After listening to your feedback, you’ll see some days out that you’ve requested. The Bombay Sapphire gin distillery, trips to Lavenham and Knebworth House, the Romney, Hythe and Dymchurch Railway and the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. Once again, we are also championing the delights of our own county with trips to the Distillery, the Cinque Ports with Chris Goode and our very own county show at Showground.

Moules-frites or moules et frites is a dish of Mussels and Chips often served with mayonnaise, the dish is now considered the ‘National Dish’. Although Moules-frites are popular in many countries, it is thought that the dish originated in Belgium. It is likely that it was originally created by combining a popular and cheap food eaten around the coast and fried potatoes which were commonly eaten around the country in winter when no fish or other food was available. The Moules are often served ‘Marinière’ (White Wine, Shallots, Parsley & Butter) but there are many varients that can all be recommended such as Natural (Celery, Leeks & Butter); à la bière (Bruges Beer); à la crème (Cream, White Wine & Butter).... all not to be missed!

Cromer crabs are ‘brown crabs’ that are often found in the North Sea and North Atlantic Ocean. They are very easily identifiable from a characteristic ‘pie crust’ edge and claws and legs which are black tipped. They get their wonderful, unique taste from the good conditions in the areas. The seabed in Cromer is in relatively shallow water therefore, they filter in clean water. These conditions help the taste of crabs. The water is filled with nutrients so the crabs are particularly flavoursome, fragrant, and tender. This environment helps to support a high proportion of clean-living smaller crustaceans, molluscs, and bivalves, which the crabs feed on.

With its irresistible aroma, garlic has long been used as a flavour booster in recipes. From hot curries to pasta sauces, pizza toppings and dips, it has the power to instantly liven up any dish. That’s without mentioning its health benefits too. On the Isle of Wight, this much-loved Mediterranean staple is celebrated in a big way – there is even an annual garlic festival in its honour which is well worth a trip to the island in itself! So, what makes a tiny little clove of garlic so special? Garlic arrived on the Isle of Wight during the Second World War when French soldiers who were based here brought some bulbs over from France in order to be able to cook their own cuisine. Due to the well-balanced chalky soil, high light intensity and unique climate on the island, the soldiers discovered that garlic grew extremely robustly on the Isle of Wight.

Dunkirk is a town in Nord, a French department in northern France. It lies just a few miles from the Belgian border and is the third largest French harbour. Being so close to the Belgium region of Flanders it is heavily influenced by their cuisine. A very popular dish in the region is Carbonade Flamande, which is made from Flemish Beef (or on rare occasions pork) Onion, Beer, Thyme, Juniper Berries, Mustard and Spiced Bread, just before serving, a small amount of cider or wine vinegar and either brown sugar or red currant jelly are sometimes added to the final dish and served with small French Fries. In French, a carbon(n)ade may also be a dish of grilled pork loin but in English, carbonnade is generally the Belgian dish. Commonly recommended with the dish are a wide range of Belgium (Flemish) Beers - There are approximately 224 active breweries in Belgium some of which are in ‘Trappist monasteries.’ Most beers are served in bottles, and almost every beer has its own uniquely shaped, glass which can make a great gift. Two of the local beers that may be available are - Chimay Red Label (Dark, 7%), White Label (Blonde, 8%) Blue Label (Dark, 9%), Dorée Gold Cap (Blonde, 4.8%) and Westmalle Dubbel (7%) and Tripel (9.5%)!
