I love that we partner in ministry together wherever the Lord leads. I am extremely grateful to see our sons, Dylan and Kaden, growing in Christ daily. Each stage of life has been exciting, and I treasure the memories we have all made together. I am thankful for the godly heritage passed down to me from my parents, Charlton and Paulette Lewis. They taught by example to be a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. They have been a source of encouragement throughout my entire life, especially during this season. Lorinda Roberts Columbia, Maryland May 2018 vi CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION According to the Bible, Christian parents are given the challenging yet rewarding task of teaching their children scriptural truths.1 Christian parents must not rely entirely on the church to undertake their children’s biblical training. Parents living within the biblical covenant must understand their sacred mandate and thus lead their children as the primary disciple-makers in the home. Christian parents desire to witness their children in a right relationship with God and continually growing in their faith. However, many Christian parents are ill-equipped to lead their children spiritually.2 In the absence of an effective model, parents are likely to become frustrated or quit the process altogether. John Wesley (1703–1791), minister of the eighteenth century, offered practical teachings for many spiritual disciplines. In particular, Wesley adhered to a model that some specialists3 refer to as the formative reading of Scripture.4 In this method, Wesley 1Prov 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.” Deut 6:6-7 says, “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. Eerdmans, 2006). 4Wesley’s formative reading of Scripture can be found in the preface of his commentary on the Old Testament in John Wesley, Notes on the Old Testament: Genesis to Ruth (Bristol, England: William 1 outlines a few simple steps that, when practiced, provide an opportunity to transform the lives of those who participate. Parents seeking to train their children biblically can use Wesley’s methods for the formative reading of Scripture. Using this model under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, there is an opportunity for children and parents alike to witness transformation in their spiritual lives. Familiarity with the Literature Wesley was a prolific writer. The Works of John Wesley, compiled through Abingdon Press, contains more than twenty volumes of Wesley’s sermons, journals, and letters.5 Wesley’s sermons that specifically deal with the importance of Scripture in the life of a believer, such as “The Scripture Way of Salvation” and “Scriptural Christianity,” were of interest for this thesis. In addition, I have used the later volumes to include portions of his journal and diaries, especially those writings that contain information dealing with his view of the Word. Using various portions of Wesley’s writings, one finds helpful information related to his personal life, practices, and family relationships. Further, Wesley offers readers specific instructions on how to read the Word in his preface to the Old Testament Notes.6 As one studies Wesley’s guide for reading the Bible, one may see a plan arise worth noting and sharing with others, especially those ministering to families and children. For many years, analysts have been interested in Wesley’s writings. Authors such as John Telford, Richard Heitzenrater, and Anthony Headley look extensively at Wesley’s writings, especially as it relates to his childhood and family experiences.7 Pine, 1765), 8-9; and John Wesley, “Preface to Sermons on Several Occasions,” in John Wesley, ed. Many have discovered the close bond Susanna shared with her children, in particular with John. Some writers focused their attention on the way she taught her children Scripture.8 Learning more about this relationship is a beginning point for understanding Wesley’s concern for the Word as well as its significant influence throughout his life. Other reviewers, such as Randy Maddox and Kenneth Collins, focus their attention on Wesley’s writings centered on theology and holy living.9 The findings and writings of the various researchers demonstrate links between Wesley’s early childhood experiences and Wesley’s works related to Scripture. Connecting these writings aid families in the discipleship process. A recent book Wesley, Wesleyans, and Reading the Bible as Scripture, focuses on Wesley’s method of reading and interpreting the Bible.10 The book uncovers Wesley’s method of reading the Word for spiritual formation. Though not an exact replica, his approach has been likened unto the ancient practice of lectio divina, as he instructs people to prayerfully and meditatively take time every day to read from the Bible, allowing the Holy Spirit to speak through the process for the purpose of spiritual change and growth.11 Uncovering Wesley’s method for Scripture reading, one finds that Heitzenrater, The Elusive Mr. Wesley (Nashville: Abingdon, 1984); Anthony Headley, Family Crucible: The Influence of Family Dynamics in the Life and Ministry of John Wesley (Eugene, OR: Wipf and Stock, 2010). 8Several authors closely examine Susanna’s method of teaching her children Scripture. I am not a trained historian but have tried hard to base my description in contemporary evidence rather than hearsay.

