FROM THE PARISH COUNCIL PRESIDENT

. Dear Parishioners We start this month’s letter with a big THANK YOU to all that helped make the first “Drive Through Festival” a success! It took a lot to pull this off and we offer our extreme gratitude to the Festival Committee, and all those that helped with the planning, the setup, the cooking before and during, putting the meals together, the Philopto- chos ladies and all those that helped package the pastries, manning the order taking, running the registers and the delivery area, running the food from the kitchen to the front of the Hall, setting up the scheduled online pre-orders, restocking, and keeping all the areas clean, the very generous “Sponsors” and business owners that provided additional labor, the GOYA for contributing their popcorn sales to the festival, the tear down and cleaning after it was over, and of course the AHEPA for donating the proceeds from their raffle. We also thank all those that purchased dinners and pastries and promoted the Festival to their friends and neighbors! Many may have thought that there would not be as much help needed for the “Drive Through”, or that it may not have been as busy as it was, but in reality, it took a lot of manpower to pull it off. The volunteers are the backbone to making this work, and it was good to see a few new faces helping out. But the need is still great and the work should not fall on the same volunteers at every event. For all those that contributed their time and talents, you should be very proud of the work you did and it showed in the numerous positive comments on social media, with this one standing out the most: “I Wanted to give a shout out to the festival crew! You all are doing amazing job! Several people wanted me to share that you made the process so easy and organized. They were so impressed with all of the hard work!!” While the Drive Through Festival was a success, it still does not replace the income from the normal festival. In order to continue to move forward, additional fund-raising events will have to be held. The upcoming Golf Tournament is usually our second most important event. This year it was moved to November 17th due to the Covid-19 restriction earlier in the year. You and your businesses can support the Church, by “Sponsoring a Hole” and or putting a team together to play. It is a fun event with some great prizes. You can contact the Church office or go online to the Church Website to sign up!! On a final note, as mentioned in last months Voice, a General Assembly meeting will be scheduled very soon. In order to keep all safe and continue to follow social distancing guidelines, the Metropolis has given permis- sion to conduct the meeting in Church following the Liturgy. Information on the date and agenda will be sent out soon. The Parish Council would like to again thank all for their donations (time, talents, and treasures) during these times, and only ask that you continue to give as you can. If you have not yet completed a Stewardship form for 2020 please do so. Online donations and Stewardship payments are also available, at https://st-john-the- baptist-myrtle-beach-light-a-candle.square.site/ If you have any questions about the needs of the Church, please contact either myself or our Treasurer, Chris Theodore. In Christ Perry Koustenis

Letter from our Festival Chairman

A huge Thank You to all of you who supported our very first drive thru festival. After months of planning we found out that this concept is a very successful way to raise money for our church. We have a beautiful church and an amazing fellowship hall. Both of these buildings incorporate a lot of maintenance. This means we need to make sure we can bring in the income to support both build- ings.

We have a nice size Greek Orthodox community. It saddens me and others to witness the lack of sup- port we receive from the majority of our own community when it involves working at our fundrais- ers. If everyone could donate a couple of hours it would take the burden off of a handful of volun- teers. With less and less volunteers, there will come a time that the church won’t be here. Only a handful of people are showing up. We will do the best we can for now, but in time we will not be able to continue to do this ourselves. I agree that some people are unable to come and help, but I al- so feel the majority of our community can get involved. Shame on any of you who choose to not work for your church! I have heard that some of you don’t come because you weren’t asked to come. That is viewed as an excuse! God welcomes everybody to work for him! Remember-you’re not working for the committee, you are working for your church. The majority of the people who come and help at our fundraisers are over the age of 55. We’re on a downhill spiral of seeing the demise of our faith unless the rest of our community steps up to the plate and starts working for our church.

Again- a big thank you to the community for a successful festival! We are beginning to plan another one in a few months. Those who are able to help please consider joining us at the next one. We have fun together and it brings great fellowship amongst us!

Sincerely, Penny Vlandis Festival Chair

14 15 CHAMPION 2020 NOVEMBER NEWSLETTER

News from Atlanta -On October 9th, The Mother Church Offers a New Vision to the Archdiocese of America. The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, wanting to strengthen the role of the largest Eparchy of the Mother Church with a new vision and a new Charter suitable for the evolving and changing modern pastoral needs of American society, decided to place the current Charter (2003) of the Holy Archdiocese of America into abeyance. Temporarily, until the issuance of the new Charter, the administrative structures of the Archdio- cese, i.e., the Holy Eparchial Synod, the Executive Committee, the Archdiocesan Council, the Clergy-Laity As- sembly, as well as the respective structures of the Metropolises will continue to function as they are. For more information please visit the Atlanta Diocese Site.

October 6, 2020 A strong majority, thirty-eight, of the fifty-one canonical Orthodox Bishops in the United States of America began their two-day meeting today to discuss Orthodox Christian Unity in the country. The meeting, which took place online due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, was the first since the transition of the chair- manship to Archbishop Elpidophoros. Go to the atlanta diocese site to read the full address. The Assembly of Bishops, comprised of the 51 canonical Orthodox Bishops in the United States of America, is the premier and official forum for Orthodox Christian Unity in the United States of America. Its purpose is to preserve and con- tribute to the unity of the Orthodox Church by helping to further her spiritual, theological, ecclesiological, ca- nonical, educational, missionary and philanthropic aims. Recognizing the youth as the future of the Church, the Assembly of Bishops declared 2021 the Year of the Youth. A number of initiatives are expected to be launched that will bring together Orthodox Youth from across the nation.

A big Thank you to each and everyone who went far and beyond in their efforts in helping out and supporting our Church, making our Drive Through Festival a success. Nothing like a real outdoor Festival, however, our Love, Faith, and devotion did show and shine through our masks. BRAVO!

Wishes for a Blessed Thanksgiving and virtual hugs to all.

Linda Moustakis, Champion
