Countryside • Barlby Woodland and Meadow – Sightings of Roe deer on the Woodland, enquires to be made. • Barlby Ponds – Lifebuoys have been replaced, but continue to be vandalised. Reed removal is required. Concerns raised regarding the Public Right of Way to the ponds (due to collapsed bridge). • Old Railway Walk – Car park has been repaired. • Osgodby ponds –The rushes will require treatment and decking needs repairing. General • The meeting was given an update on the planned SEND School at Osgodby. • The meeting was given a report on the Highways surface dressing programme.

PUBLIC SESSION • Sam Hutchinson, the Community Mapping Project Officer from the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner attended and gave a presentation on liaison with the community including communicating with community groups and listening to residents’ concerns. • The Reverend John Thomson, Bishop of Selby attended and extended his thanks to the Town Council for all their good wishes and the continuing work for the Parish. He was sorry that he had not been able to attend the blessing at the Memorial Garden, but felt Revd Graham Horner had done an excellent job in his place.

PLAY AREAS/OPEN SPACE/ALLOTMENTS • Play Area at Bungalow Road is to be refurbished, old equipment removed and new toddler equipment installed, work planned for early July. • A large amount of garden waste including trees was dumped on the play area at Wainhomes during the Easter break; please report any sightings of fly tipping to the Council Manager. • Smashed bottles is a continuing problem on the play areas, please be vigilant to avoid injury to children. • Spring reports: Kissing gates and fence posts to be inspected and repaired or replaced.

STREET LIGHTS, FURNITURE, ROADS/FOOTPATHS • Streetlights – One column at Ousebank is reported as beyond repair, a new column has been ordered. • Highways issues - Double yellow lines on York Road discussed, they are still being ignored near to the Pharmacy. Parking near Highfield View is causing a visual obstruction, reported to Highways. • Street furniture - New bins are on order to replace damaged ones. • PROW - No formal advice on an extension to the footpath closure order at Northfield has been received. The matter was raised with the developer and NYCC and new signs will be displayed. • Meeting planned with David Wilson Homes to discuss new allotments.

COMMUNITY GROUP • Osgodby Institute – The Heritage group have aerial photos of Barlby and Osgodby dated 1947 and 1974, they can organise an exhibition at the Library and Community Hub. The group has funding for two new Memorial benches, it was proposed that one be sited at Osgodby pond and one where the telephone box used to be. Old benches to be relocated. • Forthcoming events include a quiz night and coffee morning. • A grant of £250 was agreed for the Horticultural Show. • Family Fun Day - 7th September 2019, Wainhomes play area, rides and stalls, everyone welcome. There may be an opportunity to incorporate the Selby 950 celebrations into the event. OSGODBY HERITAGE & HISTORY GROUP #puttingosgodbyonthemap

Who are we?

We are a small group of volunteers researching the heritage and history of the village of Osgodby. In April 2018, the Group was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of £49,500 to deliver a project “A Village with a Heritage Nun Could Guess” ending in September 2020. Our project takes its title from Mary Ward.

Mary Ward, foundress and pioneer, lived at Osgodby Hall at the end of the 1500s/early 1600s with her Babthorpe relatives. She founded a religious order, the Congregation of Jesus, and for over 400 years the community of sisters have resided at what is now known as the Bar Convent in York. Sisters from all over the world still visit Osgodby.

Something for Everyone

Anyone interested in local history, or heritage of the village, is welcome to get involved. There is something for everyone, from archaeology through to Living Memories. We have had visits to Local Archives to help our research, and further visits are being organised. An Afternoon Tea was held in July 2018 when people shared their memories and photographs of Osgodby.

Workshops

Earlier this year, at an “Aerial Photography” workshop about 30 people attended an informative talk, and afterwards looked at images from three drones being flown over the village.

Further workshops (which are free to attend) will be held throughout the year and all are welcome to come along

Digital Library

We are putting together a library of digital photographs to preserve the history of the village. If anyone has any photographs relating to Osgodby, (village, events or people) the Group would be pleased to borrow them to scan and add to the library. Please email [email protected]

WATER BOTTLE EXCHANGE SCHEME We’ve teamed up with Selby District Council and Drax Group plc to support a new scheme that aims to reduce single use plastic bottle waste. Barlby and Osgodby residents will be able to swap their single use water bottle by visiting Barlby Library and Community Hub. Just swap your single use bottle and you’ll get a brand new reusable bottle for free. All single use bottles exchanged as part of the project will be recycled.

EX-FORCES SUPPORT This project makes a range of help and support available to older, past members of the Armed Forces living in North Yorkshire. The project is entering the final year. Beneficiaries must be over 65 years old and have served in any branch of the Armed Forces, for any length of time, or completed National Service. The following help is available :

- Home well-being checks. These are aimed at helping individuals remain independent at home for longer and be safe, warm and well by providing key safes, grab rails, mobility aids, carbon monoxide alarms and draught proofing. Also help to review utility bills, access cheaper prices, apply for financial support towards heating costs and deal with problems with utility providers.

- Day Trips, groups and activities. Social activities are organised to tackle loneliness and isolation. - Financial support/advice from Citizens Advice or Carers Count.
