The song also received a nod from the BFCA Critics Choice awards, and Stephen Bruton & T Bone Burnett’s original score won the The LA Film Critics Association award. Co-written by Ryan Bingham and T Bone Burnett, “The Weary Kind (Theme From Crazy Heart)” is featured on the Crazy Heart Original Motion Picture Soundtrack -- in stores today from New West Records. A deluxe edition of the soundtrack featuring all 23 songs from the film, sequenced in their running order, is also available. The soundtrack was co-produced by 10-time Grammy® Award winner T Bone Burnett and guitarist/songwriter Stephen Bruton, whom the film is dedicated to. The music is from the Fox Searchlight Pictures movie Crazy Heart, starring Jeff Bridges, who also garnered wins in the Best Actor category at the BFCA Critics Choice, LA Film Critics Association, and Golden Globe® awards. When asked about the ride of the last year leading to the success, Golden Globe® Best Song winner Ryan Bingham explains, “It’s come a long way from sitting on the tailgate of a truck in the middle of a parking lot, playing for 5 or 6 people after the bar had shut down.     Colin Linden – bLOW Biography “Got a coin in my pocket heavy and gold/It don’t own me I need to let it go/Cause having is wanting/Desire can make you weep” – “bLOW” Colin Linden’s tale is the stuff of legend, the kind told in the Coen brothers’ O Brother Where Art Thou or Inside Llewyn Davis, both of which featured his guitar playing on the soundtracks. That film would begin with an 11-year-old meeting his musical idol Howlin’ Wolf at a matinee show in his native Toronto, accompanied by his mom, who took a picture of the two during a nearly two-hour long conversation before the gig, the legendary bluesman idling over coffee and cigarettes. “I’m an old man now, and I won’t be around much longer,” Wolf told him. “It’s up to you to carry it on.” Linden still carries that frayed photograph in his wallet, along with a Sears 5/8” socket wrench in his pocket to play slide guitar. He has taken Wolf’s plea seriously, performing since he was 12 years old, leaving home as a teenager to travel the south at the invitation of Mississippi Sheiks delta blues guitarist Sam Chatmon which took him to Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Memphis and Hollandale, Mississippi, meeting and visiting the sites of his heroes – Brownie McGhee, Muddy Waters, Sippie Wallace, Tampa Red, Blind John Davis, the Rev. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.

An Update on Our Emeritus Professors Since most of the readers of this newsletter are former students in our department, we thought you might like to hear about your professors from your Prince Lucien Campbell Hall, college years. home of the political science department William Baugh retired in 2003 and continued teaching part-time for the next five years. In retirement, he entered the University of Oregon architecture program. He lives near Junction City with his wife, Cheryl. James Davies lives in Eugene, Oregon, and is a bit older than ninety. Perhaps his best known publication is “Toward a Theory of Revolution,” appearing in The American Sociological Review. The “J- Curve” suggests that revolution is more likely when people have experienced a fairly long period of satisfaction of their needs and then they are faced with a sharp downturn in satisfaction. He is also the author of When Men Revolt and Why: A Reader in Political Violence and Revolution and Violence in America (New York: Signet Books, 1969). A reflection on the work of James Davies, coauthored by John Orbell and Roshani Shay, is forthcoming in Politics and the Life Sciences. Daniel Goldrich remains active in the Community Alliance of Lane County, doing educational events promoting peace, justice, and policies to confront climate change via a revitalized locally and regionally based economy. Key question: how to break through denial to animate the effort to realize these changes? He and his wife, Hannah, consider themselves fortunate to have a decent public employee pension that allows them to spend a few winter weeks every year in Oaxaca, Mexico, swimming, reading, and visiting friends, including local artisans.
