Abstract In 1933, British actor and playwright, Sarah Mayer, left behind her wealthy husband, and the large country estate they shared in rural Hampshire, for a trip to Japan. As a judo enthusiast travelling as a sports tourist, Sarah became the first western woman in Japan to receive the award of shōdan, or first degree black-belt, for judo, from the Butokukai, an increasingly militaristic, pedagogical institution, aimed at continuing the study of traditional and modern fighting techniques. Sarah’s training at the home of the art, the Kōdōkan in Tokyo, was encouraged by founder, Jigorō Kanō, a known internationalist in outlook. As the trip continued, the Japanese government promoted Mayer’s tour as part of the drive for modernism. Primarily, this thesis analyses the reasons for her unprecedented acceptance as a Western woman by Kanō and the wider judo establishment. Using a biographical framework, and drawing on a large volume of primary source research, this work places Sarah’s achievement into a context of not only time and place, but social mobility and agency, considering, firstly, Sarah’s life before she went to Japan. Central to the thesis, the work then continues with an in-depth study of her time in Japan and the height of her international fame as a sporting personality, concluding with her final years and reflecting on her precarious place within history. Whilst contributing to the literature on gendered sporting performance and role models of the early twentieth century, this work should be seen as a revision of the limited historiography of women in judo, and also, to a lesser extent, the international politicisation of physical culture. The politicisation of sport, particularly the fighting arts, is an important, and sometimes neglected area of sports history, particularly in the Western literature. Providing a gendered perspective on the international history of the growth and diversification of martial arts, this thesis investigates a crucial case study, encompassing overarching themes of class, individual agency and the wider political context of Anglo-Japanese relations.     Newsletter_42.1 This episode appeared as part of a series of three devoted to the cultural revolution that occurred in Britain in the years between the wars. The first dealt with architecture and design, with a focus on Art Deco and modernism, the third with the influence of Hollywood films on British culture. The second was devoted to the so-called Bright Young People of the 1920s. Presenters included Philip Hoare (biographer of Stephen Tennant), Selina Hastings (biographer of Evelyn Waugh and Nancy Mitford), Lucy Moore (author of Anything Goes: A Biography of the Roaring Twenties) and D. J. Taylor (author of a cultural survey entitled The Bright Young People). Indeed, Taylor’s book (reviewed in EWNS 41.2 and 39.1) seems to have been the basis for the program’s script, which follows his description and interpretation of participants in the BYP and their cultural/historical importance. No scriptwriter is mentioned in the credits. The program follows the careers of three participants in the BYP (Stephen Tennant, Elizabeth Ponsonby and Brenda Dean Paul) and two observers and chroniclers of that movement (Evelyn Waugh and Cecil Beaton). The three examples of BYPs were all from well-established upper-class families. Philip Hoare provides most of the narrative on Stephan Tennant, whose primary talent seems to have been drawing attention to himself as a thing of beauty. Nancy Mitford drew heavily on Tennant for her character Cedric Hampton in Love in a Cold Climate and The Pursuit of Love, and Caroline Blackwood compared him to David Bowie (unfair because Bowie can sing).

The initial, rather hostile reception, led the partners to make a number of cuts and changes which, under rather more favourable circumstances, would probably not have been so severe. This gradual dissection continued in the 1920’s at the hands of Geoffrey Toye, Harry Norris, Malcolm Sargent and J M Gordon until, by the post-war revival of 1949, RUDDIGORE was, to all intents and purposes, a new work. It is to be hoped that such a thing could not happen today as I would like to think that we have far too much respect for the works of these two men to allow anyone to take such drastic rewrites upon themselves. That the original version of the opera works is evidenced by the considerable number of amateur revivals over the past few years that have attempted to return as closely as possible (given the lack of performing material) to a ‘first night version’ - a trend fuelled by the New Sadler’s Wells revival of 1987. That Gilbert was guilty of one miscalculation is fairly obvious in his placing of “The battle’s roar is over” in Act One.

This scenario in which a powerful figure obtains sexual acts from subordinate actors in exchange for employment was used to explore the influence of rape myths and Sexual Economic Theory on mock-juror decision-making. Participant-jurors (n = 907) viewed video and written testimony of a male or female complainant, accusing a male producer of rape. Delay before reporting the incident to the police (immediately, six months, ten years), and whether the complainant secured the acting role or not were varied. Females (79.7%) were significantly more likely than males (62.7%) to deliver a guilty verdict and to recommend longer prison sentences. When the complainant did not secure the acting role, and they delayed reporting the incident for six months, there was a trend for guilty verdict rates to be slightly higher when the complainant was male (80.5%) than female (64.5%).
