NA 5068 SEU JORGE and ALMAZ Self Titled CD “This CD contains African and South American inspired music from around the world. It was construced for the first of Mochilla’s Timeless series on February 1st, 2009. I had the privilege of performing this set opening for Mulatu Astatke which was his very first Los Angeles appearance. I recorded the rehearsal using the best parts of multiple takes. This live mix was performed using one Technics turntable, one Rane mixer, and a Boss RC50 loop pedal. Only original 7 inch and LP pressings were used. Special thanks to everybody at Mochilla for having me part of this historic event. Shout outs to Egon and Quantic for the opening sets and ongoing inspiration.” — Cut Chemist Format: CD Format: LP Cat. No: ASS 004 Cat. • 3 Feet High and Rising”--De La Soul (1989) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Vikki Tobak (Guest Post)*
“3 Feet High and Rising”--De La Soul (1989) Added to the National Registry: 2010 Essay by Vikki Tobak (guest post)* De La Soul For hip-hop, the late 1980’s was a tinderbox of possibility. The music had already raised its voice over tensions stemming from the “crack epidemic,” from Reagan-era politics, and an inner city community hit hard by failing policies of policing and an underfunded education system--a general energy rife with tension and desperation. From coast to coast, groundbreaking albums from Public Enemy’s “It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back” to N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton” were expressing an unprecedented line of fire into American musical and political norms. The line was drawn and now the stage was set for an unparalleled time of creativity, righteousness and possibility in hip-hop. Enter De La Soul. De La Soul didn’t just open the door to the possibility of being different. They kicked it in. If the preceding generation took hip-hop from the park jams and revolutionary commentary to lay the foundation of a burgeoning hip-hop music industry, De La Soul was going to take that foundation and flip it. The kids on the outside who were a little different, dressed different and had a sense of humor and experimentation for days. In 1987, a trio from Long Island, NY--Kelvin “Posdnous” Mercer, Dave “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur, and Vincent “Maseo, P.A. Pasemaster Mase and Plug Three” Mason—were classmates at Amityville Memorial High in the “black belt” enclave of Long Island were dusting off their parents’ record collections and digging into the possibilities of rhyming over breaks like the Honey Drippers’ “Impeach the President” all the while immersing themselves in the imperfections and dust-laden loops and interludes of early funk and soul albums.

Rapper Travis Scott was on the lineup for the evening of August 3, 2018. His performance was scheduled from 9:45 p.m. to 10:55 p.m. on the River stage. NEW YORK | SEPTEMBER 1 2017 | BRAZILIAN MUSIC FOUNDATION | ASUOS | EDITION#3 SEU JORGE Sept 27 @ 7:30 PM The Beacon Theatre P. 7 A TRIBUTE TO DAVID BOWIE EDITOR’S NOTE Dear friends, On September 7th we will be celebrating 195 years of Brazilian freedom, Independence Day, with lots of fanfare and excitement. “Brazil’s Independence was officially announced on the 7th of September 1822 from the hands of the Portuguese. Since then it has been a country. For ages Brazil has represented the great escape to a prehistoric, tropical heaven, igniting the Western imagination like no other South American country. Brazil had its unique attributes including having had a reigning monarch and an empire that boasts of a relatively bloodless independence from Portugal. Brazilians did not have to fight tooth and nail nor did they create any type revolt. The King himself declared in the Grito do Ipiranga, "By my blood, by my honor, and by God: I will make Brazil free" with the motto "Independence or Death!" Every year, thousands get together in a mad passion to proudly celebrate Brazilian Independence Day. A country of mythic proportions, people gather in the streets celebrating with banners, balloons and streamers. For those that do not know anything about Brazilian culture, here is an opportunity to go to one of the events, get in the green and yellow mood, and see the richness of Brazilian art and hear the variety of sounds, rhythms and styles that exist in our repertoire. Furthermore, I hope you just enjoy the magazine in general and support Brazilian Music Foundation’s mission, which is to promote, educate and advance Brazilian Music in the Americas.

There are many numerous colleagues, family, friends, and mentors that have guided ths intellectual and personal process. I would first like to acknowledge my dissertation committee for their patience, enthusiasm, and encouragement while I was in Minneapolis, New York, São Paulo, and everywhere in between. I am thankful for the research and methodological expertise they contributed as I wrote on race, gender, sexuality, and popular culture through an interdisciplinary and hemispheric approach. Special gratitude is owed to my co-advisors, Dr. Bianet Castellanos and Dr. Erika Lee for their guidance, commitment, and willingness to read and provide feedback on multiple drafts of dissertation chapters and applications for various grants and fellowships to support this research. Their wisdom, encouragement, and advice for not only this dissertation, but also publications, job searches, and personal affairs were essential to my success. Bianet and Erika pushed me to rethink the concepts used within the dissertation, and make more persuasive and clearer arguments. I am also grateful to my other committee members, Dr. Fernando Arenas, Dr. Jigna Desai, and Dr. Roderick Ferguson, whose advice and intellectual challenges have been invaluable to me.
