LISTING OF AWARDS, SCHOLARSHIPS & BURSARIES

Only graduates of I.F.S.S. may apply for the awards, bursaries and scholarships in this booklet. Upgraded marks are considered for academic awards providing that the subjects are taken in the course of four or five consecutive years at I.F.S.S. The best TEN senior credits are the criteria for computing averages for many of these awards, bursaries and scholarships. An asterisk (*) at the beginning of each award indicates that no application is necessary. Application forms are available in Student Services/Guidance and the Main Office. The Graduation Committee and sponsors reserve the right to change or cancel the criteria and financial values of awards, bursaries and scholarships.

The application deadline for awards is Friday, April 26, 2019

1. ADULT LEARNING CENTRE - $500 to be granted to a student going on to post-secondary, potentially in Education; a student who has overcome barriers and succeeded. (Application Required)

2. ANDRE DUCIAUME MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $200 to be granted to a graduate of I.F.S.S. (Val Gagné, Shillington, Matheson, Holtyre, Ramore, Burkes) who is entering the welding fitter program at the Kirkland Lake Campus of Northern College.

3. * ANDREW G.B. CZEMPINSKI MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $200 this award is given to a student with a strong academic standing in Grade 12 Math, Physics or Chemistry.

4. ANSON GENERAL HOSPITAL AUXILIARY BURSARY - $250 to an I.F.S.S. graduate who wishes to attend a recognized school of nursing or study at a post-secondary institution in a field related to health science. Criteria for this award are need, academic performance and participation in the Teen Volunteer program. The recipient is chosen by the Auxiliary. (Application Required)

5. * ANSON GENERAL HOSPITAL BURSARY - $500 to a graduate from Iroquois Falls entering the Health Sciences Studies.

6. ATHLETIC SOCIETY AWARDS – open to graduates who are members of the I.F.S.S. Athletic Society and I.F.S.S. graduates on school teams.

7. * BINGHAM MEMORIAL HOSPITAL BURSARY - $500 to a graduate from Matheson entering the Health Sciences Studies.

8. BLACK RIVER-MATHESON CHAMBER OF COMMERCE SCHOLARSHIP - $250 is awarded annually to a graduating student who is a resident of Black River-Matheson, and has worked hard and achieved a measure of academic success, and is pursuing college or university studies related to economic development, such as in Business Management, Travel and Tourism, Environment and Resource Studies, Geography and Environmental Management, or planning. The following factors are taken into consideration: student financial need, attitude, grades, and effort. Students must apply directly to the Black River-Matheson Chamber of Commerce by May 1st, 2019. (Application Required)

9. BOURSE DE LA CAISSE POPULAIRE – SUCCURSALES D’IROQUOIS FALLS INC. ET DE VAL GAGNE - $150 for an I.F.S.S. French Immersion graduate who has demonstrated need and is attending a post-secondary school in his/her graduating year.

10. BRIAN HANEBERRY AWARD FOR THE UNSUNG HEROES - $250 is awarded to a graduating student. The winner must have demonstrated excellence in proactive involvement, initiative (a starter), dedication, dependability (seeing it through), hard work.

11. CANADIAN UNION of PUBLIC EMPLOYEES 259 BURSARY - $100 is awarded annually to a graduating student who is the son or daughter of a C.U.P.E. 259 member and who has worked hard and achieved a measure of academic success, and is pursuing a career in the Public Service sector. In any given year, should more than one student qualify for the bursary; C.U.P.E. 259 members reserve the right to award more than one bursary. C.U.P.E. 259 members also reserve the right to award this bursary to other graduating students that are pursuing a career in the Public Service sector so this bursary is not limited to children of C.U.P.E. 259 members. 12. CATHOLIC WOMEN’S LEAGUE BURSARY - $75 is awarded to an I.F.S.S. graduate who is a member of Mary Queen of the World Parish in Matheson and who is continuing his/her studies at college/university. Students submit their applications to Mrs. MacMullin who will submit them to the President of the Catholic Women’s League. (Application Required)

13. * CHRISTINE JESSUP MEMORIAL AWARDS – two awards of $100 will be presented to students who have achieved excellence in the study of English.

