What if Hillary Rodham Had Never Married Bill Clinton? (5.28/6) I’ll say this for the former President. He still knows how to work a room and in so doing was able to sell Hillary Clinton in a way she’s never been able to do herself. The one line in his remarks to the DNC that struck me was when he told a young Hillary Rodham at Yale, “I really want you to marry me, but you shouldn’t do it.” Had she followed his advice, 2016 might be a very different year than it is now. He spoke of their days in Arkansas and remarked how one farmer had said they had elected the wrong Clinton. But can anyone honestly say that Hillary would have become her party’s nominee without her husband’s political achievements? Hillary is no Golda Meir or Margaret Thatcher much less a Theresa May or an Angela Merkel. Naturally there were many things he skipped over – his infidelities, her success with cattle futures and her 2008 presidential bid. You know the one where he called the Obama campaign “the biggest fairy tale.” Then there were curious things like associating Hillary with 9/11 during her tenure in the Senate. Remember when Hillary invoked 9/11 to justify her campaign contributions from Wall Street? And then there’s Donald Trump. Yes, he got a nice jab in against him regarding his mocking people with disabilities. But Bill Clinton didn’t object to playing golf with Trump nor did he reject his donations to the Clinton Foundation. In the grand scheme of things, Bill did nothing to harm Hillary tonight. But in a couple of nights, Hillary has got to stand on her own two feet. Bill Clinton, Bernie Sanders and President Obama can only take her so far. If Hillary Clinton gets less applause than the three of them when she speaks in 48 hours then she’s in real big trouble. Full speech: Former president Bill Clinton addresses the DNC cbsnews.com

Bernie Delegates Leave After Clinton Nominated At DNC (3.15/6) Democratic delegates supporting Sen. Bernie Sanders staged a walkout Tuesday at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) in response to Hillary Clinton getting the nomination. Clinton officially seized the nomination Tuesday, but her campaign has been plagued with controversy. Democratic leadership has been accused of colluding with her campaign to undercut her competition after Wikileaks released 20,000 emails. Sanders delegates walked out during the convention in response to her winning the nomination. “Honestly it kind of grew organically,” Oregon Delegate Steve Bintliff told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “I think a lot of state delegations for Bernie Sanders were really fed up with how we’ve been treated. That coupled with what we learned about Wikileaks over the weekend which showed basically there was no way for our candidate could have won. It was a fraud.” Bintliff adds that some delegates walked into the media tent outside the convention before police shut them in. Democratic Party Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz was forced to resign in the wake of the email leak. “It was manipulated from day one according to the articles we were able to see and documents I have personally read on Wikileaks,” Bintliff also noted. “There was collusion with the media and the full force of the DNC, which is supposed to be a mutual organization. They were basically put in the employment of the Hillary campaign.” Sanders supporters even claimed they were silenced by party officials while at the convention. Democratic officials were reportedly seizing signs from Sanders supporters at the convention. California Delegate Mary Yoon added they had to smuggle signs into the convention because party officials banned anything that didn’t show support for Clinton. “We were talking about how we should protest the nonsense that goes on inside this building,” Yoon told TheDCNF. “It’s a police state in there more or less and it’s a disgrace to the United States and as delegates I am going back to my constituents telling them exactly what happened.” Sanders has been viewed by many as a genuine political candidate. Clinton, however, has epitomized the established and the political system. Her ties to large corporations and banks have put her at odds with party members who truly believed in Sanders and his stance against Wall Street. “If she is lucky enough to get elected I think we’re going to see the first woman president also impeach among with her sexual predictor husband,” Yoon continued. “That’s what I think about him.” Follow Connor on Twitter Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience. 3 Fact-checking the second day of the 2016 Democratic National Convention (3.12/6) The highlight of the second day of the Democratic National Convention was a sentimental and anecdotal speech by former President Bill Clinton. In contrast to many of his speeches, such as his address to the DNC in 2012 , there were not many facts to check. Here’s a roundup of some of the most noteworthy claims that were made. As is our practice, we do not award Pinocchios for a roundup of claims made in convention events. “We moved 100 times as many people out of poverty as moved out when President Reagan was in office, with 40 percent more jobs.” — Bill Clinton, quoted in a DNC video This is a cherry-picked number. Bill Clinton’s staff had cited U. S. Census poverty statistics from 1993 to 2000 under Clinton, compared to the same statistics from 1981 to 1988 under Reagan. During those two periods, the number of people in poverty decreased by 77,000 under Reagan and 7.7 million under Clinton — nearly 100 times more than under Reagan. The data does not precisely match to presidential tenures, so the numbers can change if you use slightly different time frames. But raw numbers are less informative than using the actual poverty rate. The Wall Street Journal looked at the poverty rate instead of the sheer number of people, to take into account the population increase. It noted that the poverty rate has tended to rise around recessions — and Reagan’s record on poverty and jobs “appears diminished because a deep recession occurred shortly after he took office, and that recession also caused an uptick in poverty during the beginning of his presidency.” “So Mr. Clinton had 100 times more people leave poverty by one very particular metric under his presidency than did so under Mr. Reagan. But overall, both saw robust levels of job growth and saw declines against poverty (that proved to not last in subsequent years),” the Journal noted. “As with their record on jobs, much of the gap between Mr. Reagan and Mr. Clinton’s tenures is driven by the recession that began just a few months after Mr. Reagan took office.” Clinton cites the net job creation under his presidency compared to the net job creation under Reagan. But again, this measure does not take into account the state of the economy when they took office. “The approval of the United States was 20 points higher when she left as Secretary of State’s office than when she took it.” — Bill Clinton A campaign official said Clinton was citing a Meridian International Center and Gallup U. S.-Global Leadership Project poll that showed the median U. S. approval rating in Europe grew from 18 percent in 2008 to 41 percent in 2013. That’s a gain of 23 percentage points. But it’s just Europe; the gain in Asia was 14 percentage points. Moreover, other major polls on international net favorability rating of the United States show mixed results. Bloomberg Politics analyzed an aggregate of the three major polls from 2008 to 2014 to see if the data support the claim that Hillary Clinton improved America’s image as secretary of state. It used polling from Gallup, Pew Research Center and GlobeScan, a Toronto-based firm that conducts annual global surveys. Pew and GlobeScan found that the U. S. net favorability rating improved after January 2008, but declined in the second half of her term. Weighted data for the Gallup poll begins in August 2009, so Bloomberg could not compare how much the favorability rating changed since she became secretary of the state. But from August 2009 until summer 2011, favorability rating for U. S. leadership declined and remained flat after 2011. Bloomberg reported: “None of this is meant to be a grading of Clinton’s overall performance as secretary of state. The job requires much more than just maintaining a positive reputation for the country. Clinton’s role in gathering consensus for sanctions on Iran in order to bring them to the negotiating table on a nuclear agreement is often cited as a major achievement, as is her advocacy for women’s and girls’ rights in the developing world. Yet the broader claim that she restored America’s global reputation may be a harder sell. If these three polls are any indication, by the time Clinton left Foggy Bottom, global opinion about the U. S. had fallen to, or below, where it was when she got there.” “She compiled a really solid record, totally progressive on economic and social issues. She voted for and against some proposed trade deals.” — Bill Clinton Bill Clinton suggests that Hillary Clinton was somewhat split on trade deals — she was “totally progressive” — but her overall record as senator was to broadly support such agreements. As a senator, Clinton had a chance to vote on 10 trade deals, and she voted for or supported all but two: the Trade Act of 2002, essentially a trade deal involving Colombia, Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru, and the 2005 Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement. Moreover, as secretary of state, she also championed the negotiations that led to the Trans-Pacific Partnership; only as a presidential candidate, when challenged by Sen. Bernie Sanders, she suddenly said she opposed the final negotiated text. Of course, Bill Clinton as president was a supporter of two trade actions that Donald Trump and liberal Democrats has heavily criticized: the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the decision to grant China permanent normal trade relations, which led to a flood of Chinese imports. “So the second time I tried a different tack. I said I really want you to marry me, but you shouldn’t do it. And she smiled and looked at me, like, what is this boy up to? She said that is not a very good sales pitch. I said I know, but it’s true. And I meant it, it was true. I said I know most of the young Democrats our age who want to go into politics, they mean well and they speak well, but none of them is as good as you are at actually doing things to make positive changes in people’s lives. So I suggested she go home to Illinois or move to New York and look for a chance to run for office. She just laughed and said, are you out of you mind, nobody would ever vote for me.” — Bill Clinton This is a sweet story, but apparently it is of relatively recent vintage. It also does not sound like Hillary Clinton remembers it quite this way either. Here’s her version, from an article that appeared in New York magazine in May: Bill Clinton famously had to propose to Hillary Rodham several times before she agreed to marry him and move to Arkansas. In recent years, he’s started telling a version of the story in which he was urging her not to marry him, and instead run for office in New York or Chicago, and in which she replied that that was a ridiculous idea: She was too aggressive; no one would vote for her. “I don’t think he said that when he actually proposed,” she told me with a smile when I brought up this version of the story. “But it was kind of a theme that he would go back to.” He wasn’t the only one. The conviction of many of her friends that she should go into politics stemmed, she said, from the fact that “I was really interested in politics and I was really interested in policy and there weren’t that many young women who were. So the fact that I was kind of catalyzed people’s imagining … ‘Oh my gosh, you could run for office!’ ” But, Clinton said, in those days she saw herself as “an advocate, using my legal training, using whatever other skills I had to investigate, research, speak out.” In other words, Clinton pictured herself, as generations of other ambitious women had, as being of service, not as a headliner. “We saw Hillary’s heart when, as First Lady, she worked across party lines to bring health care to millions of children.” — Sen. Barbara Boxer (Calif.) Boxer utters a variation of a line that previously earned the Clinton campaign Two Pinocchios. But the language is adjusted to not suggest Clinton was so central to the effort. The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was signed into law in 1997 by her husband, then-President Bill Clinton. But the evidence is slim that Clinton worked with members of both parties on passing the legislation; she at best played a behind-the-scenes role at the White House. By all accounts, the prime mover behind CHIP was the late Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-Mass.). He was inspired by a similar Massachusetts program and then enlisted Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) as his partner in the effort. Kennedy had to overcome opposition at the Clinton White House in order to get the measure passed, though Hillary Clinton was considered an ally at the White House. In 1998, the Clintons were urging states to sign up for the program, and Hillary Clinton took a more overt public role in promoting it. As Boxer’s statement is phrased, she also could be referring to that effort, which was essential to getting children signed up, thus softening the campaign statements that suggest Clinton had a key role in passing the legislation. “[After the Clinton health-care bill failed] Hillary immediately went to work on solving the problems the bill sought to address one by one. The most important goal was to get more children with health insurance. In 1997, Congress passed the Children’s Health Insurance Program, still an important part of President Obama’s Affordable Care Act. It insures more than 8 million kids.” — Bill Clinton This is a variation of the same theme, but even more artfully phrased by the former president. He suggests she played a role — “immediately went to work” — but when he mentions the bill he does not say Hillary Clinton played much of a role. He simply notes that Congress passed it. “We need a president who knows it’s just plain wrong that women make 79 cents for every dollar paid to a man.” — Boxer Few experts dispute that there is a wage gap, but differences in the life choices of men and women — such as women tending to leave the workforce when they have children — make it difficult to make simple comparisons. But “79 cents” is a bit facile. Boxer is relying on a simple calculation from the Census Bureau : a ratio of the difference between women’s median earnings and men’s median earnings. (The median is the middle value, with an equal number of full-time workers earning more and earning less.) That leaves a pay gap of 21 cents. But the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the gap is 17 cents when looking at weekly wages. The gap is even smaller when you look at hourly wages — 15 cents — but then not every wage earner is paid on an hourly basis, so that statistic excludes salaried workers. Annual wage figures do not take into account the fact that teachers — many of whom are women — have a primary job that fills nine months out of the year. The weekly wage is more of an apples-to-apples comparison, but it does not include as many income categories. Critics of the Census statistic have noted that the wage gap is affected by a number of factors, including that the average woman has less work experience than the average man and that more of the weeks worked by women are part-time rather than full-time. Women also tend to leave the workforce for periods to raise children, seek jobs that may have more flexible hours but lower pay, and choose careers that tend to have lower pay. (BLS data show that women who have never married have virtually no wage gap; they earn nearly 94 cents for every dollar a man makes.) In 2016, a comprehensive review conducted by Francine D. Blau and Lawrence M. Kahn of Cornell University found that about 50 percent of the wage gap could be explained by a variety of factors largely in a woman’s control, such as choice of occupation and industry. The level of experience helped explain another 14 percent of the wage gap. But Blau and Kahn said that 38 percent is “unexplained” and could be the result of discrimination. That adds up to almost an eight-cent differential between men and women, much less than the 21 cents suggested by the raw Census data. “Hillary’s opponent says he thinks ‘wages are too high.'” —Boxer Donald Trump did say this during a November 2015 Republican primary debate, but he has clarified his claim since then. During the debate, Trump was asked whether he was “sympathetic to the protesters’ cause since a $15 wage works out to about $31,000 a year.” His full answer , with the part Boxer is quoting in bold: “I can’t be, Neil. And the reason I can’t be is that we are a country that is being beaten on every front economically, militarily. There is nothing that we do now to win. We don’t win anymore. Our taxes are too high. I’ve come up with a tax plan that many, many people like very much. It’s going to be a tremendous plan. I think it’ll make our country and our economy very dynamic. But, taxes too high, wages too high, we’re not going to be able to compete against the world. I hate to say it, but we have to leave it the way it is. People have to go out, they have to work really hard and have to get into that upper stratum. But we cannot do this if we are going to compete with the rest of the world. We just can’t do it.” Days later, Trump clarified he was referring to whether he would increase the minimum wage. He would not raise it, because then it would be “too high,” he said. Trump’s stance on the federal minimum wage has continued to shift. On Tuesday, a Trump campaign official clarified that the Republican presidential nominee supports a federal minimum wage as an entry training wage, and opposes increasing it to $15 “since it becomes a barrier to entry-level employment.” Also on Tuesday, Trump said in an interview on Fox News that he supports raising the federal minimum wage to $10, and that states can raise it higher. Donald Trump “wants to punish women for having abortions.” — Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America Yes, Trump made this comment, but he quickly recanted it. In a response to a question about his stance on abortion rights, Trump said during a March 2016 town hall with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews that there “ has to be some form of punishment ” for abortion. MATTHEWS: Do you believe in punishment for abortion, yes or no as a principle? TRUMP: The answer is that there has to be some form of punishment. MATTHEWS: For the woman. TRUMP: Yeah, there has to be some form. MATTHEWS: Ten cents? Ten years? What? TRUMP: I don’t know. That I don’t know. That I don’t know. MATTHEWS: Why not? TRUMP: I don’t know. Trump walked back his comment within hours. He released a statement clarifying he meant that the doctor should be punished, not the woman: “If Congress were to pass legislation making abortion illegal and the federal courts upheld this legislation, or any state were permitted to ban abortion under state and federal law, the doctor or any other person performing this illegal act upon a woman would be held legally responsible, not the woman. The woman is a victim in this case as is the life in her womb. My position has not changed – like Ronald Reagan, I am pro-life with exceptions.” In 1999, he publicly said he supported abortion rights — but he is now a vocal opponent of women’s right to abortion. Still, Trump has expressed various opinions on anti-abortion policies, and his comments have been criticized by both Republicans and Democrats. “Donald Trump also has a strange admiration for dictators such as Saddam Hussein, Kim Jong-un, and Vladimir Putin.” — Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright Here’s some context for this statement: Trump on North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un: “If you look at North Korea — this guy, he’s like a maniac, okay? And you have to give him credit. How many young guys — he was like 26 or 25 when his father died — take over these tough generals, and all of a sudden — you know, it’s pretty amazing when you think of it. How does he do that? Even though it is a culture and it’s a cultural thing, he goes in, he takes over, and he’s the boss. It’s incredible. He wiped out the uncle. He wiped out this one, that one. I mean, this guy doesn’t play games.” — rally in Iowa on Jan. 9 Trump on Iraqi President Saddam Hussein: “We shouldn’t have destabilized — Saddam Hussein was a bad guy. Right? He was a bad guy. Really bad guy. But you know what, he did well. He killed terrorists. He did that so good.” — speech in North Carolina, July 5, 2016 “Saddam Hussein, who’s a bad guy and all of that, but he made a living off killing terrorists.” — interview on CBS’s “Face the Nation,” Feb. 14, 2016 “Whether you like Saddam Hussein or not, he used to kill terrorists. Now if you go to Iraq, it’s like the Harvard for terrorists.” — quoted by BuzzFeedNews, Feb. 13, 2014 Trump on Russian President Vladimir Putin: “I will tell you in terms of leadership he is getting an ‘A,’ and our president is not doing so well. They did not look good together.” — interview on Fox News, Sept. 29, 2015 “Today, millions of people in the world are held in forced labor or sexual servitude.” —Sen. Amy Klobuchar (Minn.) In her remarks, Klobuchar referenced broad estimates that there are millions — nearly 21 million, according to the International Labor Organization — in the world who are the victims of forced labor. The majority are forced into private or state economic enterprises, but 22 percent are estimated to be forced into sexual exploitation. But then she focused on a specific case in her home state—the abduction of a 12-year-old girl who was forced into sex acts. She mentioned the case to highlight the fact that trafficking also takes place in the United States. The juxtaposition might give the impression that sex trafficking of minors is widespread in the United States. Data is sparse but a recent study funded by the Justice Department concluded that the number of juveniles in the sex trade in the United States is about 9,000 to 10,000, far below previous estimates. 4 BLM Protest Hillary At DNC: 'She's Killing Black People' (2.10/6) PHILADELPHIA — As Democrat delegates prepared to nominate Hillary Clinton as their nominee for president Tuesday, Black Lives Matter protesters marched through the streets of Philadelphia chanting: “Don’t vote for Hillary, she’s killing black people.” “Hillary Clinton stole the election,” one protester told The Daily Caller News Foundation, referring to the Wikileaks release of Democratic National Committee emails showing they collaborated with Clinton to thwart Sen. Bernie Sanders. “The Wikileaks documents confirm what our suspicions were all along.” (Rachel Stoltzfoos/The DCNF) As Black Lives posted up in downtown Philly to continue their rally, a section of the protesters broke off and continued marching toward the DNC chanting: “Hell no DNC, we won’t vote for Hillary.” Others protesters processed a large wooden coffin symbolizing the death of the Democratic Party through the streets, as a man played a sad song on bagpipes. Upside down donkeys marked the sides. Later, as news of the nomination broke, the Black Lives protesters continued their march, with a moderated chant: “Fuck Hillary Clinton, she’s killing black people.” (Rachel Stoltzfoos/The DCNF) Not all of the protesters were so clear on their purpose for joining the march. “I’m here for the movement. The gathering. Unity,” a black man named Sherrieff told TheDCNF. “DNC, black lives matter, black guns matter, all lives matter. We here. Supporting everything.” “I’m trying to support everyone,” added another protester, Duan Byrd. A sizable group of police officers walked before, around and behind the protest, with a good number bringing up the rear, along with police vehicles and ambulances. 6 Jill Stein courts Bernie backers at DNC (VIDEO) — RT America (1.02/6) “Forget the lesser evil, fight for the greater good,” Stein said, referring to her Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton while the crowd chanted “Jill, not Hill!” “We are the revolution,” she added. In response to the DNC’s apology to Bernie Sanders for the emails that caused chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz to step down this week, Stein said: “They did much more than say bad things. They sabotaged a revolutionary campaign.” She later told RT in an interview that her campaign’s fundraising efforts have skyrocketed since Sanders endorsed Clinton ahead of the DNC. READ MORE: Donations to Green candidate Jill Stein skyrocket after Sanders endorses Clinton The medical doctor also said she would step down as the Green Party’s candidate if Sanders wanted to run on that ticket. However, Dr Cornel West – a Bernie backer and former member of the DNC’s platform committee who went on to endorse Stein over Clinton after he was disillusioned by the process – told RT that he was disappointed by Sanders’ decision to endorse the former secretary of state. The Jill Stein rally of hundreds of people spilled out of a large tent set up in the so-called “Free Speech Zone” in Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, located next to the convention venue. A ferocious thunderstorm forced Stein and several supporters to a safety area under a freeway overpass. Stein used the opportunity to make a second speech, this time with a bullhorn, for those waiting out the storm. A recent poll taken after last week’s Republican Convention shows Stein in fourth place behind Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson with three percent of the vote, according to a RealClearPolitics aggregator . She requires 15 percent to be included in the upcoming debates. Stein and her 2012 running mate Cheri Honkala were detained when trying to debate and in 2012. “I think our arrest and holding in a blacksite was just one piece of evidence of the many ways we are not a democracy,” Stein told RT. “We basically silence political opposition and we keep people off the ballot, out of the debates, and out of the media. The kind of collusion that you saw revealed in the emails that were released reveal what’s going on here with the corporate press, the Hillary campaign, and the DNC. So if that was going on with Bernie Sanders, might there also be something going on [with] other political opponents? We are a very inconvenient truth, as another woman who is actually a progressive candidate.” The Greens will hold their convention in Houston, Texas next weekend, where Stein is expected to officially receive the nomination. Although she has yet to pick a running mate, West said he would not accept an offer if extended by Stein, since that’s “not his calling.” Speaking during a live Periscope after Bernie Sanders’ speech, one of his delegates from New Mexico said she is now backing Stein over Sanders, while another is still undecided and will consider backing the Green Party. Neither of them said they would back Trump.

