Welcome to the 2012 Missouri Recycling Association Conference!

The chasing arrows we all recognize as the recycling symbol are a great reminder that for recycling to be recycling, it really does have to come full circle. It isn’t until materials that are collected are processed, used in manufacturing a new product, and returned to the economic mainstream that we can say the job is done. And even then, the process just starts all over again. With so much activity, it is easy to see that it does take all of us to make a difference. Recycling in Missouri is a fabulous partnership of citizens, businesses, not-for-profits and governments – all working together.

This year’s conference planning team enjoyed one of those “working together” processes as we joined up with COAM to organize the event. While we have retained many of the characteristics of our usual conference experience, this collaboration means that there are a lot of new things to choose from as well.

I want to personally thank each of you for attending this year’s conference, and for bringing your own expertise and perspective to each of our sessions. Our conference activities are fabulous as designed, but they are at their best when our membership is fully engaged – just another example of how together, we make a difference!

General Sessions ~ Featured & Guest Speakers

The Campus as a City: Waste Diversion at Washington University Tuesday, Sept. 11, 12:00 – 1:30 Ambassadeur Ballroom

Washington University’s campuses span over 400 acres and include the traditional Danforth campus, the high-rise Medical School complex, dense student housing districts, and satellite campuses. This landscape includes large dining facilities, thousands of offices, thousands of residential units, hundreds of laboratories, and many large university facilities. The university community consists of nearly 12,000 staff members and over 13,000 students all of whom are consumers of goods and producers of waste. As part of Washington University’s commitment to sustainability, campus leadership has embarked on a multi-year effort to significantly reduce the University’s landfill waste.

Phil Valko and Jill Duncan will present on these efforts which include a recent switch to single stream recycling, a bottle water ban, pre- consumer and post-consumer composting, converting spent fryer oil to biodiesel, construction waste diversion, near zero waste large events, and a myriad of special programs. Recent successes include diverting over 1 million pounds of artificial turf from the landfill and composting over 100,000 pounds of food waste. Phil and Jill will discuss the strides that Washington University is making, the obstacles the University has encountered in its effort to divert materials, as well as some exciting new programs that are being developed. 1.5 CEU hrs

Dear Conference Attendee,

On behalf of the Composting and Organics Association of Missouri (COAM), I want to thank you for attending the first ever Missouri Recycling Association (MORA) Conference in Partnership with COAM.

This year’s theme, “Together We Can Make A Difference” could not express more how COAM and its members feel about working with MORA. We know that by coming together during this conference, we have strengthened relationships that will benefit both organizations and their members today, tomorrow and far into the future.

As you know, COAM is an emerging organization in the composting and organics industry in Missouri. We hope that by visiting with our members, attending our sessions and workshops and meeting our engaging exhibitors, you were able to learn more about our organization and what we are doing for the industry in Missouri. Please visit our website to learn more about us (www.coam-mo.com) or call a member and find out from him or her firsthand. We want to continue to grow our membership with many new and engaged people like you, committed to the success of the composting and organics industry in Missouri.

We packed a lot into three days. We hope you leave with useful information, great resources, new business connections and a desire to attend next year’s event.

See you soon.

Sincerely,
