GAME NOTES LOUISIANA TECH MARSHALL ECU (9-21) (13-18) HEAD COACH CHRIS FINWOOD Chris Finwood is in his third seson at the helm of the Monarch program. The 2013 Monarchs won 30 MIDDLE TENN. OLD DOMINION games and placed third in the school’s final season in the Colonial Athletic Association. Looking towards (15-18) (20-14) an even brighter future as ODU joins Conference USA, three of the Monarch freshmen in 2013 were selected to the All-Rookie team.

The Monarchs finished the season strong, winning seven of its last 10 games. ODU swept three-game RICE SOUTHERN MISS. series from NCAA tournament participant William & Mary and the road series at James Madison. Team (23-12) (19-15) MVP Ben Verlander was a semifinalist for the Gregg Olson award and two Monarchs were selected in the 2013 MLB draft.

Prior to coming to ODU, Finwood guided Western Kentucky for six years as head coach and was named UAB UTSA the 2009 Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year, begins his second season at the helm of the Monarch (23-10) (22-11) program.

In six seasons, the Hilltoppers witnessed unprecedented success under Finwood, a Hampton, Va. (Hampton High) native. Magical postseason runs in 2008 and 2009, both in the Sun Belt and NCAA TULANE Tournaments, highlighted the Finwood era, as he compiled a 190-154 record at the Bowling Green, KY. (14-17) school. His 2009 squad reached the Regional final in Oxford, MS.

Finwood-coached squads pride themselves on defense and his 2009 team was no exception, finishing third in the nation in fielding percentage (.979). WKU’s fielding percentage was nine percentage-points C-USA PRE-SEASON ALL CONFERENCE higher than the next-closest conference foe and the Hilltoppers made 17 fewer errors than second-place Troy. The 2011 squad had a .976 fielding percentage which tied them for first in the Sun Belt and 15th ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM CO-PLAYERS OF THE YEAR nationally. The 2008 squad also had a .976 fielding percentage which tied them for first in the Sun Belt.