SABC won’t allow journalists back at work while it appeals Labour Court ruling (1.02/6) Labour Court Judge Robert la Grange ruled on Tuesday that Foeta Krige‚ Suna Venter‚ Krivani Pillay and Jacques Steenkamp were unlawfully dismissed and said they could return to work. But the broadcaster’s legal team has sent their union‚ Solidarity‚ a letter saying they would appeal against the judgement. “In the premise please be advised that your client may not report for duty pending the outcome of the appeal‚” said the letter. Solidarity chief executive Dirk Hermann published a copy of the letter on Twitter early on Wednesday. “SABC intends to appeal judgement. They advise SABC 4 not to report for duty pending outcome of appeal‚” he tweeted. Now the legal battle will intensify as the union plans to lodge an urgent legal bid on Wednesday to force the broadcaster to let the journalists return to work‚ pending the appeal. “Solidarity disappointed in SABC's ongoing efforts to continue their unlawful actions. They show lack of moral integrity‚” said Hermann. Three other journalists axed by the SABC are still fighting against their dismissal. The censorship policy the axed journalists were fired over is an edict from SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng‚ who himself has remained at work despite a court ruling that his appointment was irregular and should be set aside.

DA ‘invites’ IEC to take action against Joburg ads that ‘endorse Tau’ (1.00/6) The opposition party has taken issue with City of Johannesburg advertisements that “specifically endorse” mayor Parks Tau. The DA’s federal executive chairman‚ James Selfe and his party’s mayoral candidate‚ Herman Mashaba‚ laid a complaint against the African National Congress (ANC) at the IEC offices in Parktown on Friday morning. “We are confident that the IEC will accede to our request‚ but if it fails or refuses to do so we will seek other legal avenues to compel adherence to the Electoral Code‚” said Selfe. Mashaba had‚ prior to opening the case‚ said the use of “millions of rand worth of taxpayer’s money… threatens the fairness of the elections and is in contravention of the Municipal Electoral Act”. The adverts‚ Selfe said later‚ state that Tau “is a great leader‚ listing an award for which he has been nominated and conclude by saying ‘clearly the City of Johannesburg is in good hands’ ”. Selfe noted that “Tau is currently the mayor of Johannesburg‚ but he is also an ANC candidate in the coming municipal election”. “Any reasonable listener would conclude that the advertisement is only aimed at influencing the outcome of the election in Johannesburg‚ by promoting the candidature of Mr Tau and the ANC‚” Selfe said‚ adding that “this is an infringement of the code”. “We are inviting the IEC to fulfil its mandate and to order the ANC to compel Tau to remove these advertisements‚” he said. “As a courtesy I yesterday wrote to the secretary-general of the ANC to alert him to his duties in terms of the code‚ and to ask him to order Tau to desist with this advertising. We are now asking the IEC do this.”

Fire Faith and suspend Hlaudi‚ DA urges ANC (1.00/6) “The summoning of Communications Minister Faith Muthambi and the SABC board to Luthuli House will not solve the public broadcaster's problems‚” said the DA’s Phumzile Van Damme. “It is likely to result in another whitewash as evidenced by Gwede Mantashe's ‘Gupta probe’. “If the ANC is serious about fixing problems at the SABC‚ it would have at its press conference yesterday‚ called on the government to take steps that would set the SABC on a path to recovery.” Van Damme noted too that the “board does not report to Luthuli House‚ it accounts to Parliament‚ and their summoning to Luthuli House constitutes an infringement on the principle of the separation of party and state”. She said her party had complied a list of “16 things to set the SABC on a path to recovery”: - Suspend COO‚ Hlaudi Motsoeneng‚ and institute an independent and impartial disciplinary inquiry into his fitness to hold office; - Suspend the SABC’s non-executive board members and chairperson Mbulayeni Maguvhe for failing in their duties to hold the SABC’s management accountable; - Suspended acting CEO‚ and CFO of the SABC‚ James Aguma for providing financial backing for Motsoeneng’s censorship project; - Drop the disciplinary charges against the SABC staffers suspended for speaking out against Motsoeneng; - Advertise the positions of SABC COO and CFO requiring suitably qualified and impartial broadcasting professionals to head the SABC; - Allow the Portfolio Committee on Communications to interview candidates to serve as an interim board until a new board is appointed; - Provide full disclosure for the reasons for the suspension of SABC CEO Frans Matlala in November 2015; - Reverse the approval of the SABC’s revised editorial policy - which gives SABC COO total control over the public broadcaster - and conduct public consultation; - Drop the Supreme Court of Appeal petition appealing the Western Cape High Court’s decision that found that Motsoeneng’s appointment as COO was irrational and unlawful and thus set it aside; - Implement the remedial action required by the public protector; - Reverse the ban on the airing of footage of violent protests; - Reverse the ban on the reading of newspaper headlines on SABC radio and TV stations; - Reverse the canning of “The Editors” on SAFM; - Reverse the canning of “Kommentaar” on RSG; - Commit to providing equitable and fair coverage of all political parties on SABC stations ahead of the local government election; and - Fire Faith Muthambi for failing to conduct proper oversight over the SABC. Failure to implement these would mean that the words of Jackson Mthembu‚ who held Tuesday’s ANC briefing “will be nothing but hot air”‚ Van Damme said. “The ANC’s sudden awakening to the chaos at the SABC is bizarre and should be met with much scepticism considering they are on record backing Motsoeneng and much of his censorship. “Motsoeneng is because of the ANC.” ‘DA’s white supremacists have appropriated Madiba’: ANC timeslive.co.za 2016-07-27 12:00 TMG Digital www.timeslive.co.za

Of the People Mayor Shirley Franklin started a program in the city of Atlanta in which every single student who graduated from a public school, she’d find a way to pay for their first year of college. And, after hearing my story, she took an interest in me. She gave me a job in her office and she helped me get into college. Summer came, and I didn’t go to work because I didn’t have a suit. I got a call saying, “You need to get to work,” and she had someone take me suit shopping. They took me and bought me like five different suits and said, “This is how you invest in your kids.” I’m the first person in my family to graduate from college. That is the kind of local politics I grew to love in Atlanta. National politics is more messy. But I have hope that is going to change. Photograph by Ryan Stone for The New York Times

PSL newcomers Cape Town City sign Tshepo Gumede from Orlando Pirates The club on Tuesday announced the addition of Tshepo Gumede to their ranks as they continue to add new squad members to the 14 who came from Gauteng when Comitis bought the Mpumalanga Black Aces franchise last month. “It has been very hectic but it is now all coming together. I want to get a few more players in by the end of the week so that we have a decent preparatory time together before our first match‚ which is against Polokwane City at home‚” he said. It is expected Comitis will get one more player from Pirates as he has agreed to allow Jackson Mabokgwane‚ current member of the Bafana Bafana squad‚ to go in the other direction. But concerns over salary demands means it is not likely to be any of the high profile players that the Buccaneers have recently placed on the transfer list‚ like Sifiso Myeni and Lehlohonolo Majoro. Newcomers already announced by City are Shaquille Abrahams (FC Cape Town)‚ Duncan Adonis (Ramblers)‚ Never Ngcuka (Cape United)‚ Roland Putsche (Wolfsberger AC in Austria)‚ Ebrahim Seedat (Milano United) and Matt Sim‚ last at Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia. The club are already looking at handing another of their foreigner berths to Latvian international defender Renard Rode‚ who was on trial at Black Aces last season but who signed for a club in the Czech Republic last season when Aces ran out of berths for foreign signings. Rode has been in the Mother City for a week now training with the club‚ who also have central defender Robyn Johannes (ex-Sundowns‚ Pirates‚ AmaZulu) among the trialists they are looking at.

13 DA asks SCA to deny petitions from ‘Hlaudi and his band of protectors’ The party said it will pen an affidavit asking the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) to deny petitions for leave to appeal the Western Cape High Court’s setting aside of the appointment Motsoeneng as South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) chief operating officer. Theses petitions were expected from Motsoeneng‚ the SABC board and Communications Minister Faith Muthambi following Judge Dennis Davis’ dismissal earlier this year of their application for leave to appeal his judgment that found Motsoeneng’s appointment from acting to permanent COO was unlawful and irrational. “Mr Motsoeneng‚ Minister Muthambi and the SABC have been unsuccessful in almost all courts in which he has sought to keep his job‚” said the DA’s James Selfe. “Indeed the Western Cape High Court already found that the three government respondents ignored the remedial action ordered by the public protector‚ which the SCA slated is ‘irrational and unlawful’‚” he added. “To petition the SCA again on this matter is in itself irrational and a desperate attempt by the SABC and Minister Muthambi to protect a COO who has all but driven the public broadcaster into the ground.” Selfe also raised Monday’s decision by the Independent Communications Authority of SA’s (Icasa) Complaints and Compliance Committee to order the SABC to immediately withdraw the decision not to cover violent protests‚ which was attributed to Motsoeneng. “This is the latest independent body that has slated Mr Motsoeneng in his crusade to turn the SABC into his own personal fiefdom with his latest attempts to chill free speech by censoring any and all protest footage under the guise of cultivating ‘national unity’‚” he said. Motsoeneng has already indicated that the SABC will take the Icasa ruling on review. Selfe said of his party’s SCA affidavit that “while going to the courts is not the most desirable course of action‚ other remedies have proved unsuccessful”. He added that his party was “optimistic that the court will decline any petitions that will result in Mr Motsoeneng keeping his job”.

Blasts & fire at arms factory in Azerbaijan, 2 killed, 24 injured (VIDEO) — RT News “Two people died following an explosion at the arms factory in Shrivan,” the Defense Department said in a statement, adding that both victims had worked at the factory. Azerbaijan’s president, Ilham Aliyev, issued an order on Tuesday to set up a state commission to look into the cause of the explosion and an investigation into the fire at the factory has been launched as well, the prosecutor’s office reported. Twenty-four people have been taken to hospital following the incident, according to hospital officials. Both the country's health and defense ministries have said that no one was killed. An earlier report from the Azerbaijan Press Agency (APA) stated that a local woman had died of severe burns. After an initial explosion, blasts continued to rock the factory, eyewitnesses said, according to RIA. The blaze engulfed a large area of the factory grounds. Residents have been evacuated from the surrounding area, according to local media. The blast took place in the city of Shirvan, in central Azerbaijan. The factory is mainly tasked with ammunition production, Interfax reported. A criminal investigation has been launched into the incident, APA reported. The fire was initially caused by sparks ignited through the scrapping of old weapons, the Defense Ministry said. Earlier reports suggested it was triggered by a short circuit.

Britain consigning refugee children to squalor and traffickers Lone children have been reported living in squalid conditions and at risk from smuggling gangs across the European Union. Research by the Lords EU committee also found that young migrants are confronted with a culture of suspicion and disbelief, which leads to neglect by social services. At least 10,000 asylum seeking children are currently missing. According to peers, the report proves the “harrowing” conditions some refugee children live under, including squalid accommodation, daily destitution and emotional desperation over their future. “The current refugee crisis is the greatest humanitarian challenge the EU has faced in its lifetime,” said the committee’s chairwoman Baroness Prashar. “At the sharp end of this crisis are unaccompanied migrant children, who are being failed across the board. “We found that these children face suspicion on arrival. They are seen as ‘somebody else’s problem,’ and the conditions they live in were described to us as deplorable and squalid. We found a clear failure among EU countries, including the UK, to shoulder their fair share of the burden.” She added that the Lords openly “regretted” the “government’s reluctance to relocate migrant children to the UK, in particular those living in terrible conditions in the camps near the Channel ports.” The number of asylum requests by under 18s without their parents or guardians has risen sharply over the last year. Close to 90,000 children came to Europe in 2015 - an increase of nearly 300 percent. In Britain there were over 3,000 applications from lone minor migrants last year, which was more than double the amount seen in 2014. The committee insisted that EU member states were “fundamentally” failing to comply with their obligations to welcome and protect children “in a manner that recognises their specific vulnerability.” It added that the refugee camps bordering Britain, namely those at the French port towns of Calais and Dunkirk, are “wholly unsuitable” for children. A Home Office spokeswoman said: “By legislating through the Immigration Act 2016 we have made crystal clear our commitment to bringing vulnerable children from Europe to the UK. More than 20 children have been accepted for transfer to the UK since the Act was given royal assent and the majority of these have already arrived. “We are consulting with local authorities across the country to confirm available capacity and ensure appropriate support systems are in place. We are also in active discussions with the UNHCR and the Italian, Greek and French governments to strengthen and speed up mechanisms to identify, assess and transfer children to the UK and ensure this in their best interests.”

‘Corbyn doesn’t get patriotism,’ claims Owen Smith … while defending links to tax avoidance firm — RT UK The Rotherham MP told BBC Newsnight that Corbyn holds “ liberal ” ideas that are at odds with traditional Labour notions of nationhood, nationalism and patriotism. Smith claimed Labour leader Corbyn’s “ metropolitan ” perspective is not central to the Labour tradition. The leadership challenger says he will keep NATO’s target of spending 2 percent of GDP on defense, will ensure Trident nuclear weapons are renewed and is prepared to launch a nuclear strike if he becomes prime minister. “ One of the weaknesses we have had recently is that people worry that Labour isn’t serious about security, that it is a lesser issue for Jeremy ,” Smith told the BBC. “ I’m not sure that’s right, but he has certainly got a different perspective on some of those things - on patriotism if you like; and on security, on defense I think I have got a more traditional Labour perspective on that - an old- fashioned Labour perspective, if you like .” Smith went on to say he thinks Corbyn “ doesn’t really understand ” people’s sense of where they are from. “ I am not sure I’ve heard him talking much about Scotland and identity or about Wales and identity or indeed about England and identity . “ I suspect that Jeremy has got a rather more metropolitan sense of that and that’s not one I think is central to the Labour tradition .” Smith’s comments come days after he was accused of accepting £60,000 worth of free advice from accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) while serving as shadow Treasury minister in 2011. Smith received the gift, worth a total £58,530, in November 2011. He claims it was a “ donation in kind ” of “ ad hoc ” advice provided to Labour during the passage of the Finance (No. 4) Bill. The MP received this guidance over a six month period, until May 2012. Former Chair of the Public Accounts Committee Margaret Hodge described PwC’s relationship with MPs as “ inappropriate .” In a February 2015 report, she accused PwC of “ the promotion of tax avoidance on an industrial scale .” A spokesman for Smith said: “ When working on complex legislation, MPs routinely take advice from relevant experts. In 2011 Owen was one of several shadow ministers who received some advice from PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) and this was registered as a donation in kind for the work he performed.”

Palestinian Authority aims to sue Britain for 1917 Balfour Declaration to remove Arabs — RT UK Originally signed by UK Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour, the agreement officially sanctioned the Zionist movement’s aims, leading to its later colonization of what was then the Ottoman-held territory of Palestine. Now the Palestinian Authority’s (PA) chief foreign minister, Riyad al-Malki, has told the Arab League that Britain will be held to account for its part in what Palestinians still see as a cataclysmic event. That decision, al-Maliki told the League on Monday, “ gave people who don’t belong there something that wasn’t theirs. ” It is not clear where or how the PA will sue. The UK government has yet to respond. The move is the latest attempt by a former colony or nation pushing for reparations after claiming to have been wronged. On July 11, a group of British MPs unveiled a bill seeking the return of the Elgin Marbles to Greece, exactly 200 years since the British parliament approved the purchase of the ancient sculptures. The sculptures were removed from the Parthenon temple by Lord Elgin during his time as ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Following a parliamentary inquiry into the legality of Elgin’s acquisition, the government bought the ancient relics, which are currently on display in London’s British Museum. The case was eventually rejected. In July 2015, Labour MP Keith Vaz called on then-PM David Cameron to return the giant diamond which adorns the Queen’s crown to its rightful Indian home. When first mined in India, the diamond was a gargantuan 793 carats. It changed hands between various invading powers before ending up in the possession of the British, after they confiscated it from the Sikh Empire. Vaz’s comments followed a speech at Oxford University by Indian politician Shashi Tharoor, in which he called for Britain to pay reparations to India for its colonial record there.

Russia's Kaspersky Lab, Intel & Europol take on ransomware — RT Business Ransomware is a form of a computer virus which can lock a user’s computer or encrypt the data. The victims can only get back control of the device if they pay a ransom. The project is available through the portal ‘No More Ransom’ , and is aimed at informing people about the threat of ransomware and helping victims unlock data without paying a ransom. This type of virus is said to be a top threat for European law enforcement, with almost two thirds of EU countries conducting investigations into malware attacks. Corporate and government networks are affected as well as personal devices. According to Kaspersky Lab, the number of users attacked by crypto- ransomware increased five-fold, from 131,000 in 2014/2015 to 718,000 in 2015/16. TeslaCrypt, CTB-Locker, Scatter and Cryakl are among the most common malware, responsible for about 80 percent of attacks. “The key problem today involves people paying the cybercriminals, as they do not see another way-out to get back access to their data of value,” said Fyodor Sinitsin senior antivirus analyst at Kaspersky Lab, stressing that it led to new crypto-ransomware hackers and a general boost in the cyber- criminal economy. Criminals are constantly inventing more complicated ways to attack individual users, businesses, damaging personal computers and mobile devices, according to Wil van Gemert, Deputy Director of Europol, Operations Department. Kaspersky Lab has been cooperating with Europol for a number of years. In 2014, the Russian company unveiled its assistance to Europol, the FBI and the UK Government Communications Headquarters, conducting operations against cyber-criminals, who attacked online banking systems. A year after the company said it had participated in the investigation against the Carbanak gang that stole money from bank accounts and payment systems all over the world.

19 Fransman miffed about learning his ‘sexual harassment’ fate via the media Fransman said he was appalled to learn‚ via a media report at the weekend‚ that he is likely to face the chop for bringing the party into disrepute for allegedly sexually harassing 21-year-old Louisa Wynand during the ANC’s 104th birthday celebrations in January. City Press reported that the commission recommended that he relinquish all positions he held in the party. “It is with emphatic appal that I have learned today from the media some of the content of the apparent findings of the ANC’s integrity committee in the matter of an unsubstantiated ‘sexual harassment’ complaint against me‚ without having received any notification whatsoever from the committee myself‚” he said in a statement on Sunday. “Such outrageous breach of ANC protocol and principle clearly brings the ANC into disrepute and seriously tarnishes the image of the ANC. “I didn't expect this from an internal structure of the organisation that is supposed to uphold the organisational protocols‚” he said. He claimed that the committee had written to him in February‚ “saying they cannot deal with the merits of the allegations”. He told it in April that it had been “compromised by political expediency‚ orchestrated by factions having previously – and continuously – failed to effect my political demise”. Wynand‚ TMG Digital reported in June‚ was allegedly offered a full bursary to study by the ANC while the committee conducted its probe. “Louisa received the bursary offer from the ANC‚ just after the ANC’s integrity commission meeting‚” said her spokesman Gavin Prins. Fransman has stated previously that he would prefer to have his day in court sooner rather than later to clear his name. He demanded the party furnish him with a copy of the committee’s findings. 2016-07-27 12:00 TMG Digital www.timeslive.co.za

Plenty of cash, not enough competent people in municipalities: Pravin Gordhan Business leaders had told Gordhan of their frustrations with municipalities who struggle to deliver basic services. Gordhan said there was money to help municipalities deliver the services‚ but there was a shortage of capable people who could ensure the funds are spent prudently‚ such as engineers and financial managers. “Over the last few years‚ we have created a certain environment where certain minimum competency tests need to be passed. Many have actually passed that hurdle‚ but there is still a lot to do‚” he said. “Building proper institutions at a municipal level is obviously a generations- long process. But if each generation does the right thing‚ then we will build a more solid foundation for the next one.” Gordhan had earlier told the chamber that South Africa faced “no shortage of money in the system‚ but there is a shortage of implementation capacity to get things done”. “Our focus needs to be not just talking‚ but implementing our plans; implementation of plans and programmes with the money that we currently have in the system‚” he said. He urged the business community to find solutions to the tough economic conditions and not use easy solutions such as retrenchments to address challenges. “You and ourselves need to do as much as we can to keep as many workers as possible. Labour and government need to make sure that we develop the right plans to make sure that we do not increase the number of unemployed people in South Africa‚” Gordhan said. He said that “Team South Africa” had worked hard to make sure that it keeps the country's credit rating just above junk status in the first six months of the 2016. The bigger challenge would be to provide “concrete: initiatives that would show that the promise made to agencies in the first half of the year were been delivered on in the second half.