14. * COMPASS GROUP OF SCHOLARSHIP – $200 but not offered every year; the terms of the scholarship are established by the Staff each year that it is awarded; the status of the scholarship in 2018 is not known at this time

15. CONSTRUCTION CRAFT WORKER - $100 to a graduate who has successfully completed the Construction Craft Worker program at IFSS

16. DAVID D. POWELL TALENT AWARDS - $100 to a graduating student who has successfully developed and demonstrated a talent worthy of note during his or her years at I.F.S.S.

17. Detour Gold – 4 x $500 each to a graduating student who is pursuing post-secondary education. Preference would be given to those pursuing a career in mining, engineering, environmental sciences or trades.

18. * DORA WILSON MEMORIAL AWARD - $200 donated by the teaching staff to one student who best exemplifies the ideals of I.F.S.S. To be awarded to a student in the year of his/her receipt of the O.S.S.D.

19. * DR. ERIN THOMSON SCHOLARSHIP FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE & COMMUNITY SERVICE – value $250.00 is awarded to a graduating student who has demonstrated a high level of community service involvement, attained a high academic standing, is a student entering a post-secondary destination at the university level in the science or health related fields. The most important criteria for this scholarship is the community service.

20. DR. HALL/DR. HASKINS BURSARY - $200 is to be awarded to a graduate who will be attending college/university and entering a health science career.

21. * DR. LEGATE SCHOLARSHIP – value approximately $400 for a graduate with six U and M credits (Grade 12) entering a medical career.

22. * EARL T. PALMER SCHOLARSHIP - $800 – is awarded to the student with the highest average of the best 6 credits in their graduating year.

23. *EDGE IMGAGING $150 – is awarded to a deserving student

24. EUGENE RICARD BURSARY - $500 – a bursary awarded annually by the Local Council 2641 Knights of Columbus to an O.S.S.D. graduate who has a minimum average of 70% in his/her best 6 senior credits (Grade 11 and 12) and is entering a post-secondary institution. Selection is to be made by the awards committee based on the student’s need, ability, industry, and marks. This bursary is given to a Roman Catholic student who has achieved the majority of their schooling at I.F.S.S. (minimum 3 years)

25. FAMILY CARE PHARMACY - $200 to a student pursuing post-secondary studies in health care

26. * G.D. ADAMS SCHOLARSHIP - $200 –awarded to a graduate for the average of their best ten third or fourth year level credits when the Secondary School Diploma is awarded.

27. * GEORGE SPENCE TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP - $200 is awarded to a graduating student continuing his/her education at the university or college level in the field of technology. Aptitude, performance, attendance and involvement in the technical programs of the school will be considered. The winner will be chosen by the I.F.S.S. technical teaching staff. *

28. GEORGE TOWSLEY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP – established by AbitibiBowater in recognition of the late Mr. Towsley’s commitment to the education of young people. Five scholarships (5 x $100) will be presented annually to students proceeding to post-secondary education in the church or in people-oriented careers. Recipients will have demonstrated high ideals and qualities of citizenship and humanitarian service while in the pursuit of excellence in academics, sports or community related endeavors during their years at I.F.S.S.

29. GOLDCORP BURSARY - $1000 to a student in the grade 12 graduating class, based on overall academic performance, community involvement and post-secondary education in one of Goldcorp’s priority focus areas (trades and technology, health, education, and community)

30. * GUY’s PHOTO BURSARY - $300 is given to a graduating student who is pursuing studies in fine arts or business at college or university

31. * IROQUOIS FALLS FOODLAND - $50 to a deserving student, preference will be given to a Foodland employee

32. * IROQUOIS FALLS LIONS CLUB PROGRESS AWARDS – for remedial studies - $100 to one girl and $100 to one boy. Recipients must be O.S.S.D. graduates.

