THANK YOU to our donors, whose benevolence since 1866 has ensured Wartburg’s mission remains constant. 2 David J. Gentner President & CEO Anniversary Reflections and Building Our Future

Dear Wartburg Family,

In 2016, I was honored to be part of Wartburg’s 150th Anniversary celebration. It gives me pause to think of our history, as I walk among the 34-acres of greenery, the mix of new and historic buildings, and the omnipresent life of our immortal campus.

I believe our founders would be proud that we remain steadfast in their vision to care for our community by providing a safe, caring environment for those who need it, when and how they need it. In 1866, our predecessors established The Wartburg Orphans’ Farm School to provide a home for children orphaned by the Civil War. The children were grouped in houses by age and gender; the house became their home and those residing in it their family. We began caring for seniors in one of the nation’s first residential facilities for seniors shortly thereafter so the children could come home again if necessary in their later years.

It is not any different today than it was over a century ago. At Wartburg, your family is our family too.

As we look toward the next century, Wartburg remains a leader in innovative care for the oldest members of our community through residential and health care services. We are committed to staying ahead of the challenges seniors face today by providing the award-winning programs and services that allow each of those entrusted to our care, the very fabric of Wartburg’s family, to live their best life with the dignity and respect they so richly deserve.

We could not do so without the generosity of our patrons, volunteers and staff. And for that we are deeply thankful. As you read about all the exciting happenings in 2016, I believe you will be just as proud as I am to be part of Wartburg’s family.

In service together,

David J. Gentner President & CEO

$70.9 $22.0 669 million million employees DIRECT & INDIRECT GOODS & SERVICES EMPLOYMENT IMPACT GENERATED ACTIVITY PURCHASED JOBS SUPPORTED

UNCOMPENSATED CARE The Skilled Nursing Facility, Licensed Home Care, Long-Term Home Health Care and Adult Day Care programs accept all patients, regardless of their ability to pay or payer source. Many of the seniors we serve live at or below the poverty line and are eligible for Medicaid, which through its established rates, reimburses Wartburg for providing the care. However, in many cases this reimbursement is below the actual cost incurred. The cost of uncompensated care is as follows: 2016 Uncompensated Program Total Cost Per Unit Skilled Nursing $(7,255,000) $(169.75) Adult Day Care – Medical $(1,000) $(0.02) Licensed Home Care $(807,000) $(7.10) Total $(8,063,000)