When President Zuma endorsed his daughter’s TV show This week‚ she was at pains to dismiss suggestions that her father being the president of the country had anything to do with her television drama Uzalo being renewed by the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC). She did this in a Twitter rant in reaction to a Sunday Times report that SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng – said to be an ally of President Jacob Zuma - overruled his staff to push through a R167-million contract with a production company co-owned by Zuma-Ncube. Among the tweets – each prefaced with the word “Fact” – was this from @guguzuma: “Fact: I can't help who my parents are. But what I have always done is to put my head down and I work harder than everyone around me. #Uzalo”. But‚ five years ago today‚ an endorsement for Zuma-Ncube came from the top Twitter office in the country. On July 15 2011‚ Jacob G. Zuma @SAPresident – a verified account - posted: “I encourage you all to tune into channel 107 Tonight on dstv at 7pm for a new sitcom 'it's for life' it promises to be great #itsforlife”. That post came in the morning ahead of the premiere of "It’s For Life with Gugulethu Zuma as Coco and Nokuthula Zuma as Jabu”. The sitcom that aired on Mzansi Magic was described at the time as revolving around “four 20-something girls who find a squatter living in their house who they can't seem to get rid of”. The reaction to the president’s tweet ranged from disapproval to disbelief. @AlexForsy said: "embarrassing that you use your twitter account to advertise your daughters sitcom. Is it tax sponsored as well? " while @Setjadphoko agreed‚ tweeting: "Self interest neh? The President should shy away from that! Its wrong". A fake Julius Malema account‚ @Julius_S_Malema‚ which had over 51 000 followers at the time responded: 'Why? Bcz it has 2 of your daughters? " The @SAPresident account is still open‚ but this has not been posted on since October 2013. @PresidencyZA – the “official Twitter page of The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa” - is the account now used to communicate on behalf of Zuma these days.

Prosecutors seek more control over ex- officials' income, property — RT Russian politics The Russian Prosecutor General’s Office initiated the motion, which seeks to broaden the list of persons subject to obligatory control of income and spending, the head of the agency’s Directorate for Control of Execution of Anti-Corruption Laws Aleksandr Rusetskiy said in an interview with Izvestia daily. READ MORE: Tax your ex: Russia may force former spouses of officials to declare income The bill extends these obligations not only to current civil servants, but also to former officials. The document also allows for the confiscation of the cash equivalent of any property that has been purchased with funds of unconfirmed origin. In addition, the draft imposes tougher control on the existing ban on accounts and securities held in foreign banks for Russian officials, by allowing the Prosecutor General’s Office and the state financial watchdog Rosfinmonitoring to request information about such assets from foreign partners. Rusetskiy also said that his agency deemed it reasonable to change the Russian law so that companies whose representatives voluntarily inform law enforcement about attempts of bribery or graft committed by civil servants are relieved from responsibility. Currently, such a rule only applies to citizens who help expose corrupted officials. The Anti-Corruption Law providing for the mandatory declaration of incomes by all state officials was first introduced in Russia in 2008. Income declarations are checked annually by the Federal Tax Service and the Prosecutor General’s Office. READ MORE: Russians do not believe officials’ income declarations In 2013, the Russian president signed into law a bill banning senior state officials from holding bank accounts abroad or owning foreign-issued shares and bonds. The restriction also extends to spouses and underage children. The law allows state officials to own real estate abroad, but orders them to declare it, as well as the sources of income used to buy the property. Rusetskiy told Izvestia that since then, prosecutors have forwarded to courts 26 cases requiring the confiscation of 73 real estate sites and vehicles costing over 174 million rubles (US$2.6 million). However, the official noted that the defense in every situation offered staunch resistance, using every opportunity to appeal. As a result, only 22 items of property costing over 70 million rubles ($1 million) have been confiscated.

European Commission wants to suspend funding Spain & Portugal — RT Business The eurozone finance ministers decided this month to start sanctions procedures against the two countries for breaching EU spending rules. Sanctions could be a fine of up to 0.2 percent of a country's GDP and the suspension of commitments or payments from EU structural funds of up to 0.5 percent. European Commission Vice President Jyrki Katainen said "socio- economic factors," including the countries' high rates of unemployment, should be taken into account when deciding how much to suspend. "We remain at your disposal to participate in a structural dialogue with the European Parliament on the application of these measures, with a view to make a balanced proposal," Katainen said in a letter to the president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz. The letter also contained a list of 12 Portuguese and 60 Spanish funds that could be suspended, either completely or in part. Structural funds are used to address regional disparities within the bloc. German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble has also proposed the Commission completely or partially suspend structural funds for projects in 2017 as a penalty. Madrid and Lisbon are accused of not making “sufficient effort” to cut their budget deficits which, according to EU fiscal rules, should be no more than three percent of GDP. The criterion was introduced ahead of the euro launch in 1999 and so far no country has been penalized for breaking them. Spain was asked by Brussels to lower the deficit to 4.2 percent of GDP in 2015, from 5.9 percent in 2014, but the country ended up with a 5.1 percent shortfall instead. Portugal's shortfall was 4.4 percent last year, a drop from 7.2 percent in 2014 and from almost 10 percent in 2010. "There is no justification for imposing sanctions for not reaching a target in 2015, when the European Commission itself recognizes that we will reach this year's goal," said Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa. The country is aiming for a budget deficit fewer than three percent of GDP this year.

NSRI helps motorists trapped in flooded KZN "Emergency services have had a busy 24 hours. Starting with snow yesterday morning and then flooding in the afternoon and evening‚" Emergency Medical Services spokesman Robert Mckenzie said. Several rescues were performed when cars were washed away due to the flood waters and the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was called to assist police and emergencymedical services. "One such incident was on the south coast where a family of three were swept off a bridge. They had to swim several kilometres down river to find a place to safety get out of the water‚" Mckenzie said. Meanwhile‚ a 62-year-old woman who went missing during the torrential rains in Durban on Monday has still not been located. Private security company Reaction Unit SA's director Prem Balram said Brenda Lynn Scriven had been missing since 6pm on Monday. "Brenda's white GWM light motor vehicle was found at the bottom of Glen Anil Street in Glen Anil after it was stuck on a flooded road. She last made telephonic contact at 6pm and was not heard off since. " "Her phone‚ handbag and other personal belongings have been found‚" he said. Also on Monday‚ Crisis Medical paramedics reported that a car washed off the road in Durban at around 6pm. "A female of 39 years old was travelling down Ronaldo Road towards North Coast Road when she felt her vehicle lose control from underneath her‚" Crisis Medical said in a statement. Water gushing across the road caused the light motor vehicle to be swept off the roadway and down the embankment. "The driver being the only occupant of the vehicle‚ managed escape unharmed by climbing out of the driver’s side window‚" Crisis Medical said. The woman said she had to get out of the car. "I wanted to get out of the car because there was a river washing my car further into the bushes and I can't swim‚" she said. An eThekwini Fire and Rescue vehicle hauled the car out of the bushes. NSRI member Paul Bevis responded in his own vehicle to assist SAPS rescue personnel trapped in vehicles. He was then diverted to Umlaas Road in Umlazi to assist a young man and woman trapped on a small island in the middle of a river with the water level rising. On arrival‚ rescuers found a local wearing a personal floatation device had gone to help them. Bevis swam across the river and managed to swim them all back to safety‚ as debris floated all around them. Another NSRI member in his private vehicle‚ Lorenzo Tavern Turisan‚ assisted residents affected by flooding in Yellowood Park.

'I don't want to use 4-letter words': Russian FM slams reporter over DNC leak claims — RT News READ MORE: Kremlin: Idea of Russia’s involvement in US Democratic Party mail hack is 'absurd' He was speaking ahead of talks at the ASEAN summit in Laos. US Secretary of State John Kerry, who was present at the time, also seemed to feel uncomfortable with the reporter's question. Almost 20,000 emails and more than 8,000 attachments from the Democratic National Committee (DNC) were released by WikiLeaks on Friday. Many of the emails showed that major DNC officials were as hostile to the Bernie Sanders' campaign as opponents were. On Sunday, Clinton’s campaign manager, Robby Mook, claimed in an interview with CNN that “experts are telling us that Russian state actors broke into the DNC, stole these emails, and other experts are now saying that the Russians are releasing these emails for the purpose of actually helping Donald Trump.” When asked what kind of evidence he had to back up that theory, Mook answered: "Well, we need the experts speak on this. It's been reported on in the press that the hackers that got into the DNC are very likely to be working in coordination with Russia.” Donald Trump Jr., in his turn, slammed the theory, saying that Clinton campaigners “will say anything to be able to win.” “I mean this is time and time again, lie after lie. You notice he [Mook] won’t say, ‘Well, I say this.’ We hear ‘experts’. His house cat at home once said this is what’s happening with the Russians. It’s disgusting. It’s so phony,” he told CNN. Meanwhile, Donald Trump took to Twitter to joke about the allegations against Russia. WATCH MORE:

SABC board chair stung by ANC’s scathing criticism Professor Mbulaheni Maguvhe‚ chairman of the SABC board‚ accused the African National Congress’ (ANC) Jackson Mthembu - who on Tuesday said SABC managers had undermined the Constitution and changed policy without consultation – of launching a personal attack on chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng. Maguvhe said in a statement‚ responding to Mthembu’s scathing criticism: “It is unfortunate that the statement made by the chairperson of the subcommittee on communications of the ANC‚ Jackson Mthembu has resulted into a personal attack that suggests that Motsoeneng makes all decisions alone.” Motsoeneng has been engulfed in controversy for allegedly running the broadcaster like a dictator‚ was accused of lying about not having a matric qualification and was at the receiving end of a highly critical report by the public protector‚ which recommended disciplinary action be taken against him. The Times reported on Wednesday that that the ANC – in an about-turn after having previously defended Motsoeneng – said there was a lack of leadership at the SABC and that heads would roll. Maguvhe‚ however‚ was adamant that the “strategies that the COO and his team have put in place‚ and sanctioned by the board have worked for the organisation”. “These political tugs of war by different political parties are diversionary and intended to defocus the corporation from its mandate. We need to reiterate that we will not make any decisions that are aimed at censoring the news.” He went as far as suggesting there was some form of conspiracy at play: “We are also aware of people with business interests who want to see the organisation collapse in order to seize its commercial assets.” Maguvhe praised SABC managers for “all the good achievements including the recent introduction of prioritising local content”. “Those who are stating that the SABC should reverse it local content policy‚ do not want the SABC as a public service broadcaster to empower our own artists and production houses‚” said Maguvhe. The SABC‚ he said‚ was not censoring the news. “It should be noted that the decision is not to censor any violent protests but not to glamorise the act of burning public property‚” he said. The Times quoted a senior ANC member as saying: “This chaos is affecting our election campaign and we can't allow it to continue. How can our people trust the election results when the public broadcaster is censoring news? This goes to the heart of what we fought for and Mthembu has the support of the majority on this. "

There's no place to hide in Sevens rugby Five teams have strong hopes of winning the gold medal, and five others could beat them in any match. It will be, in my admittedly biased opinion, the highlight of the Games because the sport is so "volatile", the result so uncertain, often until the very final act of the match. I remember being concerned that Sevens' Olympic inclusion might actually undermine it. I was fortunate enough to work with Paul Treu during the maturation phase of our Sevens strategy from 2008 to 2012, and Rio 2016 was a variable we considered both a threat and an opportunity. The appeal of an Olympic medal meant that superstars from the major rugby nations might have swept in for the week of the Olympics, soaked up the spotlight, and then left again, leaving behind a version of the sport that was, by the arithmetic of casual observers, "lessened" by their transient appearance in it. Were that to happen, it would undermine the efforts made by Sevens teams in the intervening four years - it would be analogous to pulling your luxury sports car out of the garage for a weekend once every four years, then locking it away and hoping your four-door family sedan turned heads the same way. The only way to prevent this, we knew back then, was for Sevens to evolve enough that it became so specialised that the addition of even the best players from XVs would do little to the performance of teams. Sevens had to be too distinct to allow "rugby-hopping" to occur. My strong impression is that this has, in fact, happened. Or is happening. Yes, certain teams, including South Africa, have strengthened their squads with the targeted addition of international players, but anyone who thought they could throw XVs superstars onto a field of Sevens players and dominate has been exposed. The Blitzboks under Neil Powell formulated a calendar that gave them access to certain players in certain "windows" so they could adapt to the speed and technical nuances of the game. But even this process has "failed" more than it succeeded, and of the 10 or so players who came into the Blitzbok training environment, one, perhaps two, will make the final cut. Quade Cooper couldn't make the switch for Australia, and Sonny Bill Williams has been patchy for New Zealand, who have also added the Ioane brothers, and Liam Messam, but still rely heavily on their historical Sevens specialists. I'm now confident that Sevens requires a set of skills specific enough that any team that suddenly picks players, however stellar their reputation in XVs rugby, would be worse off. The transition is so difficult because Sevens is not simply a version of rugby lacking forward packs. Decision-making at rucks is at a premium because so much more space has to be covered per player. Agility and lateral mobility are more forensically examined (something that has affected Williams in particular), as are basic skills like passing to both sides and one-on-one tackling. The lack of space in XVs allows players with limitations to "hide", whereas such inadequacies are exposed in Sevens. This doesn't even consider the physical demands of Sevens - the ratio of sprints and fast running to rest is completely different, and few XVs players can handle it without a period of some adaptation. None of this is to say that Sevens is the finished article - no doubt the best XVs internationals would make exceptional Sevens players, given sufficient cross-over time. But the specialisation of Sevens is an encouraging sign, and the respect and recognition given to the Sevens specialists is growing, rightly, in proportion to the technical and tactical evolution of the sport. That this coincides with the commercial growth of Sevens, the expansion of the Series to 10 tournaments, means that Rio will be a leap forward, and the only threat now, at least to a South African observer, is that the sport evolves so quickly it leaves us behind.

Stop calling to 'lock up' Clinton, Sanders campaign manager tells Bernie's supporters — RT America "I know emotions are running high right now, but I think people really have to consider the implications of what a [Donald] Trump presidency would mean for those of us who support the kind of agenda that Bernie Sanders has laid out for the country," Jeff Weaver, who served as Sanders' campaign manager, told The Hill ahead of the Democratic National Convention (DNC) on Monday. Sanders, 74, was booed by some supporters after trying to convince them that Clinton must be elected in order to stop Trump. “We have got to defeat Donald Trump and we have got to elect Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine,” Sanders told a packed room of delegates before the opening of the convention in Philadelphia on Monday. “Brothers and sisters, this is the real world that we leave in... Trump is a bully and a demagogue,” he added. Supporters of the Vermont senator marched through the streets of Philadelphia on Sunday, chanting "Lock her up! " The phrase is Donald Trump’s favorite attack rhetoric against the Democratic nominee. Demonstrators also carried anti-Clinton banners and held “Hillary for Prison” signs. READ MORE: ‘RIGGED’: Trump slams DNC for ‘vicious plan to destroy’ Bernie exposed in WikiLeaks emails Many said they felt deceived following a WikiLeaks dump of nearly 20,000 DNC emails which indicated that the committee – supposedly the neutral governing organization of the Democratic Party – secretly strategized with the Clinton campaign and plotted against Sanders. “I feel like I’ve been cheated, I feel like my brothers and sisters have been cheated, and I feel like it’s all her fault,” Trevor Minter, one of the protesters calling for Clinton to be jailed, told the Guardian. He said he was furious over “all the classified emails she’s let out using her own servers and using her own personal email and then you have the WikiLeaks, all the going behind people’s backs.” Another protestor, Matt Schmidheiser, carried a homemade poster highlighting Clinton’s alleged crimes. “I think it’s accurate and I think she needs to be in prison for the rest of her life,” he told the paper. In early July, the FBI lifted a looming legal threat to Clinton's presidential campaign, deciding against pressing criminal charges for her handling of classified material in a private email account while serving as secretary of state. The FBI investigation has damaged the Democratic candidate’s approval ratings, however, according to a recent poll. The New York Times/CBS survey released earlier this month found that a majority of voters believe Clinton cannot be trusted, with 67 percent saying she is not honest or trustworthy – up from 62 percent last month. That figure represents the highest percentage in this election cycle.

Grade 10 text book outrage The Department of Basic Education has told the publisher of the Focus Life Orientation Grade 10 Learner's Book to amend or remove a question about how a girl's behaviour led to her rape. A Facebook post by Yonela Palesa Moopelwa, which included a photograph of the page in the book on which the question appears, was brought to the attention of The Times yesterday. A girl named Angie tells the reader that she went to a party without her parents' permission, got drunk and was raped. Pupils are then instructed to answer three questions, the first being: "List two ways in which Angie's behaviour led to sexual intercourse. " Moopelwa, in her post, said the topic was teaching children to justify rape. The department said the book had been in use at public schools since 2011 and had not elicited complaint until it was brought to its attention yesterday. Spokesman Elijah Mhlanga said it was unacceptable that pupils were being led to believe that rapists were drawn to rape by the behaviour of their victims. "The question raises very serious questions, such as misconceptions and stereotypes surrounding rape and the relationship between perpetrator and victim; and that the victim might have played a role that led to her being raped," he said. Mhlanga, however, added that specialists who evaluated the material could not at this stage be blamed. Gender activist Lisa Vetten said the question not only laid blame on rape victims and ignored the culpability of perpetrators, it confused the concept of rape by referring to it as "sexual intercourse". She said the issue emphasised the importance of having knowledgeable people writing and teaching about gender-based violence. "This also questions the level of quality control that went into the book. It is worrying that no subject teachers had identified the problem," said Vetten. Educational psychologist Kobus Maree said the content risked causing rape victims more trauma, believing it was their fault.

Kaizer, Iron Duke show maturity He was addressing the unrest among United fans, the privileged millions who have little idea of what it is to have "a couple of years on the quiet side of success" (the last piece of silverware was the 2013 season- opening Community Shield). What a shot in the arm, then, for incumbent Louis van Gaal (who was tasked with righting Moyes' wrongs), to have Fergie, a demigod in European football and the man who was at the helm for 26-and-a-half years; the man who brought unprecedented success to the club, earning himself post-retirement statues, a stand at Old Trafford named after him and a series of business masterclasses at Harvard University, to fight in his corner. There aren't too many right now. It has been particularly refreshing, then, to see that our two biggest clubs - Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates - who have been overshadowed by Mamelodi Sundowns this season, take a more mature view of their current struggles than their restless followers. Kaizer Motaung could have listened to the outcry over Chiefs' two cup final defeats under coach Steve Komphela - and early exits from the CAF Champions League and the Nedbank Cup at the hands of Orlando Pirates - and axed Komphela less than 10 months into the job. With a lack of obvious candidates strong enough to assume the massive role of head coach at Naturena, Motaung would presumably have turned to club icon Doctor Khumalo to see out the rest of the season; like Ryan Giggs after Moyes' sacking. Giggs had the benefit of learning under Ferguson (who has mentioned that Giggs would have been his successor had he retired earlier) and carried on the philosophy the club has been known for for decades. Khumalo wouldn't have enjoyed a similar education, even though he has worked with Championship-winning Stuart Baxter. Motaung's statements this week were the absolute antithesis of the modern- day rhetoric about sacking coaches at the earliest possible opportunity. "Our supporters take it too far, instead of giving the coach time. In fact, when the team is not doing well that's when you want the supporters rallying behind them. "If you are a chairman of a club, you must act like a leader. A leader must not be lost with the crowd, otherwise the whole thing collapses," argued the boss. Of course the same stance does not apply to the country's prevailing political climate; ahem, Mr Gwede Mantashe. Nor did it apply to the impasse at Chelsea during the first third of the English Premier League, when Jose Mourinho seemed to be burning bridges with all and sundry at Stamford Bridge. Situations vary. Motaung acknowledged that Amakhosi will have to be content with playing bridesmaid this time around, and that the squad needs sprucing up, with a few of the players on the wrong side of 30. That's leadership. And as clueless as Van Gaal and United's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward seem to be when it comes to recruitment policy, look at how the introduction of youngsters such as Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard et al, have brought some feel-good back to Old Trafford. The Iron Duke at Orlando Pirates appears to be taking a similar approach to the Kaizer, trusting Eric Tinkler to lay foundations for future success. One hopes this is a sign that people are finally using their brains rather than bowing to the howling of the fans.