    A Brief History of Christ Church MEDIEVAL PERIOD Christ Church was founded in 1546, and there had been a college here since 1525, but prior to the Dissolution of the monasteries, the site was occupied by a priory dedicated to the memory of St Frideswide, the patron saint of both university and city. St Frideswide, a noble Saxon lady, founded a nunnery for herself as head and for twelve more noble virgin ladies sometime towards the end of the seventh century. She was, however, pursued by Algar, prince of Leicester, for her hand in marriage. She refused his frequent approaches which became more and more desperate. Frideswide and her ladies, forewarned miraculously of yet another attempt by Algar, fled up river to hide. She stayed away some years, settling at Binsey, where she performed healing miracles. On returning to Oxford, Frideswide found that Algar was as persistent as ever, laying siege to the town in order to capture his bride. Frideswide called down blindness on Algar who eventually repented of his ways, and left Frideswide to her devotions. Frideswide died in about 737, and was canonised in 1480. Long before this, though, pilgrims came to her shrine in the priory church which was now populated by Augustinian canons. Nothing remains of Frideswide’s nunnery, and little - just a few stones - of the Saxon church but the cathedral and the buildings around the cloister are the oldest on the site. Her story is pictured in cartoon form by Burne-Jones in one of the windows in the cathedral. One of the gifts made to the priory was the meadow between Christ Church and the Thames and Cherwell rivers; Lady Montacute gave the land to maintain her chantry which lay in the Lady Chapel close to St Frideswide’s shrine.

Walker This dissertation is a study of the loyalist Church of England clergy in the American Revolution. By reconstructing the experience and identity of this largely-misunderstood group, it sheds light on the relationship between church and empire, the role of religious pluralism and toleration in the American Revolution, the dynamics of loyalist politics, and the religious impact of the American Revolution on Britain. It is based primarily on the loyalist clergy’s own correspondence and writings, the records of the American Loyalist Claims Commission, and the archives of the SPG (the Church of England’s missionary arm). The study focuses on the New England and Mid-Atlantic colonies, where Anglicans formed a religious minority and where their clergy were overwhelmingly loyalist. It begins with the founding of the SPG in 1701 and its first forays into America. It then examines the state of religious pluralism and toleration in New England, the polarising contest over the proposed creation of an American bishop after the Seven Years’ War, and the role of the loyalist clergy in the Revolutionary War itself, focusing particularly on conflicts occasioned by the Anglican liturgy and Book of Common Prayer.

Although Wesley was not isolated from his enlightened age, historians of the Enlightenment and theologians of John Wesley have only recently begun to consider Wesley in the historical context of the Enlightenment. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the complex relationship between a man, John Wesley, and an intellectual movement, the Enlightenment. As a comparative history, this study will analyze the juxtaposition of two historiographies, Wesley studies and Enlightenment studies. Surprisingly, Wesley scholars did not study John Wesley as an important theologian until the mid-1960s. Moreover, because social historians in the 1970s began to explore the unique ways people experienced the Enlightenment in different local, regional and national contexts, the plausibility of an English Enlightenment emerged for the first time in the early 1980s. As a result, in the late 1980s, scholars began to integrate the study of John Wesley and the Enlightenment. In other words, historians and theologians began to consider Wesley as a serious thinker in the context of an English Enlightenment that was not hostile to Christianity.

