It has experienced rapid population growth, increasing by over 50,000 in the last 10 years up until 2015. There are five key town centers: Brixton, Clapham and Stockwell, North Lambeth (Waterloo, Vauxhall, Kennington), and Norwood and Streatham. Lambeth is the 5th most deprived Borough in London. One in five of the borough’s residents work in jobs that pay below the London Living Wage. This is reflected by the fact that nearly one in four (24%) young people live in families who receive tax credits. Major regeneration developments and improvements are underway for Waterloo and Vauxhall and the Nine Elms Regeneration project which will drive the transformation of these areas. Lambeth College has three main campuses in the borough, based in Clapham, Brixton and Vauxhall. Approximately a quarter of the student cohort in any given academic year are 16‐18 learners. In addition to this, there is also a significantly growing proportion of 16-18 learners on Apprenticeship programmes, moderate numbers on workplace‐training provision for employers and school link programmes which are offered to relatively smaller learner volumes. -

FRIENDS OF VAUXHALL PARK NEWSLETTER No. 26 It was with more anticipation that usual that we waited for the results of the Green Flag judging this year. With the cuts to the Parks Department budget we were particularly delighted when it was announced that Vauxhall Park has received its’ fifth Green Flag. This award is given to the very best open spaces around the country and we are very proud that the Park is still considered to be amongst these. We hope that this award will encourage the Council to invest in the necessary upkeep of the park. We continue to work closely with Lambeth’s Park Department to bring maintenance issues to their attention and would like to thank Mickey Penney, our Parks Officer for his hard work. We are also working closely with developers of Planning Applications for sites around the Park to ensure that the Park is considered fully in the emerging cluster of tower blocks at Vauxhall Cross. Talk a walk through the Park’s history This autumn Lambeth Archivists will be leading a number of walks around Lambeth parks. Each walk is circular and last approx one hour. On Monday 24 October they will be doing a guided walk around Vauxhall Park. Come and find out about why one of the founders of the National Trust, Octavia Hill, became involved in its’ creation and why a special act of Parliament had to be passed for it to be established. The current predicament of Vauxhall Park in relation to the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area is nothing new in the history of this park… Meet outside the Caron Almhouses, just to the north of Stanley Close on Fentiman Road at 11am. -

From major and local events, casual and competitive sports, reflection and contemplation, through to outdoor play spaces for children, we know that parks and open spaces are necessities in the modern world. Lambeth’s open spaces have experienced a renaissance in recent years, and we have seen our many active parks groups rise to become champions for green spaces, including exploring new models in how to manage and maintain them. We now have 12 Green Flag Award winning parks and cemeteries, the highest number we’ve ever had; and the latest Residents Survey revealed 76% of local people judged Lambeth’s parks and open spaces to be good or excellent. To ensure they meet our customer’s needs, Lambeth’s parks, cemeteries and open spaces are managed to Green Flag Award standard, using a rigorous set of criteria such as being welcoming, healthy, safe and secure, clean and well maintained, sustainable, respecting wildlife and heritage, community involvement, well marketed and good management. -
