Quinn: Latter-day Saint Prayer Circles latter day saint prayer circles D michael quinn A central characteristic of religious devotion is the existence of ordinances rites and special observances that not only symbolize sa- cred relationships between deity and mankind but also bind togeth- er the religious participants as a group distinct from the unenlight- ened the unconverted and the uninitiated one immediately thinks of such examples as the ancient practice of ordination by the laying on of hands the sacrifice of animals the abrahamic circumcision the mosaic ceremonial cleansingsclean sings and dietary laws and the christian baptism and sacrament these ordinances have not only been clearly recorded in sacred history but have also been witnessed by non believers this binding process in religion has often been achieved through secret as well as public rites latter day saint scholar hugh nibley has devoted much research to ancient ordinances that were hidden from the world and were intended to be experienced in sacred seclu- sion 1 the importance of such study lies in the fact that within the church of jesus christ of latter day saints are certain nonpublic or- dinancesdinances that mormon leaders have repeatedly affirmed are divine restorations of ancient ordinances of god 2 LDS prophets have iden- tified these as temple ordinances known as washing anointing endowment sealing and second anointing 3 like other temple practices the existence of a special prayer circle ceremony has been referred to in official publications of the an earlier version of this article was nibleysNibleys research into a large number of greek syriac and coptic texts has produced a composite over- view indicating that certain elements of latter day saint prayer circle ceremonies are recognizable on many occasions in these ancient rites some ancient texts require prayer circle participants to wash their hands or to receive secret words and ordinances or to be dressed in special clothing other texts require them to harbor no ill feeling toward their neighbors to pray in the circle with uplifted hands or foot to foot or holding hands generally the participants in these ancient rites repeated the speakers words in antiphonal manner and copied his actions as he led the circle in prayer either at an altar or at a veil 10 closer to joseph smiths own time and place was the use of circle worship among nineteenth century participants in american protestant revivals at the most famous revival of that era in cane ridge kentucky one eyewitness wrote in 1801 that the revivalistsrevivalists collectedccollected in small circles of 10 or 12 11 moreover in the methodist episcopal revivals of the 1820s and 1830s when the invitation was given there was a general rush the large prayer ring was filled and for at least two hours prayer ardent went up to god 111212 As is well known joseph smith and most other leaders of the early LDS church had observed or participated in protestant revivals contemporary with the impact of religious revivalism in ameri- ca was the influence of freemasonry in masonic ritual of that era there was a prayer ceremony which     evolution and the origin of man This packet contains, as far as could be found, all statements issued by the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- day Saints on the subject of evolution and the origin of man, and a statement on the Church's attitude toward science. The earliest First Presidency statement, "The Origin of Man," was issued during the administration of President Joseph F. Smith in 1909. This was followed by a First Presidency Message in 1910 that included brief comments related to the study of these topics. The second statement, "Mormon View of Evolution," was issued during the administration of President Heber J. Grant in 1925. Although there has never been a formal declaration from the First Presidency addressing the general matter of organic evolution as a process for development of biological species, these documents make clear the official position of the Church regarding the origin of man. This packet also contains the article on evolution from the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, published in 1992. The current First Presidency authorized inclusion of the excerpt from the First Presidency minutes of 1931 in the 1992 Encyclopedia article. Various views have been expressed by other Church leaders on this subject over many decades; however, formal statements by the First Presidency are the definitive source of official Church positions. It is hoped that these materials will provide a firm foundation for individual study in a context of faith in the restored gospel. Approved by the Board of Trustees, June 1992. Roberts presented information to the leadership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January of 1922 that fundamentally challenged the entire premise of their religious beliefs. New research shows that in addition to church leadership, this information was also presented during the neXt few months to a select group of highly educated Mormon men and women outside of church hierarchy. This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