Survivor JP has seen it all, at just 33 The integrity of their defence has been shaped by JP Ferreira who has seen far more than you'd expect for a 33-year-old. Yesterday, defence coach Ferreira, preparing the Lions for Saturday's semifinal against the Highlanders, was asked about his career that has had more twists and turns than a Hitchcock thriller. "I started here in 2007. In 2009 when Eugene Eloff told me that he had been fired it was a little distressing because my contract was linked to his," he said matter-of-factly. Ferreira was spared the axe and went on to outlast Hans Coetzee and Jake White, then Dick Muir and later John Mitchell. "I learnt a lot from all those coaches. I have a lot to learn. " The Lions don't have the sturdiest defence but they have held their defence lines when it really mattered, which helps explain their second-place finish on the Super rugby points table. With a better fortified defensive line this season, the Lions have been able to indulge their attacking instincts. "The players don't play to win. They play to score tries," said chief executive Rudolf Straeuli. It is a script from which they are unlikely to deviate in the semifinal. In fact, for them nothing changes even with the higher stakes this weekend. "They are very relaxed," said coach Johan Ackermann. Some of the Lions' aerial skills let them down last weekend. Lineouts went astray, as did a high ball, which resulted in a Crusaders try. The Highlanders also use high ball so the Lions will be watchful. "You have to be aware of that," said coach Ackermann. "The balance Ben Smith strikes between kicking and running is good. You have to know what you are doing. "

Downs can smell semis Should they beat Zamalek tonight at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, they will ensure themselves the top spot in Group B with a game in hand. They have six points from their two matches, thanks to respective 2-1 home and away wins against Enyimba and Zamalek. The White Knights are still in a position to qualify due to their 2-1 away win against Enyimba but they will have to rely on beating the Nigerian giants in their final home game to secure their spot. A draw for Sundowns will seal the deal but the importance of topping the group is not lost on Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane. It will guarantee them the safety of playing the second leg of their semifinal at home. "This game feels like the league clash against Tuks where we knew if we won the game, we'd be wrapping up the league. We know what we need to do and an early goal will make us relax and approach the game better. I also get the feeling they [Zamalek] are unsettled because I think they expected to have it easy, and we won in Egypt," Mosimane said. "They know they're skating on thin ice and it's not going to be easy for them. They'll have one more game at home to Enyimba. A point will eliminate Enyimba from this game because I don't see Zamalek losing to Enyimba. We need to be at our best against Zamalek so we show what we can do with teams like them. We also want to be number one. " Sundowns will be without Tiyani Mabunda and Wayne Arendse for accumulated yellow cards - but that is the least of their worries. With the league programme starting at the end of August along with the Telkom Knockout Cup and the MTN8, burnout could become a factor. Mosimane did not try to get ahead of himself but knows his players will have plenty of football mileage when the extended break arrives in December. "Chances are we will play 27 matches before the break when you factor in the league and the various knockout games and there could be players who will have played 35 games by December. "We need to have enough players with decent breaks but also looking at quality players," Mosimane said.

Ombudsman Morales leads 2016 Ramon Magsaysay Awardees Six esteemed Asian leaders, including the country’s own Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales, are this year’s Ramon Magsaysay Awardees, the Philippines-based prestigious award-giving body announced on Wednesday. The Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize recognizes individuals who have excelled in government service, public service and community leadership. The 75-year-old Ombudsman was lauded for her “moral courage and commitment to justice in taking head-on one of the most intractable problems of the Philippines; promoting by her example of incorruptibility, diligence, vision and leadership the highest ethical standards in public service.” The Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) announced the other awardees including Dompet Dhuafa, an Indonesian philanthropic organization, which fosters economic projects from zakat (Islamic obligatory taxes); Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers, a youth-led group providing Japanese humanitarian aid and assistance in developing countries; and Vientiane Rescue, an emergency rescue organization manning public safety in Laos. Two Indians are also hailed by the award-giving body: anti-manual scavenging activist Bezwada Wilson and musician Thodur Madabusi Krishna, who is an awardee for Emergent Leadership. READ: Ombudsman Conchita Carpio-Morales wins Ramon Magsaysay Award RMAF President Carmencita Abella said the 2016 awards will be a milestone for aspiring leaders to create social good in the Asian region. “Clearly, they are creating bold solutions to deeply rooted social problems in their respective societies, problems which are most damaging to the lives of those trapped in poverty, ignorance, prejudice, and unjust systems,” she said. She added: “While the respective social causes and leadership solutions are uniquely their own, there is one thing this year’s Magsaysay laureates all share in common: a greatness of spirit that infuses their crusade of change.” The announcement coincided with the foundation’s launching of the Asian Leaders Talk, an initiative drawn from the incredible success of TED talks, and its newly overhauled website, rmaward.asia . Makati Business Club and RMAF chair Ramon Del Rosario said the award bestowed on Morales would inspire other public servants to selflessly desire to help the underprivileged. “In the case of awardees who are incumbent officials, it would inspire them to do their work with more courage and dedication,” he added. The Ramon Magsaysay Awards, which honors the late Philippine President who died in a plane crash, has recognized 312 prodigious and brilliant laureates since 1957. The highest number of awardees, totaling 55, comes from India. The Philippines comes second with 47 awardees and Japan third with 24. Other Filipino Magsaysay laureates include Washington SyCip, founder of SGV & Co., and former senator and Presidential candidate Miriam Defensor-Santiago. The 2016 awardees will each receive a certificate, a medallion and a cash prize. The formal awarding ceremony will be held on Monday, Aug. 31, at the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

House divided: Two solons battle to become leader of losers There are two congressmen in the 17th Congress claiming to be the winner in the game of losers. On one side is Quezon Rep. Danilo Suarez, a member of the United Nationalist Alliance, who was elected minority leader in a meeting of minority members Wednesday morning. READ: Suarez — Binay ally — elected House minority leader On the other is Ifugao Rep. Teddy Baguilat, a member of the erstwhile ruling Liberal Party, who slammed the Suarez-led minority bloc as a sham, “fake” minority and dubbed himself as the “authentic” minority leader. The mess in the minority race stemmed from the elections for Speaker when the second place behind the winning Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez went to Baguilat with eight votes, followed by Suarez with seven. This would have automatically put Baguilat as minority leader as per tradition and House rules that the second placer is automatically the minority leader. But Majority Floor Leader Ilocos Norte Rep. Rodolfo Farinas, a new member of President Rodrigo Duterte’s Partido Demokratikong Pilipino- Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban), insisted that according to the rules, the minority leader would be elected by members of the minority bloc or those lawmakers who did not vote for and abstained from voting for the winning Speaker. With numbers on his side, Suarez handily won the minority elections among the 39 members who both abstained and did not vote for the winning Speaker. In a press conference after the elections, Baguilat called the move “garapalan” (shameless) for the majority-led coalition to control what could have been an opposition bloc in the House of Representatives. The Liberal Party stalwart who did not join the LP contingent that joined the majority coalition said he would continue his plan to become a “fiscalizer” in Congress. It was Baguilat who filed a resolution seeking a congressional probe on the spate of summary killings of suspected criminals at the height of Duterte’s war on drugs. READ: Look into extrajudicial killings under Duterte, Congress pressed “In summary, garapalan itong nangyayari (this is a shameless move). Balik tayo sa dating plano na itutuloy natin ang ating tungkulin na maging fiscalizer (I will go back to my previous plan to continue my role as a fiscalizer),” Baguilat said. “We are the real and genuine minority and we will be the conscience of this Congress,” he added. READ: Baguilat cries foul over game fixing in minority leader elections In the press briefing, Baguilat’s ally Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman said Alvarez’s majority bloc not only established a “super majority” by entering into coalition agreements with several political parties; the administration coalition was also able to control the minority bloc by “lending” some of its members to the minority to install Suarez as minority leader. Lagman said Suarez is clearly an ally of Duterte, and was even a co-author in some of Alvarez’s pieces of legislations consistent with Duterte’s legislative agenda, such as the restoration of death penalty and the grant of Duterte’s emergency powers to resolve the traffic congestion. Suarez’s minority leadership would ensure that the minority bloc would be cooperative instead of being the opposition in the chamber dominated by administration allies. “Garapalan ang ginawa nila. Hawak na nila ang supermajority, ang majority hawak pa rin ang minority (It was a shameless move. [The administration] controls the supermajority and the majority also controls the minority)!” Lagman said. Lagman maintained that the 20 lawmakers who abstained cannot be members of the minority but should be the independent bloc of Congress. And yet these lawmakers joined the elections on Wednesday that propelled Suarez, an ally of former Vice President Jejomar Binay, to the minority post. Lagman said the “fake” minority “bastardized” the selection process for minority leader. “We feel disappointed that the process of selecting the minority leader has been bastardized, a coopted minority leader has been chosen by renegade groups of abstentions who are not even members of the minority,” said Lagman, a member of the Liberal Party. Northern Samar Rep. Raul Daza also minced no words in hitting the minority bloc, which he said might as well be a part of the coalition of traditional politicians in Congress. “Super ang majority dahil pati ang minority, nilikha nila na maging bahagi ng kanilang super majority (The majority is super because they also control the minority, which they created to be a part of their super majority). They have created the majority and now it’s clear that they are creating a minority within the super majority,” said Daza, a Liberal stalwart. “Tawagin na rin natin silang ‘super trapos’ (They can also be called ‘super traditional politicians’),” he added. In his speech after his election, Suarez vowed to lead a cooperative and constructive minority bloc and maintained that his election as minority leader was legitimate and a result of the numbers game in Congress. 38 Kerry says arbitral ruling ‘impossible to be irrelevant’ MANILA, Philippines — Even while China continues to ignore an international court’s decision invalidating its nine-dash line claim over the South China Sea in favor of the Philippines, countries involved in the dispute at the West Philippine Sea and South China Sea areas may not be able to disregard it eventually. United States Secretary of State John Kerry made this statement as he reiterated the call against provocations in the disputed waters and for respect for freedom of navigation— a key aspect of his agenda as the first Foreign Secretary to come to the Philippines under the new administration. “It’s impossible for it to be irrelevant. It’s legally binding… And it’s obviously a decision of a court that’s recognized under international law. It has to be part of the calculation,” Kerry said in a joint presser with Foreign Affairs Secretary Perfecto Yasay Jr. following a bilateral meeting Wednesday morning. “I’m confident that our friends in the Philippines will make their judgments, what their negotiating position is and how they intend to proceed forward,” he said. He reiterated earlier statements of the United States considering the July 12 ruling of the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague, a historic victory for the Philippines, as “legally binding and that we expect parties will comply with their obligations on the law.” “We (the United States) are not a claimaint and the US does not take a position on the competing claims in the South China Sea. But we do take a strong position on protecting the rights, the freedoms, the lawful uses of air and sea space as defined by international law. We take a strong position in support for the rule of law,” he said. “The rights of all countries under the law should always be respected. That is why international law is valued. At the same time — and I wanna be equally clear about this — we urge all the claimants to exercise restraint and to work to reduce tensions,” he said. Without making reference to any particular claimant country, Kerry expressed the US hope for a diplomatic solution “without coercion or the use and threat of force.” China has continued to ignore the arbitral ruling after refusing to participate in the legal proceedings. It has continued its occupation, militarization and reclamation of features in the South China Sea. SFM

New Nintendo console a tablet and TV console in one With no concrete data yet as to the release date of the Nintendo NX console, a new information gathered said that it will indeed be a hybrid device of sorts. Wired reported that the Nintendo NX woud be a combination of a TV-based console and a portable gaming machine. It would be equipped with an NVIDIA Tegra chip, which also runs NVIDIA’s Shield line of Android gaming devices. While most information regarding the NX is still speculative, having a hybrid device would make for a good move for Nintendo. Nintendo is still fairly strong in the handheld device market, despite the growing popularity of mobile gaming. Its home console figures, however, are not as strong. But to have a single device with which to access Nintendo’s game library would be a boon for both developers and gamers alike. While the Tegra chip may not be as powerful and produce cutting-edge graphics as, say, a Playstation 4 or Xbox One, it should be good enough to allow users to enjoy one of Nintendo’s most awaited game, Zelda: Breath of the Wild. 41 Income Tax raid at AAP legislator Kartar Singh Tanwar's residence in Delhi New Delhi: The officials of the Income Tax department on Wednesday morning conducted a raid at AAP legislator Kartar Singh Tanwar's residence in south Delhi, a party leader said. "Just in: Income Tax raid on Chhatarpur MLA Kartar Singh Tanwar. Modiji had unleashed Central Bureau of Investigation, Anti- Corruption Bureau, Delhi Police earlier, now IT too, Aam Aadmi Party won't bow down, won't bend," Dilip Pandey said in a tweet. "Disheartened by past performance, Modiji seems to be improving his strike rate now. Almost an AAP MLA everyday, to keep democratic principles away," the leader said in another tweet. Referring to the raid, another party leader Sanjay Singh said AAP legislators were being targeted by the Modi government everyday. "AAP MLA Tanwar's number came today (Wednesday) morning, let's see who is targeted till evening," a sarcastic Singh tweeted. "Are so many consistent attacks on AAP justified? Are all the criminals of the country in the AAP? " Singh asked. The raid on Tanwar's residence will add fuel to the already bitter political war between the AAP and the Modi government. About a dozen AAP legislators have either been arrested or facing charges in various cases since the party took charge in Delhi on February 14 last year.

Neymar defends his party boy lifestyle Brazilian football star Neymar is a party boy and he’s not going to apologize for it. At a sometimes tense press conference on Tuesday at the facility where Brazil’s Olympic football team is training for the Rio Games, the Barcelona striker told reporters he would not change his ways. “I’m 24 years old. (…) I have my faults, I’m not perfect. I like to go out and have fun with my friends. Why shouldn’t I go out and party? I don’t see why not,” Neymar said at the training camp in Teresopolis, outside Rio. Growing increasingly irritated, the Barcelona star went on: “I really don’t see the problem. It’s my private life. On the pitch, I always give everything I have.” One of the journalists had asked Neymar how invested he was in the national team, given a recent spate of suspensions and the fact that he went out clubbing after a 2-2 draw with Uruguay in the 2018 World Cup qualifying rounds — a match that saw him earn a yellow card. Directly addressing the journalist, he said: “If you were 24… wouldn’t you be the same way? I’m asking you.” Last week, Brazil’s Olympic coach Rogerio Micale surprised some when he said: “I want to be dependent on Neymar.” The next day, national coach Tite — who will take over the Selecao after the Olympics — warned against putting too much pressure on Neymar, saying it was “inhuman to put all the responsibility on one person.” Brazil, a five-time World Cup champion that has never won Olympic gold, has struggled recently to escape accusations of being a one-man team with little threat beyond its Barcelona star. When asked about Micale’s comment, Neymar compared himself to Argentina star Lionel Messi, his Barcelona teammate. “We have great players, and wouldn’t we say that we rely on Messi? Of course we rely on him. We rely on the best players.” Brazil’s Olympic squad will play a friendly against Japan on Saturday in Goiania. The team is in Group A with South Africa, Denmark and Iraq.

Maliksi, Juico, several PCSO execs sued for deals sans bids MANILA — Graft charges were filed Wednesday against former and incumbent officials of the Philippine Charities and Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), including its chair Erineo Maliksi and his predecessor Margarita Juico, over the extension of contracts for the lease of lottery terminals without public bidding. The Anti-Trapo Movement of the Philippines (ATM) filed the complaint in the Office of the Ombudsman alleging irregularities in the renewal of contracts awarded to Philippine Gaming and Management Corp. (PGMC) and Pacific Online Systems Corp. (POSC), in March and August 2015, respectively. PCSO, according to the complaint, has been leasing the equipment from the two companies for its operations, including lotto and small-town lottery, since 1995. ATM chair Leon Peralta said there was “dubious conduct and motive” in the actions of the officials in extending the lease contracts for the two companies without the benefit of a public bidding. In an interview, he said he was not aware of how much the contracts cost the government, but knew for a fact that the equipment contracts had already expired at least twice. “What we’re saying is that upon expiration, the contracts should have been rebid,” he told reporters. The complaint stated that “the technology used by PGMC and PSOC is not exclusively distributed or owned by said lessors but readily available and used by other companies, thus other entities can offer better pricing or more advanced technology better suited for the security and efficiency of lotto operations in the country.” It said the extension of the contracts for the two companies was grossly disadvantageous to the government and patently violated several provisions of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practices Act. The complainant said Maliksi had acted “in connivance and conspiracy” with members of the PCSO’s bids and awards committee. Asked why Juico was included in the complaint, Peralta said: “The first renewal was still under Juico, and the next one was upon Maliksi’s assumption of office.” Juico resigned in May 2014, but Maliksi was appointed by former President Benigno Aquino III to replace her only in April 2015. Also named respondents were PCSO general manager Jose Ferdinand Rojas II, assistant general manager Conrado Zabella, PCSO board members Florencio Noel, Betty Nantes, Mabel Mamba, and Francisco Joaquin III, and members of the PCSO’s bids and awards committee. The complainant also sought the preventive suspension of Maliksi and the other sitting officials pending the Ombudsman’s investigation into the case, and subsequently, their removal from office, and disqualification from holding public office. 45 Boston Boy Found Dead After Wandering Away From Summer Camp Police are trying to determine how an 8- year-old boy wandered away unnoticed from a city-run summer camp at a Boston beach and ended up dead, his body found five hours later in the water. "This is the worst part of our job. Dealing with a tragic death like this," Boston Police Commissioner William Evans told reporters at a Tuesday evening news conference. Kyzr Willis was last seen around 2 p.m. Tuesday near the L Street Bathhouse at Carson Beach in the city's South Boston neighborhood. Willis was attending a day camp at the Curley Community Center, which includes the bathhouse, police said. "Right away we deployed officers from around the city looking for the young child. We checked the water, we checked the shoreline, we were out in neighborhoods, we checked the area around his home in Dorchester, Evans said. "We searched the best we could. " Police found the boy's body around 7 p.m. Family and friends who had rushed to Carson Beach when they heard the child was missing, broke down in tears. It was not immediately clear how the boy slipped away from the camp, which is run by the Boston Centers for Youth and Families. "We'll conduct a thorough investigation, but right now, let's all pray for the family. They're going through something that I don't think anyone here wants to go through," Evans said. Boston Mayor Martin J. Walsh, who was returning home from the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, released a statement Tuesday night. "I will be working closely with Boston Centers for Youth and Families and the Boston Police Department until we know exactly what happened," Walsh said, adding that his thoughts and prayers are with the Willis family. Quincy police, state police and the U. S. Coast Guard all assisted in the search. The bathhouse will remain closed until further notice as police continue to investigate.

