Question on Notice No. 1021 Asked on 10 June 2005

QUESTION:

MRS MENKENS asked the Minister for Environment, Local Government, Planning and Women (Ms Boyle)—

With reference to management of protected areas, for each of the last two financial years and for the year to date (reported separately)—

(1) Broken down by district, what is the number of feral animals (by type) that have been removed from protected areas? (2) Broken down by district, what is the number (or estimated area) of noxious weeds (by type) that have been removed from protected areas?

ANSWER:

(1) - (2) It is estimated that the Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) spent a total of $2.8 million in the 2002-03 financial year, $3 million in the 2003-04 year and will spend a total of $4.5 million in the current financial year on pest and weed management in parks and forests across Queensland.

Consolidated State-wide records of the number of feral animals and noxious weeds removed from areas managed by the QPWS are not kept. However the high level of commitment that the QPWS has to the control of feral animals and noxious and other serious environmental weeds on its lands is evidenced by the strategic program, (at Attachment 1), that has been implemented over 2004-05.

In addition to its routine control activities, a program of similar scale has been identified by the QPWS for implementation during the 2005-06 financial year.

The QPWS approach to the control of feral animals and weeds is to reduce impacts through coordinated and sustained control programs in priority areas where pests are a high risk to the QPWS managed areas, the environment or adjoining agricultural production. The aim of management is to reduce infestations and minimise impacts.

Pest and weeds span property boundaries and control efforts must be coordinated across the landscape to be effective. Hence the QPWS is committed to co-operating with neighbouring landholders, Land Protection Officers of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines and Local Government Pest Officers, to achieve maximum benefit from control programs.
