Cathedral Rector
Dear Parishioners,
Eucharistic Adoration refers to prayer before the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist—either in a tabernacle—as in the sanctuary of our church; or in a monstrance—as in our Adoration Chapel. A Holy Hour is a full one-hour period of Eucharistic Adoration.
One of the greatest challenges to praying a Holy Hour is determining how to spend that 60 minutes. There is a great temptation to fill every moment with activity (reading, reciting prayers, etc.) while leaving no time for silence with Jesus. This is because our culture encourages us to cultivate a constant state of distraction, mostly through internet addiction in general, and social media in particular. As a result, the prospect of a full hour of quiet is daunting to some, and downright terrifying to others. But keep this in mind: If Jesus could calm a raging storm on the sea, then calming our unruly mind is child’s play for him!
We certainly should incorporate some spiritual activities* into our prayer time, but always in moderation. After all, if you had a chance to converse with the human Jesus, wouldn’t it be strange or even rude to skip the personal conversation in order to read a book about him while he’s sitting right there?
So, our challenge is to strike an appropriate balance between doing things and just being in Jesus’ presence.
Here are some concrete suggestions to keep it simple:
Pray the Rosary – it takes about 15-20 minutes to pray five decades of the Rosary. Read the Bible – allot 15-20 minutes to read Scripture. If you’re not sure where to start, try the Gospels or the Psalms. Reserve at least 15-20 minutes for silent conversation with God (a.k.a. personal prayer).
The first two suggestions may sound easy enough, but the thought of so much silence might terrify you. So, let me share what I do when I enter the chapel with my mind overwhelmed by distractions. I pray what is known as the “Jesus Prayer”. Here are the words of that prayer:
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
The way to pray the Jesus Prayer is simply to repeat it, slowly and deliberately, over and over. Because the prayer is a paraphrase of several Gospel verses (e.g. Mk 10:47; Lk 18:38) which also invokes the Holy Name of Jesus—it packs amazing power to calm the soul and focus our prayer. Whenever thoughts, distractions and anxieties assault me as I begin a Holy Hour, I allow 30 minutes to praying nothing but the Jesus Prayer. I rarely end up needing to pray for a full 30 minutes because it can draw the soul into a state of contemplative quiet in a surprisingly short time. Once my mind is calm, I might then pray the Rosary, read Scripture or start a silent back-and-forth with the Lord.
So, these are just a few tips for making a Holy Hour—tips that you can share with the Catholic or non-Catholic friend or family member you invite to join you for some “heart to heart” time Jesus in the Most Holy Eucharist.
Now, it’s just a question of who you will invite!

La Adoración Eucarística se refiere a la oración ante la Presencia Real de Jesucristo en la Santa Eucaristía—ya sea en un tabernáculo—como en el santuario de nuestra iglesia; o en un monstrance, como en nuestra Capilla de Adoración. Una Hora Santa es un período completo de una hora de Adoración Eucarística.
Uno de los mayores desafíos para orar una Hora Santa es determinar cómo pasar esos 60 minutos. Hay una gran tentación de llenar cada momento de actividad (leer, recitar oraciones, etc.) sin dejar tiempo para el silencio con Jesús. Esto se debe a que nuestra cultura nos anima a cultivar un estado constante de distracción, sobre todo a través de la adicción a Internet en general, y las redes sociales en particular. Como resultado, la perspectiva de una hora completa de silencio es desalentadora para algunos, y francamente aterrador a otros. Pero ten esto en cuenta: Si Jesús pudiera calmar una tormenta furiosa en el mar, entonces calmar nuestra mente rebelde es un juego de niños para él!
