Update for Olympus Parents and Carers – 1st April 2021

Dear Parents and Carers,

It is hard to believe that we have reached the end of term 4 as it feels as though we have barely started back in school with all learners. It is reassuring that there seems to be an increasing feeling of normality coming back to our schools, despite staff and secondary learners having to wear face coverings. We are expecting further changes to Government guidance during the holidays which may change some of our current arrangements, including the expectation for face coverings to be worn in class, but we will contact you if we have to make significant adaptations.

The Government is proceeding with its roadmap to ease lockdown arrangements but we will continue with caution as we make plans for the remainder of the school year. Because of this, we feel that it would be irresponsible at this stage to commit to arranging any school visits or large scale events such as Proms this side of the summer holidays. Whilst this may be disappointing for some students, we cannot face the risk of planning something that may then have to be cancelled, potentially incurring costs for families. It goes without saying that we would be grateful for your support in ensuring that your children do not see the holidays as an excuse for large get-togethers, thus undoing all the progress made in reducing infection rates during the winter.

Home Lateral Flow Testing over the Easter Break The Government has asked that students and staff continue to test twice a week during the Easter break, as well as reporting the tests to both their school and the NHS. Thank you for your support with this. Whilst the number of cases is dropping in the South area, we have had 3 positive cases in Olympus schools since the return to education and we cannot become complacent, especially as the easing of the national lockdown could lead to an upward surge in positive cases. Our objective is to avoid a return to the situation we faced before Christmas when large numbers of children and adults had to self-isolate.

Contact for Covid-19 Cases during the School Holidays We will need to know of any positive cases of Covid-19 during the start of the Easter break please for any children who have been attending school this week as it will result in anyone they have been in contact with needing to self-isolate for 10 days. Therefore, from Friday 2nd April to Monday 5th April, you should contact Council via their dedicated e-mail address: ey- [email protected] if your child tests positive and has been in school. Please remember that a positive home LFD test needs to be followed up with a confirmatory PCR test which needs to be booked via the NHS. The attached flyer provides full information about the details you should send in the e-mail, as well as other useful information. They will reply to your e-mail with any additional advice and will contact the school if necessary, to let them know.

From Tuesday 6th April, there is no need to notify anyone because nobody else in school will be affected as they will not have been in school for the infectious period. It would still be helpful to e- mail the address on the flyer, please, in order to enable us to monitor positive cases.

We recognise that contact from school after term ends with an instruction to self-isolate may cause some frustration and disappointment. Please bear in mind that the member of staff contacting you is only doing their job, in line with Government guidance, and may well be working during their holiday. Therefore, please treat them with the courtesy that they deserve.

Working Together for Future Benefit The Olympus Academy Trust has been working closely with the Board of Directors of Technology & Engineering Academy (BTEA) to explore ways of working more collaboratively. Discussions are ongoing with the Department for Education about BTEA joining The Olympus Academy Trust in September 2021. Further information can be found in the update of 25th March which can be found here and further details about leadership arrangements after Easter can be found here.

Staff Changes As mentioned in the previous update, we have now completed the appointment process for Hill Primary School’s new Headteacher from September 2021, when Mrs Kirsten Lemming will be retiring. We are pleased to announce that Mr Ian Oake, currently Deputy Headteacher at Callicroft Primary Academy, was successful and will take over from Mrs Lemming. Mr Oake will make arrangements to meet the Filton Hill community in the coming weeks. We have started the process to appoint a replacement Deputy Headteacher for Callicroft Primary Academy.

Free School Meals We are pleased to be able to provide vouchers to the value of £15 per week per child eligible for income-based free school meals during the Easter holidays, in partnership with South Gloucestershire Council. You may still be able to get support through the Winter Grant Scheme. For further details, please contact the Council on 0800 953 7778 quoting Winter Grant funding. Please also contact your school if you are finding things difficult at the moment and need additional support.

HAF (Holidays and Food) We have attached a leaflet that we hope you will find useful which includes information about the organisations that will be running holiday activities and food schemes during the school Easter holidays. The schemes are supported by South Gloucestershire Council with funding from the Department for Education. All places on these schemes will be free for children eligible for free school meals. Most of these schemes also have options to pay and attend as well. All eligible children attending will be provided with a free lunch.

Test and Trace Support Payments You might be able to get a payment of £500 if you’ve been told to self-isolate by NHS Test and Trace, or you’re the parent or guardian of a child who has been told to self-isolate. If you’re eligible for either the Test and Trace Support Payment or a discretionary payment, you’ll receive the £500 payment in addition to any benefits and Statutory Sick Pay that you receive currently.

If you think you meet the eligibility criteria for either the Test and Trace Support Payment or a discretionary payment, you can apply through your local council here. You can claim up to 42 days after the first day of your self-isolation period.

Regular Covid-19 testing available to you and your family

We are writing to:  thank you for supporting the return to school and college of all children earlier this month  ask households of children, young people or adults who either attend, or work in, a nursery, school or college to test themselves twice a week  give you the details of home rapid testing kits now available for collection  ask for your continued support to keep everyone safe

Thank you Thanks to everyone’s hard work and support, the return to school has gone well, with high attendance levels and positive feedback from staff, students and parents. We know that this has been a worrying time for everyone and we appreciate your commitment to keeping your child and their school community safe. We would encourage all parents and carers to continue to support your child’s attendance through the school week. Regular home testing Regular home testing for those without symptoms of Covid-19 is available across South Gloucestershire. This is known as rapid testing (using lateral flow devices). This type of testing can identify positive cases of coronavirus that would otherwise go undetected, so that people can self-isolate and break the chain of transmission. Secondary school and college age children are already being tested regularly. Primary school children are not advised to have rapid tests currently. Anyone with symptoms should isolate and book a test on GOV.UK or call 119. We are asking anyone over the age of 16 whose household, support or childcare bubble includes children or staff in a nursery, primary school, secondary school, or college, to take a rapid home test twice a week. How to access regular rapid testing

There are several different ways you can get tested regularly: 1) You can order home testing kits for delivery on GOV.UK

2) Home rapid testing kits are also now available to be collected from our local testing sites, seven days-a-week, between 1:00pm – 8:00pm (collection is ONLY available between these times as these sites are used for testing in the mornings):  Cleve RFC, The Hayfields, Cossham St BS16 9EN  Courtside Carpark, BS37 4DQ

Chris Sivers, Director of Children, Adults and Health, South Gloucestershire Council, PO Box 1955, Bristol BS37 5AF

Department for Children, Adults and Health

 BAWA Healthcare and Leisure 589 Southmead Road, Filton BS34 7RG 3) Kits may also be collected from our rapid testing sites, seven days-a-week, from 8:30am – 5:30pm (to 7.30pm Mon and Weds), at:  Leisure Centre, Fiddlers Wood Lane, Bradley Stoke BS32 9BS  Kingswood Leisure Centre, Church Road BS16 4RH (every day except Tuesday and Thursday)  Yate Parish Hall, Station Road, BS37 4PQ No appointment is necessary to collect kits and individuals may collect a maximum of two boxes of seven kits. 4) If you would prefer to do a rapid test at one of our rapid testing sites, where assistance is available, please book a rapid test online. Regular testing complements the wide range of prevention and safety measures in place such as the rollout of the vaccine, effective contact tracing when positive cases are detected and everyone following Hands Face Space and other guidance. By making regular testing part of our routines, we will be able to identify more cases of people without symptoms who could be unknowingly spreading Covid-19 to loved ones and in their communities.