33. IROQUOIS FALLS LIONS CLUB VOLUNTEER BURSARY - $100 – given to a graduate who has been a school/community volunteer and who is attending college/university following his/her graduating year.

34. * IROQUOIS FALLS TIM-BR MART - $100 to a deserving student, chosen by the Technological Department

35. * IROQUOIS FALLS SECONDARY SCHOOL ROAR AWARD - $100 – to a student who has chosen to further his/her education, preferably in the area of journalism.

36. * IROQUOIS FALLS SECONDARY SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS – The I.F.S.S. Scholarship Fund is supported by friends of the school – open to O.S.S.D. graduates with six U and M credits (Grade 12).

37. LPL CONTRACTING TRADES BURSARY – 2 X $250 awarded to graduating students who have worked hard and achieved academic success. These scholarships will be issued to students pursuing an education in a trades related career. It may be university, college or through an apprenticeship.

38. * LEGION PRIZE - $400 to the top graduating student in the year he/she earns an O.S.S.D.

39. MARK MCMEEKIN SCHOLARSHIP - $250.00 is awarded to a deserving student in the Construction/Technology class who upon graduation, will enter into an accredited college taking a program in any of the Engineering Technology and Trades courses offered by an Educational Institution.

40. MATHESON ROTARY SCHOLARSHIP - $1000 is awarded to a student who is a resident of Black River-Matheson and has demonstrated volunteerism in the community at large, including at least one Rotary Club project (eg. Clean Up & Maintenance of Rotary Trail or Rotary Park, Rosedale Christmas). The student will also have demonstrated excellent academic achievement or have demonstrated excellent effort towards academic achievement, and be pursuing full time post- secondary education (college or university) in September. 41. * MICHELLE McCREA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP - $250 is awarded to a graduating student who will undertake a degree in the Nursing program in September. Should no student qualify, the scholarship can be awarded ONLY to a student entering the health services field. Preference will be given to students who have had a Co-Op Education Placement at either South Centennial Manor or Anson General Hospital. Student financial need is also a factor in the selection process. Student Services is responsible for selecting the recipient.

42. MONTEITH WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BURSARY - $200 is awarded to a graduating student who resides in Monteith and its surrounding area who plans to further his/her education at the college/university level. Criteria for this award are financial need, academic ability, and participation in school and community activities.

43. MOTHERS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVING (MADD) Chapter will fund a maximum of one Bursary in the amount of $200.00 to a deserving grade 12 student planning to attend post-secondary education, in any discipline, commencing in 2018. Applicants must apply in writing to the principal by April 26, 2019. The principal will then choose one successful applicant and provide the Chapter with the student's name. The successful graduate must show qualities of leadership; act as a role model to their peers and demonstrate a positive contribution to their school and/or community activities. (Application Required)

44. * MURRAY DOWSON TECHNICAL SCHOLARSHIP - $200 to a graduating student pursuing technical studies at the college or apprenticeship level. Candidate is chosen by the Technical Department.

45. NORTHEASTERN CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD AWARD FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND LEADERSHIP - $500 is awarded to a student who is a former graduate of N.C.D.S.B. or one of its predecessor boards; who has demonstrated leadership qualities, charity and service to others; who has exhibited superior and diverse knowledge, skills and attitudes in his/her academic achievements and involvement in the life of the school. Candidates for the award this year, will have graduated from St. Anne’s English Catholic Schooling June 2015. Students eligible for this award are asked to see Mrs. MacMullin.

46. * NORTHERN COLLEGE BOARD OF GOVERNORS ENTRANCE SCHOLARSHIP - $500 is awarded to a graduate with the highest academic average. This student must be enrolled in a full-time program at one of the campuses of Northern College.

