2008 Second Quarter Report and Community Issues

The following issues were identified in the Summit County Quality of Life Project conducted by the United Way of Summit County, the Akron Community Foundation and The University of Akron as part of the Thriving Community Needs and Assessment Study requested by Summit County Executive James B. McCarthy. Interviews of 183 individual “key informants” as well as 40 in- person interviews of county residents were conducted by the Federation for Community Planning. A copy of this report is attached to the appendix of this file.

Among some of the major findings were:

WAKR & www.AkronNewsNow.com, were part of the Greater Akron Chamber of Commerce recognition of local small business excellence. The luncheon was held June 6, 2008 at the Sheraton Suites in Cuyahoga Falls. RCRG Vice President Ed Esposito served as the emcee of the event.

WAKR began airing a special series of “Tax Tips” beginning March 14, 2008 with placement 3 times daily. This flight of consumer economic information vignettes produced by ABC News aired through April 15, 2008..

April 19 Summit County Red Cross Blood Drive: WAKR’s Ray Horner broadcast live, 9am-11am from the annual Red Cross Blood Drive at Green High School.

April 29 WAKR Senior Luncheon: 250 seniors attended a special luncheon held at the Cuyahoga Falls Natatorium. The day included lunch, prizes, entertainment and informational booths.

May 8 WAKR’s Student Athlete Program: 36 student athletes and their families joined with coaches, athletic directors and sponsors to recognize the area’s best student-athletes. The included the award of two-$1,000 scholarships and four-$500 scholarships

June 7 WAKR/WONE/WQMX’s Pet Expo: This annual free event is held at a local city park where over 30 animal shelters and 28 vendors promoted their operations and had animals for adoption. 71 animals were adopted. Close to 3,000 people attended.

June 20 The United Way of Summit County’s Day of Action: This day, sponsored by the United Way of Greater Akron, teams area companies with local agencies for the day performing

23 cleaning, yard work, filing, and other services. Ten WAKR/WONE/WQMX employees volunteered their time to clean vans for the Hattie Larlham group home.
