St. Mary’s Cathedral Pastoral Reflection Church Office 612‐781‐7667 After a year and a half of scaling back our youth programs due to covid-19, we had a (24 hour Voice Mail System @ great summer of youth ministry. Thank you to all of our Church School coordinators, all the Church Office & the Rectory) those involved with our altar servers and our ministry team, for a job well done. It has

been challenging to have events during this time.

Vacation Bible School with the theme "Chill Out with God" was a wonderful experience held on 3 days (June 21, 23, and 25) versus a full week due to covid concerns. Our youth Metropolitan Tikhon Ruling of the had a great time enjoying fellowship, games, crafts, and activities. They spent time Orthodox Church in America learning about how to deal with stress and fear, making wonderful crafts including a "Joy" penguin, and many other VBS festivities. Special thanks to our staff for making it a safe Archbishop Paul and fun learning environment. We did not have use of the center so all activities of Chicago and the Diocese of the were done outside the cathedral in the green space near the elevator area. It was well- Midwest received. Vacation Bible School will be set to go for next year from June 20 to 24 and

Archpriest Andrew Morbey, hopefully, we can be back to a full week by then. 612‐781‐7667 [email protected] St. Mary's Summer Camp was held in a different place due to Covid-19 and restrictions that Camp Wapo faced. They had to take our week due to state-wide 50% camp capacity Archpriest Benjamin Tucci rules. We scrambled and looked into our options, settling on Camp Courage near Assistant / Youth Director Annandale, MN, where we go for Family Camp in the fall. Due to capacity restrictions, we 612‐599‐1125 [email protected] were forced to split the week into two sessions and limit the amount of time for each group. The 3rd to 8th graders came on Saturday evening and stayed until Tuesday Priest Richard Flom afternoon. The 9th to 12th graders came on Wednesday afternoon and stayed until [email protected] Saturday. The theme for the week was "Be Strong in the Lord." Many area came to Archpriest William Neumann hear confessions and to spend time with the youth. Camp Courage offered a wonderful [email protected] and inspiring week. We held many events outside including the Liturgical services, meal

Archpriest Schroedel times, campfires, and any activity involving several age groups. Youth had to wear masks [email protected] while indoors except in their cabins. We hope to bring camp back to WAPO in Amery, WI for next year over the first week of July. Zachariah Mandell, Music Director [email protected] Our fearless leader of St. Mary's Sheep (2nd to 5th graders), Steven Thell, had a Mark Griffin 763‐422‐8536 wonderful group of youth and families attend a beach outing at Long Lake Regional Park Protodeacon Krutchek on July 16. There was swimming, fishing, snacks, games, and fun. It was a great time. 651‐231‐8538 Thank you to all those who participated. Stay tuned for more sheep-like fun in the David Kostick 763‐434‐0048 upcoming months. Deacon Jason Ketz 763‐257‐2067 Deacon Michael Tarris We are working on and planning for fall activities. St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral’s Monthly Bulletin 3 Choir Notes

by Zachariah Mandell

The summer marches on! Greetings to you all as August comes APPRECIATION upon us. The last few weeks of quiet before things ramp up in One of the great challenges of being new in a place with such the fall. All of you with cabins – soak it in. And if you are in the rich choral history during a pandemic (do I really need to cities, enjoy these weeks outdoors somehow (I really need to elaborate on “challenge”?) is soaking up the tradition. So often take my own advice), for, as George R.R. Martin obviously stole over the past year, I was attempting to learn what had been from Minnesotans, winter is coming. So bleak. :) done in the past only so that I could figure out how to adapt and

Because So that everyone is up to date with the current state of choir so much of my time was spent dealing with the present oddities affairs, this is where we are in our COVID protocols: and challenges and adaptations, I did not always feel like I had a grasp of what came before. As we move forward now, and as  Sunday Liturgies remain the only services with singer I find myself with the time to think about things other than assignments. COVID, I finally feel like I am starting to be able to immerse myself better into St. Mary’s, where it has been and where it is.  There are two choirs alternating singing on Sundays, and these two groups are doubling as the wedding choirs. The opening lines are striking, optimism and caution, continuing to remember the nature of enlivening my vision of what this choir is: COVID as an airborne disease, and to give me a better chance of getting to know singers as they join the choir. As I said last “The choir of St. Mary’s has a history month, I hope to have a chance not only to sing services with as eventful and as impressive as that of the church it has these smaller groups, but to rehearse. Finally, with some echo of my article last month, I want to make clear that all we are doing with the choir still falls under I look forward to immersing myself ever more in the tradition of the umbrella of COVID protocol.