Inside Tesla's ginormous Gigafactory This is the Gigafactory , where Tesla plans to build enough lithium ion batteries to catapult Tesla's electric vehicles into the mainstream. It will be about 5.8 million square feet when completed around 2020. Tesla believes that the adoption of electric vehicles has been hampered by the high cost of lithium batteries , so it plans to use this factory to drastically boost production. The factory currently has almost 2 million square feet of space on several floors -- and the structure is only 14% complete. "I think the Gigafactory has to be the most exciting factory in the world," Musk said of the project. By 2020, Tesla ( TSLA ) hopes to be producing more batteries at this one factory than were produced in the entire world in 2014. With that flood of batteries, Tesla says it can drive down their cost by over 30%. For now, Tesla is only assembling battery packs for its home and industrial energy storage products at this factory. The batteries themselves are not being made here yet. Workers are assembling batteries made in Japan into battery packs that then go into Tesla's Powerwall and Powerpack products. By the end of this year Tesla plans to have its battery partner, Panasonic, making the actual battery cells here. Panasonic and Tesla will each operate parts of the facility which will exist as a single huge building. Panasonic will make battery cells, and Tesla will assemble those cells into battery packs. It's Tesla's building, though. Tesla is even building it itself rather than hiring an outside contractor. The plant is strategically located about five hours from Tesla's Fremont, California, factory. That's where the car batteries will be fitted into Tesla's new Model 3 sedans. The lower cost batteries produced here will be crucial for keeping the Model 3's price down to a relatively affordable $35,000 base price. By 2018, Tesla hopes to make enough battery packs here to build 500,000 of the cars each year. The original plan had been to reach that goal by 2020 but Tesla pulled that goal forward by two years speeding up construction on parts of the factory and bringing and installing equipment earlier. By 2020, Tesla now expects to be producing enough of the packs each year to support 1.5 million cars per year. A large part of the battery production will go, not into cars, but into so-called stationary power storage, a business that Musk expects to grow even faster than the electric vehicle business. Inside, the Gigafactory building is braced throughout with huge red reinforced Xs of strong earthquake resistant bracing. Despite the fact that it will be one contiguous lozenge-shaped building, the Gigafactory is being built as series of separate structures as further protection against catastrophic earthquake damage. Although the building is a full four stories tall there are, in some places, only two or three actual floors -- which allows room for tall machines, some of them dozens of feet high. Musk said he can get emotional thinking about this giant battery factory. "I think it's quite romantic, actually," he said. When finished it will be shaped almost like a diamond with one end pointed toward true north. Also, it's nestled in a valley through which thousands of wild horses roam in the desert heat.

N. Korea Floats Propaganda Leaflets in River for 1st Time South Korea on Wednesday accused rival North Korea of floating propaganda leaflets down a river in the first such incident. South Korea's military discovered dozens of plastic bags, each carrying about 20 leaflets, near the estuary of Seoul's Han River close to the tense Korean border last Friday, according to the South's Defense Ministry. Seoul is only an hour's drive from the border. The leaflets contained threats to launch missile attacks and a repeat of the North's long-running propaganda such as that the North won the 1950-53 Korean War , a ministry official said, requesting anonymity because of department rules. The war ended with no one's victory. An armistice that stopped the fighting has yet to be replaced with a peace treaty, leaving the Korean Peninsula split along the world's most heavily fortified border and at a technical state of war. Wednesday marks the 63rd anniversary of the armistice's signing. North Korean recently warned of unspecified "physical" measures in response to a U. S. plan to deploy an advanced missile defense system in South Korea by the end of next year. North Korea last week fired three ballistic missiles into the sea, according to Seoul defense officials. The rival Koreas resumed old-fashioned, Cold War-era psychological warfare in the wake of North Korea's fourth nuclear test in January. Seoul began blasting anti-Pyongyang propaganda broadcasts and K-pop songs from border loudspeakers in retaliation for the North's atomic detonation. Pyongyang quickly matched Seoul's campaign with its own border broadcasts and launches of balloons carrying anti-South leaflets across the border. The latest discovery of propaganda leaflets marks the first time for North Korea to use a river to send leaflets, according to the South Korean defense official. He said North Korea is believed to have used a river because the direction of wind isn't favorable in the summer to fly propaganda balloons from north to south. Many in South Korea believe their broadcasts could sting in Pyongyang because the rigidly controlled, authoritarian country worries that the broadcasts will demoralize front-line troops and residents and eventually weaken the grip of absolute leader Kim Jong Un. Nearly 30,000 North Koreans have fled to South Korea since the end of the Korean War, mostly for political and economic reasons. South Koreans defecting to the impoverished, authoritarian North is highly unusual.

Three Thai Activists Charged With Criminal Defamation Three Thai human rights activists have been charged with criminal defamation over a report that detailed alleged systematic torture inside military enclosures in the country's southern provinces. All three denied the charges and were freed Wednesday without having to post bail. They were freed on the condition they submit detailed testimony to the lead investigator in the case, explaining circumstances around the study they wrote. They have about two months to submit the report so the investigator can decide whether to go ahead with the case, said one the activists' lawyers, Preeda Nakphew from the Cross Cultural Foundation advocacy group. The charges involve a report the three issued alleging torture by security forces in Thailand's southern provinces, where a Muslim insurgency has lasted more than a decade. If convicted they face up to five years in jail. Amnesty International has called on Thai authorities to drop the charges and instead investigate the allegations in the report. The report issued in February described acts of torture in the southern provinces as systematic and said that in spite of complaints and campaigns by victims and rights organizations, "the state has not taken any significant action to prevent and address torture. " Government spokesman Winthai Suvaree said in response to their report that there was no evidence to support the allegations. In a separate case, the niece of an army conscript who was tortured to death by soldiers was released on bail early Wednesday after being arrested a day earlier on a complaint filed by a military officer over her internet postings. She was taken to the province of Narathiwat, 800 kilometers (500 miles) south of Bangkok late Tuesday night, where she denied the charges. She was let out on bail early Wednesday. Naritsarawan Kaewnopparat posted photos last year of her uncle's body and information about the torture he endured. She was arrested at her workplace in Bangkok on charges of criminal defamation and violating the Computer Crime Act. The military officer behind the defamation suit against Naritsarawan was one of the 10 army officers involved in the torture of her uncle. Military personnel are rarely prosecuted for human rights abuses or other crimes in Thailand, and the military government that seized power in May 2014 has clamped down on free speech. Naritsarawan won 7 million baht ($200,000) compensation in a malfeasance suit against the army, the defense ministry and the prime minister's office, but the actual perpetrators went unpunished. The army's own investigation concluded Wichian Puaksorn was tortured by about 10 soldiers as punishment when he tried to run away a second time from his camp in Narathiwat province in 2011. It said a first lieutenant gave the order and that Wichian was kicked, beaten and dragged across concrete; salt was rubbed in his wounds before he was wrapped in a sheet and beaten again.

UK economy grows by 0.6% The UK economy grew 0.6% in the three months to the end of June, a period that ended one week after the vote to leave the European Union. Growth in gross domestic product was stronger than expected in the quarter, and was up from 0.4% growth in the previous three months, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) said . Any uncertainty ahead of the referendum seemed to have a "limited" effect, the ONS said. On an annual basis, growth was 2.2%. ONS chief economist Joe Grice said: "Continued strong growth across services, particularly in retailing, reinforced by healthy growth in the manufacture of cars and pharmaceuticals, boosted output in the second quarter. "Any uncertainties in the run- up to the referendum seem to have had a limited effect. Very few respondents to ONS surveys cited such uncertainties as negatively impacting their businesses. " This is the first estimate of second-quarter economic activity and is based on less than half the data that will give the eventual figure.

The politics of a martial arts book fair in Hong Kong Martial arts is the theme of a book fair coming to a close in Hong Kong. But in the city home to the five booksellers detained by China for trading in controversial texts there had to be some politics on display, reports Tzu-Wei Liu of BBC Chinese. A book fair in a convention centre in Hong Kong's Wanchai district. Some people here are perusing books on acrobatics. Others are here for contraband politics. Ever since five booksellers disappeared last year, only to surface in detention in China, the spotlight has fallen on to Hong Kong's many publishing houses that produce copious amounts of gossip about China's political leaders as well as other works banned in the mainland. The theme for this year's book fair was martial arts. But this is Hong Kong, and politics was still on display, although publishers acknowledged that because of the bookseller controversy, there were fewer such books this year. One political book was so sensitive it had to be written in secret and smuggled out of China. And no Hong Kong publisher was willing to print the book - so it was eventually published in June by human rights organisations in Taiwan. The book was by prominent Chinese dissident and rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, and was titled: Stand Up China 2017 - China's Hope: What I Learned During Five Years as a Political Prisoner. In it, Mr Gao describes how he was allegedly tortured by the Chinese government. He was released from prison in August 2014 but remains under virtual house arrest. Mr Gao's is exactly the sort of book China doesn't want appearing on the mainland. A human rights lawyer from Guangdong, Fu Ailing, told me she bought several books from a book store in Hong Kong, including Mr Gao's. But they were confiscated by customs officials in Guangzhou on 21 July, who had detected the books when they x-rayed her backpack. Local authors aren't afraid to be controversial either. A new book whose title translates as Hong Kong's New Political Vocabulary is a "dictionary" featuring about 150 new Chinese words made up by the authors. The authors argue that recent social movements such as the pro- democracy Occupy Central protests have created a new, more defiant language in Hong Kong. Because Chinese characters are pictographs, the authors replaced the components of existing Chinese characters to give them complex new meanings. For example, one character they've created combines the word for "country" (国) with two iterations of the word for "system" (制) - in reference to the "One Country, Two Systems" agreement under which Hong Kong is governed. And their creativity seems to have paid off - this book was one of those that proved popular at the fair. Such overtly political books are a minority at the fair - and not everyone is a fan of them. One visitor to the fair, a Mr Wang from mainland China's Sichuan province, said he was not there for the banned books. "Some contents in the banned books were fake," he said, adding that only those based on history were worth reading. However, he did admit he had taken banned books back to mainland China for his friends in the past. For many, this fair was just about the literature of martial arts - and its a genre that unites Chinese readers of different political stripes. Sze Yan Ngai, the man who produced "Gulong Online", Hong Kong's first martial arts online game, told me that "martial arts literature is a common language for the Chinese speaking world". He did not think the growing tension between China and Hong Kong or Taiwan would affect people's love of the genre. Instead, he argued, the universal themes of martial arts appealed to everybody, because they depicted a world where justice and integrity could conquer evil. And, aside from martial arts, perhaps the standout star of the fair was "Brother Cream" - Hong Kong's most famous cat. "Brother Cream", who used to be based at a local convenience store, went missing in 2012. He made headlines after he was found safely 26 days later - and became a social media celebrity. Now he has over 43,800 followers on Instagram and his own PR manager - so perhaps it's not surprising that one of the most popular books on sale was his biography. Hundreds of fans lined up to take photos with him - because it was his first appearance after retiring from being a "shop manager" at his local convenience store this year.

Inside the UK's biggest prison By the end of this year, HMP Oakwood in Staffordshire will be the largest prison in the UK, with more than 2,000 inmates. Run by private firm G4S, Oakwood's reputation was dented in 2014 when a wing in the prison was taken over by inmates. Sima Kotecha has been inside. This jail is big. From a distance, it looks like a warehouse. But close up, the high fences and barbed wire project an image of incarceration. The site covers 50 acres and has two workshops, one the size of a football pitch. Through security and the first set of large iron gates, we are presented with five housing blocks, or wings, as they are referred to in jail-speak. The three largest wings house more than 400 prisoners. By the end of this year, this jail will be the largest in the country with more than 2,100 prisoners. Currently there are just over 1,600. As the inmates make their way around the estate, they stop to talk. Many are quick to tell us how much they like the prison, including one who is inside for supplying class A drugs. He said: "In my cell I have a toilet and a sink, a TV, somewhere to put my pictures. It's fantastic for a prison, it's really up to date. " HMP Oakwood is one of five prisons in the UK managed by G4S and the company has been battling reputational damage since a part of this prison was taken over by inmates a couple of years ago. This resulted in the jail being branded by its critics as Jokewood, a name that stuck with the media. So what is the team doing differently, if anything, to move away from that image? The staff who work here say its unique approach is based on prisoners helping prisoners to rehabilitate, and that is done through an enhanced mentoring scheme. There is also a health and legal service on site run by inmates who have relevant qualifications so that they are able to help and advise prisoners with any problems. The prison has a no surname policy here: both staff and inmates use first names only to create an informal environment. But not everybody agrees with a friend-like relationship between wardens and inmates. A middle aged man who is doing time for sex offences told us such an attitude was bound to lead to more violence. "Personally I don't find it helpful to call them by their first names because I think that's almost too familiar, there is a potential breakdown in the barrier between authority and prisoner and I've seen where it's got out of control because of that. " he said. In his 2015 report into HMP Oakwood, the chief inspector of prisons said levels of violence had reduced and that the use of mentoring was impressive. But he also said incidents of self-harm were high and that illicit drugs were easily available. Violence behind bars has been an ongoing problem on a national scale with more than 20,000 assaults recorded over the last year in England and Wales. Across the lawn from Ash wing, which houses mostly sex offenders and those deemed vulnerable, a prisoner collects rubbish. He was on what is known as a basic regime, when privileges such as TVs in your cell and family visits are taken away as a form of punishment for bad behaviour. He rushed up to me to complain about life at Oakwood. "It's all about profit here. Private prisons benefit prisons more and don't help the prisoners because it's about making money," he said. "In a public prison, there is more of a routine and staff who are experienced. Here everyone is young and they don't know what they're doing. " I put that question to the G4S management team, is profit the main objective here? Managing Director Jerry Petherick replied: "I never put profit before taking care of the prisoners. " It is arguably an easy answer to give but some of the prisoners we spoke to were worried that a desire to make cash was driving the management to take more inmates. "We're already seeing resources being stretched because more prisoners are coming in," one prisoner told us. "And it's only going to get worse as the numbers go up. And that could lead to more disorder. " A prisoner serving a life sentence for murder disagreed. He believe that larger prisons like this one give the inmates more independence to take part in the various projects and workshops on offer. He said: "I think we've been given a bit more freedom in here and trust to start the projects. "The project we run is a basic intervention group which is not running anywhere else in the country, but in fact all the prison governors are visiting us now to try and copy what we're doing here up and down the country in every other prison. " Of course incarceration is not supposed to be a five star experience. But campaigners argue most prisoners will be released and that some form of affective rehabilitation in jail could prevent them from reoffending once they get out. As the number of prisoners increases here at HMP Oakwood, there is a concern among some prisoners the housing blocks will become overcrowded, which could lead to more violence and disorder. Overcrowding is a problem facing many jails in the country, and the management here tell me they are determined to bring in more staff so that the system does not crash as a result of more inmates.

France church attack: In pictures French emergency services were summoned to the town of Saint Etienne- du-Rouvray, near Rouen, on Tuesday morning. Two attackers, claiming to be from the so-called Islamic State group, had entered the town's church, seen here in the background. Security forces took up position in the town's usually quiet streets. The attackers killed the elderly priest, Father Jacques Hamel, and took four worshippers hostage. With police cordoning off the streets, security forces surrounded the church and shot dead the attackers. The hostages were freed. One of them is being treated for serious injuries. An elite police unit later raided a house belonging to a suspect linked to the attack. Prosecutors say one person was arrested. Police remained on the streets of Saint-Etienne-du-Rouvray, as homes were searched. French President Francois Hollande visited the town, meeting local officials and members of the security forces. A makeshift memorial has been set up for the priest outside the town hall. The town's residents have been gathering at the scene, many of them in shock. At the Notre-Dame cathedral in Paris, worshippers attended a mass in memory of the priest. Similar ceremonies have been held across France - including this one at the Saint Jean cathedral in Lyon. French soldiers have also been deployed at other religious sites, such as this church in Toulouse.

French church attack: Faith leaders call for more security French religious leaders have called for more security at places of worship following the murder of an elderly priest in Normandy on Tuesday. Representatives of Christian, Muslim, Jewish and Buddhist faiths spoke after meeting President Hollande. Father Jacques Hamel was killed while conducting morning mass in his church. One of the two men who attacked him was wearing an electronic surveillance tag, which was temporarily turned off under his probation conditions. The attack came 12 days after the attack in Nice in which 84 people were killed. Muslim leader Dalil Boubakeur, rector of Paris's Grand Mosque, said the leaders "deeply desire that our places of worship are the subject of greater [security] focus, a sustained focus", as even "the most humble place of worship" can be subject to an attack. Tuesday's attack took place in an ordinary Catholic church in a suburb of Rouen. Mr Boubakeur expressed "profound sorrow" on behalf of French Muslims at the attack, which he described as a "blasphemous sacrilege". The Archbishop of Paris, Andre Vingt-Trois, praised the harmonious relations between France's religions. "We must not let ourselves get pulled in to Daesh's political games," he said, referring to the self-styled Islamic State group, saying it wanted "to set children of the same family against each other". President Francois Hollande has also held a meeting of his security and defence council on Wednesday morning, and is now chairing a cabinet meeting. On Tuesday Mr Hollande appealed for "unity" as he warned that the war against terrorism "will be long". "Our democracy is the target, and it will be our shield. Let us stand together. We will win this war," he said. Only one of the two attackers has been named. Adel Kermiche, 19, had twice tried to reach Syria to fight with the so-called Islamic State group. According to Le Monde (in French) , the prosecutor's office had asked for him to remain in detention but this was overruled by a judge. She ordered that he be released to house arrest with an electronic tag ensuring that he remained at home, except on weekday mornings. This meant that on Tuesday morning he was free to leave the family home and head to the church. He and his fellow attacker slit Father Hamel's throat before being killed by police. One of four people taken hostage suffered severe knife wounds, prosecutor Francois Molins said. France is still reeling from the Bastille Day attack in Nice earlier this month, when a lorry was driven into celebrating crowds by Tunisian Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel , killing more than 80 people. 64 Inderjeet Singh: I will reveal truth about top officials Even as the Narsingh Yadav dope saga continues, the Rio Olympics-bound Indian contingent received another setback yesterday as shot- putter Inderjeet Singh failed a National Anti-Doping Agency-conducted dope test on June 22. The 28-year-old reigning Asian Champion said his samples had been tampered with. Also Read: Shot putter Inderjeet Singh fails dope test; cries conspiracy Shot-putter Inderjeet Singh in the city recently during an event organised by his employers Indian Oil. Pic/Suresh Karkera "This is a conspiracy and there is something wrong. My sample has been tampered with. Why would a player take something which is not good for his health," said Inderjeet. Inderjeet's 'A' sample has tested positive for anabolic steroids, androsterone and etiocholanolone, and if his 'B' sample also tests positive, he will have to miss Rio Games besides facing the prospect of being banned for four years under the new WADA code. Interestingly, on July 15, Singh had told mid-day that the only way to put a player down is to get him framed in dope. It was as though he had foreseen trouble. "There is only one way to end a player's chances when he is on the rise — frame him on doping charges by mixing the drug in their drinking water. There have been many films on this. In our country, the one who stands up against the authorities always finds himself fighting a lonely battle. The athlete is warned that he shall be finished. Sports Authority of India (SAI) has a lot of stories that have never come out. I will tell you the truth about some top officials after I come back from Rio," Inderjeet said during an event organised by his employers, Indian Oil in Bandra earlier this month. Inderjeet also pointed out that the coaches who toil are never recognised. "True hard working coaches like mine (Pritam Singh) never get recognition. They unearth talent, toil on the field, but are never talked about. There is lot of conflict in the country regarding sports authorities and I shall write a book on this. If the higher-ups can't provide the next generation what they want, how can they have medal hopes," Inderjeet added.

Roger Federer to miss Rio Olympics 2016 games due to knee injury Rio de Janeiro: Switzerland's 17-time grand slam winner Roger Federer has decided to call an end to the current season as he announced on Tuesday that he will miss the rest of the 2016 season including the upcoming Olympic Games to be held here next month. Roger Federer "I'm extremely disappointed to announce that I will not be able to represent Switzerland at the Olympic Games in Rio and that I will also miss the remainder of the season," said the 34-year-old in a Facebook post, Xinhua news agency reported. "Considering all options after consulting with my doctors and my team, I have made the very difficult decision to call an end to my 2016 season as I need more extensive rehabilitation following my knee surgery earlier this year. " Federer received a surgery to his left knee in February after being ousted in the semifinals in Australian Open. Although he returned to compete in the Monte Carlo Masters in April, the Swiss was forced to withdraw from French Open with a back problem in May. "The doctors advised that if I want to play on the ATP World Tour injury free for another few years, as I intend to do, I must give both my knee and body the proper time to fully recover," said Federer who reached the Wimbledon semi-final earlier this month but required treatment on his knee before being defeated in the semifinals by Milos Raonic. "It is tough to miss the rest of the year. However, the silver lining is that this experience has made me realize how lucky I have been throughout my career with very few injuries," he said. "I am as motivated as ever and plan to put all my energy towards coming back strong, healthy and in shape to play attacking tennis in 2017," said Federer, who will turn 35 next month.

