In an anecdote he mentioned an instance when, during a journey across the Great Australian Desert, the camels were stopped in the heat of the day, and one officer decided to sit under the camel in the shade its body provided. Not surprisingly, the camel bit him! I have to admit that I would prob- ably have bitten him too, in the circumstances! Because of this bad-tempered nature, the camel was also deemed unclean. The camel may be bad-tempered, but a bull beats it out of sight when it comes to bad temper. They have to put a brass ring in the bull’s nose and attach it to a large wooden bar in order to lead it from place to place, so dangerous is it to handle. Yet the Law demanded the sacrifice of bulls—so bad temper can’t be the reason for the camel’s rejection.

Jesus authenticates the letter from Jerusalem When Jesus instructs John to write to ecclesias in Asia (Revelation 2 and 3), there are clear al- lusions to, and quotations from, the Old Testament. By the time the letters given to John were to be circulated through Asia, however, the Jerusalem council had adjudicated on the lifestyle issues relating to harmony in matters between Jew and Gentile. The content of the council’s letter can be read in Acts 15:23-29. That letter was relevant to the ecclesias to which Jesus wrote, as recorded in Revelation. So it is not surprising that, when Jesus speaks of unacceptable behaviour in those ecclesias, he quotes parts of the letter that they had received from the apostles in Jerusalem. Thus Jesus reminds the ecclesias in question (Pergamos and Thyatira) of the communication that they had received at the hand of “Barnabas Acts Wording Revelation and Paul” (Acts 15:25), which was confirmed 15:28 “no greater burden” 2:24 by “Judas and Silas” (v. 27) by word of mouth. A plaque on the wall describes the work of Miles Coverdale, the Bible translator who produced the first complete printed Bible in English. Little is known of Coverdale’s early life, so there is some conjecture about his association with York, but it seems probable that he was a Yorkshireman.

As an account of God’s revelation of Himself in human history, they present a record of one of the most miraculous acts of deliverance there has ever been. They form the basis of a parable of the epic work of salvation that God has achieved in saving from the power of sin and death. This 238-page book deals with key themes and lessons of the Exodus narrative, as well as its more difficult and puzzling features. £1.00.
