CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

In this chapter, the researcher wants to discuss some topics such as research background, research problem, research objectives, scope and limitation, research significance, and definition of the key term. Each topic would be presented as follows.

1.1 Research Background

Language is one of the important things in human life. Language functions as a communication tool, expressing feelings, expressing opinions, ideas, and emotions. Humans use language differently, some are oral or written, and directly or implied. Language is a symbol of a system used by humans to communicate or convey an expression to others (Rabiah, 2012). The human cannot live without language, because human and language are bonded to each other. One form of language expression that is often used is in the form of literature. As mentioned by

Cuddon, literature is a term that usually refers to works such as drama, lyrics, novels, and short stories (Wille, 2016). Usually, writers of literary works use beautiful or implied language to express their feelings. The language used to beautify a literary work is usually called a figurative language. They use beautiful language styles to make work such as books, novels, songs and so on. We can see literature is a work that contains beauty. To make a beautiful and interesting work, the writer must pay attention to the choice of words when compiling the work. To make his work more interesting, writers usually use implied language or in another language called figurative language.

1

Figurative language is a combination of several phrases that have different meanings from the literal meaning (Lee, 2018). Based on Holman and Harmon

(1992), states that figurative language is a deliberate deviation of the meaning of words to create a literary work to build the effect of the imagination of the reader while reading in order to illustrate the feelings or circumstances that the writer wants to tell. Figurative language is usually used in literary works such as novels, movies, music, lyrics, poetry, and other literary works.

Music is one of the literary works that we usually listen to every day. Music can be enjoyed by all ages and can be heard anytime and anywhere whether in feelings of sadness or happy. Based on Tagg (2002), music is a form of communication between humans that uses a non-verbal voice that is organized with a tone that is considered as a tool to convey feelings (emotional). A song usually has the meaning to be conveyed by the songwriter. According to Dryden (2012), music or song contains several components such as stanza, rhythm, theme, figurative language, lyrics, meaning, and message. Music or a song is a feeling that the writer wants to convey through the lyrics that are quite short and poetic.

Songwriting is an activity of writing song lyrics that are directly related to personal experience. Astor (2018), alluding that the songwriter is not a poet and also the song lyrics are not poems. Songwriter must be very creative in choosing the words he uses in the song's lyrics. To create an effect of beauty and meaning in the song, usually, the author uses figurative language. This figurative language will later make a song memorable and have the meaning of the words obtained by the listener.

2

In the previous year, several researchers conducted figurative language research focusing on song lyrics as their research theme. Three of them were

Ratnasari (2019), Meuthea (2019), and Arobikum (2019). Ratnasari (2019) found six kinds of figurative languages in the song lyrics of Disney’s animation film. The next researcher, Meuthea (2019) explained in her thesis that fourteen kinds of figurative languages were used in the lyrics of “Chained to The Rhythm” by Katy

Perry. Arobikum (2019) with a thesis entitled “Figurative Language on Kodaline

Album Coming Up for Air”, found sixty-seven figurative languages.

The researcher is interested in doing this research because this album was inspired by the Freudian theory popularized by Sigmund Freud, a psychotherapist whose theory explains about humans and their subconscious ranging from desire, lust, reflexes, will, curiosity, conflict, instincts, and dreams as contained in the tenth song in this album. Like the explanation of the Freudian theory, these ten songs display a lot of lust, dreams, conflicts in which the songwriter wants to convey that in a relationship there must be ups and downs. Starting from those who love to adore, want to be together, fear of loss until there is conflict and, in the end, they separate. Besides that, in the lyrics of the song uses many different words from the words commonly used in the daily. The language used is a figurative language that has meaning when interpreted. The researcher will examine ten songs in the album Daniel Caesar, entitled Get You, Best Part, Hold Me Down,

Neu Roses, Loose, We Find Love, Blessed, Take Me Away, Transform, and

Freudian.

The focus of this research is the figurative language used and the meanings can be inferred from the figurative language that has been obtained. Therefore, the

3

researcher is interested in analyzing the figurative language for the thesis entitled

"An Analysis of Figurative Language Used In Daniel Caesar Debut Album Entitled

Freudian".

1.2 Research Problems

From what is explained by the researcher in the research background, the

researcher gets two points of problems that will be the focus of this research. The

two points are as follows.

1. What is the figurative language used in Daniel Caesar’s debut album entitled

“Freudian”?

2. What is the type meaning of figurative language found in Daniel Caesar’s

debut album entitled “Freudian”?

1.3 Research Objectives

Related to research problems, the researcher has two points about research

objectives as written below:

1. To know and to be able to find out the figurative language used in Daniel

Caesar’s debut album entitled “Freudian”.

2. To know what kind of meaning used and to describe the meaning of figurative

language found in Daniel Caesar’s debut album entitled “Freudian”.

1.4 Scope and Limitation

This research specialize in the figurative language found on Daniel Caesar's

debut album titled Freudian. More specifically, this research focuses on the various

figures of speech and the meaning of each figurative language found. The limit of

this research is ten songs on the debut album of Daniel Caesar, entitled Freudian.

4

1.5 Research Significance

The researcher hopes this research is useful to increase understanding of the figurative language used in song lyrics on Daniel Caesar's debut album entitled

Freudian. It is also hoped that this research will be useful for future researchers who are interested in literature, figurative language, especially in song lyrics. Another benefit expected by the researcher is to apprehend the meaning of the figurative language found and this thesis can be used by the students' to increase their vocabulary and the meaning of figurative language.

1.6 Definition of Key Terms

To keep away from misunderstanding and ambiguity the researcher wants to write down a few keywords which will be explained as follows.

1. Figurative Language, is the language used in non-literal used to achieve a

specific meaning (Strein, 2012). Figurative language is often used for verbal

exchange inclusive of conversation, teacher talk, and written text. In other

words, figurative language is a tool to convey messages indirectly where the

recipient of the message must think first to get the meaning of the message from

the messenger.

2. Lyric, are one of the dramatic monologues created by means of literary writers

who use fictional elements and representations of ritualistic poetic discourse

features, such as sound patterns, lyric addresses, and the lyric present tense.

There are a number of song lyrics whose lyrics had been crafted from whom,

for whom the song was created, and what situation the writer created within the

lyrics. (Culler, 2017). The lyrics are a collection of phrases that sometimes

rhyme and can be sung where the collection of phrases has a meaning

5

3. Song, is a combination of lyrics and instruments. The two combinations

commonly have an emotional that means (Thompson & Russo, 2004). in other

words, a song is a collection of lyrics that can be sung where the lyrics are

obtained from the personal experience of the author or his fantasy.

4. Freudian, is an album that become launched on August 25, 2017, by Golden

Child Recordings as the debut studio album of Canadian singer and songwriter

named Daniel Caesar. This album contains ten songs entitled Get You, Best

Part, Hold Me Down, Neu Roses, Loose, We Find Love, Blessed, Take Me
