ASG NATIONAL CONFERENCE 2016

The 2016 ANNUAL NATIONAL ASG CONFERENCE will be held in INDIANAPOLIS, IN on July 7-11. Did you know INDIANAPOLIS, IN, is the birthplace of the AMERICAN SEWING GUILD? After reading some chatter on the ASG Newsletter Editors Forum about how nice it would be to include a brief history of the ASG, we were directed to this article in the ASG Policies and Procedures Manual.

HISTORY OF THE ASG…

The Home Sewing Association (HAS), formerly known as American Home Sewing and Craft Association (AHSCA), started the American Sewing Guild, Inc. (ASG) in 1978 as a pilot pro- ject with chapters in Indianapolis and Denver.

The pilot program was expanded and various types of chapters were tried. On March 18, 1983, the ASG reorganized and made two major changes. The first change incorporated the ASG as an independent not-for-profit educational organization. The second change established the first full-time executive director to manage the organization. At this point, there were about 30 chapters, with each chapter retaining its local flavor while op- erating under the direction of ASG national headquarters.

At this time it was now easier to start chapters, and by the middle 1990s, the guild was composed of about 80 chapters. The business of the national organization was directed by the ASG Board of Directors and the day-to-day operations were ASG’s “national headquarters” which was located wherever the management firm was located.

On March 1, 2001, the American Sewing Guild, Inc., opened its own ASG national headquarters at 9660 Hillcroft Street, Suite 510, Houston, TX 77096-3866. An executive director and staff dedicated to managing the ASG activities were hired.

In the fall of 2003, the directors and regional representatives met in a joint session to discuss the objectives and future of the organization. They developed a new mission statement, which incorporates the core aim of the ASG:

Advancing sewing as an art and life skill ASG Structure

ASG is governed by a national Board of Directors. A director is elected for a three-year term and may serve two terms. The national board elects officers – a chair, a secretary, and a treasurer – each year. It makes policy, sets goals and objectives for the organization, and initiates programs through assignments and task forces or committees. In addition, it keeps the organi- zation running by hiring the executive director. The executive director is responsible for the overall management of the busi- ness affairs of the ASG and also serves as our representative to the sewing industry. The executive director is responsible for hiring and supervising the ASG national headquarters staff.

The national headquarters staff fulfills the day-to-day management of the ASG, which includes maintaining the membership data base, assisting chapters, chapter start up and development, planning the national conference and other official meetings, maintaining the ASG website, accounting, public relations, advertising, publications (Notions), obtaining insurance, and filing taxes.

Leading each chapter is a President and a Chapter Advisory Board (CAB). The CAB meets at least four times a year to plan and conduct the business of the chapter, such as setting up educational programs—all for the benefit of ASG members. ASG members are members of the whole organization. They can attend ASG meetings anywhere in the country. Members may designate a particular chapter to receive the part of their dues that comes back to chapters (the “rebate”). Usually this chapter will be the nearest one to where they live and from which they will receive their newsletter, but it can be any chapter at all.

In many chapters, people in a particular area or town or with a specific interest will also form a neighborhood/special interest group. A group may be as small as three or four or have more than 40 regular attendees. Neighborhood/Special interest groups are part of a chapter, and chapter members may attend as many different neighborhood/special interest groups as they wish. Anne Marie Soto, Editor of Notions

3 Neighborhood Group News North Palm Beach

I am proud and pleased to an- nounce that our neighborhood group produced 63 quilts for our charity challenge. My thanks to Barbara Kahn for coordinating our efforts. Me- ghan, from Quantum House picked up the quilts this morn- ing at our charity sewing. She spoke about Quantum House and how the quilts will be used. She invited us to come down for a tour. They have added new beds and will be opening the new section soon. Thanks to Diva for the photo.

Jane Cappo ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. Pembroke Pines

In January we enjoyed looking at all the beautiful baby items Carol Short has made for her soon-to-arrive grand- daughter. She is going to look like a little princess for sure. At the February meeting we showed jackets, vest and other garments made out of fabric. All the pieces created looked great and showed lots of creativity.

4 Neighborhood Group News West Palm Beach

We're back in full operation. We had a new member come to our very well-attended February meeting. The pro- gram was “what to do with all those scraps.” Our March meeting will be on machine feet. Hopefully we’ll come away with some different uses for our most-used feet and using the feet we have no idea what to do with. I’d like to send a special thanks to all my sewing sisters for all the support and condolences sent to me for the loss of my husband.

Susan Reney ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. Coral Springs

Pin Cushions! Can we ever have too many of these delightful, easy-to-make sewing room necessities? Our group spent an enjoyable February meeting with a hand-sewing project. Embellished with buttons and made by Linda’s dad, it was time well spent with sewing buddies.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………. January 23, 2016 CAB Meeting Highlights

Membership – There were 46 renewals in December/January and 2 new. As of January 11, we had 246, plus upcoming renewals.

Future National Conferences ̶ Indianapolis 2016, Orlando 2017.

Newsletter – The trial of e-mail distribution of the Status Thimble went smoothly. 250 copies were printed, with a savings of about $75 in printing costs. Postage savings were not significant (71 cents vs. 42 cents bulk rate) to mail each newsletter. Manpower savings were big and if necessary one person could do the mailing now. Nineteen members are without computer access. We will continue the e-mail distribution for the next year, using the dollar savings towards special events and keeping the cost of the annual meeting down.

Media – Linda Lawton provided information about privacy settings on Facebook that can keep you secure. We can “like” the ASG Fort Lauderdale page and then post comments and ideas to it. Linda also offered help with smart phones to anyone who requests help. Yahoo Groups; the ASG Newsletter Editors Group; PE Design Group were discussed; Linda will moni- tor our group to keep comments ASG-related. We are still working on getting the Amazon Smile group, currently labeled ASG-Plantation, changed to read ASG-Ft. Lauderdale.

Neighborhood Groups — Each Neighborhood Group Leader brought a project to share with the group and provided a handout for each project. These projects can be used at meetings “as is” and/or embellished.

Neighborhood Group Meetings Neighborhood meetings are great places to meet with new and old friends. All neighborhood groups are open to any member and guests. Guests may attend two meetings before joining the Guild. Bring and share your sewing projects. Ask for help with problems you may be having. Please call first when attending at private homes. Occasionally, it’s necessary for programs to change after the newsletter is printed. The latest information is at www.asgfl.org.

Your attendance at programs sponsored by the American Sewing Guild may be digitally recorded through photographs and/or video recordings. These images may be used on our website or in our newsletters. If you do not wish your image to be published, please notify the photographer or Group Leader. All members are welcome to attend the Chapter Board meetings. You need to contact any board member (see page 2) in advance to confirm time and location. We welcome member questions, comments and suggestions.
