I will move on to the way Theravada Buddhists practice their religion nowadays, emphasizing the rise of Buddhist modernity in Thailand and Sri Lanka. The Buddha’s life provides a focus for the first two parts of the course. In the third part of the course attention moves first to the traditional way Buddhist texts have thought about the social order and on to the forces laywomen and men have exerted on Buddhist practice. Any religious doctrine comes to be domesticated as clerics, kings, and householders adapt it to the exigencies of the world they inhabit. Because Buddhism is an austere and ascetic religion, the Buddhist case offers a powerful example of the way religions get pulled into this world. By focusing on Theravada Buddhism—“the way of the elders”—this course follows out the domestication of Buddhism in early India, Sri Lanka and Thailand. But the worldly forces which have shaped Buddhism are not exclusively Asian.