O'Sullivan to do battle with the Hawks Johannesburg - Forensic investigator Paul O'Sullivan has laid a complaint with the Hawks watchdog against its Gauteng boss Prince Mokotedi and other members over their alleged misconduct. He wanted answers about what he alleged was the Hawks’ gross abuse of power, the “monstrous abuse” of his constitutional rights, and Mokotedi’s alleged unlawful appointment, he said in his complaint. He intended submitting a similar complaint to the National Director of Public Prosecutions. "I expect and am ready for further ‘push-back’ as a result of standing up for my rights and taking a strong stand against corruption in South Africa," he said on Tuesday. He further instructed his lawyers to apply to the High Court to stop "the systematic abuse of my constitutional rights, by Mokotedi and his accomplices". He would bring a "substantial" damages claim against the State. Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said they would not be drawn into a "public spat" on O'Sullivan's allegations. "Mr O' Sullivan, just like any other citizen in this country, has got the right to approach any institution to address whatever concerns he has. " Selebi to book O'Sullivan said the catalyst for his "abuse" was his contribution in bringing late former national police commissioner Jackie Selebi to book for corruption. He said Mokotedi testified during that trial on Selebi's behalf, and his evidence was rejected. “His bias was exacerbated by my persistent fight against corruption, in which I implicated persons near and dear to him.” O'Sullivan said he failed to understand how Mokotedi could have been considered "fit and proper” to be appointed to the Hawks. He cited Mokotedi's evidence in the Selebi trial and a judgment Investec bank obtained against him for a debt in excess of R100 000 following credit card abuse. In addition, he stated he was “100% JZ” (Jacob Zuma) on his Twitter account, which "shows an association inimical to unbiased conduct". Publicly available court documents show Investec secured two judgments by default against Mokotedi and his wife. These related to payments on a R1m bond and a R100 000 credit card bill. Mokotedi owed nearly R10 000 on another credit card. Mokotedi previously told News24 he only found out about the default judgments against him in January, after they were handed down in December. He said his attorneys had since entered the fray and arranged a payment plan with the banks. He maintained he was in the clear. No security clearance O'Sullivan referred in his complaint to a story News24 published in June , according to which Mokotedi did not have security clearance after several months of leading the Hawks in Gauteng. "Security clearance is a very long process. They can’t give you security in one day. The head must first say I am suitable for the post, then the process unfolds," he said at the time. In his complaint, O'Sullivan highlighted the controversy surrounding Mokotedi's time at the National Prosecuting Authority, where he headed the integrity management unit. Mokotedi resigned before facing disciplinary action on multiple charges of misconduct. He allegedly leaked a report about an investigation he initiated and steered into former prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach. Earlier this month, O'Sullivan appeared in court for allegedly contravening Section 26B of the Citizenship Act because he had left the country on his Irish passport. He was the first person ever in South Africa to be charged with the offence. During the case, the Hawks disclosed they were investigating a slew of charges against him, ranging from fraud, to kidnapping, and espionage. O'Sullivan maintained the charges were malicious, opened by people he had previously investigated, and an attempt to stop him from investigating corruption within the police and NPA. In his complaint O'Sullivan detailed several of the "trumped up" cases against him. He also mentioned his arrest in April this year for leaving the country on his Irish passport. He said Mokotedi visited him while he was being detained, and promised that he would be released on so-called "police bail", provided he disclosed to the Hawks information that was not relevant to his arrest. "I agreed because I was desperate at that stage to be released as the events and circumstances of my arrest and the detention were emotionally draining and it physically and psychologically impacted on me.” Ridiculously stringent bail After he had disclosed the requested information about now-retired Lieutenant General Vinesh Moonoo to Mokotedi and other members of the Hawks, Mokotedi told him that the prosecutor, one advocate Maema, had overridden his decision to grant him police bail. O'Sullivan said that at the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court that Monday, Mokotedi and Maema told him he would remain in custody because they had not finalised their investigations. O’Sullivan said when his lawyers made it clear to Mokotedi and Maema that they had recordings confirming the undertakings that bail would not be opposed, the State agreed to ridiculously stringent bail conditions. Mulaudzi said Mokotedi’s security clearance would be finalised in due course. "Stringent security checks are done prior to a person being appointed in the SAPS and DPCI. If there was any anomaly he won't be here. So what is the issue here? " Mulaudzi said the Hawks would not comment on O'Sullivan's allegations, including the Investec judgments, the “100% JZ” statement on Twitter, and the “police bail”. “We don't dwell on personal issues regarding our members in public.”

They were also paraded half-naked on the road in full public view. After a video of the incident went viral, it sparked off violent protests across Gujarat. 70 MLB Baseball Box Scores NEW YORK -- For the New York Mets, many times when Bartolo Colon pitches, there's a reassuring feeling that everything is going to work out. Everything worked out Tuesday night when Colon pitched seven strong innings and combined with two relievers on a four-hitter as the Mets earned a split of their doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals with a 3-1 victory. "He is a unique human being," New York manager Terry Collins. "There's no question about it. He's unique, he's different. "So unique that the Mets are planning on using him on three days' rest for Saturday's game against the Colorado Rockies. Colon will make the start on short rest after successfully executing a strategy of keeping pitches away from a lineup who leads the National League with 138 home runs. After Noah Syndergaard labored at times through 115 pitches in the 3-2 loss in the opener, the entertaining right-hander allowed one run and three hits. He struck out eight without a walk and could have easily thrown more than 65- of-87 pitches he threw for strikes had the Mets not needed him Saturday. Colon's lone mistake was the first pitch he threw to Jedd Gyorko in the third that turned into a home run over the left-field wall. After Gyorko's second home run of the day and sixth in nine games, Colon retired 17 of the final 19 hitters. "He's a special guy and we are very, very lucky to have him in our rotation right now," Collins said. Colon rebounded from three consecutive starts that did not last beyond 5 2/3 innings by turning in his fifth start of the season where he lasted at least seven innings and allowed one run. "We talk about guys that have something different and his sinker is different from the rest of the ones you see in the league," St. Louis manager Mike Matheny said. "He made good pitches with his off speed, his changeup, his slider, everything he needed to do, he did. "Since turning 40 on May 24, 2013, Colon has had 36 starts in which he has allowed one run or less. Since 1913, it is the sixth most for a starter after turning 40. "Just throwing it straight," Colon said through an interpreter. "It was going exactly where I wanted to. "After Colon's latest effective outing, Addison Reed struck out two in the eighth and Jeruys Famila converted his 36th save and 52nd in a row by fanning Matt Holliday with a runner on first. Besides the steady outing from Colon, the Mets received productive nights from the left side of the infield. Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera drove in two runs with a double and a sacrifice fly while Wilmer Flores had three hits. Cabrera's double in the third off Jaime Garcia (7-7) tied the game at 1-1 and ended a hitless drought of 32 at-bats with a runner in scoring position, five shy of Gregg Jefferies record. "It's a big monkey off his back for sure," Collins said. Flores helped the Mets take the lead in the fourth. He had a leadoff double, took third when right fielder Randall Grichuk misplayed Neil Walker's fly ball for an error and scored on James Loney's double play grounder. An inning later, the Mets added their final run when Cabrera lifted a sacrifice fly. The Cardinals homered for the 17th straight game and have 138 home runs. Other than Gyorko's latest home run, little went right for St. Louis offensively as it struck out 12 times and did not get a walk. "We don't like losing any game, ever," Matheny said. After getting five innings from Carlos Martinez in the opener, Garcia allowed three runs (two earned) and five hits in five innings. NOTES: After the game, the Mets announced 3B Jose Reyes has a Grade 1 intercostal strain and will be out a "few days". Manager Terry Collins said Reyes was injured on his final swing of the opener. ... The Cardinals became the first team to surpass their home run total from last season. ... St. Louis INF Jedd Gyorko homered in both games of the doubleheader for second time this week. ... Mets LF Yoenis Cespedes was in the starting lineup in the nightcap. Prior to the opener, Collins said he intended on using Cespedes for both games

$7.5mn military-grade protection: NYPD buys new equipment for patrol officers — RT America Police Commissioner William Bratton told a news conference on Monday that the NYPD has purchased 20,000 military helmets, 6,000 military heavy duty bullet-proof vests, trauma kits, and ballistic doors and windows for patrol cars, Reuters reported. While NYPD special units are already equipped with military-grade gear and arms, patrol officers - who typically arrive first to shooting situations - are said to begin wearing the upgraded equipment in September. The new bullet-proof vests are capable of protecting officers from the kind of weapon used in the Baton Rouge shooting, where three officers were shot dead, and the Dallas shooting that resulted in the deaths of five officers and seven wounded patrolmen. “You name it, we're buying it,” Bratton said, adding that “there's not a police department in America that is spending as much money, as much thought and interest on this issue of officer safety.” A complaint filed with the state Labor Department by the US Patrolmen's Benevolent Association had earlier claimed that the protective gear police officers wear is not sufficient when faced with military-grade weapons. “The little vests we wear during the day are not adequate to take on a guy with military gear,” DNAinfo New York cited a spokesman from the Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association, Anthony O’Leary, as saying. “It's not a fair fight.” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio commented that the decision was made quickly, “in light of the challenges we face. " “Obviously all over the country people have been deeply troubled by the attack on our officers,” the mayor said, adding that "we will not be the police department that brings a knife to the gunfight. " Following the mass murder of officers in Dallas, police departments of nearly half of America’s 30 biggest cities issued directives implementing new tactics. Among other things, the directives required officer to patrol two at a time while on duty. At least 31 law enforcement officers have died on duty since the beginning of the year - a remarkable increase from the 18 officers who lost their lives over the same period in 2015, the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund reported. 2016-07-27 09:59 www.rt.com

US State Dept authorizes voluntary departure of staff's family members in Turkey after failed coup — RT News The voluntary departure of employees' family members is being allowed by both the US embassy in Ankara and the US Consulate General in Istanbul. “The Department of State made this decision following the July 15 attempted coup and subsequent declaration by the Turkish government of a 90-day State of Emergency,” a security message published on the embassy’s website on Tuesday states. The Department “advises US citizens to reconsider travel to Turkey at this time.” “During this period, US citizens in Turkey may see an increase in police or military activities and restrictions on movement,” a memo emailed to US citizens residing in Turkey states. US government personnel in Turkey are banned from traveling into the southeastern provinces of the country, and American citizens have been advised to “avoid areas in close proximity to the Syrian border.” On Monday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said ahead of a trip to the US that ties with Washington could turn sour unless the US extradites cleric Fethullah Gulen, who is currently residing in the country. Ankara blames Gulen for being behind the failed coup. Washington has repeatedly said that Turkey must give clear evidence of Gulen’s link with the attempted coup before discussing any possible extradition. Also on Monday, Turkey’s Yeni Safak newspaper alleged that the former commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan, retired US Army General John F. Campbell, was the mastermind behind the failed military coup in Turkey, citing sources close to the investigation. According to Yeni Safak, Campbell "also managed more than $2 billion in transactions via UBA Bank in Nigeria by using CIA links to distribute among the pro-coup military personnel in Turkey. " The retired US general had allegedly paid "at least two secret visits" to Turkey from May up until the attempted coup, which Turkish authorities blamed on what they call the Fethullah Terrorist Organization (FETO). Washington later dismissed accusations that Campbell was the mastermind behind the coup, with White House press secretary Josh Earnest calling the allegations against the general unsubstantiated. Meanwhile, cooperation between the Turkish and American militaries has reportedly returned to pre-coup level, Anadolu Agency reported. “Operations have in almost all manners returned to normal in terms of the operations we're conducting from Turkey,” Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Gen. Joseph Dunford told reporters at the Pentagon. Turkey’s Gen. Hulusi Akar reportedly contacted Dunford twice last week, confirming Turkey’s commitment to the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

HUD Wont Stop Ignoring Ethics Rules And Hiring Criminals Giving jobs to incompetent people and convicted criminals due to poor background checks is a hiring staple at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The department “does not have an effective case management system for the timely review and evaluation of the character, background, and history, of candidates for employment,” resulting in “inability to timely identify candidates for employment who have a criminal record, or a pending criminal charge,” according to a 2013 inspector general report prompted by discovery of a mortgage fraud scheme involving a government employee. The “systemic weakness” report is being made public for the first time after it was obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation through a Freedom of Information Act request. The same report said HUD also has an “inability to take timely and appropriate personnel action relative to employees who pose a personnel security risk,” and recommended that the department “should immediately develop and implement” procedures to prevent bad hires and to deal with those who slip through. But since then, as exclusively reported by TheDCNF, HUD’s Government National Mortgage Association — Ginnie Mae — hired David Fender as its chief financial officer, even though he falsely answered “no” when asked if he had been fired in the last five years and also whether he was delinquent on federal taxes, according to HUD’s inspector general. He was hired despite a pre-hire background check that said he was not recommended “for a government security clearance or employment” after his previous boss told screeners he had been dismissed for incompetence and running a side-business on work time. Fender claimed on his application that he hadn’t been fired recently, meaning HUD knew he was dishonest at the time it hired him. HUD spokeswoman Gina Screen refused to tell TheDCNF if HUD ever implemented the IG’s recommendations from 2013. The IG has repeatedly said HUD officials often leave known shortcomings uncorrected. In a 2014 case, HUD officials hired an intern for a full-time job overseeing millions of dollars in federal grants even though she had been caught while still an intern stealing a housing project unit for her sister and lying about it to investigators. For years, HUD’s senior officials have flouted basic federal ethics laws enforced by the Office of Government Ethics (OGE) requiring the filing of financial disclosure forms showing conflicts of interest. Officials hired Debra Gross as deputy assistant secretary for Public Housing while she simultaneously worked for a lobbying trade group representing the housing authorities she was in charge of regulating. Gross didn’t file the required OGE form that would have shown the conflict of interest. The HUD General Counsel did nothing, even though Gross also lied under oath. The IG said such lying “was not an isolated occurrence” because only three of 16 highly paid HUD officials with known outside employers filed required ethics reports. This month, the Office of Special Counsel concluded that HUD Secretary Julian Castro violated the Hatch Act by using his government position for partisan political purposes. He faces no penalties because President Barack Obama decided Castro’s admission of a mistake was sufficient. In 2013, then-Deputy Secretary Maurice Jones used HUD resources to ask employees and recipients of HUD money to lobby Congress for more money for the agency. HUD’s high-ranking congressional liaison then tried to sabotage an investigation by Congress. “HUD officials changed existing policies, in the midst of the OIG investigation, in an attempt to legitimize their actions and impeded our investigation by withholding information and threatening the HUD-OIG investigating agents,” HUD’s IG told Congress . “In response to our report of investigation, HUD took no formal disciplinary action. Elliott Mincberg resigned from his HUD position in April 2014 and [top ethics official] Peter Constantine was verbally reprimanded.” Brian E. Thompson, a HUD loan guarantee specialist, stole nearly a million dollars from the government. He was hired despite convictions for armed robbery, check deception and felony theft. HUD’s top three human resources officials all separately violated civil service regulations that bar using their positions to get government jobs for relatives. HUD’s associate general counsel and a deputy assistant secretary told a company they would intentionally look the other way on millions of dollars of fraud as part of a political deal, and violated the law to block a subordinate from telling Congress about the corruptions. The Government Accountability Office ruled that by law, that meant the officials personally had to give back their salaries, but HUD hasn’t asked them to, and they haven’t done so. 77 EXCLUSIVE: IRS Investigates Clinton Foundation's 'Pay-to-Play' Operations IRS Commissioner John Koskinen referred congressional charges of corrupt Clinton Foundation “pay-to-play” activities to his tax agency’s exempt operations office for investigation, The Daily Caller News Foundation has learned. The request to investigate the Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation on charges of “public corruption” was made in a July 15 letter by 64 House Republicans to the IRS, FBI and Federal Trade Commission (FTC). They charged the foundation is “ lawless.” The initiative is being led by Rep. Marsha Blackburn, a Tennessee Republican who serves as the vice chairwoman of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, which oversees FTC. The FTC regulates public charities alongside the IRS. The lawmakers charged the Clinton Foundation is a “lawless ‘pay-to-play’ enterprise that has been operating under a cloak of philanthropy for years and should be investigated.” Koskinen’s July 22 reply came only a week after the House Republicans contacted the tax agency. It arrived to their offices Monday, the first opening day of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. “We have forwarded the information you have submitted to our Exempt Organizations Program in Dallas,” Koskinen told the Republicans. The Exempt Organization Program is the division of the IRS that regulates the operations of public foundations and charities. It’s the same division that was led by former IRS official Lois Lerner when hundreds of conservative, evangelical and tea party non-profit applicants were illegally targeted and harassed by tax officials. Blackburn told TheDCNF she believes the IRS has a double standard because, “they would go after conservative groups and religious groups and organizations, but they wouldn’t be looking at the Clinton Foundation for years. It was as if they choose who they are going to audit and question. It’s not right.” Blackburn said she and her colleagues will “continue to push” for answers on the Clinton Foundation’s governing policies, including its insular board of directors. She said they also will examine conflicts of interest and “follow the money trail.” “In my opinion, there’s a lack of good governance, there is the appearance of conflicts of interest, and there are continued questions about the financial dealings,” she told TheDCNF. House Republicans singled out Laureate Education and Uranium One as two companies that seemed to have paid lavish sums to the Clintons and later received official government benefits. Laureate hired former President Bill Clinton as “honorary chancellor,” paying him $16.5 million over five years. The -based company, which operates for-profit universities in 28 countries, also donated between $1 million and $5 million to the Clinton Foundation, according to the foundation’s web site. While Bill was collecting a paycheck from the company and his wife was secretary of state, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), an arm of the World Bank, invested $150 million in Laureate. It was the largest-ever single IFC investment to an educational company. The United States government is the largest contributor to the IFC. During that same period, the Department of State’s U. S. Agency for International Development awarded $55 million to the International Youth Foundation. Laureate CEO Douglas Becker is on the foundation’s board of directors. International Youth Foundation, the Clinton Foundation and Laureate jointly participated in foundation programs. A Laureate spokesman denied the quid pro quo charges: “Allegations of any quid pro quo between Laureate, the International Youth Foundation and the Clintons are completely false,” she told TheDCNF, adding, “the IFC’s decision to invest in Laureate had no connection to and was not influenced in any way whatsoever by Hillary Clinton.” The IFC also awarded $150 million to another company owned by Frank Giustra, a close friend of Bill Clinton. Giustra donated $100 million to create the “Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership” within the Clinton Foundation. The funds went to Pacific Infrastructure, a company in which Giustra had a significant financial stake. The company was to build a port and oil pipeline in Colombia that was strenuously opposed by environmental and human rights groups because the pipeline sliced through five indigenous villages and forcibly displaced the tribes. Giustra also was an owner in Uranium One, a uranium mining company with operations in Kazakhstan and in the western United States. Giustra wanted to sell a share of the uranium business to Russia’s atomic energy agency, which required U. S. approval, including that of Secretary Clinton. The Russian investment was approved. Blackburn added that it appeared the Clinton Foundation — which was tax- exempt only to construct and manage Clinton’s presidential library — never got IRS approval to become a tax-exempt global organization with operations in Africa, Asia, , the Pacific and the Caribbean. “In the Clinton Foundation we have a charity that has never filed the appropriate paperwork,” Blackburn charged. Charles Ortel, a Wall Street analyst who has been investigating the Clinton Foundation, told TheDCNF that the expansion of the foundation into a global giant was not legally approved by the IRS. “It’s crystal clear in a review of their application that their purposes were narrowly limited, as they should have been, to a presidential archive in Little Rock, Arkansas,” he said to TheDCNF. “End of discussion.” Blackburn also questions the makeup of the Clinton Foundation’s board of directors, which IRS rules require include independent, arm’s-length board members. The Clinton Foundation board mainly consists of close friends, business colleagues and big donors to the Clintons, as reported by TheDCNF. “All charities need to guard against incestuous relationships which limit their ability to be objective,” the congresswoman said. “In the Clinton Foundation, we see a lack of diversity within their board.” Uranium One did not respond to TheDCNF’s request for comment. The Clinton Foundation also did not respond to TheDCNF’s request for comment. 78 Cecile Richards Calls Trump's Pro-Life Stance 'Disturbing' PHILADELPHIA — The president of an organization exposed for harvesting the parts of aborted fetuses called Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump’s worldview “disturbing” in a speech at the Democratic National Convention Tuesday. Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, spoke ahead of former President Bill Clinton in support of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton’s extreme pro-abortion stance, applauding her defense of a woman’s “right” to end the life of an unborn child. “Donald Trump has pledged to appoint justices who will overturn Roe v. Wade and undo decades of progress,” Richards told a cheering crowd. “His policies aren’t just frightening, they’re rooted in a disturbing worldview.” Americans were shocked, even disturbed, last summer when the Center for Medical Progress (CMP) released a series of videos in which top Planned Parenthood doctors discuss the best way to abort a fetus so that its parts can be frozen and shipped to scientists for research. “I’d say a lot of people want liver,” Dr. Deborah Nucatola, PPFA Senior Director of Medical Services, tells actors posing as buyers from a human biologics company in the video, while munching on a salad and sipping a glass of wine. “And for that reason, most providers will do this case under ultrasound guidance, so they’ll know where they’re putting their forceps.” (RELATED: Nearly 1 In 3 Abortions Happen At Planned Parenthood ‘Health Clinics’) CMP won a lengthy legal battle over the videos Tuesday morning, when all charges brought against CMP director David Daleiden in Texas related to the undercover footage were dropped. 80 Agency Takes 5 Years To Respond To FOIA Department of Labor (DOL) officials likely violated federal law when they said they had records requested under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), then six years later said they didn’t and deleted an email account that proved otherwise, Americans for Limited Government (ALG) said in a FOIA appeal Tuesday. “At best, this is a case of mismanagement,” ALG President Nathan Mehrens told The Daily Caller News Foundation. “At worst, well, use your imagination. Are they hiding something and trying to run out the clock in order to avoid sunlight into their operations?” ALG claims in an appeal to the DOL solicitor general that department officials likely violated FOIA and the Federal Records Act by failing to conduct a reasonable search for documents and destroying potentially relevant email records. Mehrens will file a complaint with the department’s inspector general in the next week. (RELATED: CIA Gets Sued Over Documents Withheld In Freedom Of Information Act Request) Mehrens requested on Aug. 12, 2012, all DOL communications to date discussing Wage and Hour Division opinion letters. He sought to discover why the office stopped issuing the opinions in 2009. The opinions offered official positions on issues such as whether a particular occupation is exempt from overtime laws. DOL officials said they were reviewing responsive documents. Wage and Hour FOIA officer William Nardo told Mehrens Feb. 7, 2012, that he had “received responsive material from our subject matter experts,” according to ALG records obtained by TheDCNF. “We must now review and redact information in accordance with the exemptions of FOIA.” Three weeks later, Nardo said his office was “reviewing responsive documents and hopes to send it to our legal department by next week.” But more than four years and dozens of email exchanges later, Wage and Hour Government Information Specialist Michelle Moreno issued a final response on July 7, 2016, saying her office had “no records. After researching the history of opinion letters, we did not locate any documents responsive to your request. Therefore, we must provide a ‘no records’ response to your request. In 2009 Wage and Hour discontinued the use of opinion letters. “Additionally, the person who held the administrator position in 2009 no longer work [sic] in wage and hour [sic]. Furthermore, the administrator’s email account was eliminated on or about six months after the person left in accordance with Department of Labor’s procedures.” President Barack Obama promised his would be the “ most transparent administration in history ,” but only one of two things is possible, Mehrens said. “Based on the requirement to preserve the records in question and the fact that the department previously told us that they had responsive records for us, one of two things is apparent now, either they 1) unlawfully failed to preserve the records; or 2) they didn’t perform a reasonable search for the requested records,” Mehrens told TheDCNF. 81 Gunman fatally shoots doctor at Berlin clinic, not terrorist related – police — RT News The incident happened at the Benjamin Franklin Clinic, located in the Steglitz district, at around 11:00 GMT. It emerged that the doctor was shot by the gunman, who later turned the gun on himself. Police said the physician was critically injured and was rushed to hospital where he was kept in intensive care. However, he succumbed to his injuries less than two hours after being shot. Police have released a statement saying the situation is under control and the area has been sealed, adding that there is no danger at present. The law enforcement body also said it does not believe that terrorism was the reason behind the attack. Police have also confirmed that no one else was injured in the attack and it is believed that the gunman acted alone. The building was evacuated and secured soon after the shooting was reported. Formed following the merger of the Free University Berlin and Humboldt University, the Benjamin Franklin Clinic is part of one of Europe’s largest hospitals. There are four locations across Berlin. This is the fifth attack to have rocked Germany since July 18. The four attacks, three of which were committed by migrants, left 10 people dead and injured 34.

