1/ LO/LO refers to lift-on / lift-off cargo handling accomplished with a crane. This can be affected either by ship’s gear (a crane mounted on a ship) or a shoreside crane. In the instance of a container terminal, it’s normally a shoreside container gantry crane. 2/ Jones Act cabotage status means the service is one that complies with U.S. maritime cabotage laws, regulations and rulings for domestic transportation including U.S. -built, -flag, -crew, -ownership and - management requirements. 3/ APL’s Aloha Express (AEX) is operated with a string of three gearless foreign flag containerships operating fortnightly (every two weeks) on the port rotation Shanghai (China), Busan (S Korea), Yokohama (Japan), Honolulu (Hawaii) and Shanghai. 4/ International cabotage status means that U.S. maritime cabotage does not apply and foreign flag ship/services can be used on the route. 5/ Pasha Hawaii operates its Ro/Ro Direct service with the Pure Car and Truck Carrier (PCTC) JEAN ANNE (built 2005, 2,500 autos) on the port rotation San Diego, Honolulu, Kahului, Hilo, San Diego. It is supplemented by the container – Ro/Ro ship (Con/Ro) MAJORIE C (built 2015, 1,400 TEUs, 1,200 autos). 6/ RO/RO refers to Roll-off/Roll-on cargo handling accomplished by driving the vehicles on and off the ship fitted with external and internal ramps sometime referred to as a garage ship. 7/ Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha / NYK Lines operates its Asia Hawaii Express (AHX) with a string of five gearless containership on the port rotation Shanghai (China), Busan (S Korea), Yokohama (Japan) , Honolulu (Hawaii), Yokohama, Shanghai, Honolulu. 8/ Hapag-Lloyd leads a consortium of three carriers – Hapag Lloyd AG, U.S. Lines (CMA CGM) and Hamburg Sud Maersk -- operating an international service with a string of foreign flag containerships calling at Honolulu northbound from Australia, New Zealand and Fiji on an every six weekly frequency.
