Iona College Athletics 2011-12 Annual Report Dear Friends of Iona Athletics,

On behalf of the Athletics Department, I want to thank you for your continued support of the Gaels. Our school motto, “Certa Bonum Certamen” (fight the good fight), guides our student-athletes to give it their best on the fields of competition and in the classroom. We are proud to have our student-athletes represent the mission, tradition, and goals of excellence that Iona is built upon. With the continued philanthropy of many, the Iona Athletics Department is able to give these student-athletes the means to fight and achieve excellence. While we are constantly working to keep moving forward, I would like to take this opportunity to look back at the past year.

The following Annual Report serves to review the many successes achieved during the 2011-12 athletic season here at Iona College. Below I’ve recapped a few of our many remarkable achievements.

• On the court, our men’s basketball program secured an at-large bid in the NCAA Championship after posting a 25-8 record, the 16th 20+ win season and the ninth NCAA Championship berth in school history. It also marked just the second time a MAAC school was selected as an at-large.

• The 2011-12 men’s cross country team captured its 21st consecutive MAAC Championship, the longest streak in the nation, and an outstanding second place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional. The Gaels then raced to a ninth place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championship at the LaVern Gibson Championship XC Course, the program’s tenth straight Top 10 finish at the national championship as the program remains one of two in NCAA Div. I to accomplish the feat.

• The women’s cross country team continued building a tradition of excellence, winning its seventh consecutive MAAC Championship.

• Last year’s softball team earned its third consecutive MAAC Championship after defeating Fairfield in the deciding game of the MAAC Championship, earning the program’s third straight bid to the NCAA Regionals. The squad traveled this season to Berkeley, CA.

• Our women’s water polo team clinched its second consecutive MAAC Championship, with a thrilling one goal win in the title game. The team moved on to San Diego State and the NCAA Championship, where the Gaels earned seventh place, winning its first ever game at the tournament.

• Academic honors were also numerous this past year, as 171 student-athletes were named to the MAAC Academic Honor Roll.

Please join me as we look back at the accomplishments of the 2011-12 year, made possible by your support. Thank you once again for helping our student-athletes and all those involved in Iona College Athletics fight the good fight and write new chapters in the history of Iona College!

Go Gaels!

The annual event is an exclusive cocktail reception to thank the members of the Goal Club for all their generous support of Iona Athletics and an opportunity to meet the Iona coaching staff. The event also serves as an opportunity for Iona College Athletics to invite back our younger alumni and introduce them to the Goal Club. Representatives from multiple teams were on hand to meet and greet the attendees. Once again, the event was held at the Mutual of America Building in New York City.

The dynamic evening brought together representatives and supporters of Iona College’s past and present. Alumni ranged from the graduating classes of the early 1950’s to the class of 2011. The Goal Club and its members’ dedication and commitment has been instrumental in the success of Iona’s 21 sport Division I programs. Again, we thank the Goal Club members who were able to attend this event and we truly appreciated your continued support. TENTH ANNUAL HOMECOMING ATHLETICS FUNDRAISER On Oct. 22, the Goal Club hosted its annual Homecoming & Family Weekend Fundraiser. The event took place in the ’s John A. Mulcahy Gymnasium and welcomed all Gael fans for an evening of food, music, and fun to support and celebrate Iona College Athletics. This year’s event theme was “A Taste of Italy” and highlighted the 2011 Homecoming & Family Weekend’s Saturday night.

The event featured a variety of great food, music, door prizes and a silent auction. A large amount of alumni, family and friends of Iona Athletics attended the event and helped to celebrate and support Iona’s 21 sport Division I athletic program. BASKETBALL RECEPTION The Goal Club hosted a men’s and women’s basketball reception at Wykagyl Country Club in New Rochelle on May 22. Tenth-year women’s head coach Anthony Bozzella and second-year men’s head coach Tim Cluess spoke to a roomful of supporters on the state of their respective teams and their outlook on the upcoming 2012-13 season.

The coaches gave a sneak peak on their upcoming schedules, progress of the returning players and the incoming recruiting classes. EIGHTH ANNUAL THANK-A-THON Iona College student-athletes personally called Goal Club members during the Eighth Annual Goal Club Thank-a-thon. It is an opportunity to educate student-athletes on the importance of donor support and the positive impact it has on their experience. Included in the Thank-a-Thon was an opportunity for all of our athletes to personally sign thank you letters for several of our Goal Club members. The student-athletes had the unique opportunity to personally thank our Goal Club donors for their generous support of Iona College Athletics. Every call that was made had a simple but sincere message: Thank you!
