Older Kids Leader Guide 186 Unit 24 • Session 3 © 2020 LifeWay LEADER Bible Study Jesus had just fed more than five thousand people on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. After sending away the people and directing His disciples to go back across the sea, Jesus went to a mountain to pray. It was late, and He sought to be alone with His Father. Jesus was preparing to fulfill His Father’s plan. Before long, He would die on the cross and rescue people from sin. While Jesus prayed, the disciples struggled to cross the sea. A storm came and tossed their boat up and down. They didn’t make any progress against the waves. Then, in the early morning hours, they saw a figure walking toward them on the water. They thought it was a ghost, but it was Jesus! Peter asked Jesus to command him to come out on the water, and Jesus 3 called to him. Peter walked on the water too—until he remembered the storm. Peter took his eyes off of Jesus, and he began to sink. Peter cried out to Jesus, “Save me!” Jesus took Peter by the hand, and they got into the boat. The wind and waves calmed. Though Peter had doubted, the disciples worshiped Jesus. Clearly He was no ordinary man; this was the Son of God—the promised Messiah! Jesus proved that He can be trusted. His miracles, teaching, death, and resurrection showed that He is who He says He is. As you teach kids, encourage them to look to Jesus in faith every day. We can seek Him for our salvation and for help as we live in this world. Even in the midst of fear and doubt, we can hold out our empty hands and cry, “Lord, save me!” He will answer, and we can respond in worship of our Lord and Savior. Welcome time Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Use this time fill out attendance sheets, and help new kids connect to your group. Prompt kids to share about a time they stayed up late. Have they ever stayed up past 3 a.m.? Explain that in today’s Bible story, Jesus’ disciples were in a boat on the water overnight. Give each team five paper plate “rocks” and one beach towel “log.” Tell kids that the rocks are heavy, and kids cannot throw or slide them but may pick them up and pass them. If a player steps into the “water” at any point, the whole team must begin again. Give kids a minute to discuss their strategy and then allow a few minutes for teams to try to cross the river using the equipment provided. For an added challenge, explain that if a rock is in the water without anyone standing on it, the rock is swept away by the river and becomes unusable. SAY • Great job working together to cross the river. Do you know what would have been easier? If you could have walked on the water! That’s what Jesus did in the Bible story we will hear today. Jesus the Miracle-Worker 191 © 2020 LifeWay The Gospel: God’s Plan for Me Ask kids if they have ever heard the word gospel. Clarify that the word gospel means “good news.” It is the message about Christ, the kingdom of God, and salvation. Use the following guide to share the gospel with kids. God rules. Explain to kids that the Bible tells us God created everything, and He is in charge of everything. Invite a volunteer to read Genesis 1:1 from the Bible. Read Revelation 4:11 or Colossians 1:16-17 aloud and explain what these verses mean. We sinned. Tell kids that since the time of Adam and Eve, everyone has chosen to disobey God. (Romans 3:23) The Bible calls this sin. Because God is holy, God cannot be around sin. Sin separates us from God and deserves God’s punishment of death. (Romans 6:23) God provided. Choose a child to read John 3:16 aloud. Say that God sent His Son, Jesus, the perfect solution to our sin problem, to rescue us from the punishment we deserve.

    THE GOSPEL OF JOHN Small Group Discussion Guide Text: John 6:15-21 Theme/ Big Idea: Jesus is “I Am” who comes offering peace in the midst of chaos and life in the midst of death. Context/ Background Information: In John 6:1-14, Jesus miraculously provided bread in the wilderness. According to Matthew and Mark, “immediately after” feeding the 5,000 Jesus made the disciples get into a boat while he remained behind to disperse the crowds and pray (Matt 14:22-33; Mark 6:45-52). John 6:15 provides a likely motive for moving so quickly to send the disciples away. In verse 15, the crowds wanted to “take him by force and make him king.” Remarkably, Jesus’ actions reveal he is not interested in being the earthly king the people wanted nor was he interested in his disciples adopting the perspective of the crowd. Instead, we are told Jesus withdrew to the mountain by himself. Rather than fulfill their expectations and become the king they wanted, Jesus is concerned with being the king they desperately need. Think about it, if ever there was a time to fall in line with the expectations of the people and attempt to overthrow Rome, it was when 10 to 15,000 people were ready to make Jesus king. Yet Jesus resisted their expectations and withdrew. The reason, according to John 18:36, is because Jesus’ “kingdom is not of this world.” Rome is infinitely too small a throne for him. Jesus is the King of Kings, the Lord of Hosts and John captures that vividly in the miracle of Jesus walking on the water.

    WALKING ON WATER Date: March 28, 2020 Scripture: Matthew 14:22-36; Mark 6:45-54 Good Morning! My name is Stephen Perry and I serve as the pastor of student ministry here at The Church of Eleven22. As you know, this Lent season we are working through some of the miracles of Jesus shared with us across the gospel accounts. We are looking at how each of these miracles points us to the greatest of all miracles, which is the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. The miracle of Jesus we are focused on today is found in Matthew 14:22-36 and Mark 6:45-54 and I want to read through those now. 22 Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up on the mountain by himself to pray.     Zoom Service 9/8/20 Matthew 14: 22-33 Jesus walking on water I hope you can all see the picture I have up on my Computer screen I will try and hold it steady for you whilst I talk. The water seems very inviting at the moment and most of us would love to be peter in the cool water of the Lake but if you have ever been to galilee you will know how stormy and choppy the sea or lake can get when the wind blows. If most of us came across this picture in a gallery we would immediately think of the passage from Matthew’s Gospel. The account of Jesus walking on water. Remember our Gospel reading today and reflect on the picture. How has the artist interrupted the story. • He or she has depicted the water as choppy we can see plenty of white at the top of the deep bluey -green waves, • the fishing boat in the distance is leaning over • we can see the frightened expressions of the other disciples in the boat. • Peter has sunk to his waste and his arm is outstretched towards Jesus. • Jesus has grasped Peter’s hand with his left hand but what of Jesus right hand • With his right hand you can just about see that Jesus reassuring holds on the Peter’s elbow. • A double hold just to reassure Peter he holds him fast and firm, he will not sink. • Jesus’ face is calm and untroubled but I am not sure how the artist intends us to see how Peter is feeling.

Others contend Jesus was really walking near the shore in the shallow water, but because of the limited light thought they saw someone walking in the water. 7. None of these theories are based on the facts presented by the gospel writers, but are prompted by the intense desire to deny the miracles of Christ. 8. None of these theories explain Peter walking on the water, the boat immediately reaching land from the middle of the sea, the instant cessation of the storm when Christ entered the boat. 9. All of these theories attempt to strip everything supernatural out of the gospel accounts and destroy the credibility of the apostles and gospel writers. 10. They all seek to make the disciples dupes or liars. 11. It is very important that Christians be able to show the weaknesses of these theories. 12. Unprepared Christians are easy prey for those hostile to Christ and Christianity. 13. Christians must be ready to give answer to those who deny or challenge God’s word.

Let’s create a storm in here: o Wind begins to rustle: rub hands together o Raindrops: snap your fingers o Thunder and rain start: hit your thighs with hands o The storm gets worse: stomp your feet while you hit your thighs with your hands • Quiet the storm before you head to large group: o The storm calms to just thunder and rain: hit your thighs with your hands (no stomping) o Thunder stops: snap your fingers to show raindrops are falling o Rain stops: rub your hands together to make the sound of a calm wind • Repeat until it’s time to go to Large Group; just make sure to end with calm!
