Justin Maxwell Washington Nationals Steve Schmoll New York Mets 3 John McCurdy Oakland Athletics Truan Mehl Texas Rangers 2 Eric Milton Cincinnati Reds TEAM CONCEPT 1 :: The cornerstone of the Terrapin baseball program is a strong team concept. At Maryland, individual players come together as one solid group in order to achieve the same goal: success. COACH TERRY RUPP 2 :: Head Coach Terry Rupp has been at the helm of the Maryland baseball program for the past seven seasons. Each year, his teams have made positive strides due to the hard work and discipline which he instills in his players. RUPP WITH TEAM USA In the summer of 2002, Head Coach Terry Rupp served as an assistant coach Justin Maxwell with Team USA Baseball. Rupp toured with the squad on its summer Red, Washington Nationals White and Blue Tour, before helping the Stars & Stripes capture the Honkbal Classic Championship in The Netherlands and the silver medal at the FISU World University Baseball Championship. Steve Schmoll made his major league debut April 4, 2005 against the San Francisco Giants. He picked up his first career win April 8 at Arizona. Steve Schmoll ROAD TO THE PROS 3 :: Following the 2007 baseball season, Brett Cecil, Casey Baron and Ryan New York Mets Moorer joined the growing list of Terps who signed professional baseball contracts after playing under Terry Rupp. Over the past 11 amateur drafts, 25 of Rupp’s players have been selected by major league clubs. The trio joins freshly-minted pros like Justin Maxwell (Washington Nationals), Kevin Hart (Chicago Cubs), Eric Milton (Cincinnati Reds), John McCurdy, Steve Schmoll and Truan Mehl as Terps currently playing pro ball. Cecil, a powerful, left-handed closer was taken in the compensatory round of the draft with the 38th overall pick by the Toronto Blue Jays. Cecil shined in Truan Mehl his first minor-league stint with Toronto, starting 13 games for Auburn of the Texas Rangers New York-Penn League and posting a 1.28 ERA. Cecil struck out 56 batters and only walked 11. Moorer went in the 12th round to the Seattle Mariners and Baron went in the 34th round to the Milwaukee Brewers. September was an exciting time for Maryland baseball as Maxwell and Hart both received late-season call-ups from the Nationals and Cubs, respectively. Maxwell had a memorable moment that most players only dream of, belting a grand slam Sept. 11 for his first major-league hit. Maxwell hit .269 in 15 games for the Nationals and figures prominently in the franchise's future outfield rotation. Hart had the opportunity to be a part of a major-league pennant race for the Cubs, striking out 13 batters in 11 innings to the tune of a miniscule 0.82 ERA for the eventual National League Central champion Cubs. 4 2008 MARYLAND BASEBALL SEASON OUTLOOK VETERAN-DOMINATED TERPS LOOKING FOR BREAKOUT SEASON Entering his eighth season at the helm of Maryland baseball, After a record 18-5 start in 2007, including series wins at No. head coach Terry Rupp feels the 2008 Terrapin team is his most 27 NC State and at home against No. 6 Clemson, Maryland was talented yet. receiving votes in the national polls before a road trip to ACC With an upperclassmen-heavy roster already in place, Rupp heavyweight Georgia Tech. Wilson Spotlight Issue 224 July 28, 2009 www.wilson.pps.k12.or.us WILSON RISING JUNIOR TAKES HOME GOLD IN NATIONAL ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS Our very own Michael Evans (Class of '11), capped off a successful academic year with a stunning win at the Youth National Rowing Championships on June 14, 2009 in Cincinnati. He and his pairs partner Cameron McAlpine (Lincoln Graduate '09) row for Rose City Rowing Club, a private club in Portland that features athletes from all over the Portland metro area. They competed against 16 other crews from around the country over a 3 day period in the Men's Youth Pair category. They won their heat, semi- final, and final all with nice margins. Michael and Cameron took a boat-length lead in the first 500 meters and held on to win. "What is particularly impressive about this pair, is that they only started rowing this boat together in the past two months, after predominantly rowing larger boats with 8 rowers," adds Renee Pirkl Botero, Wilson parent. The transition to the smaller boat ended up to be very successful for Michael. Now, Michael along with Logan Pirkl, also a Wilson junior, are headed to Pittsburgh to spend four weeks, along with 35 other athletes from around the country, training at an invitational development camp for the Men's National Team with the hope of being selected to represent the U.S. as part of the 2010 National Team. Congratulations to Michael, son of Steve Evans and Sally Niles and Logan, son of Renee Pirkl Botero and Kirk Botero.
