To overcome this challenge, we use data from professional soccer, where employees of the same club face different external career opportunities de- pending on their nationality. We test whether the career prospect of being selected to a Euro Cup national team affects players' pre-Cup performances, using nationals of countries that did not participate in the Euro Cup as a control group. We find that the Euro Cup career prospect has positive effects on the performances of play- ers with intermediate chances of being selected to their national team, but negative effects on the performances of players whose selection is very probable.

Italy had taken the lead through an Ernie Brandts own goal but Brandts himself restored parity before Arie Haan struck the Netherlands' winner. • Italy have held the upper hand over the ensuing three decades, during which they have recorded two draws and six wins against the Oranje, including a penalty shoot-out triumph following a goalless semi-final at UEFA EURO 2000™. • Despite playing against ten men from the 34th minute when Gianluca Zambrotta was sent off, the tournament co-hosts paid the price for two missed penalties during normal time.

  • How a Soccer Star Is Made
How a Soccer Star Is Made By MICHAEL SOKOLOVE The youth academy of the famed dutch soccer club Ajax is grandiosely called De Toekomst – The Future. Set down beside a highway in an unprepossessing district of Amsterdam, it consists of eight well-kept playing fields and a two-story building that houses locker rooms, classrooms, workout facilities and offices for coaches and sports scientists. In an airy cafe and bar, players are served meals and visitors can have a glass of beer or a cappuccino while looking out over the training grounds. Everything about the academy, from the amenities to the pedigree of the coaches – several of them former players for the powerful Dutch national team – signifies quality. Ajax once fielded one of the top professional teams in Europe. With the increasing globalization of the sport, which has driven the best players to richer leagues in England, Germany, Italy and Spain, the club has become a different kind of enterprise – a talent factory. It manufactures players and then sells them, often for immense fees, on the world market. —All modern ideas on how to develop youngsters begin with Ajax,“ Huw Jennings, an architect of the English youth-development system, told me. —They are the founding fathers.“ In America, with its wide-open spaces and wide-open possibilities, we celebrate the —self-made athlete,“ honor effort and luck and let children seek their own course for as long as they can – even when that means living with dreams that are unattainable and always were. The Dutch live in a cramped, soggy nation made possible only because they mastered the art of redirecting water.

  • Running with a Coyote
Poetics and the Beautiful Game David Kilpatrick Soccer fans often claim their sport is “the beautiful game.” But anyone who has ever played or watched the sport must concede that not all games are beautiful. The history of soccer tactics can be characterized as the tension between creative and result-driven ambitions. Whether or not a side emphasizes the objective of scoring or the objective of not being scored upon, the means employed to achieve either or both objectives is often a source of debate among pundits and punters. “Its football, not figure skating” is a popular phrase that dismisses the ideal in favor of a more practical approach. The will-to-win often negates creativity and sporting expression; the “best team” doesn’t always win. Nonetheless, such a result can be pleasing, even to the neutral disinterested spectator. Soccer isn’t a judged sport—the winner isn’t determined by ideal spectators whose trained eyes allow them to discern the truly great from the merely good. How then can we account for a well played game if an anti-aesthetic approach achieves the pleasurable result? Is there a method we can employ that will help determine the aesthetic quality of soccer games? Throughout this summer’s FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the use of the word “drama” was de rigueur, if non-reflective, among the professional commentators in various media. This wasn’t a critique of the “bad acting” on the part of players appealing for fouls but to convey the tension and excitement of the games as the tournament’s narrative unfolded.