Hollywood Relies On 'Hitler Card' To Stop Trump No one expected liberal Hollywood to fall in line behind the GOP’s presidential pick. What we’ve seen in the Age of Trump, though, leaves the industry’s past progressive posturing in the dust. In short, stars are playing the Hitler card against the real estate mogul turned reality show star turned politician. And there’s little sign they’ll stop before Election Day. The big question remains: will it make a difference? Or have celebrities pushed their GOP hate too far this time? First, Louis CK released an open letter to Republicans begging them to vote against Donald Trump. “It was funny for a little while. But the guy is Hitler. And by that I mean that we are being Germany in the ’30s. Do you think they saw the sh-t coming? Hitler was just some hilarious and refreshing dude with a weird comb over who would say anything at all.” Then, Sarah Silverman greeted fans of TBS’s “Conan” by arriving on set dressed as Adolf Hitler. And Silverman’s Hitler wasn’t happy being compared to the real estate mogul. Now, it’s Tom Green’s turn. The once red-hot comic released a satirical video on the liberal FunnyOrDie.com site starring himself as Trump. And guess what? He’s invoking Nazi themes, too. Are these the kind of messages that cut through the media haze in 2016? Lauren Wright, a board member of the White House Transition Project, says it’s very hard to determine if a single celebrity declaration changes any hearts or minds. Yes, celebrities excel at drawing attention to themselves and their arguments. That doesn’t necessarily translate to more, or less, votes for a candidate — even after the Hitler card is dealt, according to Wright. In fact, Trump hasn’t even been severely damaged after members of his own party, like talker Glenn Beck , made the Trump-Hitler connection. “If that line of attack hasn’t moved the needle coming from your own party, it’s unlikely [to do so] coming from outside,” says Wright, author of “On Behalf of the President.” It’s also a challenge changing anyone’s mind on Trump. You’re either wearing a bright red “Make America Great Again” hat, or you’re sharing Trump jokes on Twitter, she adds. Still, Charles Zelden, professor of history and political science at Nova Southeastern University, contends Hollywood’s incendiary rhetoric might matter. If that proves true, you can partially thank social media. It’s one thing for Silverman’s Hitler shtick to hit the airwaves. It’s quite another if she or a fellow star shares it on Twitter. Her followers “already have a predilection to listen to the star when they speak on the latest headlines,” Zelden says. Sharing these messages might mean reaching potential voters “who might not have gotten the message elsewhere.” Those followers could dig deeper into the election news reports. That, in turn, can transform a passive citizen into a voter. “If people they respect are making these analogies, it might result in the individual paying more attention, or being motivated,” he says. Then again, Trump has a way of trashing conventional wisdom. “He could use it as a way of motivating his base, but his base is pretty motivated [already],” he says. “Maybe it’ll impact undecided voters who share the values of the cultural elite.” The old saw once said it’s a mistake to play the Hitler card in politics. Candidates and established politicians alike typically get burned for doing so, says Andrew Ricci, vice president at the D. C.-based PR firm Levick. Ricci, who has developed communication strategies for numerous candidates, says comedians aren’t held to that strict standard. Platforms like Twitter and Instagram offer celebrities an irresistible way to reach their fans. And stars who might think twice about sharing a strident political view might do so out of impulse control. In the not so distant past, people declined to discuss politics in “polite company,” Levick notes. Now, when a star has hundreds of thousands of followers, the urge to speak out is tough to ignore. He just thinks a shock comic like Sarah Silverman might not impact potential voters like some of her peers. “Some [stars] are known for their social causes, like Bono and George Clooney,” he says. “Others commenting on this are not seen as social policy leaders. They don’t have much impact.” Zelden says, even if many ignore Hollywood’s Hitler-Trump connections, it still could make a difference. “The key to this election is turnout,” Zelden says. “If Hollywood results in 2 percent more people interested in politics out of 300 million, that’s significant.”

VIDEO: DNC Demonstrators Order Whites To The Back Participants in a “black resistance” protest at the Democratic National Convention ordered white attendees to move to the back of the demonstration, as they were not wanted at the front. “I need all white people to move to the back. This is a black and brown resistance march,” a woman with a microphone can be heard saying in a video posted online Tuesday afternoon. “You will not have a say all up in here.” WATCH: “Take your rightful position and get behind us,” she continues. “If you see any white folks, direct them to the back of the crowd.” The woman’s orders applied to both supportive marchers and to news media attempting to cover the protests. “White media, get to the back,” she says. Black media members, on the other hand, were encouraged to come forward to the front. “White people to the back, black people to the front,” she adds. One white person attempted to defy the order, and drew the ire of marchers. “Go back, go back!” chanted one demonstrator, while another said “We see your privilege.” “White people cannot be up front,” a woman in a hijab says near the video’s end. “White people will not be an obstruction no more!” The video ends after less than two minutes, without showing how the situation was ultimately resolved. But according to another video uploaded later, the protest march was re-integrated and proceeded without segregation. Follow Blake on Twitter Send tips to [email protected] . 84 Hillary Tells It Like It Ain’t According to the latest polling, almost seven out of ten Americans view Hillary Clinton as a liar. Twenty years ago, New York Times columnist William Safire wrote that “Americans of all political persuasions are coming to the sad realization” that Hillary “is a congenital liar.” Not much has changed. Her 60 Minutes interview last weekend did nothing to repair this image. She didn’t even bother to coordinate her lies about Benghazi, saying in one breath that she took “responsibility” for it and saying in the next breath that “it wasn’t her ball to carry.” In an unaired portion of the interview, she professed total ignorance of any dirty tricks against the Bernie Sanders campaign. “I am adamantly opposed to anyone bringing religion into our political process,” she innocently said. “The Constitution says no religious tests so that is just absolutely wrong and unacceptable.” According to the hacked e-mails, officials at the Democratic National Committee schemed to use the atheism of Bernie Sanders against him in the South. That sounds exactly like the kind of dirty trick Hillary and her advisers would consider. Recall that in 2008 her chief strategist Mark Penn deployed a strategy similar to that one against Barack Obama. Under Penn’s direction, Hillary talked about her Methodism while her campaign sent reporters a picture of Obama in Muslim garb. Penn had told her to stress that she was “born in the middle of America to the middle class in the middle of the last century.” Hillary’s famous hedge that “as far as I know” Obama is not Islamic came straight out of the Penn playbook. Penn thought that she could drive a wedge between Obama and Americans by making insinuations about un-American influences over him. In the South and the Rust Belt during that campaign, Hillary stoked those insinuations while she dispatched Bill and Chelsea to appear in the company of Christian pastors such as Joel Osteen. Hillary is famous for exploding at her staff for not hitting opponents hard enough. That DNC staffers operating in such a climate would have concocted a plan to undermine Sanders in the South by drawing attention to his atheism makes sense. Any stick will do for Hillary when an opponent is gaining on her. Sitting next to Hillary as she disclaimed “anyone bringing religion into our political process” was Tim Kaine, who wears liberal religion on his sleeve. For years, Kaine has passed himself off as a “devout Catholic” whose commitment to “social justice” derives from his “Jesuit education.” It would be more accurate to say that his support for abortion and gay marriage derive from his Jesuit education. He learned libertinism and socialism from the modern Jesuits but not social justice. When he launched his career, Kaine adopted the Mario Cuomo-style sophistry that he is “personally” opposed to abortion but publicly supportive of it. Don’t count on hearing that line anymore. Pro-abortion liberals don’t care for the negative implication of that remark. Nor do they like the “safe, legal, and rare” formulation popularized by Bill Clinton, which Hillary has stopped using, lest the “rare” offend abortion supporters. They want abortion safe, legal, and often. Kaine spends a lot of time talking about religion before getting around to saying that it should have no relevance in public life. He doesn’t believe in the separation of church and campaigning, subjecting his audiences to stories about his days in the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Central America. Who cares? If religion is a purely private matter, why include that on your political résumé? Kaine wants it both ways: a halo for his “Jesuit values” and an exemption for his 100 percent NARAL voting record. And what was Hillary doing calling Kaine a “shining example of faith in action” when she introduced him as her running mate? Wasn’t the whole point of the Cuomo creed that Catholics Democrats should not put their faith in action? To do so constituted an “imposition” on others and a violation of the secularist contract upon which they claim the public sphere rests. Hillary’s capacity for such cynicism helps explain her floundering poll numbers. Trump is criticized for calculating too little; Hillary is criticized for calculating too much. Only a candidate as devious as Hillary could turn “lock her up,” heard both in Cleveland and Philadelphia, into a bipartisan chant.

Ron Paul Spoke To Libertarians, No Mention Of Gary Johnson WASHINGTON — Ron Paul gave a speech to about 400 libertarians at the Young Americans for Liberty conference on Tuesday and he didn’t mention Gary Johnson’s name once. The former Texas Congressman who led the libertarian wing of the Republican Party during the 2012 election and ran on the Libertarian Party ticket in 1988 has shown no signs of endorsing Johnson. Paul didn’t even mention the Libertarian Party at all throughout the speech. “We don’t need a third party, we need at least a second party that will challenge [the] system,” he said suggesting that Democrats and Republicans are two sides of the same coin. Considered the grandfather of the liberty movement, Paul carries significant support among libertarians. With Johnson taking home 13 percent of the general election vote in a recent CNN poll , an endorsement from Ron Paul could help bump the former New Mexico governor over the 15 percent threshold needed to debate Clinton and Trump. Appearing on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” last month, Paul said that he’s not “enthralled” with any of the candidates in any party. Follow Dan On Twitter

86 There Is a Term for This Behavior I have coined another neologism to go along with those I have coined over the years. For instance, Kultursmog for a political culture utterly polluted by the left’s politics, Black Cat News Story for a news story that the mainstream media hope will sink a conservative candidate, Boy Clinton for you know who, Bruno for his wife whom a former director of the FBI likened to a member of organized crime. My coinage, at least for this election year, refers to those fussy conservatives who refuse to vote for Donald Trump. I call them Inadvertent Conservatives for Hillary. The Inadvertent Conservatives for Hillary refuse to vote for Donald after prolonged and very public scrupling over him, scrupling that verges upon exhibitionism. Thus they enter this election with half an argument. They fume very indignantly that Donald is rude and vulgar and flies around the country in his own Boeing 757. But this is an election year. Donald captured the Republican nomination, and so these indignados have to complete their argument. What do they do? After advancing half an argument their voices trail off. They speak of The Federalist Papers, of little children listening unchaperoned to Donald on their television sets. Possibly they speak of Adolf Hitler. Yes, that Adolf Hitler. They do not admit that their refusal to vote for Trump brings Hillary one vote closer to the White House. They do not say that their political calculation has made Bruno one vote more likely to reside at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, though she probably cannot pass a background check for her security clearance. Thanks to the Inadvertent Conservatives for Hillary, the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation is ever closer to its next few billions in donations, and the Founding Fathers’ edifice is ever closer to becoming a Banana Republic. What will the Inadvertent Conservatives for Hillary do if ever she enters the White House again? What will George Will say when President H. Clinton nominates Elizabeth Warren as the Supreme Court’s first Native American nominee? Or when she nominates Al Sharpton as the Court’s first vegan African American or when she nominates a tourist from the Brazilian rainforest as the Court’s first illegal alien? My guess is George will say, “It could have been worse.” He might muse that had Donald Trump become president he might nominate David Duke to the Supreme Court or that President Trump might employ dirty words in the State of the Union Address. I do not think you can ever catch an Inadvertent Conservative for Hillary at a loss for words, but that does not mean that he or she will adequately answer the objection that a vote against Trump or a refusal to vote for Trump is a vote for Hillary. Now, of course, the Inadvertent Conservatives for Hillary are not only against Trump. They are against his running mate too, Mike Pence. Once again their leader, George Will, is ahead of the pack, finding Pence insufficiently steadfast to conservative principle. Just this Sunday George found Pence “pliable” and he added something about Trump’s being an “aspiring torturer” and a “boastful adulterer.” Well, George, I suspect that is more candid than being a “surreptitious adulterer,” or how about a closet adulterer? The fact is that Pence is a solid conservative. I have known him for decades both in Indiana and Washington. He began as an evangelist for free markets at an Indiana think tank, one of the many state think tanks that are now sprinkled across America spreading conservative ideas. He later became a member of Congress and the chairman of the House Republican Conference from 209 to 2011, dark days for conservatives but they survived the Obama Terror. In 2010 he was spoken of as a conservative presidential contender, so he has been considered for the presidency before. In 2012 he was elected governor of Indiana and continued his predecessor Mitch Daniel’s work of transforming the Hoosier state into a model of conservative governance. His qualifications to succeed President Trump are all in order. As for his piety, he is a devout evangelical. One of the things about the Inadvertent Conservatives for Hillary is that very few of them have ever tried their hand at governing. Thus their sneers at compromise. I do not fear Pence’s selling out conservatism. I expect him to advance it, and never to get into a position where he has to be inadvertently for anything endangering the Republic.