    A Few More Bullseyes for Joseph Smith from Ancient Christian Writings A summary of a few incredible Temple related “coincidences” Excerpts compiled by Cameron Ford This document contains quotes from a book called “The Temple in Time and Eternity” edited by Donald W. Parry and Stephen D. Ricks. The book is a compilation of different chapters written by various authors. To fully understand what is presented, a few definitions are helpful, as given below: Gnosticism: A movement among some 2nd century Christians that took elements of the original Christian church and created some doctrinal innovations. This movement was suppressed by the main Christian churches of the day and many of the gnostic documents were destroyed. Because of the loss of many genuine Christian doctrines and teachings in the first centuries, it is often hard for biblical scholars to determine what doctrines the Gnostics inherited from the earliest Christians and what doctrines they added. “Gnosis” means knowledge of spiritual mysteries. Some of the core teachings [doctrinal innovations of the Gnostics] include the following: 1. All matter is evil, and the non-material, spirit-realm is good. 2. There is an unknowable God, who gave rise to many lesser spirit beings called Aeons. 3. The creator of the (material) universe is not the supreme god, but an inferior spirit (the Demiurge). 4. Gnosticism does not deal with "sin," only ignorance. 5. Faulring On Sunday, 12 November 1848, apostle Orson Hyde, president of the Quorum of the Twelve and the church’s presiding ofcial at Kanesville-Council Bluffs, stepped into the cool waters of Mosquito Creek1 near Council Bluffs, Iowa, and took Mormonism’s estranged Second Elder by the hand to rebaptize him. Sometime shortly after that, Elder Hyde laid hands on Oliver’s head, conrming him back into church membership and reordaining him an elder in the Melchizedek Priesthood.2 Cowdery’s rebaptism culminated six years of desire on his part and protracted efforts encouraged by the Mormon leadership to bring about his sought-after, eagerly anticipated reconciliation. Cowdery, renowned as one of the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon, corecipient of restored priesthood power, and a founding member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had spent ten and a half years outside the church after his April 1838 excommunication.     St. Louis Luminary: The Latter-day Saint Experience at the Mississippi River, 1854–1855 Susan Easton Black he St. Louis Luminary, an LDS newspaper printed in St. Louis, was Tshort lived but is a key to chronicling the status of the Church on the American frontier in 1854 and 1855. Although it was only one volume, the newspaper contained fifty-two issues, each spanning four pages in length with each page divided into five columns. This translates into approximately twenty-six hundred single-spaced pages on 8½" x 11" paper. From the first issue on Wednesday, November 22, 1854, to the last issue on Saturday, December 15, 1855, its masthead proclaimed the paper a “light [shining] in darkness and the darkness comprehendeth it not,” a refer- ence to the gospel being published in the Luminary in the “gentile” city of St. Louis. A new book, The Best of the St. Louis Luminary, gives an in-depth history of the newspaper and its contents, and includes a DVD of scans of the entire volume of the newspaper in a searchable format. This article is excerpted from that book. Because of the years in which this newspaper was printed, it played a significant role in the national discussion of polygamy, which had not been publicly announced until 1852.1 The paper printed an unrelenting defense of polygamy against a backdrop of exaggerated reports and sensational claims that stemmed from the halls of Congress and from eastern newspapers. Editor Erastus Snow did not hesitate to confront politicians, newspaper col- umnists, or even the president of the United States on the issue.

    NAUVOO’S TEMPLE Dean E. Garner—Institute Director, Denton, Texas t was announced August 31, 1840, that a temple would be built, and Iarchitectural plans began to come in. Joseph Smith “advertised for plans for the temple,” William Weeks said, “and several architects presented their plans. But none seemed to suit Smith. When [William] presented his plans, Joseph Smith grabbed him, hugged him and said, ‘You are the man I want.’”1 Thus William was made superintendent of temple construction. All his work was cleared by the temple building committee. Those on the committee were Reynolds Cahoon, Elias Higbee, and Alpheus Cutler.2 Joseph Smith had the final say pertaining to the details of the temple, for he had seen the temple in vision, which enabled him to make decisions on the temple’s appearance.3 During the October Conference of 1840, the building of the Nauvoo During the temple was voted on and accepted by the saints. The temple was to be October Conference constructed of stone. Many weeks preceding the conference, a survey of Nauvoo’s main street verified that the entire route was underlain with a of 1840, the building massive layer of limestone many feet thick, particularly so in the northern of the Nauvoo part of the community.