47. WIRES INC. BURSARY - $500 awarded annually to each community in its service area and the intention of this, is to help students interested in pursuing a career as a power lineman only. See Mrs. MacMullin if you qualify for this bursary.

48. * ONTARIO SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS’ FEDERATION SCHOLARSHIPS, IROQUOIS FALLS BRANCH – 2 x $200 is awarded to students who achieves academic excellence. The recipients are chosen by the I.F.S.S., O.S.S.T.F. teaching staff.

49. * O.S.S.T.F. Educational Assistants, Professional Student Services Personal and Child Youth Worker’s Bursaries– usually 2 awards of $180 but not offered every year; the terms of the bursaries include: i) students must enroll in a post secondary E.A., CYW, Social Work or ECE program and ii) student must have a parent who is employed by District School Board Ontario North East and an EA and PSSP and in the event that neither condition i) or ii) is met, the bursaries may be awarded to students who are applying for OSAP because of financial need. Recipients should be chosen by the Educational Assistants in the school.

50. ONTARIO POWER GENERATION – 2 X $250, one male and one female student, who are pursuing studies in one of the following fields: engineering, science, environment, technology, math or physics

51. PETER GUY GALAXY GRANT - $200.00 The award is granted annually to one graduate of both E.S.C.H.S. and I.F.S.S. who is proceeding to post-secondary school studies at college or university: the award will recognize the students’ academic achievements, contribution to athletics and volunteerism (whether community or within the school) and financial need. Graduates must send a one page letter by April 27, 2018 to JOHN B. GUY – PETER GUY GALAXY GRANT – RR#2 – COCHRANE, ON - P0L 1C0 explaining why this award applies to them. A copy of this letter must also be forwarded to Mr. McRae. The Trustees of the Peter Guy Galaxy Grant will forward the money directly to the Financial Aid Office of the college or university that the recipient will attend. (Application Required)

52. PORQUIS AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY AWARD - $200 award is given to a deserving graduate from Porquis and its surrounding area who plans to further his/her education at the college/university level. Criteria for this award are financial need, academic ability, and participation in school and community activities. Special consideration will be given to a student who is pursuing a career in the area of agriculture. Students must reside in Porquis and its surrounding area, from rural Monteith to Tunis and from Monteith Road to Edgewater Road. (Students from Val Gagné, Matheson and Iroquois Falls are not eligible for this award.)

53. *PRIMERO MINING – 2 x $250 to deserving students who might be entering the fields of technology, mining, engineering, etc. These students will be chosen by the Technological Department.

54. * PRINCIPAL’S AWARD FOR STUDENT LEADERSHIP recognizes a student who has demonstrated leadership qualities and has been actively involved in the school. The Principal and the Vice-Principal are responsible for selecting the recipient.

55. REGINALD ROBINSON AWARD - $314.16 is awarded annually, to any graduate entering a people-oriented career. The recipient will be chosen by the Teaching Staff, which is charged with the responsibility of ensuring the award, goes to a good person, one who eventually will provide hands-on service to others, i.e humanitarian assistance which can include careers in medicine, social services, teaching and other people-related careers. The award goes to a deserving student and it is not necessary that it be based on grades but the recipients grades must be high enough to gain entry into a post-secondary program he/she aspires to pursue.

56. RITCHIE IRVINE MEMORIAL BURSARY - $1,000 is awarded to a graduate entering an apprenticeship or a technician/technologist program at college.

57. ROGER AND THERESE DELAPLANTE AWARD - $300 is awarded to a graduate with six Grade 12 U and M credits entering a university program leading to a teaching career. When there is no applicant pursuing a career in education, the award may be given to a student entering one of the helping professions.

58. ROYAL BANK OF CANADA AWARD - $200 from the Sundry Fund of the Local Branch is awarded to a graduating student going on to post-secondary studies preferably in a business career. The student is to be chosen by the Business Education Department.

59. ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION LADIES’ AUXILIARY BURSARY - $250 to a graduate who is going to college or university in the following year. Only children or grandchildren of Legion Ladies’ Auxiliary members are eligible. The Auxiliary selects the recipient. (Application Required)

60. SEAN HEWITT SCHOLARSHIP FOR THE ARTS - $500 will be awarded to a graduate who has contributed to the music/fine arts extra-curricular program, has participated in the fine arts/music program from grade 9-12 under O.S.S., and /or has contributed to the community fine arts/music scene, is attending a post- secondary school institution in the year that he/she is leaving I.F.S.S. and demonstrates a financial need. A preference will be given to students who have participated in the Iroquois Falls Lion’s Music Festival. (Application Required)

61. * SEBASTIEN (BAZ) CAZA MEMORIAL MATHEMATICS AWARDS - $200 awards are given to two students who have demonstrated outstanding performance in two senior mathematical credits.

62. SEGUIN’S VALU-MART BURSARY - $100 is awarded annually to a graduating student who has worked hard and achieved a measure of academic success, and is pursuing college or university studies in Business or the Social Sciences – i.e. Early Childhood Education, Child and Youth Worker. Student Services (Guidance and Special Education) select the recipient taking into consideration the following: financial need, attitude, ability, marks, effort and industry. Students from Tunis in the North, to Ramore and Holtyre in the South are eligible. (Application Required)

63. ST. ANDREW’S GOLDFIELDS -

64. ST. ANNE’S ALTAR SOCIETY BURSARY - $200 is awarded to a graduate who is continuing his/her education at college/university or other post-secondary institution. The student must be a member of St. Anne’s Parish and be in financial need. The recipient is chosen by the St. Anne’s Altar Society. (Application Required)

Good Luck Graduates of Class of 2018

65. * STUDENTS’ COUNCIL AWARDS - $150 is awarded to one graduating boy and girl who have contributed to school life through leadership in academics, extra-curricular activities and community involvement – e.g. clubs, bands, athletics, student council, fund raising. Applicants are nominated by Staff and Students’ Council.

66. THE CLARENCE MCCAFFREY BURSARY - $1000 awarded annually preferably to a student pursuing post-secondary studies at college (trades) or university (engineering) and if no candidate meets the criteria it will be awarded to students entering other programs of study either at the Porcupine Campus of Northern College or any other post-secondary institution; regardless, financial need of prospective candidates is the key factor. Students must apply by May 10th, 2019.

67. * THE PRETSELL MILITARY SCHOLARSHIP - $150 is (can be) awarded annually to a student pursuing a career in the Canadian Armed Forces. Student Services is responsible for determining if a student qualifies and for selecting the recipient if there is more than one candidate.

68. THE TOWNSHIP OF BLACK RIVER-MATHESON SCHOLARSHIPS – 4 separate scholarships valued at $2500, $1500, 2 x $500 are awarded to students graduating from a local secondary school who resides in the Black-River Matheson area (with residency of no less than 6 months). The recipient will have worked hard to put forth a consistent effort and positive attitude in his/her studies while achieving a high degree of success in his/her studies including an academic average of 80% (70%) or higher and have been accepted to college or university. He/she must be able to demonstrate a history of community involvement. Students must apply for this award by writing a letter to The Black River-Matheson Township Office by May 7th, 2018. The recipients are chosen by the Township. (Application Required)

69. VERN MILLER MEMORIAL BURSARY - $750 is awarded to a graduating student entering post-secondary studies in law enforcement or criminology.

70. * VERN PLUMMER ATHLETIC SCHOLARSHIP – $250.00 – is a scholarship that will be awarded to a student who has shown leadership, enthusiasm, determination and has been an active member of the athletic community at Iroquois Falls Secondary School.

71. WAHGOSHIG BURSARY - $250 is awarded to students from the in the year they graduate.