Dear Abby: Single mom misses her aunts, uncles My problem is, I haven’t been able to face my family members since the birth of my second child. My family has strong Christian roots, and I know they were disappointed when they heard about another unplanned pregnancy. This isn’t the first time I have disappointed them. I smoked a lot of marijuana as a teen and young adult. I straightened my life out during my late 20s. I miss my family very much, and I also feel my children are missing out by not knowing them. My parents passed away many years ago. My children’s father was beaten to death days before my youngest daughter was born. If your family’s Christian roots are as strong as you say they are, they should be both welcoming and forgiving, and embrace your children in their loving family circle. However, if they are not, then it would be better for your little girls if they were not exposed to them. I have advised in the past that sometimes people have to live their own lives and create their own families. If your relatives are rejecting, that is what you will have to do, not only for your daughters’ sake but also for your own. We are having a problem with one member, “Gail,” who is envious of “Rose,” a still-beautiful former model. Gail has been making remarks that Rose “must have had work done” on her face to be able to retain her looks for so long. (I think it is a combination of good genes, sunscreen and incredible bone structure.) What Rose has or hasn’t done is none of Gail’s business. Rose is aware of Gail’s jealousy, and it puts a damper on our good times and our caring attitudes toward each other. We wish Gail would drop out. Her remarks need to stop. Good advice for everyone — teens to seniors — is in “The Anger in All of Us and How to Deal With It.” To order, send your name and mailing address, plus check or money order for $7 (U. 89 Two gunmen surrender in Armenia’s police station siege after brief shootout — RT News “Two members of the armed group which seized the police building in Yerevan, Gagik Egiazaryan and Aram Akopyan, have surrendered to police,” Aharonian said on Facebook. There was a gunfight at the police building and “as a result a police officer and Pavel Manukyan and his son Aram [both members of the armed group] were wounded.” All of the injured were transported to a nearby hospital. The gunfire has ended since then, and negotiations to free the police station are continuing. There are reports that around 30 people were detained by police at a rally near the building supporting the cause of the hostage takers. The armed group took control of the police station in the Erebuni district of Yerevan on July 17, taking several police officers hostage and killing one in the process. The group’s demands include the release of Armenian opposition figure Jirair Sefilyan, who was detained on June 20 after authorities allegedly uncovered a plot to seize several buildings and telecommunication facilities in Yerevan. Negotiations have been ongoing since. The local police chief, Valery Osipyan, was among those taken hostage, authorities have confirmed to Armenian news agency Arminfo. Last October, Jirayr Serfilyan and his opposition movement, “New Armenia,” announced that they would launch a “process of the civil disobedience and change of power.” “Achieving the shift of power only through elections is impossible; it can be achieved only by an armed rebellion of the people,” Sefilyan said at a public demonstration at the time. Scores of protesters supporting the radicals have clashed with police cordons surrounding the station, with dozens of injuries reported. Armenia’s deputy police chief, Unan Pogosyan, has addressed the opposition, calling on protesters not to “exacerbate the situation.” He also alleged that confrontation is being “provoked” from Yerevan. The nation’s security service has been referring to the hostage takers as “terrorists.” Meanwhile, a Russian MP has claimed that external forces may be involved in the recent violence in the region. 90 D. C. Felon Gets $100 Fine For Bribery A former District of Columbia official convicted of felony bribery will spend no time behind bars and pay a fine of only $100, according to the D. C. Office of Inspector General (IG). U. S. District Judge for the District of Columbia Amit Mehta recently sentenced former D. C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs contact representative Lucretia B. Barksdale to just three years’ probation — including 180 days home confinement — and 80 hours of community service. Barksdale used her official position to extort money from customers seeking business licenses and construction contracts, according to the IG. The judge sentenced Barksdale July 13, but the IG didn’t announce the sentencing until last week. (RELATED: Public School Residency Fraud Rampant In D. C.) D. C. Inspector General Daniel W. Lucas said behavior like Barksdale’s “will not be tolerated in the District.” “My office is committed to ensuring that District regulations are followed, the District’s limited resources are used effectively, and people who act against the District’s interests and engage in fraudulent behavior are brought to justice,” Lucas said. The IG did not say whether Barksdale was fired or resigned. The IG and Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated Barksdale’s case. Follow Kathryn on Twitter Send tips to [email protected] . 91 The American Spectator Reforming United Nations institutions is often a fool’s errand. Yet, the Obama Administration chooses to draw no lessons from its attempt to improve the UN Human Rights Council, which just concluded its 10th anniversary session this month. Ten years ago, the Human Rights Council was formed to replace its corrupt and discredited predecessor, the Human Rights Commission. Then-UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan described the Commission as having “cast a shadow on the reputation of the United Nations system as a whole” due to its biased selectivity, politicization, and corrupt efforts to shield its members from due scrutiny. It’s easy to see why. At its end, the Commission included six of the most politically repressive regimes — China, Cuba, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, and Vietnam. A genocide in Darfur was being perpetrated by Sudan, which had been elected a member of the Commission. The Syrian regime that has murdered tens of thousands of its own citizens was proposing to investigate U. S. war crimes in Iraq. And the U. S. itself had been kicked off the Commission. A satirist could scarcely conceive so perverse a record. But has its successor been an improvement? Despite Mr. Annan’s expressed the hope that the new Council’s membership would “have a solid record of commitment to the highest human rights standards,” in its first three years (2006-9), it eliminated probes into the serious human-rights abuses in Belarus, Congo, Cuba, Liberia, and Sudan. In that time, some 200,000 people were killed and 2.5 million displaced in Darfur alone. Yet, in 2009, despite the fact that the Council was proving no better than its predecessor, the Obama Administration took the U. S. into the new body. Why? The Obama Administration said it was seeking to moderate and improve the Council by promoting “universality, transparency and objectivity.” This, it contended, required America to be working inside the tent, rather than whinging outside it. With the Council’s tenth anniversary, it is timely to ask if any improvement been registered in the seven years since the U. S. joined it. The answer, again, however, is simply no. None of these nations has ever been the subject of a single Council resolution, let alone a special session. In contrast, the Council adopted 67 resolutions condemning free and democratic Israel –– more than half of the 128 resolutions it passed against the rest of world’s nations combined. In March alone, it moved five anti- Israel resolutions at the behest of serial rights abusers like Algeria, Cuba, and Sudan. Asian and African autocracies have also acted in tandem to minimize scrutiny of nations like Zimbabwe, a veritable human-rights Enron. Indeed, Freedom House has declared that 62% of the Council’s membership are unfree and non-democratic. No “solid record of commitment to the highest human rights standards” here. Little else is to be expected. Thanks to the priority it accords to representation based on geographical distribution, the Council has fewer democracies and more autocracies than its predecessor. Thus, non- democratic African and Asian regimes exercise an unbreakable controlling majority of 26 of the 47 seats. Consequently, U. S. opposition to the Council-commissioned Goldstone Report, which perverted international legal norms and procedures to find Israel guilty of war crimes in Gaza, did nothing to forestall or ameliorate this demonization of a fellow democracy — or prevent the UN General Assembly from endorsing it. The American presence on the Council did not stop it from favoring the membership of Iran, despite its record of public hangings of gays. To get Iran to withdraw its candidacy, the Obama Administration had to acquiesce in Iran being elected unopposed to the UN Commission of the Status of Women, to which it has since been re-elected. And despite objections from U. S. Ambassador Samantha Power, the Council re-elected as Council adviser Jean Ziegler, co-founder and recipient of the Muammar Qaddafi Human Rights Prize, whose recipients have included Venezuelan strongman Hugo Chavez, black supremacist Louis Farrakhan, and Holocaust denier Roger Garaudy. The only result of U. S. membership has been to taint it, while achieving next to nothing. The Council provides a halo effect for perverters of human rights and its own disreputable findings and publications. It legitimizes those who abuse human rights while defaming those who uphold them. Therefore, it would be better if free nations ceased to legitimize the Council with their participation and withdraw. The next president should do so without delay.

92 Donald Trump: The Conservative FDR Amity Shlaes, as usual, has gotten it right. Ms. Shlaes is author of a terrific book I read several years back titled The Forgotten Man: A New History of the and is now a presidential scholar at King’s College. In listening to Donald Trump’s acceptance speech, Shlaes, writing in the Wall Street Journal, picked up on the same thing I did — this passage of the Trump speech, bold print for emphasis: While I don’t have the Shlaes book at hand here in Philadelphia, she does a great job of summarizing the point of her book, so this excerpt from her column: The forgotten man emerged in the 1880s in the lectures of a Yale professor named William Graham Sumner. A Thomas Piketty in reverse, Sumner abhorred efforts to equalize society and offered an elegant equation: “As soon as A observes something which seems to him to be wrong, from which X is suffering, A talks it over with B, and A and B then propose to get a law passed to remedy the evil and help X. Their law always proposes to determine what C shall do for X or, in the better case, what A, B and C shall do for X. “C” is the forgotten man, declared Sumner, a kind of everyman who falls into no category: “He works, he votes, generally he prays—but he always pays—yes, above all, he pays.” Sumner, a classical liberal, believed that strong commerce helped the poor better than the best government benefit. “If you do anything for the Forgotten Man, you must secure him his earnings and savings, that is, you legislate for the security of capital and for its free employment,” Sumner wrote. … The forgotten man FDR sketched was not the universal “C” but “X,” the man, as Roosevelt put it, “at the bottom of the economic pyramid.” The key difference was that Roosevelt would single out specific groups, starting with the poor. FDR’s forgotten man was the opposite of Sumner’s. Roosevelt’s predecessor as the Democrats’ presidential nominee, Al Smith, objected to the switch. Smith, himself from the humblest of backgrounds, warned that highlighting class distinctions divided the country when it needed to pull together. “The Forgotten Man is a myth,” Smith said, “and the sooner he disappears from the campaign the better it will be for the country.” Shlaes is right. She is especially correct in noting that when FDR changed the Forgotten Man in this equation from “C” — the man who pays — to “X” — the guy who got government benefits parceled out to him — FDR’s economy cratered. “The forgotten footnote is that the economic outcome of FDR’s program vindicated Sumner. Remembering so many forgotten men meant forgetting the average worker. The slump that followed FDR’s spending blitz drove unemployment back into the high teens.” Exactly. So which “Forgotten Man” is Trump speaking of? I would suggest, based on his record as a capitalist, Trump is true to the vision of William Graham Sumner — and “C.” His running mate, Governor Mike Pence, delivered a eulogy for the late Jack Kemp on the floor of the House at Kemp’s death. Said Pence: “I will always say that I am, first and foremost, a “Jack Kemp Republican.” He also said this: As a legislator and a thought leader, Jack Kemp shaped a rising generation of leaders in both parties with his ideas about entrepreneurial capitalism, enterprise zones and equality. Those ideas were the driving force behind the economic policies of President Ronald Reagan and the welfare reform of the Republican Congress. His optimistic belief in the American dream — in the power of free markets and entrepreneurial capitalism — was a lodestar to millions of Americans. His devotion to ensuring equality of opportunity for every American regardless of race, creed or color helped ground the Republican Party in the true ideals of Lincoln. Add into the presence of Pence the support of ex-Reagan aide and economist Lawrence Kudlow, who says this in praising Pence’s selection: Down through the years, as a leader of the conservative House Republican Study Committee and later as the third-ranking member of the House Republican leadership team, he stood firm as a genuine and consistent conservative. On economic policy Pence has held to the key building block of growth. He is a budget hawk who voted against President George W. Bush’s fiscally bloated No Child Left Behind education bill and hyper- expensive Medicare prescription-drug bill. He said he would not support new middle-class entitlements. He was consistent. Just over ten years ago, Pence was voted conservative man of the year by Human Events. I did the interview and subsequent write-up. Pence described himself as “an unregenerate supply-sider” whose central aim is to marry supply-side tax cuts with strict spending restraint to expand the economy and get the budget into balance. A few years ago, Pence spoke to the Detroit Economic Club. He called for sound monetary reform, tax relief, access to American energy, regulatory reform, and trade. New York Sun editor Seth Lipsky reminds us that Trump has stood for a stable and reliable dollar, including a standard to back it up. Pence stands for these same things. In other words? Mike Pence — like Donald Trump — sees the Forgotten Man as “C” — the man who pays, believing with Jack Kemp and Ronald Reagan that as Sumner said: “If you do anything for the Forgotten Man, you must secure him his earnings and savings, that is, you legislate for the security of capital and for its free employment.” Without doubt the Forgotten Man is a centerpiece of the Trump campaign and would most assuredly be the focus of a Trump presidency. Which is another way of saying that Donald Trump may in fact turn out to be not another Reagan — but the conservative version of Franklin D. Roosevelt. As Democrats fight in Philadelphia with a bitter fury, casting themselves adrift from America in a convention that seeks repeatedly to keep dividing the country by class, race, and now gender and age, the GOP is in the process of discovering that with the nomination of Donald Trump — to borrow from FDR’s famous theme song — Happy Days Are Here Again.

NBA Commissioner Puts North Carolina in Play for Hillary As goes North Carolina so goes the nation? It is hard to imagine a scenario in which Donald Trump and the Republicans can win the election in November if they lose the Tar Heel State. With this as a backdrop, we are witnessing an incredible moment in the history of sports and politics in which NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is using his prestige and position in professional sports to help with his personal mission of getting Hillary Clinton elected President this fall. Much has been written about the NBA’s decision to move the NBA All-Star game out of Charlotte next season because of the passage of North Carolina’s House Bill 2, including by myself. For those of you safely hidden and out of harm’s way of the current culture war raging in America, North Carolina’s House Bill 2 simply stated is legislation that sets into law a bathroom policy for government facilities that would keep men out of women’s rooms and vice versa. Even if, for the sake of argument, we accepted Adam Silver’s false premise that this bill is discriminatory, the decision to move the All-Star game out of North Carolina is provocative and illogical unless there is an ulterior motive other than what is stated by the Commissioner. After all, as Congressman Robert Pittenger of North Carolina rightly pointed out in a letter to the NBA, the NBA is happy to play basketball in China where serious and lethal human rights and discriminatory practices abound on a daily basis. Or as Rep. Pittenger states it, “Is the NBA implying China’s abhorrent violation of basic human rights is acceptable, but North Carolina saying men shouldn’t use the girls’ locker room is a bridge too far? What is the NBA’s true priority? The unmistakable hypocrisy is clear to me.” With Charlotte now out of the picture, the NBA hasn’t yet announced which city will host the All-Star game in 2017, but we do know the game will be played in Los Angles in 2018. Are we seriously expected to believe that California, in comparison to North Carolina, is a paragon of legislative virtue? After all, this is California we are talking about, the birthplace of thousands of moonbat ideas and where it is mandatory for children to learn about “fluid gender identity.” So if there is no inherent logic to Commissioner Silver’s decision to pull the game from Charlotte, it leaves one to believe that the Commissioner’s motivation is nothing more than good old-fashioned backroom brass knuckle politics. Would it surprise you to learn that Adam Silver at one point in his life was legislative aide for a Democratic Congressman, and Silver is a campaign contributor to Hillary Clinton’s presidential run? Or that he is not alone in this regards in the Commissioner’s Office hierarchy, as the President and Vice President of the NBA, Kathy Behrens and Mark Aronson respectively, are also in camp Clinton ponying up money for Hillary’s presidential race. The role of the Commissioner in any major sports league can be complex and somewhat contradictory as they need to uphold what is in the best interest of the owners, players, and fans simultaneously. Clearly Silver is interested in none of that and would rather use not his personal clout but the NBA’s to try to portray conservatives in a bad light, fully aware that the punishment he is inflicting on North Carolina in a close election could cost both Governor Pat McCrory and Donald Trump their elections on November 8. Silver knows full well that by taking such drastic action as moving the game under the banner of civil rights, undecided voters who often just follow the headlines and not necessary the facts of the story will assume the headlines are correct and could vote accordingly, thereby punishing the Republican candidates. The press of course is more than obliging to this cause and has already lauded Silver as a great crusader and depicted conservatives in North Carolina as bigots. I imagine now that the genie is out of the bottle, other league commissioners will use their post to promote their petty personal political causes as well. Municipalities that don’t want their cities’ premium events held hostage by such pirating will need to be proactive moving forward. The next time a sports franchise comes knocking on their door looking to “partner” on a stadium or arena project, I would strongly suggest they negotiate in guarantees for such premium events in advance before handing over any funds, and make those event guarantees contingent upon any deal. If not, municipalities may find themselves not only millions of dollars out of pocket but also puppets to whatever whims men like Adam Silver can invent.

Mobile-first onward: James Connelly on why LA is important to Fetch's future Today, mobile agency Fetch, part of the Dentsu Aegis Network , officially celebrates the opening of their Los Angeles office. Announced last month, the office is being run by managing partner Rurairi McCuckin, formerly head of account strategy at Criteo, will oversee the agency’s client roster that includes Hulu and Apple Music. The agency has been successful in the US, with around 60 to 65 per cent of revenues coming from the market, and the new office will be in the burgeoning area of Playa Vista, west of Los Angeles. As has been their rallying position since inception, the agency sees tremendous opportunity in LA’s mobile market. “LA is quite interesting, because there seems to be a mobile-first entertainment economy popping up there. Lots of money being invested into LA, especially in that Playa Vista area,” said James Connelly, co- founder and CEO of Fetch , at the Postback event in Seattle. “We thought, ‘Well, we need to be there. We need to support our clients. There's going to be more demand for what we do.’ We are on this evolution from being a mobile-only company to a mobile-first company.” From being solely about mobile to having it take more of a front seat is a change that Connelly has seen in his time and, surprisingly, the traditional advertising world is the thread that weaves through the company’s future. “Instead of changing what we do, we've been evolving, because our day-to- day current business is growing 40 per cent year on year on top line and bottom line. We are still doing really well as a mobile company, but we want to be able to help our mobile-first customers think in a more mobile-first way,” said Connelly. “We can go to our mobile-first customers and say, ‘Wow, you are doing a really good job with mobile. Actually, can you really build a brand or can you really scale your proposition through mobile-only? Probably not.’ We look at our phones 144 times a day, but not all of those 144 moments are commercial opportunities. You can't get an advertising message within that real estate. The traditional advertising world, has about 3,000 commercial message opportunities a day. We are looking at maybe 100 versus 3,000. Businesses like Apple Music, like Hulu, like Uber, they need to be thinking about after digital advertising or mobile marketing, which everybody here (at Postback) is talking about — how do we drive music growth and music growth, but through traditional formats? That's the journey we are on.” Though the eyes of Fetch are on the traditional, Connelly feels strongly that the current system and process of buying and engaging with traditional advertising should be the polar opposite of “traditional.” “If you look at it in the traditional way, it's archaic,” noted Connelly. “We thought if we approach traditional media in a traditional way, it just doesn't really work for our mobile-first clients. We've been working over the last year on finding how to trade differently and not have to go through the whole upfront cycle. We've been looking at a data-first approach, so we are targeting individuals through traditional media, which is difficult to do — but not impossible — as opposed to a data-last approach, where an agency will do lots of inside planning: book a campaign, run a campaign, and then do a report at the end saying, ‘This is what we think happened.’ Whereas we are trying to say, ‘We are going to look at this on a daily basis, optimize it on a daily basis, and tell you every week how your campaigns are performing’.” This approach may rub some traditionalists the wrong way, but Connelly is sticking to his guns, eschewing the long-held way of selling on ratings and more 'traditional' metrics, especially as it relates to the 30-second spot, long the bastion of the advertising gravy train. “I just think it's bonkers that's what people revert to now. When, in fact, we know that today, individuals, their attention span lasts around 6 seconds,” said Connelly. “Why play them a 30-second ad? It just really doesn't make sense. There's things like that that have to change. Doing short form content. Stuff that people want to see. On the right platforms.” Though the 30-second ad may not necessarily have a fan in Connelly, he does acknowledge that longer-form, decent content and experiences still carry weight and can be highly effective. “You've got 6 seconds to ask the consumer if they want to learn more. Then, you want them to have as long a dwell time as possible,” said Connelly. “You want to create an experience. Instead of sending someone through to a fixed video, it might be an interactive website, or even an app, whatever it might be, where they can experience, they can share.” For Fetch, it’s all about mobile first — and seven years has unearthed tremendous insight. In the next seven years, though, Connelly posits that the digital marketing will “be everything” and that the next evolution could prove to be interesting. “From a Fetch perspective, I would imagine that we would have completely evolved. We probably won't even be talking about mobile. Even now, our interpretation of the mobile-first agency is to be the agency that understands the mobile consumer better than any other. I think in 7 years' time, it will be we figure out through data how consumers live their life and how to market towards them. I think we are going to be a more traditionalist, I hate to say it,” admitted Connelly. At the moment, though, Connelly has a clear path and vision for what’s right in from of him and Fetch. “Our job isn't to change the industry. Our job is to create value for our customers. I believe that value for our customers is going to be coming from disrupting the way that traditional media is bought to deliver new customers for them. That's what we'll start with.”

Congress MLA's remark on prostitution: Women's group demands apology Congress MLA Aslam Shaikh's remark on prostitution, recently made in the assembly, has drawn the ire of a woman's group. It has demanded that the politician apologise for his "derogatory" comment. The Malad MLA is, however, far from being contrite. Malad MLA Aslam Shaikh Shaikh had on July 22 said in the assembly that prostitution is rampant in Malwani. "He said prostitutes stand near bus stops and other public spaces, causing inconvenience to the 'normal' public. How dare he speak about Malwani women like that? If it's such a big problem, why does he, being an MLA, not solve it? Why talk about them in such a derogatory manner," asked a fuming Sultana Sheikh, vice-president of Mumbai Mahila Bachao Morcha, the BJP- backed group that filed a complaint against Aslam at the Malwani police station on Monday. The organisation has given him 24 hours to tender an apology, failing which it plans to start a morcha in front of the police station. 'Go to Kamathipura' A defensive Shaikh surmised that the organisation wants prostitution legalised. "In our culture, this kind of indecent behaviour will not be tolerated. And I know it is a debatable matter. I am not against the profession as such. They are supposed to be in places like Kamathipura and not in public places. This way, the safety of other women is being jeopardised," he said, adding that he has been complaining to the police for the past year, but "I have not seen any strict action being taken". Giving weight to his claims, the women's cell of St. Anthony's church, said locals often cannot differentiate between sex workers and other women. "Recently, I was coming out of the church with a friend when a guy came up to me and asked my 'price'," said Jill D'Souza, a member of the women's cell. To tackle prostitution, a police inspector suggested that the government come up with a plan that is more humane, rather than putting sex workers behind bars. "No doubt, prostitution is an anti-social activity, but the women have not come here for fun," he said. 'Drug abuse aided by Shakih' Malwani has also had a thriving drug abuse problem for years and the Mumbai Mahila Bachao Morcha alleged that it has taken on monstrous proportions with Shaikh's blessings. "We try to stop youngsters when we see them sniffing drugs and at times, warn them of police action. They, in turn, retort, 'Bhai dekh lega' (referring to Shaikh)," said Namrata Singh, resident of Malwani and vice-president of the Morcha.

Two other journalists, one from Mumbai and another from New Delhi, have also been asked to leave. This diarist attempted to meet her at her 14th floor apartment yesterday. Tung La answered the door, and when this diarist introduced herself as a reporter from mid-day, she seemed startled but allowed us into her home, after we presented our press card as identity. “Oh mid-day? Mumbai…” she said, while giving us entry. We spotted a gentleman and a few possessions being placed into huge cartons; clearly, the journalists were readying to leave. Tang Lu said, “I am not going to speak but hesitantly revealed, “I am from Beijing.” On further prodding, whether she had been in India for seven years, she replied, “No; one year, I came last year. You know more news; you have read it (sic),” struggling to speak in English, seated beside a table strewn with books, including one on Hindi grammar. She continued, “I cannot say anything,” and answered a phone call in Chinese. At that moment, she spotted this diarist click a picture on her phone, and snapped, “I think you should leave right now,” as the young man deleted the pictures from our phone.
