FOR COMMUNITY 2011 ANNUAL REPORT MCGAW YMCA OUR CAUSE Here at the McGaw YMCA, we’re not just a gym or pool. Our YMCA makes accessible the support and opportunities that empower people and communities to learn, grow, and thrive. We are, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, and families. Every day the McGaw YMCA’s impact is felt when someone makes a healthy choice, when a mentor inspires a child, and when a community comes together for the common good.

OUR MISSION We are an open, charitable, membership association that promotes growth in spirit, mind, and body through programs and services for all in our diverse community.

OUR VISION We will welcome everyone; inspire, activate, and impact all in spirit, mind, and body: • Welcome All—We will reflect our community and its diversity through our staff, board, volunteers, and members, and improve our customer service. • Inspire Youth—We will instill a passion to learn and the skills to lead in the youth of the communities we serve. • Activate Families—We will promote healthy lifestyle decisions and support families in reaching their goals. • Impact the Community—We will be a catalyst and partner in serving the needs of the community in support of healthy living. • In Spirit, Mind, and Body—We will directly engage the over 20,000 children, families, and individuals we serve holistically, achieving the above goals, and always focusing on the individual’s spirit, mind, and body.

OUR VALUES McGaw YMCA’s core values—central to every policy, program, and relationship—are: • Caring—we demonstrate a sincere concern for others, their needs, and well-being. • Honesty—we tell the truth and demonstrate reliability and trustworthiness. • Respect—we treat others as we’d want to be treated and value the worth of every person. • Responsibility—we do what’s right and are accountable for our choices and actions. FOR COMMUNITY You’re not just a member—you’re part of a cause

Dear Friends,

In 2010-2011, at a time when so many aspects of our society and world are uncertain, the McGaw YMCA has continued to be a door that is open to all in the community. This past fiscal year was pivotal for our YMCA with exciting changes and renewed hope for our role in the community.

After two years of research, the YMCA national headquarters discovered most people identify with the YMCA nationally and feel good about the organization, but don’t identify its true impact. Nor do people know that the YMCA is a charitable, cause-driven nonprofit that is worthy of and requires public support.

In response, the YMCA of the USA embarked on the rollout of a new message that focuses on the three pillars of YMCA programming and community impact—Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility—with a new look and logo to highlight that message. On the heels of our 125th anniversary year the McGaw YMCA embraced this revitalized message with a renewed focus to communicate our cause and demonstrate the positive change we help bring about.

This annual report is a wonderful example of that new look and message. In it, we highlight the facts and figures from our past fiscal year, but more importantly, we share stories of impact from our YMCA community. These stories are what truly illustrate our cause, its impact in the community, and the values we espouse.

Strengthening community does not happen because of our physical buildings or real estate. It happens because of the people who interact within our walls and then throughout our community. It happens because of our staff— past, present, and future—who act as catalysts. It happens because of our generous volunteers and donors who help to provide opportunities for all.

It happens because of the many small, diverse communities that thrive, interact, and intersect within our greater McGaw YMCA community—and there are few places like the YMCA in Evanston. This is what we celebrated during our entire 125th anniversary year, this is what we celebrate now, and this is what we strive to strengthen in our future.

Thank you to all who strengthen our community every day.

Vickie Burke William F. Geiger Chair, Board of Directors President/CEO

P.S. To minimize our carbon footprint, we have limited the print edition of our Annual Report in favor of an online edition that celebrates our accomplishments in an interactive and socially responsible way.
