Richard Byington Echo Sports Editor

The UTC sports program has blossomed into the most successful in the SOUTHERN COW Southern Conference. During spring break the Lady Moc basketball team captured the Southern Conference tourney, while the wrestling team claimed their fourth straight Sou-Con Championship. By winning the Southern Conference tourney in Johnson City on Saturday, the Lady Mocs became the first-ever conference team to secure a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Lady Mocs beat Furman 68-65 and now will face 10th ranked Georgia Bulldogs in Athens on Wednesday. UTC was led by tournament MVP Nancy Smith who iced victory with a pair of free throws with seven seconds left in the game. "This was a big victory for our program—and we're glad to be a part of it," said senior Marcheta Winton. "Georgia will be a challenge. We hope to pull off an upset." This will be the first taste of the national tourney for the Lady Mocs, who carry a 19-11 record into the tournament.
