SAFETY & SECURITY PATROL ~ 604-968-8058 Notice of Work MIB Public Works & Housing

April 5, 2019

As you may be aware, we are considering future options for multi-family housing in our community. Planning is in its earliest stages.

To help inform these plans, the Housing Department, on behalf of the Band, will be undertaking technical work and studies on various sites and areas, including Crown Place and the foreshore lands. This work will include surveying, archaeological work, geotechnical and environmental soils testing, traffic pattern studies and civil engineering.

This work is needed to investigate the suitability of various areas for possible future development of community facilities and multi-family development. It will also inform our assessment of potential approaches for creek and waterways protection and future flood mitigation measures.

The first work scheduled will be soils testing on the south side of Musqueam Avenue, west of the Longhouse, starting on April 11, 2019 at 8:00am. You may notice workers on site and in the community over the coming weeks.

We'll be sharing more details on potential plans for housing, and next steps in the planning process, later this month.

The proposed date for a community info session is currently April 24th at 5:30pm. Please save the date! We will finalize and send out an invitation to community members as soon as possible.

The Musqueam people have lived in our present location for thousands of years. Our traditional territory once occupied much of what is now and surrounding areas. The name Musqueam relates back to the flowering plant, ma9kway, which grows in the estuary. There is a story that has been passed on from generation to generation that explains how we became known as the xwma9kwayam (Musqueam) - People of the ma9kway plant. Although a metropolitan city has developed in the heart of Musqueam territory, our community maintains strong cultural and traditional beliefs. Today our population flourishes and we are a strong community of over 1,300 members. To learn more about Musqueam, please visit www.musqueam.bc.ca.

At Musqueam we strive to create a progressive workplace.

Graphic depicts total precipitation forecast over the 3.5-day period from Thursday PM to Monday AM Issued Tuesday April 2nd 2019 at 3:55PM PDT

Weather Event Impacts: Weather Notification for Emergency Management • Areas prone to flash flooding could see elevated runoff. • Much needed rain will temporarily alleviate drought & wildfire Big Change in the Weather Pattern concerns. Moderate rain for the Coast

Weather Event Estimated Start Time and Duration: Forecast Weather Event Timing: Beginning late Thurs. April 4th and lasting until Monday April 8, 2019 April 4-8, 2019

Key Points: ALERT LEVEL • After a prolonged dry spell, the first significant rainfall in over two FYI months will reach the Coast beginning late Thursday. • A series of systems will deliver 50-120mm of precipitation to coastal Significant watersheds between Thursday night and Monday morning. • The heaviest precipitation is expected over the South Coast including western , the North Shore Mountains, Howe Sound and southern sections of the Sunshine Coast. Local rainfall rates could reach 10+ mm/hour in these areas. • Over the BC Interior, amounts will be more modest in the 20-40mm range over the 4-day period. • Freezing levels will be in the 1400 to 1800 metre range along the Coast and 1800 to 2300 metres over the Southern Interior. • There is a potential for strong coastal winds to accompany the systems late Friday and again on Sunday. Canad'a'' • Rains will actually begin tonight but the big totals will start late Thursday. • Road surfaces are typically slippery in the first rain following a dry spell. The River Forecast Centre is not concerned with this rain event as it pertains to major rivers overflowing their banks. They note this will probably lead to an end-of-season snow accumulation at higher elevations, and will see a modest upswing on snow pack. They have noted some low elevation melt and start of freshet in the lower elevation watersheds. Flows may start to get a bit higher though this week and will be a monitored (eg: Nazko, Cache Creek)

Forecast certainty: MODERATE - There is good consensus amongst forecast models in the major change to an active and wet period. As always, the timing, precipitation amounts and the strength of the winds will become more certain with time. You are encouraged to monitor the below resources.

Junior Achievement of British Columbia (JABC) is part of an international organization that delivers education based programs to students in elementary through high school, with a focus on financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. Our purpose is to inspire, prepare and empower BC youth for life-long success, with a long term objective that all youth have access to a JABC program. In operation since 1955, JABC partners with educators, donors and volunteers to bring real world experiences into the classroom.

JABC is hiring a Manager, Indigenous Programs, to increase the delivery of programs in Indigenous communities. This is a key leadership position, critical to the successful implementation of JABC's new strategic plan Bright Futures for all BC's Youth. Over the next five years, JABC plans to expand service to Indigenous youth across BC by delivering more JA programs into their communities.

This is an exciting opportunity for JABC to build on a 2017 pilot program that resulted in the delivery of 13 Be Entrepreneurial programs in 8 First Nations communities, as well as other program deliveries to Indigenous students in BC public schools.