  • Pennsylvania Female College in Harrisburg
    Papers Relating to Harrisburg Women At first glance this section might appear to be papers written by women of Harrisburg – but in the English tradition the Christian name Beverly was employed for males. Accordingly, the first author, Beverly R. Waugh, was not a female – in fact he named his daughter Beverlina, which was then the accepted feminized form of the name. In truth, Beverly R. Waugh is the collector and not the author of the articles presented in the first paper. The material reproduced in this volume of The Chronicle has been selected from a scrapbook kept by Mr. Waugh during his tenure as principal of Pennsylvania Female College in Harrisburg. While the scrapbook likely remained in the possession of Mrs. Waugh until her death in 1908, no one can account for its whereabouts for almost 100 years. It was purchased by the conference archives last year from a Camp Hill antiques dealer, who had recently acquired it from a collector of local memorabilia – in whose Harrisburg attic it had been stored for some unknown period of time. Hidden between the lines of the articles is a most revealing picture of the place of females in mid nineteenth century America. Following the lead article that paints a broad picture, the remaining papers present in chronological order more detailed examinations of particular Harrisburg females and their Methodist involvements. Each is based on a document housed in the conference archives. Taken together they lead the reader on a journey through the eyes of area females from the days of the earliest circuit rider to the modern era.

More than a church history, this study explores the relationship between non-religious and religious society, the tensions inherent in to relationship, and the ethical questions that emerged from that tension. As Methodism evolved in the South, it took on regional social practices and affectations while also maintaining a denominational identity that opposed southern culture. Southern Methodists served two masters—the church and society— and both demanded obedience to divergent visions of masculinity and manhood. Although they rejected many manly pursuits, ministers adopted a proslavery ideology and patriarchal practices and reflected southern attitudes in their church doctrine and structure. My study argues that the ethical shift that occurred in the southern Methodist Church in the 1840s resulted from the dual demands of southern and denominational culture, which led them to construct their own vision of masculine identity. Jennings, at that time one of llie most sehol- arly men of the Church, was selected to do the work.     Vision Statement by the Discipleship Council in Response to Legislation Enacted During the 2019 General Conference Grounded in Love “I pray that according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love.” (Ephesians 3:16-17 NRSV) The Apostle Paul’s prayer for the church in Ephesus reminds us that God’s people grow in faith and love toward God and one another when we are firmly rooted in the love of God made known to us through Jesus Christ. This is true for all seasons of life, but especially so in this present moment of challenge and distress for The United Methodist Church. As the birthplace of Methodism in the United States, the people of the Baltimore-Washington Conference seek to ground ourselves in God’s love through the Holy Scriptures and our commonly held Wesleyan beliefs. We grieve the deep sorrow and pain we have caused one another by failing to love one another as God has loved us, and all the ways we have neglected to place love, justice and mercy at the forefront of our walk with God. We lament that differences over interpretation of Scripture have resulted in brokenness in our denomination and conflict over our understanding of Christ’s call to include fully the marginalized and oppressed in the life of the Church. We recognize that our conference and our churches hold a myriad of views on the issue of human sexuality and many other issues.

Maddox John Wesley made a regular practice of recording in his diary the books that he was reading, which has been a significant resource for scholars in considering influences on his thought.1 If Charles Wesley kept such diary records, they have been lost to us. However, he provides another resource among his surviving manuscript materials that helps significantly in this regard. On at least four occasions Charles compiled manuscript catalogues of books that he owned, providing a fairly complete sense of his personal library around the year 1765. Indeed, these lists give us better records for Charles Wesley’s personal library than we have for the library of brother John.2 The earliest of Charles Wesley’s catalogues is found in MS Richmond Tracts.3 While this list is undated, several of the manuscript hymns that Wesley included in the volume focus on 1746, providing a likely time that he started compiling the list. Changes in the color of ink and size of pen make clear that this was a “growing” list, with additions being made into the early 1750s. The other three catalogues are grouped together in an untitled manuscript notebook containing an assortment of financial records and other materials related to Charles Wesley and his family.4 The first of these three lists is titled “Catalogue of Books, 1 Jan 1757.”5 Like the earlier list, this date indicates when the initial entries were made; both the publication date of some books on the list and Wesley’s inscriptions in surviving volumes make clear that he continued to add to the list over the next few years.
